Library Remodel
Shown is a typical library project at existing High Schools and Middle Schools. Most libraries were designed for the population of students they currently serve. Based on todays standards they are inadequate. It is not always possible to physically expand the footprint of the building due to site and budget constraints. Schools often have to make due with the space they have and modernize per the available funds. Because there were no computers and other modern devices when these libraries were constructed, quick fixes have been employed to adapt new technologies. The upgrades have often resulted in nonfunctional and hazardous layouts. Several programs have contributed to improving libraries, but the concept of a library requires re-examination.

Library Remodel
Shown is a project at an existing elementary school. Even existing elementary schools are short on space. To accommodate larger populations of students then schools were initially designed for, valuable classroom spaces have been re-purposed to be used as libraries. Over 100 similar renovations have occurred at elementary schools at LAUSD. Although the conversion programs have been successful for literacy programs, classes have often been accommodated in portable buildings.

Media Labs: Enhancing the learning experience.

August2011

Envisioning how libraries will be affected by the development of new technologies, and the changing needs and expectations of users, is more than an intellectual exercise. What schools anticipate as necessary to provide users future information needs affects how they choose to direct their resources today.

Library of the Future

Reconfiguring Existing Library Rethinking the historical model of the library may be the challenge. Our traditional idea of libraries is rows of books flanked by access aisles. The addition of reading desks and computer workstations further enhanced the requirements of the schools library. The majority of existing LAUSD school library sites do not conform to current accessibility or up to date technology requirements and are due for an upgrade. This is an opportunity to rethink how we access and use information today. The internet is an omnipresent force in how we acquire information, and hard bound books and printed newsletters have lost their exclusivity. This trend will only increase in the future and the reliance on printed media will be less and less. Even seasoned media outlets and major publishers are cutting back substantially. In reconfiguring the existing library, consider the use of the computer as primary in gathering data and books to be stored and accessed when necessary. From students surveyed, information is acquired via internet sources over 90% of the time versus traditional books, magazines and maps. In rethinking the Library of the Future, we might adapt the over used yet extremely insightful quote by Architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, less is more, and in facilities translated into better use of less space. The library becomes a media/computer lab of sorts, considerably eliminating rows and rows of access walkways. The new library becomes a gateway into a world of information beyond the perimeters of the school. The new layout will also include small group collaboration areas to encourage intellectual discussion and team building skills. This new reuse of space will eliminate the expansion of the footprint of the building or altering the buildings historical status. Accessibility and electrical upgrades will still be required, including renovation design and construction.

A Successful Library Plan In order for the Library of the Future concept to be successful, LAUSD must have a commitment to managing the information technology infrastructure. The new Library will have to be updated with hardware and software, and the systems must be maintained regularly. Obsolete systems should be replaced in a timely manner to bring the most benefit to the school and the students. In addition, an ongoing professional development program needs to be established along with staffing, and long term funding considerations. Developing new educational programs that not only teach how to use new technology, but to maintain and service it are necessary requirements for the Libraries of the Future. This is an inevitable result and consequence of the information age. The sooner we embrace the concept as a school district the more efficiently we can serve the children of Los Angeles.

The Renovation
Renovate existing library to serve as a media center with electronic book access systems. Commonly requested book titles will be available in the library and in high density book shelves. The scope will include ADA, ITD upgrades without adding costly expansion to the building envelope.

Expand existing back room area adjacent to library. Add high density shelving in back room, leaving more open space in library and area to provide necessary ADA upgrades.

Reconfiguring the existing Library to accommodate accessibility requirements and new computer based research and learning will address current needs and trends. Old and obsolete book collections will be removed or stored to make room for modern up to date collections. Overflow of books will be located in high density book shelves in the space directly behind the reference desk.

Copying and printing stations will be set-up in the library back-room for student use.

The LAUSD Goal The goal of the Los Angeles Unified School should be to create electronic book and access systems by expanding the existing LAUSD Digital Library, the established Los Angeles Public Digital Library System and a verity of other libraries. The electronic books will not eliminate individual library collections, but rather support them. Giving students and the school community access to expanded book collections like never before. The electronic access to books and media will allow space for growth and provide modern and up-to-date collections of books and other media which can be shared and can add more value to the students and community they serve. Currently the LAUSD libraries are unable to expand physically due to budget constraints and other facilities related concerns. Due to the lack of space the schools are hesitant to expand their collections, therefore resulting in outdated matter. Often, the overflow of books are put into storage spaces and storage bins and made inaccessible to the students.

Concept Interior Existing Library Interior

Existing Libraries The Original LAUSD Libraries were built to serve half or one third of the current population of students. The building trend has lagged far behind to match the actual school growth. Due to high design, construction cost and simply increasing the building footprint on the highly impacted school sites, it has become extremely challenging to upgrade the schools. More profoundly, the school sites were created during an era when most of the technology we use today was not even invented. Adapting the existing sites has been an ongoing challenge. ADA, Building Code & DSA Challenges Due to ADA, Building Code & DSA challenges, most of the existing libraries are not compliant in some form. Adapting to the current requirements will require further reduction of book stacks due to the creation of accessible aisles, seismic anchoring and therefore, further reducing book containment capacity. If the school district doubled the square footage of each library at each school, the book count for the student population would still be insufficient including extremely expense to stock and manage.

Library of the Future It is important to recognize that there are no good reasons to design school libraries that are based on outdated models. Everyone involved in the planning of new and existing school libraries should work together to achieve innovative design. Recognizing that instructional technology and library programs overlap in so many ways, and that benefits can be reaped with staff members working closely as a team rather than as separate entities. School officials can strive for a philosophical, functional, and physical merger of the school library with the IT program. Teachers can work with (and learn from) students, school librarians, and IT staff; and School libraries can become a place that will continue to endure in their new modern form as an essential part of the learning process. The new form the library takes should be easily adaptable to evolving advances in technology and provide seamless transitions as new ideas and techniques emerge. The library can expand programs beyond the library walls and create virtual libraries capable of reaching and serving students wherever they are, both at and away from school.

Information Wall
The concept for the Information Wall features computer screens mounted on glass panels. This allows for one on one interaction with the media user, yet does no isolate the individual while working for long periods of time. The screens can be set-up with general reading material or the book of the week for example. The user can adjust the heights of the monitors and can use them sitting or standing. Assisted listening devices can be plugged in for use.
Transparent glass surface for an interactive environment. Adjustable screen heights for user comfort

This High-Tech display can be installed at various locations on campus.

Using personalization technology to profile subscriber interests

The mobile Internet represents a massive opportunity for mobile operators and content providers. Today there are more than 2 billion mobile subscribers, with well over 3 billion predicted by the 2008. However, despite significant improvements in handsets, infrastructure, content, and charging models, mobile users are still struggling to access and locate relevant content and services. Info Glut. With Just too much information available, it is difficult to decipher what is reliable. An important part of this so-called content-discovery problem relates to the navigation effort that users must invest in browsing and searching for mobile content. Using personalization technology to profile subscriber interests in order to automatically adapt mobile portals to their learned preferences. The School Board can review and define their perimeters, and these perimeters can be specified further by a teachers academic plan and then the student user. A result can be set a learning plan or series of articles set-up for people to access at anytime in the school library or anywhere else. The facilities goal would be to set up the construction and Information Technology infrastructure for current use, future advances and growth.
