National romps home to a second term

Dev NaDkarNI
Opinion polls throughout New Zealand Prime Minister John Keys first term in Parliament have consistently shown him to be the countrys most popular prime minister ever. That popularity has been translated into victory putting him and the National Party back in Parliament for the second time after last weeks election. The party polled a record percentage of votes but narrowly missed the chance to be able to govern alone one of the most difficult things to achieve in the countrys rather complex MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) electoral system. But with the help of long time minor party allies ACT and United Future, both having just about won the election in greatly depleted numbers (these minor parties have been able to muster just a single MP each, just about avoiding political oblivion), Keys National Party was able to fend off even the remotest possibility by all other parties to come together and propose an alternative. With an increased share of vote, National improved its position over the 2008 poll and its leadership is undoubtedly relieved that it has ended up in a far stronger position than what many of the political commentators had predicted. Its biggest fear would have been to preside over an inherently unstable government, supported by a ragtag coalition of disparate interests and agendas. Utterly decimated in the election was the Labour Party, which polled its lowest ever share of votes (just over 27 per cent against predictions of at least 30 per cent) in its entire 95 year history. Labour has been on a decline after Helen Clark lost the 2008 elections and left the party and the country to head the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York. It garnered just 34 seats against Nationals 60, losing as many as nine. It lost some of its best parliamentarians in the process. Among other loyal groups, Labour has traditionally drawn its support from a large number of immigrants living in New Zealand particularly the electoral constituencies around southern and western Auckland. While it is not known exactly which way immigrants cast their votes, it is suspected that significant numbers simply stayed home or voted for the Green Party. The big surprises of the election were the rise and rise of the Green Party (winning 13 seats and taking their share of votes for the first time to over 10 per cent) and the resurrection from the grave of Winston Peters New Zealand First Party (8 seats; 6.8 per cent). It is unlikely that the immigrants vote went to the nationalist and one time strongly antiimmigrant Peters in any significant numbers. The party did have an Indian candidate in the race, though. Reams will be written on how it managed this stunning victory in the coming weeks and months. As many pundits had expected, the Maori Party was affected because of the twin effects of resentment by a sizable number of people who seemed against the partys support of the centre-right National Party in the first term. The second reason was a split in the party because of the formation of the Mana Party, which managed to win a single seat. National and the Maori Party are in talks for working together. Logically, the Maori Party should support National because, even for the sake of argument, if it supports a grand

Prime Minister John Key will have to prioritise measures to boost the economy in his second term

With an increased share of vote, National improved its position over the 2008 poll and its leadership is undoubtedly relieved that it has ended up in a far stronger position than what many of the political commentators had predicted.

As HIV diagnoses continue to rise in New Zealand, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) and New Zealanders affected by HIV, marked World AIDS Day on Thursday, 1 December. In 2010, 149 people were diagnosed with HIV in New Zealand, continuing the trend of increased numbers since 2003. While figures from the AIDS Epidemiology Group at the University of Otago showed a sharp decline in new HIV diagnoses for heterosexual New Zealanders, 2010 was the worst year on record for gay and bisexual men in New Zealand with 95 new diagnoses of HIV. Shaun Robinson, Executive Director of the NZAF says, The epidemic is in a resurgent phase due to changes in treatment, community perceptions and sexual networking. As the epidemic has become less visible over the years, a certain complacency around sexual safety has crept in. A clear and determined focus on HIV prevention strategies is needed now, more than ever before. The global theme of World AIDS Day, Getting to Zero has been adopted by New Zealand organisations. Getting to Zero focuses on three aspirational messages; zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS related deaths and

zero discrimination. Launched by UNAIDS earlier, this year, these three messages also reflect issues that are at the forefront of New Zealands HIV epidemic; HIV prevention initiatives, access to essential treatment and equality for people living with HIV. The key to ending the HIV epidemic is increasing rates of condom use in the communities most affected by HIV, says Robinson. Condoms remain the single most effective tool in reducing the onward transmission of HIV. The National Institutes for Health in the US confirm that condoms reduce the probability of transmission per sex act by 95 per cent when used correctly and consistently; a figure supported by the World Health Organisation. Robinson says, The best estimate of the number of people living with HIV in New Zealand in 2010 is 1800. The majority of these will be gay and bi-sexual men. Thats 1800 people who have been needlessly infected. While New Zealand has one of the best records in the world for controlling the HIV epidemic, World AIDS Day is a sobering reminder that there are many people we still need to reach. An increased focus on safe sexual behaviour will be the driving force behind the NZAFs initiatives for 2012.

About 200 members and guests, including representatives of the New Zealand Government attended the function. Sir William Birch, a former New Zealand Minister of Finance, Ramesh Patel, a New Zealand Olympian, Judge Ajit Singh, Auckland City Councillor Des Morrison and Member of Parliament Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi also attended the event among several other community luminaries.

Auckland has kept its rating of the third best city in the world in Mercers 2011 Quality of Living survey. First and second cities were Vienna and Zurich. New Zealand cities continue to offer world-class quality of living standards and excellent working conditions for overseas expatriates, promising a retreat from economic and political unrest, according to the survey. Major New Zealand cities rank amongst the worlds top 37 cities for overall quality of living, dominating the rankings in the Asia Pacific region for the fourth year running. Auckland is unmoved in 3rd place and Wellington ranked 13th, both retaining consistent rankings over the past four years. Across the Tasman, Australian cities remain stable with Sydney (11) ranking the highest, followed closely by Melbourne (18) and Perth (21). The 2011 rankings have seen a convergence between Canberra (26), Adelaide (30) and Brisbane (37) all following close behind. Georgina Harley, Leader of Mercers Information Product Solutions business, said organisations and governments rely on clear and objective information on quality of living differences between cities when relocating employees from one country to another to ensure they compensate them fairly. New Zealand remains an attractive destination for skilled workers who want a high quality of life coupled with economic and physical security. In contrast to Europe and the United States, New Zealand has a relatively strong economic outlook which increases its appeal as a safe haven from economic uncertainty, Ms Harley said. New Zealands high living standards provide a potentially compelling case for attracting international talent to our shores. Employers should promote these benefits when undertaking international recruitment and secondment programs as part of their efforts to address skills shortages, she said. Mercers global survey is based on an evaluation of 39 criteria for each city, grouped in 10 categories, including political and socio-economic environment, medical and health considerations, education, transport and housing. The survey covers 221 cities which are compared to New York as the base city. Ms Harley said a stable economy is only one part of the picture, as New Zealand cities continue to tick all the boxes when it comes

to assessing living conditions for overseas workers. New Zealand cities consistently score highly on all liveability factors, providing expatriates with quality housing, excellent infrastructure, comprehensive health care, a wide selection of restaurants and other amenities, as well as a good education and environment for their families, she said. Global overview Vienna has the best living standard in the world, according to the Mercer 2011 Quality of Living Survey. Zurich and Auckland follow in second and third position, respectively, and Munich is in fourth with Dsseldorf and Vancouver sharing fifth place. Frankfurt is in seventh, followed by Geneva in eighth, while Copenhagen and Bern share ninth place. The cities with the lowest quality of living are Khartoum, Sudan (217), Port-auPrince, Haiti (218), NDjamena, Chad (219), and Bangui, Central African Republic (220). Baghdad, Iraq (221) ranks last in Mercers table. This year, the survey separately identifies those cities with the highest personal safety ranking based on internal stability, crime levels, law enforcement effectiveness and the host countrys international relations. Luxembourg tops this personal safety ranking, followed by Bern, Helsinki and Zurich all ranked at number two. Vienna ranks fifth, while Geneva and Stockholm both rank sixth. Baghdad (221) is the worlds least safe city, followed by NDjamena, Chad (220), Abidjan, Cte dIvoire (219), Bangui, Central African Republic (218), and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (217). Slagin Parakatil, Senior Researcher at Mercer, commented: Companies need to keep on top of current developments to ensure that their compensation packages remain competitive and continue to motivate expatriate employees. That means reviewing major events, such as social unrest, economic turmoil or natural disasters and their impact on the success of overseas placements. The top-ranking cities for personal safety and security are in politically stable countries with good international relations and relatively sustainable economic growth. Most of the low-scoring cities are in countries with civil unrest, high crime levels and little law enforcement, said Mr. Parakatil.

Sportsfield budget gets $87.5 million increase

The quality of sportsfields across the region is set to improve with a capital funding boost of $87.5 million included in the Auckland Council draft Long-term Plan. The Strategy and Finance Committee approved the additional funding, which would take the total budget for this work over the next 10 years up to $172.8m. There was also additional funding for operation expenditure. There is increasing demand for use of our regions sportsfields and we need to provide playing surfaces that can stand up to the high use in Aucklands wet winters, says committee chair Penny Webster. The community has told us loud and clear that during winter it is frustrating that our sportsfields are often closed because they have become too wet. With this significant boost in budget we are going to be able to rectify the supply and demand problems we are currently facing. An amendment was put forward for an $103 million increase over 10 years but the figure of $87.5 million was recommended by the council because we believe that will cover projects that are achievable in the next decade. She adds that the programme of developing sportfields is the largest in New Zealands history and the additional funds will make a big difference. Officers will now need to begin the process of putting together a works programme. Discussions on the draft Long-term Plan continue this week. The committees recommendations will be considered for approval by Auckland Councils governing body on 30 November. Those recommendations will then need to be audited. In February 2012 councillors will adopt the draft LTP, which will then be published for public consultation. This is when Aucklanders will be able to have their say on the priorities identified. The council will adopt the Long-term Plan (2012-22) in June 2012.

Aucklanders should check before they chop because many trees in the region are protected, and will remain so when a law change comes into effect on 1 January 2012. Councillor Ann Hartley, chair of Auckland Councils Regional Development and Operations Committee, says it is vital people check with council before they take any action to fell or prune trees. Changes to the Resource Management Act, removing blanket protection of trees on private land in urban areas from 1 January 2012, do not apply to trees scheduled in district plans. And, in many parts of Auckland, larger non-scheduled trees on private land will still be protected. This means you will need a resource consent to fell or remove the tree." In 2009, Parliament amended the Resource Management Act 1991 to remove general (blanket) tree rules in urban areas, with effect from 1 January 2012. The amendment did not change the existing level of protection for notable trees listed in district plan schedules, or trees in parks or reserves and along roads. An Environment Court ruling earlier this year also clarified that various trees "specifically identified" in a district plan, even though not scheduled, will have continued protection

after 1 January 2012. These include clusters of trees and trees in coastal areas. Council staff are compiling information to help Aucklanders understand where tree protection rules are removed on 1 January 2012, and where they remain in force. This material will published on Auckland Councils website www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz and assistance provided via councils call centre, planning and resource consent teams. The council says that if you fell or damage a protected tree, you may be prosecuted and fined. General tree protection rules will still apply to trees in the Hauraki Gulf islands, the Waitakere Ranges and in parts of all former city and district council areas, including much of Rodney and North Shore. If you are uncertain whether trees on your land are protected, phone the council on (09) 301 0101 for assistance, said Councillor Hartley. additional trees for scheduling In an associated move, plan changes adding about 1800 notable trees from 4000 nominated by the public will soon be publicly notified. The public will have the chance to make submissions to the council, once the district plan changes have been notified.

Auckland Council collecting opinions on rubbish

Public consultation has started today on Auckland Councils draft plan for managing rubbish in the region. The council is asking Aucklanders to consider how the region can reduce its waste even further. The draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan includes proposals to standardise household kerbside collection across Auckland to help achieve a 30% reduction in kerbside waste by 2018.

turned into valuable products, like compost. We need to get our waste sorted. This draft plan includes incentives for Aucklanders to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw out, and the tools to help us do it. Collectively, we can make a huge difference to the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. If the new services proposed are adopted in 2015, by 2022 well have diverted over 500,000 tonnes from landfill.

Weekend delays on motorway at Newmarket

The NZ Transport Agency reminds drivers to avoid the Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) southbound over Newmarket this weekend 3 and 4 December because of essential work on the two new viaducts. Three of four southbound motorway lanes will be closed so that the NZTA can concrete the 1.1 metre-wide gap between the new northbound and southbound Newmarket viaducts to make one complete structure an 18 hour-long operation known as the Stitch. The lanes need to be closed to help keep the new viaducts as still as possible to allow the concrete Stitch to set, says the NZTAs State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker. The closures will cause disruption for southbound drivers and it is vital that people plan their journeys and allow extra time for their travel or avoid the viaduct while we work on this busy stretch of motorway. The closures start at 6pm on Saturday, 3 December, and the lanes will be re-opened by midday on Sunday, 4 December. The Stitch does not affect northbound lanes. There shouldnt be any hold up for fans travelling on the motorway for Saturdays Cold Chisel concert at the Vector Arena. However, the Stitch will be well under way when they are returning home and there will be signposted diversions from the Gillies Road off-ramp to the St Marks Road on-ramp to help keep any disruption to a minimum, Mr Parker says. We will be doing everything we can to keep traffic flowing and appreciate the support of drivers as we complete necessary work to bring improved safety and travel times to a very busy section of the motorway network when the Newmarket project is completed. After the Stitch is completed, work will continue to prepare the new northbound half of the viaduct for traffic. Switching traffic from the existing northbound viaduct to its replacement will take place over Auckland Anniversary weekend, 28-30 January. This will involve closing all three northbound lanes of the motorway at Newmarket for 36 hours. Its a critical few weeks for the Newmarket project - one of our most important undertakings as part of the NZTAs Motorways Summer Season programme to improve the flow of traffic safely through central Auckland says Mr Parker.

The plan also introduces new initiatives to divert recyclables, food and garden waste and other materials from landfill and make better use of them. Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse said Aucklanders are already great recyclers, but theres more to do. This is a plan that affects all Aucklanders its about our environment and our communities. We want to hear feedback and great ideas from households, businesses and community groups on how we should deal with waste. Submissions open today and close at 4pm, 31 January 2012. Information is available and submissions may be made online at aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/ wasteplan. The draft plan, summary and submission form can also be downloaded or picked up from a local board office, council service centre or library, and forms returned by freepost. Deputy Mayor Hulse continued: This submission period is the start of a conversation about waste management in Auckand. Well be asking Aucklanders to tell us what they think and, in the future, well be working with local communities to make the agreed changes. The lengthy submission time reflects the importance of getting Aucklanders involved over the busy festive season. A public engagement campaign launching in December will encourage Aucklanders to consider how the city can deal with waste. We all need to start treating our waste as a resource, not rubbish, said Councillor Wayne Walker. Every year, more than $8 million worth of recyclables ends up in the rubbish. And the 97,000 tonnes of food and garden waste that we throw away could be

Collectively, we can make a huge difference to the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. If the new services proposed are adopted in 2015, by 2022 well have diverted over 500,000 tonnes from landfill.

Auckland Council Manager of Infrastructure and Environmental Services John Dragicevich emphasised the plan is not just about households. Auckland Council will also encourage businesses and the waste industry to reduce waste. Well be advocating for legislation change, for things like refunds on beverage containers. This has the potential to lift container recycling rates to 90%, well ahead of the current 30-40% in New Zealand, but it would need to be a national approach. Studying best practice in other for ward-thin king cities has been a key element of preparing the plan, continued Mr Dragicevich. Weve looked at whats worked in waste management around the world and believe weve come up with a suite of services that will work for Aucklanders and have the best impact on waste. A 1000-page Waste Assessment that reviewed current and forecast demand for waste services in Auckland also informed the draft plan. In March 2011, councillors supported a strategic direction of continuing with the current services and streamlining where possible, establishing new systems to collect and recycle food and/ or garden waste (which makes up 40-50% of the household waste stream) and exploring a mix of measures to gain more operational influence over the entire waste stream. The public and businesses may also attend a hearing to speak in support of their submission (March 2012). Auckland Council will consider all submissions and hearings before the final Waste Management and Minimisation Plan is adopted in May/June 2012.

Movember 2011 drew to end on Wednesday this week after a bumper month of registrations and donations that made it the 2nd largest campaign in New Zealand, ever. Some 13,000 individuals registered at Movember.com this year, the largest number since 2007 and with donations still flooding in, the final sum raised is likely to also be close to a record. During Movember, men from all over the country transformed their top lips into walking billboards and Kiwi women have offered their support all in the name of raising vital funds and awareness for beneficiaries the Cancer Society and Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. Movember New Zealand Manager Rob Dunne is completely overwhelmed by the support that the Movember campaign has received this year. 2011 has been such a busy year and the fact that so many Mo Bros and Sistas still jump on the hairy Mo train is both motivating and humbling. There have been so many amazing characters and personal stories from Movember participants, through to the ambassadors, corporate partners and sponsors. I want to thank everyone that has been involved and helped generate awareness and funds for Mens health in New Zealand, he said. High profile Mo Bros or ambassadors such as legendary sports commentator John McBeth, Good Mornings Brendon Pongia, top Kiwi surfer Maz Quinn and league star Wairangi Koopu used their influence to push the message. One unique story of support was the efforts of Shane MacManaway CEO of Allflex, who threw his energy into getting New Zealands farmers onboard and even donated a share of profits from bovine ear-tags to Movember. The funds raised will be split evenly between Movembers NZ mens health partners; The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and the Cancer Society. Govt studying impact of phone towers on wildlife

New Delhi: The Indian Environment Ministry is examining a report by an expert committee that has studied the possible impacts of cell phone towers on wildlife including birds and bees, Minister Jayanthi Natarajan told the Lok Sabha on Monday. In a written reply to a question posed by lawmakers, Natarajan said that the Ministry had formed the expert committee on Aug 30 under the chairmanship of Dr Asad Rahmani, Director, Bombay Natural History Society. Media reports have said that the environment and forests' ministry study has blamed electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from communication towers for the declining numbers of sparrows and bees. The study titled 'A possible impact of communication tower on wildlife birds and bees' said the radiation decreases egg production in the bees. It also added that in the case of honey bees, the group observed that high radiation resulted in an unusual phenomenon known as 'colony collapse disorder' which is characterized by sudden disappearance of a hive's inhabitants, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers behind. The vanished bees were never found. Also, the navigational skills of the bees were affected by hightension lines.

26/11: India still waiting on Pakistan army rejects NATO's Pakistan for justice apologies
"I think the evidence provided by the ministry of home affairs would be sufficient for any normal civilian court to prosecute the people involved in the conspiracy and the perpetrators of this crime," he said. Meanwhile in Mumbai wreaths were placed at a police memorial and a minutes silence observed in memory of the 18 security personnel who were killed during the three-day ordeal. The siege, known in India as the 26/11 attacks, was carried out by terrorists from Pakistan who came by sea to strike the high profile targets this day in 2008. The siege of Mumbai continued for about 60 hours and after heavy gunbattle with the terrorists holed up in the hotels the fight ended in the death of nine of the ten gunmen who held India's financial capital hostage. Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab is the only among the ten gunmen who could be captured alive. He was awarded death sentence but India is yet to execute him as the legal process continued. Kasab admitted that the attackers were members of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit. The attack led to the severance of the peace talks and created tension between nuclear armed neighbours India and Pakistan for a long period though later dialogues resumed. India blamed Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) for training, equipping and financing the attack with support from elements in the Pakistan military, a charge that was later corroborated by co-conspirator David Headley. Indias Supreme Court has stayed the death sentence handed down to Kasab, pending an appeal hearing. Some of the key people involved in the conspiracy are undergoing trial in USA. David Coleman Headley, a Chicago-based Pakistani American, is one of them. His friend Tahawwur Hussain Rana is another Pakistani Canadian resident of Chicago who has been jailed in USA for plotting an attack on Danish newspaper JyllandsPosten, but was acquitted in the Mumbai attack there though he is a wanted in the Mumbai attack in India. Islamabad: In a strong message, the Pakistani army told North-Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) on Monday that they will not accept the latter's apologies over the attack made by them at a Pakistani checkpost on Saturday. North-Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) helicopters attacked a checkpost in Pakistan-Afghanistan border on Saturday killing 24 Pakistani soldiers. Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that the regrets and apologies made by NATO officials were not enough. NATO Secretary General offered their condolences in a statement on Sunday and mentioned the attack to be 'regrettable'. "I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the Pakistani officers and soldiers who lost their lives or were injured, and to the government and people of Pakistan, following the regrettable incident along the Afghan-Pakistani border," the statement said. "I have written to the Prime Minister of Pakistan to make it clear that the deaths of Pakistani personnel are as unacceptable and deplorable as the deaths of Afghan and international personnel," the statement added. "This was a tragic unintended incident. I fully support the ISAF investigation which is currently underway. We will determine what happened, and draw the right lessons." However the statement added that NATO would remain 'committed' to working with Pakistan and improving cooperation to avoid the recurrence of such tragic incidents. "We have a joint interest in the fight against cross-border terrorism and in ensuring that Afghanistan does not once again become a safe haven for terrorists. NATO and Pakistan share a common goal: a stable Afghanistan in a peaceful region," the statement mentioned. Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that Pakistan would not allow any body to attack the country, signalling a meltown in the already strained ties between two erstwhile allies. Pakistan took a strong move as a committee chaired by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani decided to cut supply lines to NATO forces in Afghanistan in response to the attack on Saturday, media reports said. The Pakistani administration also asked US to vacate an important air base in the country within 15 days, media reports said. "We will not allow to anybody to attack our country," Gilani said. The incident has been vehemently condemned from all corners of the country. On Sunday, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar called up US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and mentioned about the country' 'rage' on the entire incident. She said that this sort of an incident was completely 'unacceptable' as it violated and dishonored the sovereignty of the South Asian country, media reports said. At least 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed on Saturday morning as NATO helicopters struck on a Pakistani post near the Afghanistan border. Several others were injured in the attack that took place in the Salala checkpost at Mohmand. Around 40 Pakistani soldiers were stationed at the checkpost where the attack took place, as per reports. The political administration of Khyber Agency in Pakistan has stopped the supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan after the federations order, Geo News reported.

New Delhi: India told Pakistan on Saturday that it was still awaiting decisive action against the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, as the country observed the third anniversary of the strike that claimed 166 lives. In coordinated attacks the terrorists had targetted Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, luxury hotels like Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, the Nariman House Jewish community centre among other places. We are still waiting for Pakistan to act decisively to bring to justice the perpetrators of the mindless violence that was unleashed on Mumbai, Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna told reporters at news conference in New Delhi. We are still waiting...I once again call on our neighbour to bring the perpetrators of the crime to speedy justice", he said. India has long contended that Pakistans efforts to prosecute those behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks are eyewash, an allegation rejected by Islamabad that asserts that India is yet to provide credible evidence against the perpetrators. Pakistans interior minister Rehman Malik on Saturday said that

the country had taken action against Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed and others accused of involvement in the Mumbai attack on the basis of evidence provided by India. However, the suspects were released because the information given by New Delhi was "vague and insufficient", Malik claimed. Indias main opposition, the rightwing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) countered Pakistans allegation, saying that the country was sheltering the perpetrators. Pakistan is sheltering the terrorists. 26/11 perpetrators are walking free in Pakistan, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar was quoted as saying by a national news channel on Saturday. "We should have contested Rehman Maliks (Pakistan's Interior Minister) statement that there is no credible evidence in 26/11. The evidences given to Pakistan should be made open to world," he said. Krishna also dismissed Maliks claims saying that the evidence given by Indias home ministry to Pakistan in the Mumbai terror attack case was sufficient for "any normal court" to prosecute the accused.

The Pakistani administration also asked US to vacate an important air base in the country within 15 days

Diesel: When bad policy makes for toxic hell

By SuNIta NaraIN
New Delhi: Just consider. Every time petrol prices are raised, oil companies end up losing more money. Simply because the price differential between petrol and diesel increases further, and people gravitate towards diesel vehicles. More the use of diesel, more the oil companies bleed. Worse, we all bleed because diesel vehicles add to toxic pollution in our cities, which, in turn, adds to ill health and treatment costs. This is very well understood. Yet nobody will do anything to fix the trend. Today, it makes more sense for the next car buyer to buy an expensive personal carperhaps even a Mercedes-Benzbut run it on the subsidised diesel. Today, according to governments own estimates, the use of diesel in personal vehicles has zoomed. Some 15 per cent of the current consumption of diesel is in passenger cars. The agricultural sector uses less12 per cent of the countrys diesel. This busts the myth that diesel prices are kept low for reasons of public policy. In fact, keeping the price low but allowing its use in the private transport sector is clearly a deliberate policy to use the poor persons fuel to subsidise the rich. Oil companies also say that the under-recovery in diesel is now costing them big time. It is estimated that Rs 67,500 crore is lost annually in under-recovery on account of diesel alone. This is roughly 60 per cent of the total losses of the companies. Assuming that private cars consume 15 per cent of the diesel, the direct subsidy to car owners is over Rs 10,000 crore. This is socialism Indian style: taxing the poor to pay the rich. With each increase in the price of petrol, this gap widens. Bad for oil companies; worse for the environment. The claim of car companies that the modern diesel vehicle is clean is far from true. Emission data shows current diesel cars emit seven times more particulates and three to five times more nitrogen oxides than petrol cars. There is sufficient evidence that tiny particulatesPM 2.5emitted from a diesel vehicle are toxic and carcinogenic. This toxin is firmly associated with significant increase in cases of asthma, lung diseases, chronic bronchitis and heart ailments. Long-term exposure can cause lung cancer. The increased level of nitrogen dioxide contributes to the formation of ozone, which, in turn, damages our lungs. So be clear, diesel vehicles, however fancy and fitted, are costing us our health.

There is sufficient evidence that tiny particulates PM 2.5emitted from a diesel vehicle are toxic and carcinogenic. This toxin is firmly associated with significant increase in cases of asthma, lung diseases, chronic bronchitis and heart ailments.
Today, Europe, which promoted diesel vehicles, is paying a heavy cost. It is struggling to meet air quality standards, even though it has invested heavily in the cleanest of fuels reducing sulfur levels to near-zero and has fitted vehicles with every kind of anti-pollution gizmo like particulate traps and

de-NOx catalyst. Diesel also has higher levels of black carbon, which is today understood to be a key contributor to climate change. In the US, the car mecca, where emission standards and price do not differentiate between fuels, there is no market for diesel cars. So why does Indian policy continue to provide this perverse incentive to pollute? The irony is that there is no policy that allows this use. It is a loophole. Car manufacturers struck gold when they realised that they could sell more vehicles if they could run them on cheaper and subsidised fuel. They exploit the fact that diesel price is kept lower because of its use for transportation of essential goods and for public transporttrucks use some 37 per cent of the diesel consumed and buses 12 per cent. They also know that dual pricing of fueldifferent diesel prices for cars and buses or tractorscannot be operated. They merrily exploit this helplessness. Government agencies know this. They make all the right noises about the need to fix the price distortion. The market types glibly talk about the need to deregulate diesel. They say this because they know that even

though they sit in power, they cannot remove government control over the price of this fuel, which is also essential for railways, transport of public goods and agriculture. They know that the inflationary impact of raising diesel price will be high; they know it will be opposed. But they use this convenient cover to do nothing about the most glaring of distortionsthe use of the subsidised fuel by the rich and for private transport. But given the rising economic cost and pollution, the option of doing nothing is not acceptable anymore. The options are either to link the price with emission standards or to ban production of personal diesel vehicles. If this is not possible, then the government should tax diesel vehicles200 to 300 per cent of the price of the vehicleto remove the fiscal distortion in price and policy. Our neighbour Sri Lanka has done so. In India, committee after committee has recommended that this be done. But it is not done. Clearly, the lobby for big diesel is powerful. Clearly, it sits in glitzy chambers of commerce, which can bend policy to suit purse and purpose. Its sad and deadly.

We will trample Case registered; Bedi opposition in polls: Maya claims 'sound evidence'
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday said her party would trample all rival forces in the polls while calling Congress so weak in the state that the Prince of the party (Rahul Gandhi) was rushing here repeatedly to enact "drama" leaving behind the crisis in New Delhi. After the war or words and a Rahul Gandhi roadshow, it was time for Mayawati to flex her muscle and she did with a massive rally at the Ramabai Ambedkar ground here to counter the Congress poster boy. She said the symbols like hand (Congress), flower (BJP) and cycle (Samajwadi Party) would fall flat on their face in the elections as elephant (the symbol of her party BSP) will trample them all raising a dust storm. Mayawati said Congress is spreading misinformation and by raising charges of corruption in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme they are acting as if it is the scheme of the Congress itself. She said Congress is trying to divide the people in UP. Crowds had gathered in large number to attend Mayawati's rally for the Dalit in the state capital Lucknow on Sunday. Dalit who constitute 21 percent of the electorate are considered the largest vote bank of Maya and she countered the Rahul effect on Sunday with high decibel speeches. Earlier on Saturday, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said Uttar Pradesh would be brought back to the path of development in the next five years if his party was voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections. The Gandhi scion said he is ready to sign a statement with the comments he made regarding development of the North Indian state. "If Congress comes to power, in the next five years, Uttar Pradesh will be brought back to the path of development. In the next ten years the state will transform in such a huge way that even the people of the state will not be able to recognize it," he said while addressing a gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district on Saturday. Mayawati and her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had snubbed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector issue. "His upbringing, education has been done in foreign, so his lifestyle and thoughts are like foreigners. When he visits Uttar Pradesh he often comes with foreigner friends. During his visit, he shows his foreigner friends the slums and poverty and make a joke of it," she said. The exchange of heated comments between Mayawati and Rahul Gandhi has become quite common in recent times with Uttar Pradesh going for the assembly elections in 2012. New Delhi: The Delhi Police have registered a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy against Kiran Bedi, while the former IPS officer and social activist claimed she has 'sound evidence' and will come out clean. The Delhi Police registered the case under cheating and criminal conspiracy sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after a local court on Saturday ordered them to file an FIR against her within 24 hours. "Having been a cop I have sound evidence and endurance to deal with this FIR. Time will tell," Bedi tweeted on Sunday. Kiran Bedi, one of the key Team Anna members, has been accused of cheating and misappropriating funds in collusion with foreign companies and other foundation. Based on a complaint filed by lawyer Devinder Singh Chauhan, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Bansal directed the crime branch of Delhi Police to register the case against Bedi. Chauhan has alleged that Bedi received donation of over Rs 50 lakh from American multinational company Microsoft Corporation to impart free computer training to families of personnel of Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), IndoTibetan Border Police (ITBP) and other state police organizations under her trust India

Vision Foundations Meri Police initiative. Instead of imparting free training or distributing free computers, Kiran Bedi in collusion with some unknown persons cheated Vedanta Foundation and made a plan to cheat the kids of cops and various paramilitary forces and civil polices and for the purpose Kiran Bedi planned to collect Rs 20,000 per month per training centre, Chauhans complaint read. For the purpose of siphoning money for herself, Kiran Bedi entered into a donation agreement with Vedanta according to which Rs 6,000 out of the total money of Rs 20,000 was to be paid by Vedanta to her two trusts (India Vision Foundation and Navjyoti Foundation) on the false ground that Kiran Bedi had arranged for the land and electricity for the said centre (training centre) for running their activities, said the complainant. Reacting to the court order, Bedi tweeted: I am informed an FIR is registered against me. For me now nothing is a surprise! It only strengthens my resolve to do more. Earlier, Bedi was caught in a travel bill controversy for reportedly travelling economy class while claiming the charges of business class on a flight. Bedi on Oct 24 said she would return the excess airfare, which was paid to her by her sponsors and had been used by her to fund a charity organisation.

deposit, cash withdrawal, send money and balance enquiry. Speaking on the initiative, Rahul Bhagat, Country Head - Retail Liabilities, Marketing & Direct Banking Channels, HDFC Bank, said, There are 600,000 habitations but only about 89,000 bank branches in the country, making access to banking services difficult in remote areas. "With HDFC Bank MobileBank Account using Vodafone m-paisa, anyone can open a savings account and transact at a HDFC Bankappointed outlet convenient to them, with the same sense of trust and security as if they were in a bank branch. "HDFC Bank has a Board-approved plan to bring 10 million families under financial inclusion over a five-year period and we see this initiative in partnership with Vodafone India, helping us achieve that objective. Sunil Sood, Director - Business Operations (West & South), Vodafone India, said, It is a pioneering initiative modeled on the lines of Vodafones m-pesa product running in three different countries of Africa, offering more than 17 million people, basic financial services beyond the reach of traditional banking."

Anna Hazare threatens protest on Dec 11

New Delhi: Gandhian social activist Anna Hazare on Monday threatened that if the Parliamentary Standing Committee's proposals on the Lokpal Bill did not satisfy him then he would go on a severe 'dharna' (demonstration) at the national capital from Dec 11. Anna said that he would go for a day-long protest at the Jantar Mantar if the committee did not prepare a strong bill.

He also urged his followers and common man to join the 'dharna' on Dec 11. The Parliamentary panel on Lokpal Bill is scheduled to submit its report before Dec 7. In August, Anna observed a 12- day fast for Jan Lokpal Bill at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi. He broke his fast only after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave assurance to pass the bill in the winter session of the Parliament.

Kishenji death body blow to Naxals India, China abort talks

ajaI SahNI aND FakIr MohaN PraDhaN
The early triumphalism in sections of the media after the first news of the killing of Maoist Politburo member Mallojula Koteswara Rao alias Kishanji in Burishole forest in West Midnapore District, West Bengal, during an operation on November 24, 2011, was quickly tempered by statements from Security Forces (SF) leaders that this incident was unlikely to alter the course of the Maoist movement in the region and across wider theatres in the country. It is, nevertheless, a tremendous achievement for counter-insurgency (CI) Forces in the protracted war against what Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described as the single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country. The killing compounds the impact of a continuous succession of intelligence-based operations that has progressively decimated the top Maoist leadership over the past years in a silent war of attrition that has far greater significance than the noisy shuffling about of massive and coordinated Forces and the flashy clear, hold and develop non-strategy that has been projected as the principal state response in the recent past. Indeed, with Kishanjis killing, the 2007 Politburo of the Communist Party of India Maoist (CPIMaoist) has been brought down from its original strength of 16 to just seven members operating in freedom. Of equal significance is the fact that the 39 member Central Committee (CC) of 2007 has now been reduced to just 21 members, depleting the resources from which the national level leadership can be drawn. This process has penetrated deep into regional, state and district level leadership structures, forcing the Maoists into a dramatic contraction of their strategic overreach to extend the peoples war throughout the country, and this is reflected in current Government estimates that suggest that the 223 Districts variously affected by Maoist activities in 2008 have now reduced to just 180 such Districts. Maoist violence has also diminished dramatically, as the rebels focus urgently on consolidation, recruitment, training and a deepening of influence and infrastructure in their areas of dominance, instead of spreading themselves thin across territories where the revolutionary situation is relatively inhospitable, or wasting themselves in unproductive operations against state Forces. The most significant CI successes have been secured in sustained, cross-State intelligence-led operations, specifically targeting leadership figures, not in blind area domination exercises. Indeed, despite the suspension of operations in West Bengal immediately after Banerjee assumed power, it is clear that SFs continued to intensively and aggressively gather intelligence on Kishenji in full knowledge that the ceasefire with the Maoists would, eventually, prove untenable. Senior Police officials attributed this operational success entirely on human intelligence, with Andhra Pradesh intelligence which has been responsible for a overwhelming proportion of operational successes against the Maoist leadership across the country claiming that the troops in the Burishole Forest were acting on a tip-off from within, and that Kishanji had been set-up. Kishanji had been on the run almost continuously since March 29, 2010, when he escaped narrowly after being wounded in a gun battle with SFs in the Lakhanpur Forest in the West Midnapore District of West Bengal, and, despite his high profile projections of the preceding year, had become inaccessible to the media and public since this date. Intelligence agencies and the SFs had, however, stuck close to his heels since, with at least two close escapes in the intervening months, culminating in the fatal encounter on November 24. Despite their cumulative losses, and the shock of Kishanjis death, the Maoists can be expected to strike back soon enough, and there will be a parallel escalation of their operations, particularly against SFs and TMC cadres in West Bengal, but also across a much wider theatre. The CC has already called for a protest week commencing Tuesday, November 29, and a two-day Bharat Bandh (all-India shutdown) on December 4 and 5, 2011, to protest Kishanjis killing. Past trends suggest that these protests will be marked by significant acts of violence as well. The Peoples Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) week, celebrated each year between December 2 and 8, may also witness efforts to orchestrate acts of dramatic violence. This stage will see inevitable operational reverses for the SFs as well, even as successes may well be registered. Some of these reverses could be dramatic and severely demoralizing. Any ambivalence on the part of the State at this stage, any dilution of the operational focus or of the political will, would only plunge West Bengal deeper into another bloodbath. It remains to be seen whether Chief Minister Banerjee has the vision and the will to see the present confrontation through to its logical end, or whether she relapses into the uncertainty and paralysis that has come to grip other political leaders confronted with the challenge of a sustained Maoist onslaught. after Dalai Lama row

New Delhi: Talks between India and China over border disputes were called off after Beijing raised objections to a scheduled address by the Dalai Lama at a world Buddhist congregation in New Delhi, media reports said on Saturday. According to reports, Beijing has expressed concerns that the four-day congregation, that is being supported by Indias foreign ministry and is expected to be attended by over 900 delegates from 46 countries, could be used for political activities. However, there was no official word on the reason for the postponement of the 15th round of talks between Special Representatives of both the side, scheduled for November 28-29. In a brief statement, Indias Ministry of External Affairs said, We are looking forward to the 15th round of SRs talks in the near future and

the two sides remain in touch to find convenient dates for the meeting. W h i l e India maintains that the Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader and honoured guest, according to official policy the government says that the soil of India will not be allowed for antiChina political activities. However, China holds Dalai Lama as a separatist even though the Tibetan spiritual leader officially does not Tibetan independence movement. Having advocated the movement from 1961 to the late 1970s, he proposed a sort of high-level autonomy in a speech in Strasbourg in 1988, and has since restricted his proposals to the Tibetan Autonomous Region within China.

Elections: Why Labour? Why National?
These guys are only power hungry megalomaniacs out to use the voters, no real difference between any of these NZ parties. Grant Labour knows only how to spend not how to earn, they presided over 9 years of boom and still didnt encourage people to work, showed solo mums and other beneficiaries how to live off the taxpayer, thereby encouraged child abuse. Now in a global financial crises blaming National for the job losses, when there was a boom why did they tax middle class New Zealanders on 60k at a whopping 39% to help pay for their beneficiary vote banks? Had everybody worked in businesses, not in the bloated public sector we would have savings. Manish Raney National: If u want workers to be underpaid and live a pathetic life. Ann Smith Labour was encouraging candidates from India who got caught in election fraud in Auckland tells why people did not vote for Labour. What happened to those guys though, did they manage to pay off to go scotfree? Abdulla

Labour will have to do a Peters

This election has further exposed the deep cracks in the Labour Party. Throughout the past three years since its deft and experienced captain left it unceremoniously, it has been meandering in choppy waters like a rudderless ship, with tattered sails, hopelessly divided shipmates and no steady, credible hand at the helm to navigate the stormy seas. After last months elections, the Labour vessel has taken in even more water, registering its lowest over vote in history. Its senior leadership is now scrambling to gain control of the helm of a vessel that is listing dangerously. By all portents, it looks as if it is set for a further three years of turbulent sailing unless its new leader does nothing short of the remarkable. One would have thought the party would have done some serious soul searching after the 2008 election. It obviously didnt and is facing the consequences. The contenders for its leadership are all talking about rejigging the partys appeal to make it look like a 21st century entity, to rebrand and reinvent itself to attract young New Zealanders and so on. But it just so happens that the men who are saying this belong to the jaded, old guard mind set. The new leader of the party would have to show exemplary vision and creativity. One of the biggest challenges it faces is that the Green Party is already dangerously encroaching on its left of centre mind space. It is believed, with considerable justification, that thinking, younger voters abandoned Labour in droves in favour of the smarter, far more coherent and intelligent-sounding Greens. The Greens have now emerged as a credible medium sized party, aggressively snapping at Labours share of votes. If it continues at this pace, which indications are it very well will, it will prove even more dangerous for Labour come 2014. Labour stands to lose even more of its well-educated constituents. Labour, therefore, has not only the National Party to counter in the next elections the Greens are an even bigger threat. Whats more, the Greens are on a roll, being the first minor party to garner more than 10 per cent of the vote in a New Zealand MMP election. Contrasting with the Labour leaderships brusqueness, seeming unwillingness to listen and come up with unintelligent, alarmist and unconvincing messages, the Greens have shown an uncanny capability to manage contradictions in the interests of the country. The success of the healthy homes insulation policy it put together with National is a case in point. Labour has never demonstrated that spirit of cooperation in the larger interest. Labours new leadership has a lot to learn from the young and intelligent twin leadership of the Green Party and their refreshing green tinged approach to almost everything they do. The new leader will have to come across as being more conciliatory than combative, a listener more than someone who is keen to talk down to and one who is respectful rather than someone who simply sniggers at a disagreeable point of view. As part of its soul searching, Labour needs to overhaul the party through and through. It must weed out the deadwood and bring in inspired fresh blood by appealing to that very segment that is currently swayed by the occupy movements anti-establishment fervour. But most of all, it must put all its strength behind a single leader and not send signals out every so often making the world wonder when he or she is going to be rolled as was the case over the past three years. For, if the party itself shows little confidence in its leader, it simply cannot expect its supporters to do otherwise. Just as it must analyse the reasons for the rise and rise of the Green Party, the Labour Party can possibly take a leaf out of the book of someone who has mastered the art and science of rising from the grave Winston Peters. . - Dev Nadkarni

Why is India vegetarian friendly

Billion rupee question: I am born vegetarian, and am still so. But, I find my peculiar dietary requirements proving to be a problem on more than one occasion. (In KL air port our family had to eat potato chips and peanuts for dinner, fed up looking for veg food) I feel India is able to feed many hungry mouths, because of varied diet that different regions follow. One thing is for sure, I love vegetarian food and I am not going to change my habit. Ravi

Five reasons why National won and Labour lost

Dev NaDkarNI
leaDership anD leaDers charisma National had a clear advantage over Labour on this point. The partys campaign was built around the leader, John Key, who has consistently been voted the most popular Prime Minister of all time. His face appeared in all party promotions and there was no ambiguity about who the leader was. He also had the advantage of the incumbency factor, having been the most recent Prime Minister. Labour never quite got its leadership act together. Following its defeat in 2008, Helen Clarks handover of her leadership and exit were hasty and poorly handled in the media. It was as if Phil Goff became the leader purely by default. The party leadership remained invisible for much of the past three years. It is only in the run up to the election that Goff came into himself, though he seemed to be alone not supported by too many from his own party. He rarely appeared in the partys visual promotions. Despite 30 years in parliament he needed media training. While it did help project him better, it was a case of too little too late. The Labour Party risks repeating the same mistake in handling its leadership changeover this time as well. the incumbencY factor New Zealanders rarely boot out a party after only one three-year term. Two terms is generally the norm. National had the advantage of being in power for only the past three years. The leaders popularity

was an added bonus. The country has rarely been faced with as many challenges, all coming together, as it has in the past three years (global financial crisis, Christchurch earthquakes, Pike River disaster) and the general perception has been that the Key government has handled the situation well. The mood was to obviously give it a proper chance this time around. Labours parliamentary performance has been lacklustre and it has hardly done anything against the last Key governments policies to fire the imagination of the people. It did little to quell the growing perception of contradictions within its own rank and file. It had three years to reorganise and rebuild, bring in new blood, weed out the deadwood and present a rejigged Labour Party for the 21st century which it failed to do and its senior leaders, fiercely competing for the top job after Goff steps down next week, are doing so so only now.

In the final days, Labour showed its extreme desperation by plain and simple scaremongering. It dropped leaflets to expectant mothers that under National they would not live to see their childs first birthday.
was not afraid to talk about rationalising the welfare system. In short, it was prepared to do everything it could to reduce the debt mountain. Labours plan was the opposite borrow more in the short term. It did not seem that the economy was seriously on its agenda. It dwelled on more populist measures the kind of things some political parties do ahead of elections in India. Instead of explaining its own plans and selling them to the people, the party spent all its time and energy in opposing Nationals mixed ownership

model for SOEs. It failed to come up with anything substantial in a positive way its focus was largely negative, criticising Nationals manifesto, especially toward the end of the campaign. It failed to capitalise on its early, successful attentioncatching ideas like increasing the superannuation age to 67 and introducing a capital gains tax. the campaiGn National leveraged its leadership charisma, incumbency factor and the wide perception among people that it was somehow better qualified and equipped to deal with the economy to deliver its messages effectively. The fact that it was unafraid to talk of changes to the ownership of SOEs, the welfare system and several other potentially unpopular measures showed strength and resolve, which people obviously bought by the bushel, going by the election results. National came across as the more informed party with a better grip on what is happening and what needs to be done in all the leadership debates than Labour. Labours campaign was fuzzy from the start. Its economic proposals did not seem rooted in reality something exemplified by its leaders inability to come up with a credible reply to the famous question popped to him by his rival, Show me the money, during a debate. In the final days, Labour showed its extreme desperation by plain and simple scaremongering. It dropped leaflets to expectant mothers that under National they would not live to see their childs first birthday. No matter how loyal one may be to

Labour, one cant escape the insult to ones common sense and intelligence that such tactics deliver. That last campaign signaled that the party had lost all hope and was going for broke.

proGrammes anD manifestoes National clearly projected its priority: the economy. It was not afraid to present tough options to the people political parties rarely do that before an election. It talked about a sell down of the governments minority stake in state owned enterprises a veritable holy cow in New Zealand. Some 78% of the people were said to be against it. Yet, many of them voted National in. National also talked of less government, potentially meaning culling of public sector jobs another highly popular measure before an election. It also

votinG patterns anD turnout The quirks of the MMP system made everybody in the Epsom constituency vote tactically. Determined not to let ACT win, Labour supporters voted for National and Nationals voted for ACT. But National voters heeded the advice following the notorious teacup incident and voted ACT in droves to ensure support for National in parliament. Labours ploy to keep ACT out added to its long list of failures. Undoubtedly, Labour lost its vote in great numbers to the Green Party, which has come into itself in this election it is no longer a small party but a medium one and ominously snapping at Labours heels. If it keeps the momentum, as it is likely to do under its intelligent and smart dual leadership, it will be a serious magnet for younger, well-informed Labour voters. The turnout in last months election was the lowest ever in New Zealand. It is suspected that significant numbers of traditional Labour supporters did what they did in 2008 simply stayed away. Both parties had little to inspire youngsters to vote. Add to that the anti-establishment fervour stoked by the worldwide occupy movement and you have what happened on polling day masses of youngsters stayed away, many despite having registered.

Elections in NZ hardly as colourful as in India and Fiji

PaDMINI GauNDer
Elections have come and gone and I found it all so boring. There was nothing that made it memorable. It was so unlike an election in India, or even Fiji. I remember when my daughters were young, once when we went to India, we were in Kerala, the most volatile state perhaps and politics is in the blood of the people there. It was not election time but there was some protest as it is usual there and a group went by marching with placards and slogans. My daughters ran out to watch in excitement as it was all new to them. People in Kerala would go to the tea shop every morning, not just for tea, but for the latest news. One person would have the morning paper and there would be a group around him listening to him as he reads. A discussion of the main political developments would follow. When I went to Fiji in 1966 I found a similar interest in politics among the Indians there. Self government had just started and colonial rule was coming to an end. The Fijians were given the franchise only in the 1960s and they were not much interested in politics as the chiefly system was still very strong. But with the Indians it was a different matter. And interestingly, some of the leading Indian politicians have been descendants of the few people who came from Kerala during the indenture. First of all there was James Anthony, who with Apisai Tora agitated for the workers rights in the early 1960s and the colonial government saw his potential (for causing trouble and going ahead in studies) and sent him off to the East-West Center in Hawaii for further study. He eventually settled down in Hawaii and we did not hear much about him till the 1980s. Then there was Siddiq Koya whose father, Moideen Koya, had gone back to Kerala and settled down there before I came to Fiji. But I used to hear many stories about him, some of them quite horrifying. Moideen Koya used to come back to Fiji from Kerala often and visit his children who were all doing well. Siddiq Koya became the leader of the opposition and his brother, Abbas Koya, became a magistrate. In the early 1970s once when Moideen Koya visited Fiji I saw him. He was walking ahead of us near Churchill Park in Lautoka and I wondered who he was because he was wearing a lungi. My husband told me who he was and wanted to take me to him and introduce me! He thought I would be interested as he spoke Malayalam. But I was somehow not interested after the horror stories I had heard about him. After independence we had more politicians who could trace their roots to Kerala. Mahen Chaudhry was the most well known. Though his father was north Indian his mother was a Malayali. Before him there was James Raman. And now there is Felix Anthony. None of them, however, was as incisive as Koya. Sometimes Koya might have been unfair in using the parliamentary privilege to launch an attack on a person outside parliament, but there was hardly a dull moment. It was not only Koya who made politics in Fiji interesting. There were others who made it memorable without the controversy that Koya often managed to cause. In 1972 Fiji had its first general elections after independence and I remember a radio debate (there was no television then in Fiji) between Karam Ramrakha, a prominent member of the National Federation Party, and an Indian minister in the Alliance government, Vijay Singh (later Sir Vijay Singh). The chairman conducting the interview was a European. After almost 40 years I still remember some of the things that were said because it was all so interesting (though we could not see the people involved as it was only a radio interview). At one stage Vijay Singh said, If only Mr. Ramrakha would be honest. Ramrakha at once interrupted and said to the chairman: Sir, he is calling me a liar. Before the chairman could say anything, Vijay Singh said- No, no, no, no, no I said if only Mr. Ramrakha would be honest. By that I was referring to the future, I meant if only he would be honest in the future. I was paying a premium on his future honesty, as it were! When John Key accused Phil Goff of calling him a liar I was reminded of this incident long ago. But I am sure I will forget what John Key and Phil Goff said in a few days time (though it was a television debate and we could see it) because there was no force in what was being said. Phil Goff reminds me of Brutus in Julius Caesar. Brutus loved Rome and wanted to save her from dictatorship. Similarly, Phil Goff loves New Zealand and wants to make sure that her assets are not sold to foreigners, which could eventually lead to foreign control of the country, but his message does not get through to the voters because he is not forceful enough. Here he is a contrast to someone like Winston Peters who is assertive and forceful. That is where Phil Goff has failed. And the elections which have come and gone will be forgotten before the year is out. The most memorable thing in this election perhaps was that cup of tea John Key had with John Banks in Newmarket!

Impetus for import substitution in Budget

The Fiji government continues to push for import substitution in the 2012 National Budget through the various allocations to primary industries in Fiji. Government has continued to give a helping hand to locally producers by not only providing vital financial assistance but by increasing duties on certain imported items. Under agriculture, the demand driven approach programme (DDA) looks at promoting exports and reducing imports in the supply of local vegetables, dairy, beef and root crops. In terms of food security and non-reliance on overseas producers, the government has allocated the following: Export promotion programme $1m Food Security Programme $1m Rural and Outer Island Development Programme (ROI) $1.75m Cocoa Revitalisation $200,000 Rice Revitalisation $600,000 Cottage Industry $100,000 Livestock Rehabilitation $1.5m Dairy Development Programme $2m Many imported products have seen an increase in fiscal duty to give local products an edge and allow local producers to develop their businesses. At the same time, the increase is also due to the adverse effect of the product on peoples health. The products falling in this category include canned fish, electrical mounting blocks, exercise books (imported), imported cigarettes and alcohol, blank DVDs and CDs, palm oil and monosodium glutamate (MSG). To add to the benefits, fiscal duty on machinery used in the manufacturing of goods has been brought down to zero, road tractors reduced to 5 percent from 32 percent excluding agricultural tractors which has zero fiscal duty, chicken mesh, hexagonal wire netting reduced to 5 per cent from 32 per cent. For outer islands and the Northern division another concession provided is reduction in fiscal duty to zero for raw materials to manufacturers outside Viti Levu. At the budget announcement last week, government highlighted the need to have fiscal duties for sporting and musical equipment at a zero percent to encourage healthy living and enhance talent capacity in the country.

Brash Meets Senior Fijian Diplomat

ACT Party Leader Don Brash met with Fiji High Commission Acting Head of Mission Mere Tora informally after being invited to share ideas on the future of Fiji/New Zealand relations recently. Dr Brash said that while it was a private meeting, there had been media enquiries and he wished to clarify that it was unofficial. However, he did confirm that both parties agreed it was in both countries interests that New Zealand re-engages with Fiji. In 2014 Fiji will be holding its first ever non-racially segregated election which is a huge milestone for a country that has endured four military coups since 1987 as a result of an ethnically divisive democracy. Fijis new constitution will enshrine a colour-blind democracy that Fijians of all ethnicities, both in Fiji and New Zealand, are widely in favour of. I am 100 percent in favour of democracy that does not discriminate by race, so I am encouraged to hear that these positive steps are being taken in Fiji. Of course I do not endorse military dictatorships, but our current policy on non-engagement is driving Fiji away from its traditional allies. New Zealand and Fiji have been friends for a very long time. Our soldiers have fought side-by-side, our rugby players have played together and competed against each other, and we have been tourists in each others countries. Many New Zealanders were born in Fiji. A strong ACT Party in the next Parliament will be a vocal advocate for renewed engagement with Fiji in the interests of both Fiji and New Zealand, Dr Brash said.

E ticket card easier than ATM

The Ministry of Transport today responded to concerns by those confused on the new e-ticket bus cards and assuring the public the card is simple to use. Acting Director Sainiana Radrodro, who assured of an extensive and continuous public relations exercise to sensitise the public on the e-ticket system, said the card would be simpler to use than an ATM card. Before we embark with the rest of the population, there is going to be extensive and continuous public relations exercise carried out in the various villages, settlements, and communities to ensure that everyone is bought up to speed on how to use the card, she said. The system has already been launched as a pilot program and is

In a historic development, USP and Japan through the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and JICA and USPNEThad a live interaction with the Japanese astronaut, Dr. Satoshi Furukawa from 4.50-5.10am today 14th October 2011 at the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre. Students from Suva Sangam School, where there is a Japanese volunteer, and from USP had an interesting 30 minute question and answer session with Dr. Furukawa. Students asked many interesting questions to which Dr. Furukawa responded fully and clearly. JICA and JAXA officials were also part of the event that included media personnel from Japan and Fiji. Live interaction with the International Space Station showed how cutting edge facilities of the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre and USPNET can reach out even to outer-space. Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor of USP, said that this once-in-a-lifetime event to see and interact with Dr. Furukawa at the

ISS was a fitting demonstration of the capabilities of USPNET and its partnerships with Japan. This is also a proud moment for Fiji as Fiji is the first country selected by JICA for interaction with the International Space Station. This showcases the benefits of networking and partnership, and the depth of the USP-Japan partnership. The students of Suva Sangam College and USP were clearly very inspired by their interaction with Dr. Furukawa. The Chief Representative of JICA in Fiji, Mr. Juichiro Sasaki, emphasized the importance of setting high goals, and broadening horizons. He indicated that innovations can only occur by aiming high. Mr. Sasaki also spoke of the large investment of F$80 million in the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre and his hope that the Centre will serve the region well.

into its second week of implementation. Mrs Radrodro said there are a few minor hiccups but they are being taken care of. She said the public cannot avoid the use of cards because even the Ministry of Social Welfare makes welfare payments directly to banks so people have to get use to it. The feedback we have got from the children is that they are excited about the use of the cards. Adi Cakobau School is currently the only school using the system. She said they will be raising awareness and ironing out the problems before the system is launched to the general public. This one is just tap in and tap out. Boosting further confidence in the economy, the Reserve Bank of Fiji today announced that it has further relaxed exchange controls. The banks Governor Barry Whiteside highlighted at the post-budget press confer-

ence that the increased delegated limits means thats there is confidence about the outlook on the level of foreign reserves, which is currently around $1.5 billion. The measures announced would result in improved efficiency for businesses as they will no longer be required to lodge their applications with the RBF, he said. He said apart from increased delegated limits on a range of transactions, the RBF has also allowed commercial banks to write more forward contracts for importers as well as reintroduce offshore investments for individuals up to $10,000 per family per annum. When pressed on his thoughts on todays budget address, Governor Whiteside said that the budget presents an opportunity for the private sector to grow and inject revenue into the economy. The Prime Minister also confirmed today that the Reserve Bank has approved the license application for a European bank to establish operations in the country. Mr Whiteside, while not revealing the details of the bank, said that they are finalising other details before the bank commences operation.

Ministry clarifies on adoption cases

In response to claims by individuals on extortion and illegal adopting including family adoptions, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation has advised that under the Adoption of Infants Act, the adoption of children is the legal responsibility of the ministry. Ministry permanent secretary Mr Govind Sami explained that there are various processes including legal requirements that adoptive parents or guardians need to adhere to. All application for Adoption must be filed in the Family Court, whereby the Court then directs the Department to provide the Court with the Guardian- atLitem (GAL), which would include assessment of family income, number of children in the household, adoptive applicants background, and the familys ability to provide care and stability for the child. of the State the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation wishes to advise that all adoptive parents and foster care parents will need to fill in the appropriate forms and be assessed by the Adoption Panel, which will assess and identify their suitability as adoptive parents before any placements are done. The interests of the child will be paramount, Mr Sami said. He said the assessments again will include findings about the number of children in the family, family income, background report on adoptive parents and police clearance. On the Inter-Country Adoption, Mr Sami said this will only be possible after the signing of the Hague Convention, which will ensure that the rights of the child are protected in the new domain. For any assistance, individuals should liaise with the Child Services Division of the Ministry, Mr Sami added.

"The Fijian Government and the private sector work together in the quest for opportunities to broaden the export market including our niche products, which take advantage of our pristine environment," he said. Reiterating Government incentives for the resource based sector and exporters such as tax breaks, zero rated tarrifs and accelerated depreciation, the Prime Minister added that these incentives will allow Fijian companies to better compete at the regional and global levels. "Our focus is to grow the economy and create jobs," he said. This year's TFL Prime Minister's Exporter of the Year Award saw 19 awards awarded to Fiji's

Ancient Indians were masters of several sciences

GovINDa ChaItaNya

It is only in recent years that the western world has begun to acknowledge the great strides ancient Indians had taken in several branches of mathematics and science. Indians are increasingly being credited with discoveries in astronomy, geometry, algebra, chemistry and even atomic theory long before western scientists discovered them. Here we look briefly at Mathematics, mettalurgy, chemistry and atomic theories of the ancient Indians
knowledge ether as an element, but instead, had life, joy and sorrow, which were thought of as being material in nature. That made seven elements. All elements other than ether were believed to be atomic. Jaina systems believed that all atoms (Anu) were identical, and that differences of the character of the elements were due to the manner in which they were arranged and combined. Most schools of thought maintained that there were as many types of atoms as there were elements. Buddhist ideas of atomism, quite incredibly, like modern theories of quantum physics. For instance, some Buddhists conceived of the atom as not only the minutest object capable of occupying space, but also as occupying the tiniest conceivable duration of time, coming into being and vanishing almost in an instant, only to be succeeded by another atom, its character from the predominance of a given element. This hypothesis accounted for the fact that matter might show characteristics of more than one element. The molecules were formed by virtue of the atoms of water in each, with water working as the adhesive. Based purely on intuition and the logic developed in ancient times, these theories had no experimental basis. Also, they were not universally accepted. Shankaracharya argued strongly against the existence of atoms. In any case, these theories are brilliant imaginative expositions on the physical structure of the world and are testimony to the intellect and imagination of early Indian thinkers. Whether or not it is pure coincidence that they agree in part with the theories of modern physics has been the subject of much speculation and a number of scholarly books. Ancient Indian atomic theory was had little or no Greek influence. An atomic theory was taught by Pakudha Katyayana, an older contemporary of the Buddha, and was therefore earlier than that of Democritus. Without knowledge of gravity ancient Indian scientific theory remained in a rudimentary state, not unlike all the physical systems of the ancient world.

Mathematics
The world undoubtedly owes a lot to India in the field of mathematics, which sprouted in antiquity but flowered in the Gupta times to a stage more advanced than that reached by any other ancient nation. In Vedic times, it was the necessity of accurately laying out the site of a sacrifice that resulted in a simple geometric system. Ancient Indians evidently had a clear conception of abstract number, as distinct from numerical quantity of objects or spatial extension. While Greek mathematical science was largely based on mensuration and geometry, Indian mathematicians went beyond these conceptions. With the help of a simple numeral notation, they came up with a basic form of algebra, which enabled more complex calculations than were possible to the Greeks. In early inscriptions, dates and numerals are written in styles similar to those of the Romans, Greeks and Hebrews, with different symbols for the tens and hundreds. The earliest inscription recording the date by a system of nine digits and a zero, with place notation for the tens and hundreds, comes from what is now Gujarat, dated 595 CE. In any case, by this time, this new system had been introduced in Syria, and was probably in use in Indo-China. Brahmagupta, Mahavira and Bhaskara, medieval mathematicians, made many discoveries, which in Europe were not known until the Renaissance or later. They understood positive and negative quantities, developed systems of extracting square and cube roots, and could solve quadratic and some types of indeterminate equations. Progress was also made in trigonometry, spherical geometry and

calculus, chiefly in connection with astronomy. The mathematical implications of zero (shunya) and infinity, never more than vaguely realized by classical authorities, were fully understood in medieval India. Earlier mathematicians had taught that x/o=x, but Bhaskara proved that it was infinity.

Metallurgy & Chemistry

The Iron Pillar of Delhi is proof enough that early Indian metallurgists had gained great proficiency in the extraction of metal and its casting. Their products were known and valued in the Roman world and in the Arab domain. Their knowledge, however, appears to have been only practical, not having led to a highly developed science of metallurgy. Chemistry was developed not so much for use in any technology as it was to assist medicine. Though early Indian chemists showed no interest in turning metal into gold when there were attempts by alchemists at this across the world, they seemed more intent in discovering newer chemicals for making medicines. They attempted to fabricate drugs to promote longevity, aphrodisiacs, poisons, and their antidotes. These medical chemists formulated many important alkalis, acids and metallic salts by simple processes of calcinations and distillation. The liquid metal mercury fascinated Indian chemists of the middle Ages, like those in China, the Islamic world and Europe. They experimented with it and believed that it was the panacea for all diseases and a source of perpetual youth. This unfortunate preoccupation with the shiny metal seemed to have led ancient chemistry astray.

Atomic theory
Ancient atomic theory, like physics, was inextricably linked with religious and theological ideas besides philosophy, varying a little from sect to sect. The material universe was differentiated by elements. All schools identified four --earth, air, fire and water. To these Hindus and Jainas added a fifth, Akasha, generally translated ether. This made up the Panchamahabhuta or five super elements. It was recognised that air was not of infinite extension, and it was Akasha that occupied empty space. The five elements were linked to sense impressions -earth to smell, air to feeling, fire to vision, water to taste, and ether to sound. Buddhists and Ajivikas did not ac-

caused by the first. The Vaisheshika system said that the single atom is a mere point in space, totally without magnitude. The atom was acknowledged as being invisible. It had no qualities, only potentialities, coming into play when the atom combined with others. This school, which specially devoted itself to atomic doctrine maintained that, before combining to form material objects, atoms made primary combinations of diads and triads. Buddhists and Ajivikas developed the idea of molecules as clusters of atoms, a little differently. According to them, in normal conditions no atoms existed in a pure state, but only combined in different proportions in a molecule. Each molecule contained at least one atom of all four types, and obtained

I was tagged as the Bru Girl: Rakhi Sawant fumes over fake PR Megha
troversies on her behalf in the media. But recently, when he spread false reports that Rakhi wants pornstar Sunny Leone out of Bigg Boss, Rakhi blew her top. This Flynn guy had been calling me, posing as a journalist first and extracting information about my work, in the garb of taking my interviews. Later, when I learnt that he was incorrectly claiming to be my publicist, I stopped speaking to him and taking his calls. He has never been my publicist, but keeps issuing fake statements on my behalf, fumes Rakhi. Now I have hired Dale Bhagwagar as my publicist and he is a very straightforward and classy person. If this Flynn chap continues to harass me and spread incorrect reports about me, I will ask Dale to put him in place by clarifying the matters and also complain to the police and take legal action against Flynn. Uss fraud ko main uski naani yaad dila doongi, Rakhi shoots in her characteristic style. Coincidently, apart from representing Rakhi Sawant and other celebs and movies in Bollywood, Dale Bhagwagar is also the publicist to Shiney Ahuja, who was allegedly cornered by Anant Narayan, when the latter reportedly sent out press releases on behalf of Sayali Bhagat, without her consent. These releases had claimed that Sayali was sexually harassed by actors Amitabh Bachchan, Shiney Ahuja, Arya Babbar and filmmaker Sajid Khan. Sayali, who denies having made any such claims, is also learnt to have met up with Dale and consulted him about the problems she was facing, before filing a police complaint with the Cyber Crime Investigating Cell at Crime Branch in Mumbai.

Kolkata-born girl Megha Burman made her debut in the world of films with the much talked about film of recent times, 'Dam999'. Correspondent Supriyo Hazra caught up with Megha for a quick chat over the film. Excerpts
Speak something about your character in the film and how did you prepare yourself for the character? I play a Muslim girl named Raziya. She portrays the Shringara Rasa. She is the epitome of romance and love. Raziya grows very fond of a little boy Sam, and takes care of him like she would her own child. Freddy and Raziya are lovers and share great camaraderie in the film. I read the script several times. Then I started working from the inside. I started with her inner characteristic traits, her history with her parents, her emotional bond with Freddy. How she should cover her head and wear her clothes, how she should walk and talk. How did the opportunity to act in Dam999 come to you? I received a call for an audition after I was spotted on a television commercial. I went through a look test and performed important scenes from the film for the directing team. Three days later I was informed that they wanted me to portray Raziya. Speaking about the experience, how was it working with such international and eminent national actors? In the West they have a different work culture. The actors are represented by Agents and protected by unions. They worked on 8 hour shifts and 6 days a week. But essentially the passion and drive for acting was the same.I was a bundle before takes. All the other actors were great to work with. Jineet is a great kid; he stayed up way past his bedtime without making a fuss. Tell us something about your childhood and how did you start your career in acting? A friend and I had plans for an evening movie. She said she had to make a stop over at an audition. Once there everyone asked me to audition as well. Few days later I was shooting for the Bru Commercial. The popular jingle and well shot commercial had a very long run-time. I was tagged as the Bru Girl. One thing led to another. The rest they say is history. Who were your role models in the world of acting? I admire many artists and the work they do.I look up to actors for various reasons. Some for their inspiring body of work, some for their personality, and various other reasons. I strongly feel that everyone is unique in his or her own way. Tell us something about your upcoming projects? I have a brief but important part in Ajita Suchitra Veera's directorial debut 'Rustom ki Dastaan' . Currently in New York I am reading a script for an independent film.

Mumbai: Close on the heels of the arrest of journalist-turned-actorturned-publicist Anant Narayan, after a police complaint by former Miss India and actress Sayali Bhagat, a new PR scandal is coming to the fore. This time, another journalistturned-publicist called Flynn Remedios has been falsely claiming to be firebrand Rakhi Sawant's publicist and issuing misleading statements on her behalf. Flynn, who has earlier been arrested and jailed for various cases involving starlets Nandini Jumani, Sherlyn Chopra and Moon Das, is learnt to have sent out various press releases to the media, announcing developments in Rakhi's career, as well as addressing issues and con-

of nerves before shooting my scenes with them. I had very few scenes with Ashish Sir (Ashish Vidyarthi), so I did not get to interact as much with him. He was very focused on his work. Rajit Kapoor is a lot of fun. I worked with him on a Radio Drama for BBC much before Dam999. He has a great sense of humor, and would be cracking up

Desi Boyz: A light-hearted comedy

arNaB CharkraBorty
Well, it is all about the recession. The economic breakdown and the devastation it brings to lives of people is an apt background indeed. Then there is the core idea that gives you a jolttwo hunks, namely Jerry (Akshay) and Nick (John) forced to walk down the path of moral abuse by selling their souls to the commercial devil called Desi Boyz, an emblem of the easy red light money that often lures people in need of the dough. Such a novel concept and yet that is where the credibility bulb blinks off. Next up is everything from the clich menu- a goody two shoes orphan kid who just is every parents dream, a failure of society eventually sporting a brilliant rags to riches story, the lovers quarrel, the eye-candies. And the list goes on. For the rest of the movie watch out for the slick dialogues and the dude chemistry coz nothing else will matter.. the storY 2/5 It has become somewhat of an incredulity in itself to witness the repetition of the similar mistakes in Bollywood for the last few years. Perhaps it is the money making machinery that forces film makers to totter down the lane of garish mediocrity but certainly the word script has become unnecessary for a film. It is even sadder for films like Desi Boyz because behind all the

on the recession mode for the past couple of years but he comes alive as Jignesh aka Jerry on screen in Desi Boyz. He along with John offers a spicy chemistry that gives you the paisa vasool feeling at the end and for that kudos to them. As for Deepika, her presence is quite vapid to the movie and she fails to display the flare that one requires for this jolly offing and manages to be more of a hindrance unless she is showing off those pretty dimples. Chitrangada is even more horrible with her frigid act and instead of sizzling on screen she appears timid and hackneyed. As the epitome of teacher fantasises she appears a little too aggressive and instead of taunting looks almost in a terrible hurry to get things done. Sanjay Dutts cameo is delightful to watch and his antics offer several much needed gag scenarios. music 3/5 Pritams music is befitting to this tale of worthless splendour and offers dj style dance masti tracks but not any soulful ones worth humming. The songs are rather of the use and throw kind; you enjoy them while the story unfolds but discard them from your mind once the film is over. On the whole, not an absolute musical classic but still noticeable enough as party tracks.

meaningless glitter a fine story is trapped. The idea that could have turned heads if used as a satirical or dark comedy becomes worthless in this light hearted one. It could have posed questions and could have offered solutions to the ones like the one Deepika asks towards the end (if you can get the image of fifty odd men drooling over my naked body then perhaps I will forgive you) but in the end the pith of this celluloid offering becomes too vapid. There is every bit of the garbage amalgamation that has ruined every one of the recent films- an over the

top father son love (technically not the father though), too many slutty women throwing themselves at the feet of these two rock star gigolos, court room gags, sexy teacher, patriotic verbatim and even the odd Chatur. All of these and many more formulaic offerings from the nineties mar the otherwise promising idea. the Direction anD technique 2.5/5 The technical prowess of Bollywood has been on the rise and Desi Boyz is no exception to the rule. The pre-

sentation is slick and suave. The ci ne m at og r aphy is nice and this feature is an exception from the Dhawan household in terms of cinematic visuals. It borders more along the path of the Dostana mould and thus is a treat for the eyes. The flow of the scenes are smooth as well. The problem is really because of the character expositions and motivations that vacillate from some to none. The worst off are the girls (Deepika and Chitrangada) who actually have very little to offer except for their skin show. Even between them Chitrangadas character as the sexy teacher comes across as forced and desperate instead of a heavenly unattainable aura that it should have sported. the actinG 3/5 Hands off and hats in the air for the dude duo of this flick that made this otherwise shallow offering come alive. Desi Boyz happens to be the second movie of John and Akshay together after Garam Masala. Commenting on Johns current comic performance, Akshay said, John is now more comfortable with comedy. Garam Masala ke time pe.. jo John ki comic timing thi..aur jo aj hai..usme zameen aasmaan ka farak hai. Talking about his experience in Garam Masala, John said, During Garam Masala I was new and raw. I didnt understand comic timings, I really got flustered. I wasnt able to cope up the pressure of handling comedy. Deepika wants to work with Himesh

Mumbai: Actor Deepika Padukone has managed to turn heads with her sizzling chemistry on display with Akshay Kumar and John Abraham in her upcomming flick Desi Boyz. Deepika Padukone shared a candid conversation with trade analyst Komal Nahta on the show ETC Bollywood Business.where she said she is ready to do a film with singer-actorfilmmaker Himesh Reshamiya. Talking about her professional career,

Deepika said, I got my first film offer two years before Om Shanti Om. I had decided, I would never do two things; firstly work in a music video and secondly participate for Miss. India. However, I accepted Himesh Reshamiyas Naam hai tera tera album, as Himeshs songs were a rage at that time. Farah Khan noticed me in that video and casted me for Om Shanti Om. "Farah gave me a perfect launch in Bollywood. After doing a movie like Om Shanti OmI use to wonder iske baad main kya karugi Deepika is not one to forget favors, it seems. If I get an offer to do a film opposite Himesh Reshamiya, I would accept it.said Deepika. Clarifying her catfight rumors over a pink dress with Chitrangada, Deepika said, I dont think we had such movie budget constrains that me and Chitrangada had to fight over a dress. In fact, there was no pink dress in the movie. As a matter of fact, when I reached London for my shoot, Chitrangada had already done with her scenes and left. Even our looks in the movie is completely different. "Even professionally we do different kind of moviesour spaces are different. Such rumors create awkwardness with the person." Expressing her point of view to such media behaviour, Deepika said, There is no need to react to such rumors. People read and forget about what is written in the media. My movies..my work should speak for me.

Sonakshi stole my heart

With their off-screen romance doing rounds, Bollywoods cool newbies ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha have teamed up for Phantom Production's debut film Lootera, to be directed by vikramaditya Motwane of udaan fame. Correspondent Sreya Basu chats up the actors in Mumbai
Lootera is a love story set in the 1950s. Are you comfortable with this retro look? Ranveer: I am very happy about it. This is the coolest look I have ever had. Retro is my favourite school of style. So I am more than happy. Sonakshi: I am really excited about my Bengali look in the film. We have kept it the authentic waybe it make-up, jewellery or clothes, we are stuck to the 1950s. How are you working on your looks in the film? Ranveer: So far I have not got myself involved in the film. Whatever work has been done on my looks in the film, that was done by our costume designer Suparnaji. I will start full preparations for the film in Decemberworkshops, look of the character, body language, speech. Sonakshi: Suparnaji has done a lot of research before making our looks a reality. As you can seeall of us are looking very authentic from 1950s. Like I am playing a Bengali girl in the film and she has kept authenticity in my character. What are your expectations from Lootera? Sonakshi: I am lucky that I got to work with such talented people so early in my career. Given the kind of film Lootera is, it is probably the most challenging role to date that I have got. I know I am in good hands. Vikramaditya Motwane is a fantastic director and I would give it my best. So, expectations are obviously very high. Tell us about your on-screen chemistry. Sonakshi: We havent started shooting for the film yet. As and when we do, you will know it. Ranveer: I remember Youtubing the trailer of Dabangg (Sonakshis debut film) and when she delivered that dialogue-Thappar se darr nehin lagta saab, pyaar se lagta hai- she had me right there. So I have been wanting to work with her since then. I am very excited that it has finally happened and more than excited about the fact that Vikram is going to direct it. I am expecting something fantastic to come out of this collaboration. Ranveer, are you a good lootera? Ranveer: Main bahut accha lootera hoon (I am a very good thief). I will prove it next year by robbing your hearts. Tell us who has the capability to steal your hearts? Ranveer: After watching Dabangg, Sonakshi stole my heart. I was an awestruck audience. Sonakshi: After Band Baaja Baaraat, I have praised Ranveer so much that you people (media) even wove stories about us. But of course, he is a very talented actor and its good that we are coming together in a film. I am looking forward to it. As newcomers both you are working with some of the biggest names of the industry. How do you handle star tantrums? Sonakshi: I dont handle it. I just do my work and be happy doing my work. After work, I return home and go to sleep. The next day I am back to work. I love what I am doing and as an actor thats the only thing important for me. Ranveer: I just be my self. If people want to judge me let them do that. I will be what I am. Sonakshi, industry buzz says you have put on weight. True? Sonakshi: Seems people are very concerned about my weight (laughs). Its (weight) the same.
