What is it? Why is it important? When do I use it? Clues? Model (I)

An authors viewpoint is what author thinks or feels about the subject he or she is writing about. When authors write, their stories often reflect their own thought, feelings or beliefs. The author reveals his viewpoint through their choice of words. To find out what an author thinks, feels, or believes, look at the words the author uses and the opinions they share. Words like most amazing, wonderful, important and exciting will give you a good idea of how the author feels about the subject.

Day 1
Building Background: Tell children that you are going to read aloud a story about a bear that discovers his talent. Ask the students to tell how they feel about doing things that they are good at and things that are difficult for them. The teacher will read aloud Omar on Ice, TE T32-TE T33, modeling fluent reading as well as defining author's viewpoint for students and discussing the author's viewpoint of the text upon completion of the reading. Ask the students to pay attention to details that tells the authors beliefs, thoughts, and feelings as they listen to the story. Ask Comprehensive questions on (pg. T33).

Day 2
The teacher will conduct a shared reading of The Art Lesson, TE T46-TE T61, pausing frequently to evaluate the text, asking student's input to identify the author's viewpoint to the text.

Day 3
The teacher will allow time for students to reread The Art Lesson, TE T46-TE T61, independently or with a partner, next guide students to complete the graphic organizer on the transparency, TRAN 65, that allows time for students to reflect on the author's viewpoint of the text. TE T68TE T69

Day 4
Review: Standard Following Directions What is it? Why is it important? When do I use it? Essential Question Why is it important to follow directions when you are reading informational text? AND Comprehension Strategy/Skill/Shared Reading- How to Adjust Your Reading Rate. The teacher will conduct a shared reading of the Health Link article Welcome to the Kitchen: How to Adjust Your Reading Rate, TE T150-TE T151, taking time to explain the importance of adjusting your rate of reading

Review: Test Taking Skills Read with Fluency Read each question Read each answer. Cross out the distracters Go back into the story to find the correct answer (underline it). Fill in the correct answer. Use the SRE Method to answer questions that you write the answer.
