No High Voltage _ Toshiba 20AS24 CRT

Repair Can be seen at my Blog at CRT TV Repair

Repair Completed
My friend brought 2 TV's to me. He is a TV repair newbie also but he mostly does electrical work, like house wiring. Anyway one was for a customer of his and one was for his home. Both repairs were successful and we did it in less than 1 hour. I notice that in this area there is many Toshiba of this type. My friend had told me for many days that his TV at home was giving trouble, and that his wife was nagging him to fix it. However after many hours spent that he could not find the solution. Complaint is that the TV takes long to come on and when it is cold it even takes up to 3 days! He brought the TV and I switch it on. I could see that it has red led light, but the TV does not come on. I immediately sense that it has power so I decided to check secondary diodes and trace voltage from there. Upon inspection of board I see a darkened area by diode D516 and D153 as seen below. I connected the TV to power supply and tested voltage starting with these 2 diodes. To test voltage I connected the black probe to ground. I had adapted a probe specially for this procedure as I had learned from Humphrey Kimathi ebook on CRT repair. I had removed from a normal probe the end and connected there instead an alligator clip. So when I do voltage testing I use only one hand and reduce the risk of electrical shock. Diode D513 tested 11.5V and diode D516 tested -2.13V. This seemed too low to give the 5V as seen on schematic. So I disconnected the TV and checked that all capacitors discharged, and I removed one leg from the diode. I noticed that it read ok. However I changed it, because it was suffering some days without my help. Next I checked the ESR of the capacitor C516 50V 10uF. It tested high ESR. In fact there wasn't even a reading on my meter. I changed this and then connected back

the TV. The light and screen came on. I get from my friend Nohe my gift a high Lumen Flashlight for my repair bench.

See ESR Chart for expected range 50V 10uF Capacitor should be between 1.7 to 2 or less.

Conclusion: I am new to TV repair but I can conclude that if I did not have my Blue ESR meter I would not have even bothered to check this capacitor. So it is seen that a small capacitor like this can cause a TV to not come on. I heard stories about ceramic and I expect to meet one of these soon. I hope I am ready. ________________________________________________________________

The next was from one of his customer and complaint was that a fire in a house in the area had caused the power line to blow up the TV. On opening up the set I checked the power supply area and saw that the fuse was blown. Like my teacher I thanked the fuse for a job well done. However I quickly realized that the inductor was darkened and the plastic slightly molten. I assumed that the inductor was not good but testing with my meter showed continuity. I decided to come back to it later just in case.

On checking I found 2 diodes shorted. out of the 4 forming the bridge. I replaced only the 2 diodes as we have no spare parts and he was in a hurry. The main filter capacitor was also blown and this was changed also. I also quickly checked all components in the primary side and they checked ok. What I did was check that there was no shorted component like capacitors, and that the transistor in optoisolator was ok. The Mosfet tested ok. Below is the schematic diagram.

Conclusion: With regards to the above blown power supply, I recommend that the inductor and all diodes should have been replaced. However it was not up to me. Also the mainfilter capacitor was changed with one that had slightly higher capacitance and

voltage. I learnt that it was ok to change capacitor but that it could be with higher voltage but same capacitance. But this one worked in the power supply.
