Presidents Message
Dear All, As one year closes and another begins, it is customary for each person to access where they are in life and make plans to change how they live their life in the new year. This custom dates back to Babylonian times when making resolutions for change were a part of the celebration of a new year. The most popular resolution then was to return borrowed equipment; however, I doubt that is high on anyones list today. The celebration of the new year is one of our oldest holidays and has been celebrated for over 4000 years. Dating back to Babylon, it was celebrated on the first day of Spring, since it was the beginning of the season of rebirth, of planting new crops and of blossoming. The Romans continued to celebrate this holiday in the spring as well, but their calendar was continually tampered with and got out of synch with the sun. Although they tried to set the calendar right in 153 B.C. and set January 1 as the beginning of the new year, it was not until CHECK US OUT ON: Julius Caesar established the Julian Calendar that the calendar was stabilized and January 1 was again established as first day of the new year. Since the church remained opposed to this celebration as pagan, January 1 has only been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations for about 400 years. Aqua Grill Named 2011 Small Business of the Year


In the fall of 1987, restaurateur Cary Hart moved from Gainesville to Ponte Vedra Beach to open a second location of his successful Aw Shucks restaurant. In March of 1988, coinciding with THE PLAYERS Championship, the doors of Aw Shucks opened for business. For eleven years, Aw Shucks operated successfully in Sawgrass Village showing steady, continued growth. In 1999, with an interior renovation under works, Hart decided to change the name from Aw Shucks to Aqua Grill, in order to better reflect the diverse and eclectic gourmet menu coupled with a casually elegant ambiance. The interior improvements, coupled with the name change, proved to be a profitable decision as Aqua Grill continued to reinvent itself and prosper. Working hand in hand with the Sawgrass Marriott and all of their hospitality partners who send out of town guests to Aqua Grill, their goal has always been to act as an ambassador to folks visiting the area. They want visitors to leave Ponte Vedra with a WOW experience that they can not wait to share with friends. The mission and business philosophy have remained consistent for the past 23 years: Build relationships, promote a sense of community, always come from a place of yes, and be a steward of the special moments in people's lives. They are proud to also offer locals a place to call their own. Aqua Grill's goal is to act as an extension of someone's family and offer them a warm, friendly gathering spot where community members gather for business and pleasure, and to share and commemorate the special occasions in a customer's life. As a result, their bar is known as the local Cheers, where everyone knows your name. Congratulations to Cary Hart and his staff for their commitment to both their customers and to our community.

McDonald, We are excited to announce that Barry McDonald General Manager of Sawagrass Country Club, has joined the Ponte Vedra Chamber Board of Directors. He is originally from the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York and has been the Sawgrass Country Clubs General Manager for past three years. Barrys career in the hospitality industry includes several world class clubs in both southwest Florida and central New York over the past fifteen years. Barrys background in club management has allowed him to pursue his passion of golf and his sincere interest in providing the highest level of sporting and social programs for membership clubs. Other interests include fishing, boating and dining out around Jacksonville. Barry has a degree in Hospitality Management from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and an MBA from Florida Gulf Coast University. He is also an involved member of the Club Managers Association of America and holds their certification in club management designation, CCM.

Margaret Miele joined BBVA Compass in January 2006 and later was appointed vice president and preferred client manager of Northeast Florida. In 2008, she was named district sales manager of the Retail Banking Branch which involved supporting relationships with 35 branch networks. Margaret has been the Business Relationship Manager of the Ponte Vedra Branch since 2010. Prior to BBVA Compass, she spent 10 years working for MBNA America Bank in Cleveland, Ohio in a variety of management positions. Margaret holds a BA from Ohio University and an MBA in Business Management from John Carroll University also in Ohio. Small Business Give Back
As the end of 2011 rapidly approaches, although there is still trepidation about what lies ahead for the economy and your business, small business owners still want (and need) to recognize employees for their performance and customers for their loyalty throughout the year. Consider these tips:

Acknowledge all staff. When allocating bonuses, do not forget the behind-the-scenes people who have helped craft the successful client presentations and made the travel arrangements possible. Try to include them in your bonus-giving plans.
Give the gift of time. If you can not afford to give bonuses this year, give the next best thing time. Extra time off during the holidays or an opportunity to come in late one day a week, for example, demonstrate your appreciation of your staff.

Tie employee bonuses to goals. Bonuses should non-subjective, measurable, and performance-oriented. So clearly align bonuses with company or staff goals. If you did not set goals with staff this year but still want to give bonuses, consider tying employee performance to recognized company goals.

When giving gifts to customers, promote products from other small businesses. Support the businesses in Ponte Vedra by purchasing gifts from your fellow Chamber members. Consider charitable contributions. If your customer is involved in a specific cause or group, consider giving to that charity. Making donations on behalf of the people on your list can be a meaningful way to say thank you.
