Course: Veterinary Gross Anatomy I Course code: BMSC 211 Credit hour: 4 (3+1) Target group: First year veterinary medicine students Semister: I Academic year: 2011/12 Instructors: Dr. Surafel A. /Getenet F. Course description The course of veterinary gross anatomy deals with the study of gross structure of the body of animals, which is the basis for understanding gross pathological lesions, surgical operations, diagnostic procedures etc. Lectures: chapters in veterinary gross anatomy I are: general account of anatomy (detention, classification, and methods of studding anatomy), classification and gross study of bones, joints and muscles, coelomic cavities and serous membranes, anatomy of the digestive system and the respiratory system. Important species differences are described with special emphasis given to those anatomical features important from clinical and production point of view. Practicals (3 hours/ week): dissection of fresh and preserved cadavers, use of mounted skeletons and plastic models make the basis of practical demonstration. Gross study of skeletons, joints, muscles, gastro intestinal and respiratory organs using ruminants as a model species and comparison with other domestic animals will be done. Course objectives: Know medical terms and concepts related to structural and functional morphology of animals Be able to describe the normal gross body structures, location and relative relationship of the different tissues, organs, systems Relate the form and structure of the different body parts of their function
