Gotta work to make things work Gotta change to change the world Cause we cannot deny, we gotta give

it a try We are never too young to come as one And to make a stand. For together, were strong Now it wont be for long Till we heal this broken land If we live what weve learned Take this time to take our turn To make a stand! Let that voice out inside That we cant keep on hiding Gotta work to make things work Gotta change to change the world Cause we cannot deny, we gotta give it a try We are never too young to come as one And to make a stand. We can stand and make a stand Heart to heart and hand in hand Let that voice out inside That we cant keep on hiding Gotta work to make things work Gotta change to change the world Cause we cannot deny, we gotta give it a try We are never too young to come as one We can make a stand.

FIRST MASS OF MISA DE GALLO |16 December 2011, National Youth Day

Closing of the CBCP Year of the Youth Celebration of the Holy Eucharist

INTRODUCTION Today, the 16th of December and the first day of our traditional Misa de Gallo (or novena masses) in preparation for the celebration of the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, was declared last 1986 by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) as National Youth Day. Exactly a year ago today, we have launched the CBCP Year of the Youth, a most special period in the history of our Church in the Philippines. Our Eucharistic celebration today will conclude this grace-filled year, a beautiful gift given to us by our Lord, blessing us as a Church to continuously show our appreciation of young people and their rich features, strong capabilities and significant roles in society. Through youth ministry, the Church continues to accompany the youth towards a personal and living relationship with Christ, recognition and enhancement of their own talents, and empowered participation in society. As we close this CBCP Year of the Youth, let us altogether pray to our Lord Jesus for our youth. May He continue to bless all our efforts so that the youth ministry in our country will be more fruitful. May we as Church lead the young to a life that is holy and committed to service for many years to come. May the many fruits of this CBCP Year of the Youth lead us to a more productive and empowered youth ministry as we continue journeying towards new life in Christ. Here, an AVP featuring activities during the CBCP Year of the Youth may be played. If this is not possible, a collage of pictures and images may be shown or available as an exhibit. The entrance song follows.

Opening Prayer PRESIDER Let us pray. All-powerful Father, guide us with your love as we await the coming of your Son. Keep us faithful that we may be helped through life and brought to salvation. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit One God, for ever and ever. ALL Amen.

MAKE A STAND

Theme Song of the Double Celebration: CBCP Year of the Youth and ECY 25th Anniversary How long must we sit and wait for a hero? And how long must we waste today for tomorrow? To our people thats lost in the dark We can be guiding hand, shining star If we only could see that the hero is here In our hearts, young as we are We can stand and make a stand Heart to heart and hand in hand Let that voice out inside That we cant keep on hiding Gotta work to make things work Gotta change to change the world Cause we cannot deny, we gotta give it a try We are never too young to come as one And to make a stand. Stand firm, be a guiding light to the nation Stand proud, let's unite in one celebration With the Power of God from above We can tell all the world of His love Standing firm in the faith Doing all of our work from the heart We've got to start to make a stand We can stand and make a stand Heart to heart and hand in hand Let that voice out inside That we cant keep on hiding

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading Responsorial Psalm Gospel Homily It is strongly suggested that the homilist give emphasis on the fruits of the CBCP Year of the Youth and the challenges it poses to the young, to the youth ministry, and to everyone in the Church. Prayers of the Faithful PRESIDER: As we long for the coming of the Messiah, Let us offer to God all our hearts desires. Let us pray to Him so that He may continue to show us His saving love and care especially to our young people.

With Mary, mother and model, We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. Supporting our Youth and the Ministry among Them Let us join our young people in singing and dancing the theme song of the CBCP-Year of the Youth, Make A Stand (cf p.11). While the song is animated, a second collection for the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Youth and the Diocesan Youth Ministry may be done to support the ministry among the young. If this collection is to be done, it is essential to explain this to the assembly before the animation of the theme song. Acknowledgment of the Youth After the song, the commentator says: Let us give our young people a warm round of applause! (or any other appropriate gesture of appreciation) Important announcements may be done here.

Let us pray: LORD, HEAR YOUR PEOPLE! When possible and appropriate, the following intentions may be translated and prayed in different languages / dialects 1 For the Church May she continue to shower her love to all. May she bring true unity and protection especially to the youth. Let us pray to the Lord. 2 For the Holy Father, bishops, priests and deacons May they continue to witness to the young through their service in the Church so that they become living witnesses of Christ. May they remain zealous in showing their great love for the young. Let us pray to the Lord. 3 For our country and our leaders May the Philippines be a protective and nurturing shelter to young people who bring progress and promote peace. May our public leaders serve generously all the needs of the poor and marginalized. Let us pray to the Lord. 4 For all the youth May the CBCP Year of the Youth continue to be fruitful so that all young people may be instruments of renewal in the Church and of transformation in the country. Let us pray to the Lord. 5 For the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Youth and all youth ministry offices in dioceses, parishes, schools, youth organizations and other settings, and all other forms of work for the welfare of the youth May God bless and protect these sectors and groups serving the

young so that a brighter future may be upon us all. Let us pray to the Lord. 6 For all of us here May we strive to learn to be examples of humility, generosity and love, as shown by Jesus, and share these to the young and to those in need. Let us pray to the Lord. 7 For our personal intentions In silence, let us pray for our own intentions (pause for silence) Let us pray to the Lord. PRESIDER: Loving Father, You gave us Your Son so that we may become close to You. May we learn to bring His presence to all and make others feel Your love and salvation. This we ask through Christ, our Lord. ALL: Amen.

Prayer for the Youth Let us all rise and pray for all the young people as well as for all youth ministries in the Philippines. May we request everyone aged 13 to 39 present here in this Eucharist, meaning all the young, to kneel. The celebrant prays over the young people: PRESIDER: Lord, You said to Your people Let the children come to me, for theirs is the kingdom of God. You acknowledge the value of the young as You give them a significant role in Your saving plan. We thank You, Lord, that You redeem us and let us take part in your great plan of salvation. Open the mind of every young person to grasp completely the beauty of a life lived in Your love. Direct those youth whose paths have gone astray. Heal those who are undergoing difficulties. Lighten the burden of those carrying responsibilities beyond their young age. Empower all our young people to influence one another along the path of holiness. As we close the CBCP Year of the Youth, may the days ahead become stepping stones to open new possibilities and cross boundaries for the sake of our youth. Lead our hearts towards solidarity to end the chain of division leading to selfishness and destruction. Be with us as we journey with Your young people along the way of standing firm in the faith and doing all our work in love.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Offering of Gifts Before the procession of the gifts, a symbol of thanksgiving for the CBCP Year of the Youth will be offered, e.g. a seedling may be a symbol of thanksgiving. It is strongly suggested that a dedicated place for this symbol is provided on the sanctuary, such as near the logo of the CBCP Year of the Youth which was offered in the Eucharist of 16 December 2010 to begin the CBCP Year of the Youth (if this is in the sanctuary).

and of young people in our community. Both show us hope not only for the future but also for the present, and give us joy, energy and passion. We thank You for the grace of the CBCP Year of the Youth: a special period for our youth to grow in Your grace, and for all of us in the Church to look into our sharing in Your renewing work in their lives, to celebrate their presence in our midst, and to put out into the deep of their challenging world as a united community. Faithful to Your trust in the young, may we continue to bear Your love for them beyond this CBCP Year of the Youth For the elders among us: Through our care for all the youth in our homes and neighbourhoods and our support for the youth ministries in our parish, schools, and other settings And for the youth among us: Through our personal friendship with Jesus Christ, our striving for integral growth, and our active involvement in our communities. Together with our Blessed Mother and the many young saints, we make this prayer in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Brother, through the power of the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

The Pledge of Commitment created during the Youth Ministry Awareness Week 2011 is also offered, which may be placed beside the seedling. While all these are done, a young person reads the following: Lord, we offer You our thanksgiving for the many blessings You have given us this special year. For one year, we celebrated the presence of the young, reflected on our ministry among them and prayed that we all become closer to You. In closing this year that You have willed for us in the Philippines, we give You our praise and thanksgiving. We offer this (symbol, e.g. seedling) that symbolizes our dreams and aspirations for young people. May this be a reminder for all of us, young and old, of our commitment to share continuously to one another and to others the spirit of the CBCP Year of the Youth: to stand firm in our faith and to do all our work in love. We also offer You our commitment to be Your living witnesses to all, and to live a life according to Your life-giving will. Bless our efforts: may we enthrone You in our hearts so that You will be reflected in us, and bring You to our brethren, so that together, we may offer You our eternal thanksgiving through Jesus, our Ka-lakbay, our Brother and Lord. Amen. After this prayer, the procession of the gifts while singing the offertory song follows.

SPECIAL RITE FOR THE CBCP YEAR OF THE YOUTH

Prayer of Thanksgiving United as one Body of Christ, we request everyone to kneel as we give thanks to our God for this grace-filled CBCP Year of the Youth. As we close this blessed year, let us pray for our young people and for everyone involved in the youth ministry, including ourselves. This thanksgiving prayer will be led by an adult, preferably a leader in the community.
