The Maslowski family, of Haddonfield, donated money to the borough for the planting of a new hol-
iday tree at Library Point this holiday season. A plaque in front of the tree honored the life of
Diane Maslowski, who perished in an act of terrorism on Pan Am flight 103, over Lockerbie, Scot-
land, on Dec. 21, 1988. See the story on page 12.

There are no plans to look at
building a new library at another
location or at the present library
location in the near future, Com-
missioner Ed Borden said last
week.
At a recent workshop meeting,
the Haddonfield commissioners
supported an ADA Plus plan
that would make several im-
provements to the library to
bring it up to ADA code. Namely,
the library would have a new ele-
vator, handicap-accessible bath-
rooms and several minor renova-
tions within the structure to
bring it to ADA compliance.
The plan would cost about $1.8
million, according to Library Di-
rector Susan Briant.
Everyone is back to square
one in my opinion. I expressed
my thoughts at the commission-
ers work session meeting. If we
are getting an ADA-accessible ad-
dition, I hope they (the commis-
sioners) will consider looking at
the property line behind us to ex-
pand the addition, Briant said.
I hope they make a larger addi-
tion. I did not discourage that
idea at the meeting.
The commissioners, library
representatives and Haddonfield
citizens have talked about a new
library or the refurbishment of
the library for a long time, Bor-
den said.
However, Borden said the com-
missioners, library board and the
committee appointed by the com-
missioners has come to a consen-
sus that the work should be done
within the existing building
We will adhere to obligations
under the ADA in terms of what
has to be done in the building,

In a short borough meeting, the
Haddonfield commissioners in-
troduced the open space trust
fund for another five years after
borough voters approved the ref-
erendum earlier this month.
Mayor Tish Colombi and Com-
missioner Jeff Kasko approved
the trust fund, which will set the
maximum amount of open space
tax at a one-cent per every $100 of
assessed property value. Commis-
sioner Ed Borden was not present
for the vote.
Voters approved the open space
tax by a vote of 1,744 to 669, a 70 to
30 percent split. Haddonfield vot-
ers re-upped the boroughs open-
space tax, which currently sees a
half-cent per $100 of assessed
property value placed into a spe-
cial open-space trust fund, which
can be used for the purchase and
maintenance of open space in the
borough.
The question capped the maxi-
mum allowable open-space tax at
one cent, which will raise about
$226,936 a year. Colombi said the
average assessed home is respon-
sible for about $28 a year for the
open space tax.
The original open-space tax
question, passed five years ago by
borough voters, had a special
clause that would cancel the tax
after five years. Commissioners
published a statement prior to the
November general election and
said the open space trust fund
could possibly be used for the pur-
chase of the Bancroft property
for open space purposes.

and also to make some limited
renovations to the building to
make it more functional and to
make it more able to provide
services that a modern library
can provide, he said. We have
to get into the details for this at a
later date. For instance, one of
the likely things to do is to recon-
figure some of the interior space
to make the library more func-
tional.
Simply bringing the site up
to ADA compliance would like-
ly cost about $1.1 million for
construction and material
costs. ADA compliance with
some added site improvements
would cost more than $1.8 mil-
lion.
In the past several years the
commissioners have discussed
several options for a refur-
bished library and new library
at another site in the borough.
In June of 2010, an engineering
firm hired by the borough ex-
plored the cost of making the
current library ADA compliant,
ADA compliant with several ad-
ditional improvements, a 7,500
and 15,000 square-foot expan-
sion, and finally a new library
at another site in the borough.
Several different site plans
were explored to build a new li-
brary as well, including a re-
cent plan by the Haddonfield
Board of Education, to con-
struct an $8 million library at
the Bancroft property.
A group in town also ex-
plored the possibility of a new
library being built at the Allen
parking lot.
The Allen parking lot sits be-
hind Lantern Lane and adja-
cent to the PATCO parking lot.
A brand new, two-story library
would cost the borough about
$6.9 million.
The structure would have been
placed on stilts so no parking
spots would be sacrificed at the
lot. A three-story structure would
have cost about $6.5 million.

O
dds are that at some point in
your life you placed a bet on a
sporting event. It might have
been a big-time wager while visiting
Vegas. It might have been an office
March Madness entry.
The point is, betting on sporting
events is a part of our culture, and try-
ing to prohibit it brings back memo-
ries of Prohibition.
New Jersey residents want the op-
portunity to bet on sports. Or at least
the opportunity to bet on them legally,
as they already are betting on sports.
They said so in this months general
election.
Problem is, New Jersey missed the
boat years ago when the door closed
on legalized sports betting. Now the
state faces a myriad of hoops to jump
through before residents can legally
bet on hoops action.
Or so thats what a lot of people
think. We think differently. We think
the Garden State will get sports bet-
ting sooner rather than later, and
heres why:
First, millions of dollars are on the
table. Dollars that are not being taxed
because the wagering is taking place
out of the U.S. or illegally.
Second, government needs money.
All governments need money.
Third, eventually the politicians are
going to put these two things together
and realize that legalized sports bet-
ting simply makes sense. And when
that finally happens things will move
quickly. A simple decision that the
1991 law banning sports betting in
most states is unconstitutional clears
the way.
Sports betting wont solve all of the
states woes. But it will generate addi-
tional revenue and give Atlantic City
casinos a shot in the arm. Lets flex
some political muscle and get this
done.
Sports wagering a good bet
Hurdles will be overcome in due time
Bet on it
Government needs money. Sports
betting generates money. Need we
say more?

Conference reflects on beauty
of African-American women
On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Southern
Burlington County NAACP Women in the
NAACP Committee Presented: ENOUGH!
A Reflection on the Concept of Beauty
Among African-American Women.
Ken Gordon, president of the Southern
Burlington County NAACP, was driving in
his car one day when he heard an article
being discussed on the radio. Satoshi
Kanazawa wrote an article entitled, Why
Are Black Women Rated Less Physically
Attractive Than Other Women, But Black
Men Are Rated Better Looking Than Other
Men? which was published in Psychology
Today.
Ken was offended by this idea and even
more upset that the usual black repre-
sentatives did not speak out on this issue
and defend black women.

The invisible work of a teacher
No one believes all the extra work teach-
ers have to do after school. So dozens of in-
structors from Gloucester and Salem coun-
ties did their homework in public Thurs-
day, according to the Gloucester County
Times.
Teachers took all the student essays,
projects and homework they normally had
to grade at home and worked on them in-

The Internet is a magnificent place

My loyalty to this free enterprise

There are 600 million reasons to send
former Gov. Jon S. Corzine to prison.
Haddon firefighters Brian Poli-
afico and Brian Plodizyn both
completed their first full
marathon in Philadelphia last re-
cently.
We are very proud of both of
them for this great accomplish-
ment, said Haddon Fire Co. No. 1
Chief Joe Riggs.
A little over a year ago, these
same two Haddon Fire Company
volunteer firefighters set out on a
health and fitness journey, and es-
tablished several personal goals
for upcoming competitions. It
started with completion of the
Rothman 8K run in 2010, the
longest distance they had both
ever run. They then participated
in March 2011 with the Haddon
Fire Company running team in
the Fight for Air stairclimb
competition, in which they both
climbed the Bell Atlantic Tower
building in Philadelphia, -50 sto-
ries tall. Not only did they both
complete the climb, they did it
twice once in regular street
clothes and once in full turnout
gear (wearing an additional 50
pounds of weight).
Then it was on to the Tough
Mudder in April 2011 a 12-mile
run with 19 rigorous military
style obstacles at the Bear Creek
Resort in Macungie, Pa. In addi-
tion to the 19 very challenging ob-
stacles, both of them had to
plunge 15 feet into 39 degree
water and battle hypothermic
conditions as an additional chal-
lenge. Participating in this event,
they raised money for The
Wounded Warrior Project. In
May, they both completed the
Broad Street 10-mile run and a
half-marathon. Over the summer,
several different 5K races were
accomplished as they began their
training for the Philadelphia
Marathon, including the Heroes
to Hero 5K, in which Haddon Fire
Company placed second among
the firefighter division.
Since making their commit-
ment a year ago, they have accom-
plished what less than 1 percent
of the population can comple-
tion of a marathon.
They have sacrificed a signifi-
cant amount of personal time and
energy to achieve this goal and
still managed to maintain their
family, work and firefighter train-
ing commitments during this en-
tire year.
They are the epitome of a new
culture within Haddon Fire Com-
pany, expanding its continued
commitment to physical fitness
and continuous training.
Our firefighters are ready at a
moments notice to assist the
members of our community and
those communities around us.
If our firefighters are not "run-
ning" to a call, they are probably
running to prepare for the next
competition.

Realtors help build Jakes Place
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
One family whose roots trace
back in Haddonfields history
has donated a symbol that will
live on in the borough for
decades, as well as honoring the
memory of a sister who perished
in a terroristic attack during the
holiday season.
The Maslowski family of Had-
donfield donated funds to the
borough this year for the plant-
ing of a new holiday tree at li-
brary point during the holiday
season.
Sue Maslowski, owner of Jay
West Bridal, on Kings Highway,
said the family donated money to
the borough to honor her sister
who died on Dec. 21, 1988, when
Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed
by a terrorist bombing over
Lockerbie, Scotland, as it flew
from London to New York City.
All 243 passengers and 16
crewmembers aboard the flight
were killed.
Diane Maslowski was return-
ing to Haddonfield for the Christ-
mas holiday from her home in
London, Sue said. Diane was a
longtime resident of Haddon-
field and a member of the class
of 1976 at Haddonfield Memorial
High School.
The Maslowski family was on
hand for the boroughs tree light-
ing ceremony on Friday, Nov. 25.
Sues nephew, who is 5, had the
honor of turning the holiday
lights on for the tree.
The tree lighting ceremony of-
ficially opens the holiday season
for Haddonfield each year.
A plaque in memory of Diane
will be affixed in front of the tree
in her honor, Sue said.
It reads, In loving memory of
Diane Maslowski, HMHS class of
1976, perished in an act of terror-
ism Pan Am flight 103, Dec. 21,
1988.
Sue said the family contacted
the borough last year to ask if
they could donate money for a
new holiday tree at library point.
The old tree had to be removed
because of construction along
the two streets and the damage it
had sustained to its root system
from the pipes underneath the
tree.
This year, Sue said Mayor Tish
Colombi contacted her and asked
if the offer was still on the table.
Of course, the family jumped at
the opportunity to remember the
deceased member of their family.
Its in such a nice, prominent
part of town. When I saw what
was planned I got a tear in my
eye, she said.
I said to myself, Dianne you
really would have loved this
tree. She always came home to
Haddonfield for Christmas, this
was her home. Its nice to have
this sense of community here.
Its nice to have something this
wonderful come out of some-
thing that was so horrible.

Santa Claus was James Bond
before James Bond was James
Bond. The guy has all sorts of
magical inventions to fly around
the world and deliver presents to
children in every nation. Hes a
master of all languages and cul-
tures, and he can do it all while
wearing a fashionable red jump-
suit with a pretty rocking beard
on top of it all.
Now the guy can even sign
with children who are deaf. Who
knew?
Santa Claus was a special
guest at the Moorestown Mall re-
cently, hosted by 360 Transla-
tions, owned by Dan Swartz.
Swartz specially called Santa
Claus for this event because he
noticed that deaf children in the
area werent able to speak with
the normal helpers of Santa
Claus because they couldnt
sign.
Swartz contacted Santa up at
the North Pole, and the big guy
sent a specially trained helper to
the mall to speak with about 30
families who had children with
hearing disabilities. For many of
these young children, it was the
first time they were ever able to
communicate with a Santa
Claus, he said.
Basically, any kid who goes
to see any Santa Claus expects
Santa to be able to understand

them a list of their toys and to
have a short conversation with
him. With deaf kids, it just was-
nt happening. I thought it would
be a great idea to have a Santa
speak the same language with
these kids and their parents,
many of whom are deaf as well,
Swartz said. Its awesome. The
look on their faces when they re-
alize they can speak with Santa
Claus is so great.
Swartz is the president of 360
Translations, a Cherry Hill
based company that offers pro-
fessional interpreting referral
services. For the deaf client, 360
Translations offers professional,
ethically minded interpreters
who act as a voice for the deaf as
well as for the hearing.
Originally based in Baltimore,
Swartz said that several schools
for the deaf in Maryland asked
his company if he knew of any
Santas in the area who were able
to communicate using sign lan-
guage. He had never heard of
such a request, but thought it
would be a great idea for the stu-
dents to get to experience a visit
with Santa Claus.
We had no idea of anything
like this. We thought, You know,
maybe there should be one? I
love kids and we all thought that
sounded like a really great idea,
Swartz said. We did it for malls
in that area for a number of
years. I sold my business there
in 2000 and moved to the
Poconos area first and then five
years later, moved to South Jer-
sey.
Swartz approached Pennsyl-
vania Real Estate Investment
Trust last year to gauge its inter-
est in a signing Santa event for
this area. While the Cherry Hill
Mall declined his offer, Swartz
said the Moorestown Mall quick-
ly jumped on the program.
The first signing Santa event
was held last year and was so
successful, the Moorestown Mall
asked 360 Translations to host
another one this year, said Lisa
Wolstromer, senior marketing
director for the mall.
Its really nice to have this.
When a child is deaf, and they
come up, theyre so surprised.
They see that Santa can sign!
They can have a conversation
with Santa through sign lan-
guage for the first time in their
lives, she said. Also, some-
times the children arent hear-
ing impaired but the parents are,
so even they participate in this
magical event. Weve had par-
ents want to sit in Santas lap
also. Its great. We will do this
again next year. Its going to be
an annual program for us.
Swartz said he hopes that 360
Translations can bring the sign-
ing Santa events to malls
throughout the state and Penn-
sylvania.

The Greater South Jersey Cho-
rus, 90 voices strong, will step up
to perform two special family
concerts on the theme, Home for
the Holidays on Dec. 11 and Dec.
17: the first concert at Christ the
King Church in Haddonfield at
3:30 p.m.; the second at St. Isaac
Jogues Church in Marlton, at 8
p.m. Noted composer and Artistic
Director Dean Rishel will con-
duct both performances.
"We celebrate our 20th-an-
niversary season by offering a
holiday concert unlike anything
we have done recently, Rishel
said. We are featuring a guest
soprano who will bring real star-
quality to the program, singing
favorite seasonal pieces. We are
also giving our wonderful accom-
panist, Oleksii Ivanchenko, his
moment in the sun with a virtu-
osic piano Christmas solo. Weve
also planned a novelty number
for some laughs, and we intend to
have our audience join the pro-
ceedings. Seven guitarists help
out in a Ladino-language
Hanukkah song and we have an
old-fashioned sing-along to cap
off the evening. It will be a fun
time for all of us in this 20th an-
niversary year."
Rishel and the singers wel-
come all families and friends to
this specially programmed con-
cert.
Adult admission is $20, and all
accompanied children 14 or
under can attend free of charge.
Tickets may be purchased
from any chorus member, online
at www.greatersjchorus.org, or by
calling 482-8282.
Established in 1992, the 90-
voice, mixed chorus rehearses at
the Unitarian Universalist
Church in Cherry Hill on Mon-
day evenings from September
through May.
Members are draw from more
than 40 communities throughout
the Delaware Valley.
The groups history has been
distinguished by consistent artis-
tic growth, expanding audiences
and increasing regional recogni-
tion.
Interested singers are invited
to audition; please check the web-
site for details.
