to make a family tree. My book is entitled New York: A novel. It is written by Edward Rutherfurd and it tells the story of New York through the Master Family. The story starts off in 1664 in New York with the Van Dyck family and the Master family. The members of the Van Dyck family are Dirk Van Dyck and Margaretha Van Dyck, and their children, Jan and Clara.Dirk Van Dyck also has an affair with an Indian woman and they have a daughter named Pale Feather. The legacy that is passed down through this book all the way up until 2009 is a wampum belt that was given to Dirk Van Dyck by Pale Feather. The Masters have a servant whose name is Quash. The members of the Master family are Tom Master and Mrs. Master (her name is not mentioned) and they have a son- Henry Master. Jan and Clara both get married- neither to a Master, but Claras husband died after or during 1685- it does not mention an exact date in the book. That is how Clara then, after some time, married Henry Master. That is also how the whole family in the book came to be known as the Master family. They had a son named Dirk who in turn married and had a son named John. John Master married Mercy Brewster, who then became Mrs. Master. They had a daughter named Susan, a son named James and a daughter named Abigail, in that order. Mercy Master dies of an illness later on, in 1774, although an exact date is again not mentioned and the date of death could have been early 1775 instead. James Master marries a rich English womanVanessa- while he was living in England and together they have a son- Weston- but they break up and after James moves to New York she is only mentioned briefly in letters. Weston is only briefly mentioned after that, and since decades are sometimes skipped through the change of chapters, we know that he also married, had one son- Frank- and many daughters. Frank then marries Hetty Master and together they have a son named Tom. This continues all the way up to 2009, ending with a small chapter where Gorham Master is with his daughter Emma in New York. All through the book you both learn about the history of New York, events such as 9/11, and about the personal lives of people. The reason why I believe that this is an excellent choice for a Generation to Generation book is because it has many different generations, and the relationships between parents and children are greatly detailed. The only disadvantage is that many years or decades are lost from the change of chapters. For example, one chapter ended in 1871, and the following chapter began in 1888, so you have lost 17 years of information. The only other downside of this book is that it is 1017 pages long and that would be very hard for some people to read. Through the duration of the book many true incidents are recorded through fake encounters. One example would be the attacks on the world trade center through Gorham and Maggie Master. Because of all of the above reasons, that is why I chose to make a family tree for my project, because it will be easier for people to see how all of the family names of people changed to Master and how complicated the family is.
