The Columbian Exchange:

A Revolutionary Event Junior Division Renee Wright Junior Division Individual Website

Process Paper

At the beginning of our journey through American History, we did a unit on Christopher

Columbus. Within this unit, we studied "The Columbian Exchange". I was fascinated by the idea that an outburst of people, plants, animals and ideas followed Columbus to the New World. I saw it as a revolution. Once History Day came around, I thought back to the fun Christopher Columbus unit. I realized that this unit would t this year's theme great and that I could use the History textbook for reference. This is how I chose my History Day topic To start my research I went to the Summit Library. I barely found anything under the

name of "The Columbian Exchange", but when looked in our American History textbook, I was on a roll. I found another book on Christopher Columbus and his effect on the Americas. I also searched the internet for "Christopher Columbus effect" and for "The Columbian Exchange" and found many useful results. I ordered 7 books that were great help to me. I also interviewed a man who knew a lot about my topic. He taught me how specic plants and animals were used in the Americas. He also gave me a lot of useful sources many of which he had wrote. This is how I conducted my research. I am a technology person. I use and love computers at least 5 times a day. I knew that I

would be able to make a website and that my topic t one, so I did. I was also reassured by the fact that my dad is a computer guy and he would help me. When I rst started, I was a horrible Weebly user. After a few hours, I was an expert. I looked at random websites to get ideas on how to format mine. I decided to make a chart showing the different groups of people that traveled to Europe. I also found lots of great pictures and a website theme that t my website wonderfully. This is how I chose my format and created my project.

The Columbian Exchange revolutionized the foods around the world. New crops were

planted such as rice, cotton, tobacco and wheat. These crops produced new foods such as bread, rice dishes, wheat products, etc. Also animals like pigs, sheep, cattle and horses were brought over. Horses were used for transportation methods. Pigs were used for food. Sheep's fur was used for clothing. The animals changed the way of life in the americas. This caused a great diversity of plants, animals, people, ideas, etc. This diversity was revolutionary and makes up the Americas. This how my topic ts this years theme.
