NATIONAL PARKS
John Forrest National Park First established in 1898, this park was named in honour of the famous WA explorer and statesman in 1947. In the Perth Hills, the park provides magnificent views and contains a variety of walk trails and seasonal spectacular waterfalls. Serpentine National Park Bordered by the South Western Highway, this park is best known for its waterfall cascading over sheer granite during winter months. A wheelchairaccessible walk trail along the Serpentine River leads to the magnificent Serpentine Falls. Mundaring National Park There are a number of recreational sites as well as lookouts offering panoramic views over

Mundaring Weir. The Munda Biddi Trail runs through parts of the park, meandering through river valleys and magnificent eucalypt forests. Munda Biddi, which means path through the forest in the local Nyoongar language, is a cycle trail which is being constructed to give cyclists the opportunity to ride approximately 1,000km from Perth to Albany through some of the states most spectacular scenery. Yanchep National Park Abundant native flora and fauna and rich in Aboriginal and European history, here you can explore the limestone caves, discover the beautiful freshwater lake and see one of WAs largest koala colonies. For information on national parks in Western Australia, including entry fees or camping permits visit naturebase.net

BUSHWALKING
Around Perth youll find some spectacular wellmaintained tracks and trails that will get you closer to the Australian bush than you could have hoped for. The Bibbulmun Track is a long-distance world class track, sprawling 965km from Kalamunda in the eastern outskirts of Perth, all the way through the South West to Albany. The track heads through some of the most wild and spectacular scenery in Western Australia, and it passes through many townships along the way, so it is possible to take on just a short section of the track. Or you can take on the challenge of the full course, joining an exclusive group of Bibbulmun endto-enders. The track is best avoided in summer, when fires and the heat can be hazardous. The ideal time to walk the Bibbulmun Track is autumn or spring, when the colours and scents of the wildflowers are heady, and the natural forests are at their most magnificent. Escape and relax at Rottnest

ROTTNEST ISLAND
Rotto is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, located just 18km off Fremantle, its just a short ferry trip away half an hour from Fremantle, 40 minutes from Hillarys and an hour down the Swan River from Perth city. Once there it feels like another world entirely and is a perfect destination for a day trip or a relaxing longer stay.

Occupied originally by the Indigenous people of the Nyoongar Tribe 6500 years ago, the Island has been made use of in many ways since the arrival of European settlers, including as an Aboriginal penal colony. Prisoners who were kept there from 18381904 are responsible for the construction of many of the buildings on the island, including the lighthouse.

Rottnest is surrounded by some of the worlds finest beaches and bays, popular for snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing and swimming. Whale and dolphin watching are also popular experiences during the migration season. Rottnest is home to an array of flora and fauna, including everyones favourite (and protected) furry little creature, the quokka. The most popular way to see Rottnest is by bicycle, as the island is almost traffic-free. The lack of vehicles on the island enhances its peaceful and relaxed lifestyle. There is a variety of accommodation available from a hotel to holiday villas, units and bungalows to camping facilities (see page 62).

BEACHES
Perth has clean, unspoilt white beaches and blue water, with options for everyone from families with small children, to keen surfers and divers. Youll find great beaches along the Sunset Coast (see map on page 72) as well as further south in Mandurah and Rockingham and around Rottnest Island. One of our most famous beaches, Cottesloe Beach, is simply beautiful, and equally popular with tourists and locals. The clean, clear coastline and manicured lawns ensure its bustling during summer, and there are plenty of cafs nearby where you can watch the passing action. City Beach is popular with locals; its the best beach to seek out local sporting teams training in the off season. Swanbourne Beach is a reasonably safe swimming beach with the biggest

danger being the short break which can develop with strong onshore winds. Popular with nudists!. Renowned for their cafes as well as good surfing are Scarborough Beach and Trigg Island Beach. Worth seeing at Trigg are the limestone outcrops, which are home to many species of native birds. This spot is perfect for surfers and is home to some of Perths surf schools. The clear, shallow lagoons in the Marmion Marine Park are perfect for families with young children or inexperienced swimmers. Its a great spot to see some Australian marine life, including sea lions, bottlenosed dolphins and even humpback whales offshore in season. Penguin Island is just a 5 minute ferry ride off the coast of Rockingham in the crystal clear waters of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. It is home to a large

colony of little penguins and other wildlife and has something special for visitors of all ages. As well as the Penguin Island Discovery Centre there are picnic areas, lookouts and pristine beaches that can be accessed by a network of boardwalks and walkways. Good visibility and interesting coral formations make the waters around Perth popular for scuba diving. Local companies operate dive charters and youll have no trouble hiring everything you need. Lifesavers patrol Perth beaches in summer, so always remember to swim between the flags for your safety. Too many holiday-makers get sunburnt, so make sure you protect yourself. When going out into the sun, wear sensible clothing including a hat. Apply SPF30+ sunscreen and try to avoid the midday sun by having lunch indoors or in the shade. The Cancer Council WA stocks a comprehensive range of sun-protection items in their showroom at 334 Rokeby Road in Subiaco, visit cancerwa.asn.au for more information.

Fresh local produce is what you can expect from Perths best dining experiences

dining
Food, glorious food! You might not want to break into song but one of the most exciting aspects of a visit to Perth is the enormous range of taste sensations available. Australias multicultural society is one of our greatest assets and it is never more evident than in the variety of restaurants and cuisine available to diners. Throughout the Perth, Fremantle and greater metropolitan area youll find many restaurants offering al fresco dining. On a beautiful summer evening perhaps enjoying an Indian Ocean sunset, spectacular Swan River views or just taking in the local colour whilst being served a memorable meal outdoors is a special experience. Enjoy locally-produced seafood with a variety of specialty dishes including barramundi, tiger prawns, and the delicately flavoured marron (freshwater crayfish). The popularity of Japanese restaurants in Perth attests to the freshest raw seafood used for sashimi and sushi. Mouthwatering steaks are a speciality of many local restaurants, particularly those using Harvey beef from WAs south west dairy region, and will tempt all but the vegetarians who are well catered for both in specialty vegetarian restaurants and with varied menu choices at mainstream venues. The noisy fun of a dim sum lunch at one of Northbridges traditional Asian tea houses is cheap, nutritious and delicious. Along with a refreshing cup of green tea, enjoy steamed pork buns, fried chicken feet and scrumptious egg tarts just some of the dishes served to diners from steaming trolleys. Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai restaurants are popular, and tapas bars, and wine bars, along with gourmet burger cafes have become more prominent. The well-established cosmopolitan population of Perth ensures that international styles of food are created authentically in many restaurants. With the variety of fine dining establishments in and around Perth were sure you wont be disappointed for choice.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN WINE AND BEER

Heres your golden opportunity to sample some of the best wine in the world. Our warm climate, combined with relatively high rainfall, is perfect for producing almost all grape varieties. The Swan Valley is on our doorstep while the world renowned Margaret River wine region is just a few hours to the south. Most restaurants and bottle shops will stock a good range of local wines, as well as those from other states and overseas. Staff

will be able to recommend wines depending on your tastes and dining plans. Good wines to take home can be purchased at duty free shops. You will have no trouble finding varieties from the major winegrowing districts of WA so, look out for wines from the Swan Valley, Margaret River, Mount Barker and Denmark. Australian sparkling wines, made using the traditional methode champenoise, also make great gifts. Australia is in the top ten nations of the world for beer consumption per head of population so

naturally we know a thing or two about it! The Swan Brewery is WAs own major manufacturer of regular beer, as much a local icon as the black swan on its logo. You can find Swan and Emu beers on tap at most pubs throughout the state. Boutique breweries and microbreweries such as Ironbark Brewery and the Duckstein Brewery, both located in the Swan Valley, and Little Creatures Brewery and the Matilda Bay Brewing Company in Fremantle, have flourished in recent times. They sell their beers onsite and most have restaurants as well.

Other popular places to visit include the Deen, Mustang Bar or Universal Bar. Just north of the city along Beaufort Street youll find Mount Lawley, a haven of coffee shops, boutique stores, pubs and restaurants. The Queens is the most popular place to sample a range of fine beer and wine or enjoy a hearty meal. You can also visit the Must Wine Bar with its extensive wine list and exotic cocktails or the Flying Scotsman for a casual beer and a bite.

Head to trendy Subiaco just 5km from Perth to see and be seen. The Subiaco Hotel on the corner of Rokeby Road and Hay Street is always busy; other lively venues in the area are the Village Bar, the Vic and the Red Sea nightclub. Fremantle has its own vibrant nightlife centred around the pubs, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs on South Terrace and High Street, and over by Fishing Boat Harbour. Our unique port city has a richly diverse culture and the atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. See page 53 for more information about Fremantle. By law, alcohol cannot be served to anyone under 18 years of age and service may be refused to those who appear intoxicated. Photographic proof of identification may be required for entry to nightclubs or service in pubs. Smoking is not permitted in restaurants and cafes with restrictions that include outdoor dining areas. 43 Theatre and the arts are alive in Perth the Perth Cultural Precinct between James and Roe Streets in Northbridge is home to the new State Theatre Centre of WA which features the Heath Ledger Theatre, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum and the Alexander Library. A popular live performance venue is the Burswood Theatre at the Burswood Entertainment Complex, just east of the city centre. At present the Burswood Dome hosts large concerts, and indoor sporting events but this will soon be replaced with the Perth Arena, a brand new indoor venue complete with retractable roof, under construction in the heart of the city. Its due for completion in 2012. The magnificent Edwardian His Majestys Theatre is a 100-year-old building that has been restored to its former grandeur and makes a splendid home for the WA Ballet and WA Opera companies. There are several performance spaces and backstage tours are available. Renowned as having one of the finest music acoustics in the southern hemisphere, the Perth Concert Hall has played host to some of the worlds great classical musical ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. Legendary musical greats such as Ray Charles and Nina Simone have performed there and it is where the West Australian Symphony Orchestra regularly perform. Other live performance venues in and around Perth include the Regal Theatre in Subiaco and the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley; both examples of restored Art Deco buildings. With a climate like ours its easy to understand why we prefer out entertainment outdoors in summertime. There are many outdoor cinemas showing both mainstream and arthouse movies. Pack a picnic, grab some friends and head to the Northbridge Piazza in the heart of town, the Somerville Theatre at UWA, Moonlight Cinema at Kings Park, Movies by Burswood or Camelot Outdoor Cinema in Mosman Park. See the Events section on page 44 or visit our website for details of current shows and events.

Dining at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour

find yourself in fremantle

There are so many things you can do whilst visiting Fremantle stroll around Fishing Boat Harbour or enjoy a meal of locally caught fish, or have a coffee on the South Terrace strip. Get around Fremantle with a hop-on, hop-off guided tram, walk a self-guided trail, or hop on a ferry for a different perspective of this beautiful city. In a bygone era when passenger ships were the preferred mode of transport for world travellers, Fremantle was the western gateway to Australia. Millions of migrants arrived by ship and many made the area their home. Jet travel changed Fremantles prominence as a destination but the port city was rejuvenated when it became the centre of world attention during the Australian defence of the Americas Cup in 1987. Fremantle today retains much of its old charm. Many of Fremantles old buildings have been painstakingly restored and the West End of town is acclaimed as one of the best examples of a Victorian port streetscape in the world. There is a vibrant atmosphere in Freo; there is always something happening around the town festivals, exhibitions, street performances, markets and concerts. Fremantle is a working port, host to a big fishing fleet as well as container ships and large cruise vessels. It maintains a vibrant commercial life and is a desirable tourist destination. It has, however, retained its cosmopolitan nature and preserved its identity, largely through the good sense and dedication of its modern-day civic managers. Fremantle is a hub for arts lovers, with local musicians and street performers out to impress the crowds on weekends. And Fremantle doesnt go to sleep after dark! The bars, pubs and nightclubs that abound are just warming up when the sun goes down. countrywide.com.au

HISTORY
Port of Fremantle Fremantle has long been an integral aspect of the Western Australian landscape, first being used as a port in 1829 to service the newly established Swan River Colony. Fremantle and its inner harbour are among the oldest institutions in WA. Since then it has grown to become one of the most important and busiest ports in Australia; for more than 100 years the working port has played a leading role in shaping the physical, social and commercial environment of Fremantle. Fremantle has two main harbours, one of which was designed by engineer C.Y. OConnor and opened in 1897, the other, 20km further south, was opened in 1955. The port of

Fremantle is home to a 500-ship fishing fleet, as well as numerous yachts and recreational boats. Many cruise ships from around the world stop in at Fremantle, and it is a major port for trade with Singapore and other Asian countries, as well as Africa and the Middle East. The port has also hosted some of the biggest international events on the sailing calendar, including the 1987 Americas Cup Challenge. Historic buildings The magnificent Fremantle Town Hall building in Kings Square, opened in 1887 as part of Queen Victorias Jubilee celebrations, has now been restored to its original beauty. In the past it has been home to the post office, telephone exchange and a resident ghost.

Built in the 1850s by convict labour and decommissioned in 1991, Fremantle Prison is a monument to an uncomfortably recent system of punishment. Feel your skin crawl as you are taken back in time on death row, solitary confinement or the gallows. The Subi is a great meeting place in the heart of Subiaco

subiaco
Subiaco is one of Perths most vibrant inner suburbs, with shopping centres, markets and a wealth of cafes and restaurants. An alternative to Northbridge, Subiaco is alive every day and night. When shopping in Subiaco youll find almost every type of store including jewellery, homewares, arts and technology as well as a feast of fashion for both men and women at the Colonnade Shopping Centre on Hay Street. Many fine old buildings have been renovated, and many homes in the area are heritage-listed. The Subiaco Museum on Rokeby Rd is the only remaining original municipal building in Subiaco, dating back to 1911. Youll find the Subiaco Hotel, known as The Subi in the heart of Subiaco on Rokeby Road its one of the most popular meeting places in the area. On the opposite corner is the Regal Theatre, home to both locally-produced and internationally-touring live performances. Whether your tastes run to dance, musicals or theatrical productions, the Regal adds a touch of artistic culture to the area all year round. Subiaco is also a mecca for foodies you may find it hard to choose from numerous tempting restaurants and cafes. Ranging from a la carte dining to quick and easy take-away food, you can find Japanese, Indian, Thai, Korean, Greek, Italian, and others. Dominating the skyline is Patersons Stadium, home of Australian Rules Football in Western Australia. The ground seats more than 40,000 spectators so if you hear a chorus of cheers or boos echoing through the streets, youll know theres a game of footy on.

Perths iconic Cottesloe Beach

sunset coast
If one aspect of WA were to characterise life in the West, surely its our beaches those magical places where the Indian Ocean meets the land. Perth has clean, unspoilt white beaches and blue water, contrasting the native bushland landscape just a short drive from the coast. The Sunset Coast encompasses a strip of Indian Ocean coastline which stretches north from Fremantle all the way up to Yanchep, 45 minutes drive from Perth. It is this proximity to the city that has helped make the Sunset Coast such a popular spot, as well as the memorable sunsets, busy beach-side cafes and safe swimming beaches, all within just a few kilometres of Perth and Fremantle. The Sunset Coast is best known for being home to some of Perths most iconic beaches, including Cottesloe Beach; its clear blue waters and beachside cafes making it a popular choice during the summer months. Whether youre after calm waters for little bathers or waves for surfing, theres a beach on the Sunset Coast to suit, see page 26 for more information. The Sunset Coast is not just about the beaches though. Visitors will find great restaurants and shopping outlets at the marina at Hillarys Boat Harbour, 30 mins north of Perth city, a leisure, dining and entertainment centre sitting in a sheltered bay. The Harbour is probably best known as the home of AQWA, the Aquarium of WA, but visitors should make sure to leave time for a leisurely browse through the many shops on Sorrento Quay itself, which is open seven days a week. There are many dining options, including a la carte seafood restaurants, smorgasbords, cafes and takeaways...and because youre on a quay, the ocean views are superb. countrywide.com.au

74 Good visibility and interesting coral formations make the waters around Perth popular for scuba diving. Several local companies operate dive charters and youll have no trouble hiring gear and tanks. The many coral reefs and limestone caves off the coast of Rottnest Island are particularly popular, with some of WAs best snorkelling spots. Because its an island, theres always somewhere sheltered to swim, and in places the reef comes right up to the beach. AQWA the Aquarium of Western Australia Located at Hillarys Boat Harbour, AQWA is one of the Sunset Coasts major attractions. From the icy waters of the Southern Ocean to the tropical wonderland of coral reefs in the far north, AQWA takes you on an underwater journey to discover the incredible and unique marine life of our 12,000km coastline. Featuring Australias largest aquarium and underwater tunnel, the worlds largest collection of Western Australian marine life, beautiful living coral reefs, giant sharks, rays and turtles and hands-on fun, this is a great day out for the whole family. The gift shop offers a great range of unique marine themed products and quality Australian souvenirs and the cafe serves delicious coffee and meals. Open daily (see page 15). The City of Stirling Beaches in the City of Stirling include Scarborough Beach and Trigg Island Beach. Worth seeing at Trigg are the limestone outcrops, which are home to many species of native birds. These beaches are perfect for surfers and home to some of Perths surf schools. The clear, shallow lagoons in the Marmion Marine Park are perfect for families with young children or inexperienced swimmers. Its a great spot to see some Australian marine life, including sea lions, bottlenosed dolphins and even humpback whales offshore in season. Visit stirling.wa.gov.au or phone 9345 8555 City of Joondalup Each summer the City of Joondalup conduct a variety of free events, including concerts and the awesome Joondalup Festival. Bring the whole family to the Sunset Markets in the city centre on Friday evenings and enjoy free entertainment, kids activities and, of course, stalls showcasing everything from food to fashion, toys to textiles and coffee to craftwork. Vineyards in the Swan Valley

swan valley
Lush green vineyards, vines bursting with grapes, wine, delicious food and other delights are all part of the experience in Perths leafy Swan Valley and the region houses boutique restaurants, art and craft galleries and enough beautiful scenery for a thousand postcards. Just 25 minutes from the centre of the city the Swan Valley, with its calendar of festivals and events, is a popular destination all year round. The area was settled in the nineteenth century when farmers found it difficult to find uninhabited land near the banks of the Swan River in the city. Many of the charming old buildings in the area have been retained and refurbished, particularly in Guildford. There are more than 40 wineries to visit, from small family-run concerns through to world-famous vineyards; recent years have also seen the establishment of several boutique breweries in the area. You can visit art and craft galleries and workshops, a chocolate or nougat factory and a host of cafes and restaurants. Sandalford Wines Founded in 1840, this is one of Australias oldest, most prestigious privatelyowned wineries. Whilst enjoying an international reputation as one of the states leading premium wine producers, it has been awarded best wine tourism operator in WA three times. Take a tour on suspended walkways, dine indoors or alfresco under 160-year-old vines, or enrol in a wine appreciation class. Located on the banks of the Swan River, Sandalford is just a twenty-minute drive from the Perth business district. Offering luxury river cruises, culinary distinction and world-class concerts and events, this is a must-visit destination, open 7 days (see page 80).

Or try the Swan Valley Lunch Cruise with a buffet lunch served on board before wine tasting at Waters Edge Winery (see page 19). Caversham Wildlife Park Home to many of Australias favourite cuddly animals and exotic birds. With shady picnic areas plus a kiosk, its a great spot to relax while making friends with our unique wildlife. The souvenir shop has CDs, videos, kangaroo skins, carved emu eggs, books, cuddly toys and more. Open every day of the year (see page 21). Whiteman Park Home to the Motor Museum of WA, tram and train rides, a variety of quaint craft shops, a fantastic birds of prey display and much more. Situated in picturesque bushland the park covers an area of more than 4,200 hectares (over 10,000 acres) with nearly half classified as high value conservation bushland or wetland, all just 20 minutes from the city centre. The Nyoongar people inhabited the South West for thousands of years before colonisation

history
Inhabited for thousands of years by the Indigenous Nyoongar people, the area now called Perth has been home to convicts in the past and sun seekers at present, and flourished despite the challenge of being so far from the rest of the country. Ancient Beginnings Australias first inhabitants were Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. They are believed to have arrived in migratory waves from south east Asia between 40,000 and 150,000 years ago, making Australia one of the oldest continents in the world both geologically and in terms of continuous human history. Australias Indigenous people now make up only 1.5 per cent of Australias total population, with approximately two thirds living in cities and towns and the balance living in rural and remote areas. Some of these people still maintain a traditional way of life. Nyoongar people are the original inhabitants of south western Australia and archaeological evidence indicates that the area on which the city of Perth now stands was inhabited by relatively high numbers of Indigenous people for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. The Nyoongar people are traditional hunter-gatherers who enjoyed the abundant food and water found along the coastal plain. Being conservationists by nature they took only what they needed to survive and had a high regard for life and the land. Indigenous Australians believed that their ancestors created the land and were great spirits of the dreaming who controlled the movements of the planets and stars, the seasons and the tides. Aboriginal law and custom evolved from the myths that grew up around these ancestor figures. They also

YOUR GUIDE TO PERTH & FREMANTLE

91 believed that the process of telling these myths whether in dance, song or painting enabled them to draw on the power and influence of their ancestral spirits. In a culture which has no written language their very distinctive art form, which reflects a deep connection with the land and the environment, evolved over many millennia to record the beliefs and stories from the Dreaming, enabling them to be passed on to successive generations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are among the most disadvantaged groups in Australian society today. Many of their problems relating to health, employment, education and general opportunity are directly due to dispossession from their lands and the resulting disruption to their traditional lifestyles and cultures that followed the arrival of European settlers more than 200 years ago. Indigenous Australians are fighting for respect and equality and for recognition as being the oldest living culture in the world. Public awareness of the process of reconciliation has increased significantly in the last decade and all sectors of society are adopting measures to improve relations with Indigenous people and to help us all live together more harmoniously. Indigenous artworks Visit Victoria Gardens in East Perth where you can see the Charnock Woman, a 25 metre pavement mosaic, and Ngango Battas Mooditcher, the Claisebrook bank of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). On Heirisson Island is a statue to commemorate Yagan, a courageous Nyoongar tribal leader, and, in Forrest Place, a popular artwork depicts two snakes fighting. Indigenous artworks are a highlight of the State Art Collection at the Art Gallery of WA in the Perth Cultural Centre. The Aboriginal Art Gallery in Kings Park exhibits the works of artists from WA and the Northern Territory. Aboriginal performers who work in the gallery talk about culture, bush food and medicine from the Nyoongar area. Aboriginal tours Mooditch Tours can take you on a journey of discovery in the heart of the city. Learn about an array of Aboriginal weapons and tools, listen to the spellbinding sounds of the didgeridoo and watch traditional dancing. Find out about the history of Kings Park on a Kings Park Indigenous Heritage Tour. Learn about traditional implements, tools and weapons, bush medicines and bush tucker. 92 European Settlement in Western Australia The first recorded sighting by Europeans of WA was in October 1616, when the Dutch navigator Dirk Hartog landed at Shark Bay near Carnarvon. Von Edels discovered land a little further south in 1618, while in 1619 Frederick Houtman sighted small rocky islands off the coast near Geraldton and named them Abrolhos, meaning lookout. British authorities settled at the Swan River in 1828 and on May 2, 1829 HMS Challenger commander Captain Charles Fremantle raised the British flag at the head of the Swan River and proudly took possession of the territory. Captain James Stirling arrived on his ship Parmelia and, with settlers in tow, founded Perth at a site near the present town hall on August 12, 1829. The Swan River colony experienced initial difficulties including a shortage of labour, financial problems and poor communication. To cope with such problems the British Government sent convicts to Western Australia from 1850 to 1868 to assist with development. The discovery of gold in the 1890s resulted in incredible growth and necessitated the undertaking of many major public works. In 1901 Federation transformed Western Australia from a colony to a state of the Commonwealth of Australia with Perth the designated capital city. Perth today Perth is Australias fourth largest city, home to more than 1.8 million people. It is the capital of resource-rich Western Australia and, as such, the administrative centre for more than one third of the country. Offset by the vast tranquil waters of the Swan River, the beautiful city of Perth is a tourists delight. Modern and vibrant, it contrasts with its historic counterpart the port city of Fremantle, accessible within 20 minutes by car from Perth. Tourists commonly refer to Perth as the friendly city and famous notables have also renamed the city after their personal experiences. Astronaut John Glenn called Perth the City of Lights after his historic flyover in 1962 and victorious Americas Cup skipper Dennis Connor referred to it as the most isolated city in the world. Most people find Perth bright, fun, friendly and laid back (relaxing) but visitors are sure to find their own descriptions after their holiday. For more information drop in to the WA Visitor Centre at 55 William Street (corner of William and Hay Streets), Perth or phone 9483 1111 or 1300 361 351.

Climate Due to the vast size of the Western Australia, visitors will find the climate varies greatly depending on location, ranging from mild, temperate climes to subtropical and tropical zones. The city of Perth enjoys a mediterranean climate, with warm to hot summers and cool, wet winters. It is said that Perth has the climate California thinks it has! With an annual average of eight hours sun per day, Perth is Australias sunniest capital. Summer temperatures average between 29C and 32 during the day and between 16 and 18 at night. However, it is not unusual for summer temperatures to reach 35 for three or four days in a row, especially in February and March. The afternoon sea breeze, known affectionately as the

Fremantle Doctor offers relief to coastal towns during the summer. The highest daily maximum temperatures recorded in Perth are around 44. The average winter temperature is 18 during the day and around 8 at night although it occasionally snows down south, temperatures in Perth almost never fall below 0 at night. Perth averages only two or three days of rainfall in summer, with up to 19 days of rain in July, our wettest month. Occasionally cyclone systems in the north of WA can cause a few continuous days of stormy weather, they rarely come as far south as Perth.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Trains The Transperth train system is a quick and easy way to get around. Perths central city train station is located on Wellington Street opposite Forrest Place and connects to the Underground station for the Joondalup and Mandurah lines. Travel from Perth to Fremantle, Midland or Joondalup takes around half an hour; to Armadale takes around 40 minutes; and to Mandurah takes

less than an hour. Some services are express and do not stop at all stations and services are reduced but regular on weekends and public holidays. You must have a valid ticket to travel. Tickets can be purchased from machines on the platforms. A SmartRider card is a cashfree way to use public transport in Perth, providing cheaper fares on buses and trains. Information on SmartRiders, bus and train routes and timetables can be obtained from major

bus and train stations, or contact Transperth on 13 62 13 for information. To use the Transperth journey planner to find the best route, visit transperth.wa.gov.au Buses Perths city and suburbs are well connected by buses. The main terminals are the Wellington Street Bus Station and the Transperth Esplanade Busport (see Perth city fold out map for locations).

You can join these routes at any of the brightly coloured CAT stops. A complete loop of any of these routes will take 4050 minutes. See the Perth city fold out map for detailed routes with all stops marked or call Transperth on 13 62 13 for more information. CAT buses do not operate on public holidays. The Blue CAT buses travel in a north-south loop from the river through the city. Some of the stops on this route include: London Court, Town Hall, Art Gallery of WA, Northbridge, Barrack Square and the City Busport. The Yellow CAT buses travel in an east-west loop between East Perth and West Perth via the bus and train stations. Some of the stops include: Claisebrook Train Station, Victoria Gardens, Harbour Town and the Wellington Street Bus Station. DRIVING IN WA
Hire Cars WA has a range of rental vehicles at competitive rates. For more details please see our hire car advertisers in this guide. You will need a valid Australian or international drivers license (in English). If you receive a parking or speeding fine in a hired car be sure to tell the hire car company as many of them will charge additional administration fees for recovering the cost of fines incurred on their vehicles. Petrol Many of the larger service stations in Perth are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and most stock unleaded fuel, gas and diesel. Major roads will have fairly frequent late trading stops. If you are travelling to the country it is advisable to check how far you are likely to drive between stations, as they can be up to 500km apart. Driving laws In Australia we drive on the left hand side of the road. Seat belts must, by law, be worn by all persons travelling in a motor vehicle. Posted speed limits must be adhered to. The speed limit in Perth city and suburbs is 50km/hr

unless otherwise signed; major arterial roads are generally 60km/hr and the upper limit in country areas is 110km/hr. Speed cameras are used throughout the state. Western Australia has drink driving laws which limit the amount of alcohol a person can consume before driving a vehicle. These laws are rigidly enforced by an efficient police force equipped with modern, sophisticated radar devices and mobile alcohol detection facilities. The blood alcohol limit in WA is .05. Further information on road rules can be obtained from the Department of Transport on 9216 8000. Road signs All distance signs in Australia indicate distances in kilometres. Roads through areas of significant historic or scenic interest are indicated by white on

brown Tourist Drive markers throughout WA. Parking There is street parking in much of Perth city, but if you will be in the city for more than an hour it is easiest to use one of the many outdoor or multistorey car parks. These car parks clearly display fees as well as closing times check to ensure that your car will not be locked inside if you are staying out late. Also, check that you have enough change if the car parks payment system is automated. Reciprocal disability parking rights exist for interstate and overseas visitors for up to three months; for more information contact National Disability Services on 9242 5544.
