STRESS PATTERNS It is difficult to establish rules for the accentuation of simple words in English, so you should learn the accentual pattern of each new word just as you must learn its pronunciation. If you stress a word wrongly, it makes you very difficult to understand. Stress is often more important than perfect pronunciation. In this exercise, you must put each of the words below into the correct list depending on its stress pattern. The sign shows the main stress, and the unaccented syllables or those which only have a secondary accent.
