Afflicting planets are Rahu, Ketu and respective functional
malefics for various ascendants. Afflicted planets are those
planets which have close conjunction/aspect of afflicting planets...
When two planets or a planet and midpoint of a particular house
have longitudinal difference between the conjunction/aspect
formed less than five degreees, the conjunction/aspect is
considered close. The impact of affliction is greater on weak
planets than the planets which are well placed and strong.
The above background, will help you in understanding the
impact of planetary influences more precisely and in a much
better way.
IMPACT
The Sagittarius and Leo ascendants are better as apart from
Rahu and Ketu the only functional malefic is the Moon. The
transit conjunctions of the Moon with natal positions are more
often but short lived as they take just a few h'ours in separation.
The Gemini ascendant is best as it does not have any
functional malefic other than Rahu and Ketu. Similarly, Aries
and Libra ascendants have Mercury only as functional malefic
apart from Rahu and Ketu. Transit Mercury takes just two
or three days in separation whenever it forms close malefic
conjunctions with or aspect to natal positions. The problems,
therefore, are short-lived.
On the other hand see the Cancer ascendent. Here, apart
from slow moving Rahu and Ketu, the slow moving planets
Saturn and Jupiter become functional malefics. Whenever
these four planets form transit conjunctions/aspects, they are
l'1ng lived and leave scars.

IMPACT OF ASCENDING SIGNS
INTRODUCTION
Identifying impact of aSl'f'nding (rising) signs is one of the
very important fields of horo opu roadlllg. The characteristics
of the lord of the rising sign fructify in full depending upon the
strength of the lord of the rising lign, This is more so if a
mooltrikona aiufI " ..,." in till"'" ""dunt, If the sion Capricorn
rises m tho nSlI'I"I.II,t and :.,'!IIIIIIS utterly weak and afflicted,
it will nut affoct the lungovlty badly, lhe reason IS the main
imp.ct of the planet pertains to ita mooltrikona sign. In case
AquariUS rises in the ascendant and Saturn is weak and badly
afflicted. it is a drawback for the longevity of the native in
addrtion to the poor physical development of the native for
making him industrious.
Before we proceed further, let us understand a few
preliminaries. Under the Systems' Approach, propounded by the
author. the horoscope reading is only done with reference to
the rising si'JlI i.e. the ascendant. The functional nature of the
planets IS dc..uted on the basis of placement of their mooltrikona
sruns. Cancer is considered as mooltrikona sign of the Moon.
The functional malefics are those planets whose mool-trikona
signs fall in the sixth, eighth or twelfth houses. All other
planets are treated as functional benefics. Based on this, the
functional malefics for various ascendants are-as under:- ., r.

The real pitiable condition is of Taurus, Virgo and Pisces
ascendants. Here, apart from Rahu and Ketu, three other
planets become functional malefics. The unfavourable incidents
In life are more frequent. Gravity is dependent on the natal
weak points. The Sun, Venus and Mercury are generally in
close proximity.
In the case of Virgo and Pisces ascendants the Sun is one
of the functional malefics and there are more chances of its
afflicting Venus or Mercury or both. For Taurus ascendant
Venus is a functional malefic and may afflict the Sun and
Morcury in addition to any other planetls) in a particular nativity.
For Capricorn ascendant the Sun is a functional malefic
In addition to Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu. Here again the chances of
the Sun afflicting a few planets are comparatively more.
For Scorpio and Aquarius ascendants, the fast moving
planets are functional malefics. Here the problems created due
to transit afflictions are frequent but short lived. The practical
applicability of these concepts have been amply illustrated in
the undermenrioned books:

I am taking up the discussion on the peculiarities of various
ascendants in this book.
When my article on this subject was pub'11shed in one of
the astrological journals, one reader raised the following points.
a) That the Systems' Approach is in clear departure from
the dicta of the ancients.
b) The lord of the asdt. for any native cannot and must not
be a malefic for the native.
The Sun and the Moon are exempted from Ashthama
Dosha.
As the Sun represents so many significant things in life
It could not be termed as malefic.
e) Exalted and Vargottama planets do not work as malefic.
Apart from the above, the reader quoted some classical and
modern commentators and discussed the charts presented by
me on the basis of derivatives used by the modern

commentators. While I have never entered into an argument
with those who have blocked their minds for developmental
experiences and reasearch based case studies, for the benefit
of those seeking truth and validity of the divine science,'
humbly, I state that I am open for inclusion of any valid
suggestions in the Systems' Approach. I now take up various
observations and give once again the rationale behind' the
Systems' Approach in the following paragraphs.
MISSING LINKS
Predictive competence has been the pursuit of the serious
students of the divine science of astrology. Astrology is a
science which is universally applicable leaving aside the bars
of caste, creed and nations. However, there were grey areas
which posed hinderance in achieving the predicitive accuracy.
_ These r include the functional nature of planets for a
particular nativity, afflicte p anets, met odology for study of
divisional (varga) charts, methodology for application oftranslf;
the role of remedial measures, etc. The laCK of clarity on these
has resulted in mushroom growth of such self-styled guides/
scholars, who even themselves could not understand the gamut
of astrology, both in the past and the present. The
approaches/pradicitive tools have to undergo an empirical test .]........
before adoption.,

THE CLASSICAL BASE "I

The main point acting as 'the Key' it'l predictive astrology is
the functional nature of planets. Chapter 34 of Brihat Parashar
Hora, dealing with the Yogakaraka planets, guides us to the
functional nature of planets for various ascendants. The salient
\ features are as under:
1. The planets with mooltrikona signs in dusthana houses, i.e.
sixth, eighth or twelfth houses act as malefics for the
concerned ascendant except:
a. Jupiter for the Cancer ascendant has been stated as
benefic.
b. Mercury for the Libra ascendant.has been stated as
benefic.
c. The Sun for the Capricorn ascendant has-been termed as

neutral.
d. Mars for the Scorpio ascendant has been termed as
neutral.
2. The lords ofthe second, third, eleventh and seventh houses
have been termed as rnalefics.
3. There are no hints for tho following:
a. Nature of thft Moon for the Aries and Sagittarius asdts.
b. Nature 0' r.i.: "rv for the Gemini asdt.
C. Nature 0' ..dUlIl 'ur tho Virgo ascendant.

montioned hereunder as per Brihat Parashar Hora:-

There appears to be no justification or logic why the lords
of the above four houses be treated as malefic planets as they
rule desirable and good significations more in comparison to
the inauspicious or undesirable significations. There are no hints
as to when the lord of the second or seventh house will inflict
death and when the same planet will bestow their auspicious
significations. This had been one of the vital missing links
for predictive accuracy.
Empirical studies undertaken by me show that the second
and seventh lords do not act as death inflicting planets except
in the case of Saturn for the Cancer ascendant. Here Saturn is
lord of the eighth house as well. Rather, the lords of second
and seventh houses when functional benefics and strong,
generate pleasant circumstances in life. When weak and
afflicted, these planets are also amenable to sufferings as any
other planet. The lord of the third house also cannot be a death
inflicting planet for the parents if fourth and ninth houses as also

their significators, the Moon and the Sun are strong. The lord
of the eleventh house is also beneficial for all ascendants except
'for Pisces and Taurus ascendants.
Therefore, for interpreting the effect of planets on a more
logical basis I had formed the hypothesis that for each ascendant
.the functional malefic planets are only those planets whose
mooltrikona signs fall in the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses.
All other planets act as functional benefics. The malefic
effects are clearly evidenced whenever the function I m s

close conjunction with or aspect the weak natal positions they
generate unhappy events. The learned friends can test the
accuracy of this finding on their own horoscopes or on the
horoscopes of the persons with whom they are fully familiar.
This is very useful for accurately finding out the nature of
events in the nearfuture and for rectification of the birth charts.
A meticulous study of chapter 24 of Brihat Parashar Hora
will show that any planet going to the eighth house suffers and
the significations ruled by the planet in question suffer badly.
The indications of the eighth house have been given as
longevity, battle, enemies, forts, inheritance and the incidents of
past and future births. Broadly, the nature of the eighth house
has been termed as malefic and the close conjunction/aspect
of the lord of the eighth house containing a mooltrikona sign
is always baneful for the planet or the midpoint of the house
involved in such a close conjunction/aspect. It is always
helpful in the interpretation of a horoscope if the nature of
planets has been delineated on the basis of the tested hypothesis
mentioned in the preceding paragraph.
I have extensively dealt with the various inconsistencies,
confusions and contradictions in my book, "Systems' Approach
for Interpreting Horoscopes." I have also dealt with the
approach for the Study of Divisional Charts and transit in a
meaningful way in my book on this subject. As stated earlier
the indentification of functional malefics as per Systems'
Approach and identifying weak and afflicted planets will bring
you so near to the accurate results and so simply that you will
be wonder struck.

five degrees or l e s ~ . The conjunctions/aspects amongst
functional benefics confer name, fame & wealth while
functional malefics afflict and spoil the indications of houses/
planet" with which they form close conjunctions/aspects.
It is with this background in view that I have now taken up
the subject, "The Impact of Ascending Signs." Without
blindly accepting what the version of Brihat Parashar Hora in
circulation says. I would seek the indulgence of learned readers
in testing the truth of this dicta. The present version may have
incorrect record of the shlokas or interpolations but I certainly
do not doubt and disbelive the wisdon of the seers.
The authenticity of the Brihat Parashar Hora and other
classical commentaries cannot be vouched for inclusion of
interpolations and it is a well known fact that the SO called
classical texts and commentaries are not the complete
documentation of the principles enunciated by the propounding
Maharishis. All of them were recorded at a date much later than
their propagation. Several confusions, contradictions and
inconsistencies have crept into the available texts.
Perfection in predictions can be' achieved by anyone learning
and practising astrology with the method of science. The
method of science is recording and analysing the observations
based on the hints available in the classical and modern
literature. forming testable hypothesis for logical questions and
adopting the principles which stand the test of time. Therefore,
banking solely on the available classical texts might not be
conducive for the development of the divine science. The
, pursuit of the method of science does not mean denouncine
the ancient sages. Rather an attempt IS being made to weed
out the interpolations.
The principle of identifying the functional nature of planets
on the positional placement of the mooltrikona signs of the
planets. render null and void the following prevalent, so called
classical principles.

That the second and seventh lords act as maraka planets
(death inflicting planets).
That the planets placed in the seventh and second houses
act as marakas.
That the planets associated with the lords of the second and
seventh houses act as marakas.

Moon.
That the transit can be applied in isolation.
That the planet Saturn, except in the case of ascendants
ruled by it and Venus, does not act as benefic.
That the lord of the ascendant always proves beneficial for
the native. Venus as lord of Taurus ascendant and Mars as
lord of the Scorpio ascendant as per Systems' Approach
become functional malefics for the native because of their
mooltrikona signs falling in the sixth house.
To sum up, a systematic approach for analysing horoscopes
on the basis of functional nature of planets, close/exact
conjunctions/aspects together with reading natal charts in
conjunction with transit position of operating planets with
reference to the ascendant and truatu: the degrees rising in the
ascendant as the middle point of ai, : i .. I,;"I " s.JIlve Infallible
results.. which establish the divine science of astrology as a
super-science. The present disbelief in astrology is because
of the continuous dependence of Ill! Iurn savants on the record
of classical principles which has t , II full of interpolations/
, omissions due to the time "dP between the propounding time
, and the recording time of the said principles. To establish it as
a science we have to demonstrate to the world the observations
recorded by way of case studies based on the universal
application of only the valid classical principles. We have to
make a creative contribution to the enrichment of the divine
science.

EXALTED AND VARGOTTAM
Exalted and Vargottam malefics and at
the same time afflicting by close conjunction/aspect 'other

weak planet or planets or mid point of a house do cause
sufferings with regard to the significations ruled by the said
planet/house. The matter will be clarified in the succeeding
paragraph.
ROLE OF PLANETS
A planet plays its role in the following ways:-
As a natural significator for various things.
As a lord of the house to protect and promote the
significations of the house ruled.
c) Its relationship with other planetary configurations in
a nativity.
The strength of a planet governs the role of the planet for
(a) and (b) above in protecting and promoting the house and
significations ruled. Thy fynctignal nature of the planet
governs the role as at Ie) above. ./

Regarding the "Neechbhanga Raj Yoga" it is not coming

from the propounding father but has found its place in the
subsequent classical commentaries like phaladipika, etc. The
Systems' Approach does not believe in this concept and treats
the debilitated planet as a weak planet as classified by Brihat
Parashar Hora Shastra, Uttrakalarnrita, etc.
CHAPTER 2
HOW TO ANALYSE A HORO- \
SCOPE IN THREE MINUTES
A National Conference on Futurology and Astrology was
organised by Bharat Nirman in New Delhi in December. 1993. I
was invited to deliver a talk on the subject of TECHNIQUES
.OF PREDICTIONS. Well, while there are various techniques
including application of Parashari System, Jaimini System. Tajak
System, etc., I chose the subject "HOW TO ANALYSE A
HOROSCOPE IN THREE MINUrES". I am sharing my views
with readers which will help them in their efforts of helping the
humanity with minimum use of time. I will discuss the matter

Noting down the strength of functional malefics is also necessary
because as explained earlier, every planet has many roles to play.
STEP VII
ASSESS LONGEVITY
If a Mooltrikona sign rises in the ascendant pay special
attention to the longevity by seeing the strength of planets and
the functional nature of the operating planets i.e. the main and
sub-period lords. Most of the planets being weak and severe
afflictions to the ascendant or to the ascendant lord with
operating period of functional malefics give short life.
Similarly placed planets with operating period of functional
benefics give middle span of life.
Weak planets keep the significations to a lower level,
if unafflicted. Severely afflicted planets cause tragedies or fatal
diseases. The operating periods reduce/increase the impact.
Pay special attention to the transit strength of operating planets.
STEP VIII
ASTRAL REMEDIES
Two way astral remedies are suggested. Charities or
propitiatory methods for functional malefics. Strengthening
measures for weak functional benefic planets through
KAVACH made of mystical numbers, Colour and Gem Therapy

Effective remedial measures have been suggested for
various ascendants at the end of each Chapter on the twelve
ascendants. These remedial measures help in warding off the
evils and generating good results for the native concerned.

thereby reduced. '
MERCURY
The good and unafflicted placement of Mercury indicates
his intelligence, initiatives. good communication skills and sharp
intellect. This is one of the reasons of his acquiring his present
status.

VENUS
Strong but afflicted. Due to affliction gives mental tension
in its operating period which generated the problem of
hypertension. Strong Venus rules the fourth house and gives
comforts, pleasant disposition of wife and affluent assets. Gave
good education in the fields of finance and law ruled by Venus.
SATURN
Rules the eighth house and the longevity in particular as
its mooltrikona sign is placed in the eighth house. Eighth house
rules inheritance, longevity and marital tie. The good placement
of strong Saturn enables it to bear the affliction of functional
malefic Ketu to a large extent. During the operating periods of
Saturn and Ketu some amount of tension generates for the
significations of the Saturn in general and eighth house in
particular.
RAHU
Occupies its sign of exaltation in the eleventh house. This
gives material affluence and as it is unafflicted and Quite away
from the mid point of the eleventh house, there are very remote
chances of a sizable loss. However, in its operating periods
it delays and denies the fulfilment of desires.
KETU
It does not form any close conjunction/aspect other than
the Saturn, discussed above, under the planet Saturn.
GENERAL
;Jt, During transit, whenever, functional malefics form close
conjunction/aspect with the weak/afflicted natal positions,
which are the Sun,Mars and Saturn in the sample horoscope,
problems with regard to the significations ruled by these
planets, may be expected to be triggered.

the students with an extremely simple, yet accurate, method of

ARIES ASCENDANT
The natives having Aries as ascendant are inherently agile,
courageous, intelligent, impatient, leaders, fighters, industrious
and enterprising. They have abundant amount of energy and
are untiring. These Qualities show their true impact depending
upon the strength of Mars in the nativity. Aries is the
mooltrikona sign of Mars and therefore Mars represents the
native fully. Apart from Rahu and Ketu, the only functional
malefic is Mercury. Budhaditiva Yoga i.e. combination of the
Sun and Mercury signifying extra-ordinary intelligence, do not
show positive results for the native. An Aries native with
deep combust Mercury means that the Sun forms close
conjunction with the functional malefic, Mercury, and gets
afflicted. Such natives have weak digestion, are not sharp and
are impulsive. Since Aries born are men of deeds they believe
less in astrology.
The inherent Qualities of the Aries sign make the native
affluent, authoritative and leader in the armed forces. The
influence of Saturn turns them towards engineering and
entrepreneurship. They earn lot of wealth by persistent efforts.
The natives excel in the fie los governed by the planet or mid-
point of a house forming close conjunction or aspect with a
strong Mars in the nativity. The transit unfavourable influences
are less. The persistent unfavourable influences with long
repercussions are only due to the impact of transit Rahu-Ketu

combustion. All the planets in the nativity are weak while the
planets ruling the family and emotional life, Mars, Mercury and
