AFLSAMOA Runs first ever annual Level 1 AFL Coaching and Umpiring Workshop for school teachers and principals!
On the 22nd of November 2011 AFL Representative Andrew Cadzow was in Samoa running the first annual AFL Level 1 Coaching and Umpiring Workshop a course that ran from 9am till 4pm. The course helped our enthusiastic teachers understand the game of Aussie rules and train them in how to coach their students. This program also trained them in how to umpire games of AFL. The day was a big success with 25+ teachers turning up from all our rural based schools that offer AFL in their school sports program.

The biggest thing lacking in Samoa at the moment is a shortage of Umpires and Coaches. With this course completed we now have accredited level 1 AFL teachers in schools who can now umpire games at tournaments. Said AFLSamoa Development Officer Gabel Stathis. The next refresher course will be held in early 2012. Watch this space to secure your spot!

Essendon loaded up on the pace and class that was in short supply at Windy Hill. North Melbourne only had two picks but they made them count with midfielder Brad McKenzie, who is an outstanding kick, and promising key forward Tom Curran. St Kilda added experience in recycled Eagle Beau Wilkes and landed impressive mid-sized forward Daniel Markworth with pick 39. Adelaide fans woke up bewildered after the Crows who are short on talls opted to take players they regarded as the best available instead of targeting height. They ended up with four mids and flankers.
Fijis AFL star Nic Naitanui will travel home to be part of the action. He will be joined by Tongan Israel Folau who will play his first AFL season with the Greater Western Sydney Giants in 2012. Its inspiring to see lads from our neighbouring islands make the big time in the AFL. Nick and Israel are two of the genuine big names of the competition and both have huge careers ahead of them. Nations competing in the championships that will be played at Albert Park in Suva include : Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Samoa didnt field a side this year but with all the recent enthusiasm around the game in Samoa we expect to field a very competitive team next year. So come on all you budding AFL stars we need you to get out there on the oval so that we can put together a team for next year.
