Installation failure: Fatal Error message on Windows 7

We are sorry that our software encountered an error while installing:

In order to install printer software for your printer on Windows 7, you must download some software and drivers from Microsoft before you can download and install software and drivers from HP. Your installation error may have been caused by not being connected to the Internet or by restarting your computer before Windows Update finished downloading the printer drivers. Also, Windows Update may have prompted you to restart your computer after downloading new drivers, but if you didnt see a green check mark next to each driver name, then the drivers didnt download completely, as seen in Figure 1 below.

Solution
1. Make sure that you have let the install program complete by following the onscreen instructions (if you don't see any HP software install screens, then it's already done).

2. Double-check that the printer software has been completely uninstalled by clicking Start
All Programs > HP. Do one of the following:

If you dont see an entry for HP, or if you dont see the printer listed under HP, then the printer has been uninstalled. Continue to step 3. If you see the printer listed under HP, click Uninstall and follow the onscreen instructions.

3. Unplug the USB cable from the printer and the computer. 4. Restart your computer. Note After the restart, double-click the icon on your desktop to reopen this document. 5. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.

6. Click Start

> Control panel > System and Security > Windows Update.

7. In the Important updates drop-down list, select Install updates automatically

8. Click OK.
9. Connect the printer to your computer with the USB cable.

10. When the Driver Software Installation window appears, be sure to wait until all of the drivers

have green checkmarks next to them before you restart your computer. Do not click Restart Now in the Windows Update dialog box until all of the drivers have green checkmarks next to them. Tip If you want the Windows Update dialog box to go away while you wait, click Postpone.

11. When all of the drivers have green checkmarks next to them, you can restart your computer. Note After the restart, double-click the icon on your desktop to reopen this document. 12. After the restart, download the Windows 7 driver for this printer, if you havent already:

a. Go to the HP driver search web page. b. Select the option to download drivers and software, and then type the name of the
printer in the search box. For example, type HP PSC 1400.

c.

Follow the prompts and make selections to display the software and drivers for your printer.

d. When prompted, select Windows 7 to view the driver download and CD-ordering options. e. If given a choice, select the full feature software and drivers link. This option may appear in an area labeled Drivers.

f. When prompted, click Save and download the software to your desktop or a folder on
your computer where you can easily find it. Run the HP Software installation program that you downloaded and follow the onscreen instructions. When the installation completes, try using your printer. If you successfully installed your HP printer, you're done! You can delete this document if you'd like. If the install was not yet successful, contact HP support, as described below.
