1.0 Introduction
This is volume 2 of a series of volumes which document what labels and packing lists should look like to conform to the needs of IBM, its business partners, and its customers. A list of all of the volumes in the Global Labeling series appears in volume 1 Overview and General Rules (IBM part number 31L5038). The purpose of this volume is to document the rules by which product package labels must conform. Before reading this volume you should first read volume 1. It contains background information that pertains to all of the volumes in the Global Labeling series.

2.0 Revision history

Date 1999-11-12 2000-6-4 EC Level F84029 F84029B Changes Created as a separate volume. Previously it existed as a separate chapter in the Global Labeling Implementation Guide version 4.0, which existed as one document. 1. Added section 3.2, Ground Rules for the Product Package Label. 2. Provided an example that used Assembled in US of US and non-US components. 3. Added section 4.0, Where to place product package labels. 4. Added section 3.5 Special Country Requirements. 5. Added a second example of an MES label. 1. Changed all labels so that bar code titles met the new font and position rules: Title begins above quiet zone and the value is in a larger font than the rest of the title. 2. Adopt design style of Japan's Mr. Takuji Satoh for depicting the contents of bar codes. This style prints the contents of the bar code in a white box on the bar code. 3. Added three more Personal Computer Division examples and moved all the PCD labels to appendix B. 4. Permit, but discourage, the use of a "combination label" that doubles as both a shipping label and a product package label. Such labels present too much clutter for both shippers and customers. 5. Replaced the country of origin bullets in the "Ground Rules" with a reference to section 6 in volume 1. 6. Added special rules for China. 7. Made small wording change in the comments for the "Country of Origin" data element. 8. Added "System Type" and "System Number" to the data elements table as optional fields. 9. Changed status of "date" from required to optional. 10. Added requirement that UPC code is required on products shipped to certain business partners (e.g. Ingram Micro). 11. Added IBM order number to the example of a software product package label.

3.0 Product Package Label

3.1 Definition
The Product Package Label is a label which is affixed to the product package for a finished good or part. Its purpose is to allo w the customer easy identification of the product and its configuration. It is important to note that this label will contain excl usively product related information and no customer information. Customer information is reserved for the shipping label and packing list which are described in volumes 3 and 4.

3.2 Ground Rules for the Product Package Label

1. 2.
Every product manufactured by or for IBM must have a product package label. It is vital that at least part of the product package label contain information which matches what the customer or business partner specified to order the product. For example, if the product was ordered via "machine type-model and a list of feature codes", then that information must appear on the product package label. This permits the customer or business partner to easily reconcile their order. That is the primary objective of the product package label. (Permissible but not recommended) For products which are shipped by themselves, the shipping label may double as a product package label providing that:

3.

! ! ! 4. 5. 6.

A thick demarcation line is drawn separating the two sections. The product package label section conforms to volume 2 of the Global Labeling Guide (this document). The shipping label section conforms to volume 3 of the Global Labeling Guide.

If it is necessary for security reasons to hide product information during transportation, an overpack (or buff wrapping) may be used, so that only the shipping label is accessible. For details see IBM C-B 0-3700-000 Plain Package Initiative. For build-to-order (BTO), configure-to-order (CTO) and retail products, product descriptive information (e.g. processor speed) should be printed on the label. Unless prohibited for security reasons (previous bullet), product descriptive information should be printed on other products, as well. Serialized products must have the bar codes listed below on the product package label. Note: Consult appendix A in volume 1 to understand what 1P, P, S, 1S, and 11S mean.

! Bar code to denote the product ID.

Use data identifier of "1P". Use data identifier of "S". This is needed for IBM business partners. Use data identifier of "1S" or "11S"as appropriate.

! Bar code to denote the serial number.

This is needed for IBM internal use.

! Bar code to denote the combination of product ID plus serial number. 7. 8. 9.

The product package label must identify the country of origin. Country of Origin requirements are documented in section 6 in Global Labeling Guide volume 1. MES (Miscellaneous Equipment Specification) product package labels must specify the machine type(s) that the MES may be applied against. MES product package labels must identify the feature codes for which the MES was ordered.

10. MES product package labels may specify the serial number of the principal component in the MES. 11. If empty boxes are ever sent to a customer to fill out a pallet or shipping container, each such box shall have a label
affixed that says FILLER BOX in large bold letters. No other labels should be affixed to such a box.

12. Do not leave old labels on containers that are reused. 13. Do not hand write information.

inches (25 mm by 75 mm).

Do not use labels smaller than 1 inch by 3

15. It is acceptable to use preprinted cartons where appropriate. 16. Comply with the country specific requirements as per section 3.5 Special Country Requirements.

3.5 Special Country Requirements

The reader should obtain a copy of IBM Corporate Standard C-S 1-1120-000 Graphics-Basic Packaging, Labeling, and Imprinting for country specific details. Contact IBM Purchasing for this document. Country/Union Canada Requirement details All retail products shipped to Canada must comply with the Canadian Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act and its regulations. In particular:

! All packages used for store display must be marked with the manufacturers name and postal
address. Quebec requires that the primary language be French. Articles being sold in China must have a label which identifies the brand, the plant name and address, the net weight, the gross weight, and the carton size or volume in simplified Chinese on the unit carton. It must also have CCEE (China Commission For Conformity Certification of Electronical Equipment) qualified symbol on the carton. It is a requirement of the European Union (EU) that products carry a Mark of Conformity, commonly called the CE MARK. Affixing the CE mark indicates that the product complies with all applicable New Approach Directives. More details can be found in IBM Bulletin N-B 0-2594-001, Euro-Bulletin, Product Conformity and Certification EU - Legislation and Market Requirements. Per IBM Corporate Standard C-S 1-1120-000 Graphics, Basic Packaging, all products sold in Mexico must have the following data marked on the package:

! All text must be in both English and French.

China

European Union (EU)

Mexico

! Name of product ! Name and address of manufacturer (if made in Mexico) ! or Name and address of importer (if imported) ! or Name and country of exporter (if imported) ! Marking that identifies the country of origin ! Nominal electrical characteristics, if any, (Power consumption, voltage, and frequency) ! Certification, including NOM logo (See Engineering Specification 90G5325), that product
Russia USA conforms to Mexican National Standards (NOMs). Per IBM Corporate Bulletin N-B 3-0501-033, a Russian conformity symbol may have to be applied to the product package label for products sold in Russia. Per IBM Corporate Standard C-S 1-1120-000 Graphics, Basic Packaging, all products sold in the USA, regardless of their place of manufacture, which may contain used parts must have one of the following markings on the package: For all IBM products excluding personal computer products and consumer products, Manufactured from New Parts or New and Used Parts. For PC and Consumer products, Assembled with Used Parts, pursuant to IBM Personal Systems Division Used Parts Practices Guideline.

4.0 Where to place product package labels

Place the product package label in the upper right-hand corner of the side that is most likely to be facing out when the package is placed on a pallet. This will generally be the narrow side. Leave sufficient room from the corner so the label will not be covered up by shipping container packaging material such as corner posts. If the package is large (length+depth+width is greater than 72 inches or approximately two meters), then do one of the following:

1. Apply a second identical label to an adjacent side.

It should also be applied near the right-hand corner.

2. Use a "double label" which wraps around the corner of a box with identical information printed on both sides to
accommodate the "2 adjacent sides" requirement. This has the advantage of guaranteeing that the information on the adjacent sides matches. There is also just a single application process. Note: Such a double label is not a good idea if corner posts are used when the product is palleted.

The 31P bar code is only required if needed by the geography that the product is shipped to. 3. It may be necessary to affix both an EAN/JAN code and a UPC code. This, again, is a geography dependent requirement.
