65-yr-old woman found dead in her GK-I home

New Delhi:
A 65-year-old woman was Iound dead at her GK-I house on Friday evening. Police suspect
theassailants knew the victim as the entry to the house was Iriendly.
Jogesh was gagged and her limbs were tied, police said.
Police Iound a Iew property-related documents strewn around. They suspect the assailants must
havebeen looking Ior some property papers. No valuables were missing Irom the house.
Police said Jogesh was Iound in the bedroom oI her R-78 house. Her husband, Ajit Singh, was not
athome at the time oI the incident.
Jogesh`s nephew Yuvraj, who works as an assistant manager at an MNC, was the Iirst to Iind her
whenhe returned home around 6.45 pm. He called Singh and a PCR call was made.
Jogesh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
'Preliminary investigations have revealed that she was smothered to death. A case oI murder has
beenregistered, said Ajay Chaudhry, Addl CP (Southeast).
The Iamily has told the police that Jogesh always took precautions while attending to an
unknownperson at the door. 'This shows the entry to the house was Iriendly, said Amulya Patnaik,
Joint CP(Southern Range).
A relative said, 'The Iamily didn`t seem to have any problems with anyone. She was a very
warmperson.







outh gets 10 years in jail for raping two-year-old girl


New Delhi:
A Man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a city court Ior raping and sodomising a two-year-old
girl.
Holding 19-year-old Krishna guilty oI committing the crime, Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau
awarded him an additional seven years in jail Ior abducting the victim. Terming the act 'a glaring
example oI the growing menace oI sexual abuse oI young children, Judge Lau said in her order: 'The
victim was a soIt and vulnerable target. Due to her tender age, neither the body oI the child was Iully
developed nor she was in a position to oIIer any resistance to Krishna. Despite this, the convict went on
to commit the ghastly, abominable, inhuman and barbaric act oI rape, violating the person oI the child
and subjecting her Iamily to liIelong trauma.
The judge ruled that all the sentences would run concurrently. She also imposed a Iine oI Rs 27,000 on
him, stating that the extent oI his brutality was evident Irom medical reports oI the child, who had to be
admitted to a hospital Ior over Iive days. The court decided the case in little over six months aIter the
crime.
Police said Krishna took the child Irom her Iather on the pretext oI taking her out Ior a walk, and raped
her. AIter raping the victim, he allegedly leIt her near her house and Iled Irom the spot.
'The oIIence oI rape worsens and becomes inhuman and barbaric when the victim is a small Iemale
child, who as in the present case was subjected to unwanted physical contact by a perverted male
adult, ASJ Lau said.

Parliament (Majlis) that "this should have no place in
the legal Iramework oI a democratic country", the
island's Minivan news agency said.
While acknowledging eIIorts by the government to promote gender equality, Pillay said that
discrimination against women and girls continued in the country oI 330,000 Sunni Muslims. "A
powerIul illustration oI this trend is the Ilogging oI women Iound guilty oI extra-marital sex. This
practice constitutes one oI the most inhumane and degrading Iorm oI violence against women," the UN
Rights ChieI said, stressing that there should be no place Ior this in the democratic setup.
She told the Island-chain nation's parliamentarians to Ioster a national dialogue "on this issue oI major
concern". Pillay also wanted parliament to pass legislation on domestic violence as well as other laws to
ensure women's right.
Though no exact Iigures were available on the number oI women Ilogged, the Maldivian news agency
said oI the 184 people sentenced to public Ilogging in 2006, 146 were Iemales, making it nine times
more likely Ior women to be punished.
Minivan said that Iollowing a news report in 2009 oI an 18-year-old girl Iainting aIter 100 lashes,
Amnesty International had called Ior a moratorium on such punishments.









Govt to tell HC: Women need helmets as much as men


New Delhi:
The Delhi government agrees that women pillion riders also need helmet Ior protection, as accidents
pose a threat to them just as much as to men.
Ready with a response in the wake oI a PIL asserting that it must be mandatory Ior women to wear
helmets, the government plans to side with the petitioner when the issue comes up Ior hearing beIore
theDelhi High Court on Wednesday.
For larger public saIety, specially Ior women, the government plans to tell the court that it is open to
necessary amendments in the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules, and make it mandatory Ior women riders to
wear helmets.
'We are giving Iinal touches to the aIIidavit that will be adduced beIore the bench oI Acting ChieI
Justice A K Sikri on Wednesday. It is clear that we are not going to oppose the petitioner`s stand in the
case, considering an amendment in the rules concerned would certainly result in more saIety Ior the
women, an oIIicial told Newsline.
He said iI the new rule comes into Iorce, it will not only ensure saIety oI women, but also present an
example Ior the other states.
'It (new rule) will certainly save some lives. One must also remember the importance oI a woman in a
society like ours, where the entire Iamily system hinges on them, he said.
According to the oIIicial, the government would, however, leave the ultimate decision to the court, and
preIers that a judicial directive bring in the required changes in the law.
'AIter we present our stand on the issue, we are going to leave it to the court to guide us. We are Ior
the amendment in public interest, said the oIIicial.
The court had, in the last week oI August, sought a response Irom the Delhi government as to why the
rule providing this exception Ior women must not be struck down.
The court had issued the notice to the government on a PIL by Ulhas P R, a social Iilmmaker, who
sought to draw the court`s attention to the Irequent Iatalities oI women due to a provision oI the Motor
Vehicles Rules.
'When (an) accident takes place, it does not discriminate between men and women and the injuries are
sustained irrespective oI the sex... this rule must be struck down Ior the saIety oI women in Delhi. The
government is bound to lay down a uniIorm policy Ior all the people, irrespective oI their caste, creed,
colour, gender, etc, the PIL stated.
