Strong tale of Encore screening Celtic music night family troubles for stunning show about Gandhi
MET Opera Live In HD presents an encore screening of Satyagraha on Monday, December 5, at 6pm at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan. This opera is a unique and visually stunning production of Philip Glasss opera, which shares Gandhis philosophy of non-violent resistance as a path to social change. The opera, one of the most modern works in the Met repertory, tells the moving story of Gandhis early life in South Africa, when he formed his revolutionary philosophy of non-violent resistance. The protest techniques created by Gandhi and dramatised in Satyagraha are still being used by agents of social change around the world today. The work is performed in Sanskrit and the lyrics are drawn from the Bhagavad-Gita, a sacred Hindu text. The spectacular production, by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, uses a variety of innovative elements including largescale puppets, unusual props, and supertitles to dramatise Gandhis struggles. The performers, including stars Richard Croft, Rachelle Durkin, and Alfred Walker and conductor Dante Anzolini, are reprising their performances from the operas 2008 Met premiere, which received extraordinary critical acclaim. Tickets for this visually extravagant production are 18 (16) and are available to book now from Theatr Mwldans box office on 01239 621200, online at www.mwl dan.co.uk or via Smart Phone at mwlNEXT Saturday night there will be a fantastic Welsh country/Irish ballads singing event at the Llety Parc Hotel Aberystwyth, with all the proceeds going towards the Beacon of Hope Charity. TIME OUT
THEATR MWLDAN FILM SOCIETY November 27 @ 6.00 & 8.40 A SEPARATION (PG) Asghar Farhadi | Iran | 2011 | 123 The next Film Society screening at Theatr Mlwdan will be A Separation (PG) an Iranian film that plunges us into Tehran life with an urgent sense of reality, framed by a style of handheld realism. We meet a thirtysomething couple in the divorce courts: Simin insists she wants to leave Iran with their ten-year-old daughter Termeh; husband Nader wants to stay, not least because his elderly father has Alzheimers. The film examines differing attitudes in Iran to sta-
tus, gender and religion and is blessed by strong writing, characterisation and acting. A new domestic situation may seem everyday, but it proves to be a catalyst of potentially life-changing events. Lively and suspenseful as both drama and debate, A Separation employs a tricksy moral compass that shifts according to its viewpoint. Theatr Mwldans Film Society has been bringing the best in world cinema to west Wales for over 21 years. Full annual membership of Theatr Mwldans Film Society is just 66, which entitles you to free entry to all 30 Film Society films and 1.40 discount off all standard 2D cinema screenings at Theatr Mwldan (please note this offer does not apply to live broadcast screenings, 3D screenings or alternative content events).
