Math McGrath, Barbara B. The M&Ms Brand Color Pattern. 2002. Charlesbridge.

Objectives Children will learn to sort by colors, estimate, make graphs, and add (combine) sets. Introduction Today we will learn to sort by color, estimate, make graphs and add. Purpose The students will learn sorting by color, estimation, graphing by color, and combining sets. Procedure The day before, I will prepare 2 Ziploc bags labeled #1 and #2 with less than 30 M&Ms each, and Ziploc bags with less than 30 M&Ms for each student. I will print M&M graph, M&M adding, M&M sorting, and estimating sheet for each student. Before the introduction, I will prepare 4 stations labeled: estimation, sorting, graphing, and adding. After reading the book, I will explain to the students the 4 stations and what they need to do in each station. The students will be divided into 4 groups and rotate through the 4 stations. Each student will be given each a Ziploc bag of colored M&Ms. Estimation: Each student will be given an estimation sheet Students will be shown Ziploc bag #1 of M&M and asked to write their estimate of how many are in the bag. On a poster board divided into closest and unreasonable estimate; students estimate will be posted on whichever side their estimate belongs. Repeat with Ziploc bag #2. Sorting Each student will be given an M&M sorting sheet.

Students will be asked to sort their own bag of M&M and sort them by color. Then they have to count how many in each color and record their result to the appropriate color.

Graphing Each student will be given an M&M graphing sheet They will be asked to graph their M&M by color by using crayons to record the result in the graphing sheet. Each student will also be asked to write down which color they have the least and which color they have the most, then write down their answer. Adding Each student will be given an adding sheet. Students will be asked to pull out 3 green M&M out of their Ziploc bags and placed in the first box on their adding sheet, then write down 3 on the first box. They will be asked then to pull out 3 red M&M and place them on the second box of their adding sheet, then again write down 3 on the second box. They will be asked to combine the 3 green and 3 red M&Ms on the third box and count how many together, then record their answer on the third box. Repeat using different numbers and color combinations about four more times. At the end of the activity, I will let the children enjoy their bag of M&M. I will ask them which station they enjoyed most and which they had a hard time. I will ask them if they have any questions or if there is anything they do not understand. Resources M&Ms Brand Colored Pattern by Barbara McGrath book Ziploc bags with less than 30 M&Ms for each student Colored M&Ms Ziploc bags labeled #1 and #2 with less than 30 M&Ms each pencils crayons M&M graphing sheet for each student M&M sorting sheet for each student M&M adding sheet for each student estimation sheet for each student poster board Assessment I will check each students sheet and see if they understand the lesson. I should be able to get from their sorting sheet the answer to their graph sheet. Additional Activities Students will be able to use their mind and reasoning to estimate and validate that estimate.

They will be able to enjoy the M&Ms afterwards.
