GIENESSA VAEL O. TAN BSN.2 What is bowling?

In its simplest form, bowling is a sport in which the participant, a bowler, has ten frames to score as many points out of 300 possible per game. There are ten frames total with two shots per frame. If the bowler knocks down all of the pins on the first shot, it is called a strike and the frame is over. If the bowler knocks down all of the pins on the second shot, it is called a spare and the frame is over. If the bowler strikes in the tenth frame, they get two extra fill balls (bonus shots). If the bowler spares in the tenth frame, they get one fill shot. If the bowler crosses the fowl line, a miss is scored and the bowler attempts to knock down all ten pins on their second shot for a spare. A perfect game consists of 12 consecutive strikes in the same game and the score is 300 points, also known as a perfect game. Example of Score sheet:

How to score: Bowling-Scoring Basics One game of bowling consists of 10 frames, with a minimum score of zero and a maximum of 300. Each frame consists of two chances to knock down ten pins. Instead of points in football or runs in baseball, we use pins in bowling. Strikes and Spares Knocking down all ten pins on your first ball is called a strike, denoted by an X on the score sheet. If it takes two shots to knock down all ten pins, its called a spare, denoted by a /. Open Frames If, after two shots, at least one pin is still standing, its called an open frame. Whereas open frames are taken at face value, strikes and spares can be worth morebut not lessthan face value. How to Score a Strike A strike is worth 10, plus the value of your next two rolls. At minimum, your score for a frame in which you throw a strike will be 10 (10+0+0). At best, your next two shots will be strikes, and the frame will be worth 30 (10+10+10).

Say you throw a strike in the first frame. Technically, you don't have a score yet. You need to throw two more balls to figure out your total score for the frame. In the second frame, you throw a 6 on your first ball and a 2 on your second ball. Your score for the first frame will be 18 (10+6+2). How to Score a Spare A spare is worth 10, plus the value of your next roll. Say you throw a spare in your first frame. Then, in your first ball of the second frame, you throw a 7. Your score for the first frame will be 17 (10+7). The maximum score for a frame in which you get a spare is 20 (a spare followed by a strike), and the minimum is 10 (a spare followed by a gutter ball). How to Score an Open Frame If you don't get a strike or a spare in a frame, your score is the total number of pins you knock down. If you knock down five pins on your first ball and two on your second, your score for that frame is 7. Putting Everything Together Many people understand the basics but get confused when trying to add everything up. Your total score is nothing more than the sum of each individual frame. If you treat each frame individually, it's much easier to comprehend the scoring system. Ancient Polynesians rolled stones at objects from a distance of 60 feet (18.29 meters) - the same distance as from foul line to headpin. During the 3d and 4th centuries, bowling was a religious ceremony for determining absence of sin. German parishioners had to roll or throw an object at a pin or kegel (derivation of the word kegler for bowler) to avoid performing an act of penance. The earliest known legislation against bowling dates to 14th Century England. The sport had become so popular that people were neglecting the archery practice necessary for national defense during the 100 Year War (a misnomer, since it actually lasted from 1337 to 1453). Both King Edward III who reigned from 1327-1377 and King Richard II (1377-1399) banned the game. From Europe to America, bowling has been banned throughout the world for the "evil it leashes on society." A life size diorama at The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame portrays Martin Luther bowling on the single lane at the side of his home. A brochure from the Museum states that Luther, an avid bowler, "once preached a sermon which, if put into bowling vernacular, proclaimed we all strive for perfection in life. But if we roll a gutterball, all is not lost." Dutch Colonists brought bowling to America in the 17th century. The game consisted of nine pins set in a triangle. It was regularly played in an area of New York City still known as "Bowling Green". 1 X 20 20 2 7/ 17 37 3 72 9 46 4 9/ 20 66 5 X 30 96 6 X 22 118 7 X 15 133 8 23 5 138 9 6/ 17 155 10 7/3 13 168

In 1841, Connecticut banned "bowling at the game of ninepins" because of widespread gambling. Other states followed suit. It is popularly believed that today's game of tenpins was devised to circumvent the laws against the game of ninepins. An outdoor game for most of its history, indoor bowling became popular in the mid-nineteenth century after the introduction of indoor lanes in New York in 1840. History of bowling in Philippines: Bowling, one of the four big Bs of Philippine sports is no doubt a field where Filipinos have excelled in. Two Filipinos have been included in the 1993 inaugural International Bowling Hall of Fame, namely: Paeng Nepomuceno and Bong Coo. Bowling has also produced an Olympic gold medal and six Asiad gold medals for the Philippines. Too bad, bowling was just a demonstration sports when Arianne Cerdena won a gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Nevertheless, Filipinos have already etched their names on top of more than 100 million bowlers worldwide. Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno Paeng owns the following distinctions: "Greatest Filipino Athlete of All Time", "Athlete of the Century", and "International Bowling Athlete of the Millennium." He has won the World Cup in bowling four times in three decades. He could even win his fifth in fourth decade. He won his first World Cup in Tehran, Iran on November 19, 1976 when he was only 19 years old; his second World Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 1, 1980; his third World Cup in Le Mans, France on November 8, 1992; and his fourth World Cup in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 23, 1996. Paeng also won two equally prestigious international titles, namely: the International Tournament championship in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 8, 1984 and the World Tenpin Masters championship in London, England on March 7, 1999. On October 4, 2002, Paeng won a gold medal together with RJ Bautista in bowling's double event for men at the Asian Games held in Pusan, South Korea. All in all, Paeng has won over 100 tournament titles. He is the only bowler who had received the prestigious International Olympic Committee (IOC) President's Trophy and was the first enshrined in the International Bowling Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri in 1993. In November 1999, the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ) named Paeng as the "International Bowling Athlete of the Millennium." In a ceremony held in Dubai, United Arab Ermirates, an FIQ official cited Paeng with these words: "No international bowling athlete is more deserving of recognition than Paeng. In addition to his long list of well-known achievements as a world champion in three decades, Paeng truly has been and continues to be an extraordinary ambassador for our sport. I congratulate Paeng for receiving the highest award possible from the IOC. Being the first time an IOC recognition has been given to a bowling athlete, I can only say: On behalf of 100 million bowlers in the world, I salute Paeng Nepomuceno as the international bowling athlete of the millennium." Paeng, who is still an active player, was born in Manila on January 30, 1957. Truly, Paeng is a world champion and we are proud to say that Paeng is a Filipino! Basics in playing bowling:

The objective of the game is simple: knock down the 10 pins by throwing a rubber ball through a wooden lane. Not that simple is scorekeeping, but with the new electronic bowling alleys, that task is carried out by the computer most of the times, so you only have to concentrate in bringing those ten pins down. In case you are wondering, the best angle for shooting is called the pocket. That means the ball will roll between pins 1 and 3 (1 and 2 in case you are left-handed), and according to experts, this is the best technique to aim for a strike. Most beginners aim to hit the first pin right in the middle, but that will most likely lead you to leave some pins standing. Now here are some very simple tips you can follow to improve your bowling: Roll the ball, dont throw it: The bowling ball should be rolled along the lane, not thrown away like its some kind of stone. It should roll smoothly from the very start, so you should not hear that very typical clonk that all beginners get when they are just starting. Look at the pins, not the ball: You should always keep an eye on the pins when rolling the ball. Practise, practise, practise: If you want to get serious into the game, you should aim to bowl at least

a couple of times a week. If you cant make it, at least once a week. The more, the better. The best way is joining a local club, where you will find skilled people who can teach you their secrets, and also some newbies to play with Observe the pros and model them: Watch bowling tournaments on TV and, if possible, record it so The shoes are important: Keep them clean, specially the sole. Brush it so it wont slide too much. you can watch afterwards in slow motion. Pay very close attention to their movements.

Rules in playing bowling: A game of bowling consists of ten frames. In each frame, the bowler will have two chances to knock down as many pins as possible with his bowling ball. In games with more than one bowler, as is common, every bowler will take his frame in a predetermined order before the next frame begins. If a bowler is able to knock down all ten pins with the first ball, he is awarded a strike. If the bowler is able to knock down all 10 pins with the two balls of a frame, it is known as a spare. Bonus points are awarded for both of these, depending on what is scored in the next 2 balls (for a strike) or 1 ball (for a spare). If the bowler knocks down all 10 pins in the tenth frame, the bowler is allowed to throw 3 balls for that frame. This allows for a potential of 12 strikes in a single game, and a maximum score of 300 points, a perfect game. Types of Pin:
