RENOVATIONS GOING SWIMMINGLY The changes and renovations to the amenities block at Canowindra Pool are going well. Despite the rain the builders have been hard at work gutting, rearranging the internal design and rebuilding. The roof has now been attached and will hopefully be completed early next year, when there should be information forthcoming regarding Council funding for the pool upgrade.

Holidays: This is the last week of school for our lucky Canowindra kids. Debutantes: there are 25 girls wanting to do the Deb Ball next year there will be 2 balls. The dates will need to be altered as the girls would like to have running weeks. Pony: Due to a few clashes and a resulting lack of numbers, the AGM of the Canowindra Pony Club will have to be cancelled, with a view to re-scheduling at another date. Former: Canowindra Public School teacher, Marion Gabbott nee Austin has returned to South Africa. Marion taught 3rd class in the early 1960s and on leaving the town Marion and husband Stephen worked as missionaries in Tanzania and Bangkok. Marion and Stephen have gone to Moshi, Tanzania to assist the local people to obtain a minister for their church, St Margarets. They will be away for 2 years & send their greetings & good wishes to those people who remember Marion. Panthers: Penrith NRL team will be visiting Canowindras Public & High Schools Tuesday 31 January 2012. PROPOSED AMALGAMATION: PART OF CABONNE WITH ORANGE COUNCIL PROGRESS REPORT NO 2 You have probably heard via the press, television or by word of mouth that the Cabonne Eastern Rural Sector (CERS) people handed their submission to a representative of the Minister for Local Government Friday 25 November 2011. On 5th December, 2011 we posted (by registered mail) all relevant documents to the Minister arguing the case against any change to Cabonne Councils local government boundaries. Included in our submission were the following: A covering letter putting our general argument. A summary comparing community consultation undertaken by CERS and this group. A submission detailing the negative economic, political and social effects an amalgamation of any part of Cabonne into another council would have on the entire Cabonne community. Original anti amalgamation petitions signed by 1,663 people. (Copies have been made and are stored in a safe place.) A letter from Cabonne Council estimating costs so far directly related to this matter and possible additional costs if the matter goes to the Boundaries Commission (could be as much as $160,000). Copies of press cuttings from the CWD and Molong Express including letters to the editor. A map approximating the proposed area to be amalgamated. The next step will be for the minister, Mr Don Page, to decide whether to refer the matter to the Boundaries Commission or reject CERS submission outright. As the NSW parliament has risen for the year, we do not expect that there will be any response from the Minister or Department of Local Government until 2012. REGIONAL FILMMAKERS First Break is an initiative of Metro Screen, the leading independent screen learning and development hub in NSW for filmmakers. One of the ten projects selected will be reserved for filmmakers who live in regional NSW. First Break is for emerging filmmakers (both the writer and director must not have a produced screen credit in their respective roles, that has been released, broadcast or screened at a recognised film festival). The applicant may be either the writer/director or a director and writer team where the director has been assigned all rights to the script to be developed and produced through the First Break program. Ten projects of up to 10 minutes duration will be selected with three places awarded to applicants from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent, three places for applicants from a multicultural background and one place awarded to an applicant from regional NSW. Drama, doco, animation, series pilot, experimental, cross-platform will be considered. CABONNE AUSTRALIA DAY Aussie breakfasts at Mullion Creek and Cumnock will kick off a full day of Australia Day activities in Cabonne villages next month. The Mullion Creek and Cumnock celebrations will begin at 8am and festivities will continue throughout the day at nine villages, ending with a 7pm pool party at Yeoval. Cabonnes Australia Day official party will visit Cudal, Manildra and Yeoval, but our national day will also be celebrated in Cargo, Canowindra, Molong and Eugowra. And pool parties will be the theme for all three venues hosting the official party, which will include the Shires Australia Day ambassador. Cabonne Council is expecting its 2012 Australia Day ambassador to be announced in the next few weeks. The official party will travel to Cudal for the Australia Day awards presentation, pool party and musical entertainment from 10am-2pm, before moving to Manildra for more celebrations based around Manildra pool from 4pm-8pm. A kids disco, novelty events and a barbecue will be the highlight of the Manildra activities, while Yeovals celebrations will start with the awards presentation at 7pm and continue with entertainment and a barbecue at the pool. CANOWINDRA PUBLIC SCHOOL We are in the process of class placement for 2012. Students will be told what class they are in on the first day back. This could change in the first week as we are expecting a number of new enrolments, but hopefully it will be fairly stable. The most likely classes will be: Kindergarten B. Mrs Berry/Mrs Toole Kindergarten R. Mrs Rinaldo Year 1/2 New teacher Year 2/3 Miss Dixon Year 3/4 Mrs Jones Year 4/5 Mrs Baratto Year 5/6 Mrs McLaughlan Mrs Watt, Miss Laurie, Miss Clements, Mrs Palmer, Mrs French and Mrs Pengilly will all be teaching in some capacity across the school throughout the year. We have two staff members moving on at the end of the year. Mrs Hargraves has moved to Mudgee with her husbands employment and plans to seek work there. I thank her for her short but productive contribution to Canowindra Public and wish her all the best for her future. Mrs Sevil is taking leave for 2012, pending retirement. She has spent 22 years at this school all as either an executive teacher or assistant principal. Mrs Sevil has been and outstanding teacher who has touched the lives of somewhere between 500 and 600 children at this school. I know Sue is held in very high regard by her students the staff and the community. As well as being an outstanding teacher, she has taken on many additional roles, some as part of the responsibility as an executive member of staff, but many just because she could see a need and wanted to make the school a better place for all. Thanks Sue for all you have done for the school and community, enjoy your retirement. To our wonderful school community, whatever your plans are for Christmas, enjoy your break and have a memorable time with your children.

SWIMMING CLUB Let the trumpets sound!!! Let the band march!!! Amara Flannery took a second off her PB and took out the Spoon in a personal best time of 23 seconds. Yee Ha!!!!! Samuel Brand followed up his Spoon win last week with an absolute smashing of his PB by 11 seconds while Lydia Coady took a remarkable 6 seconds off her best freestyle time. Mitchell Stanley flopped better than 11 other swimmers as he took out the Belly Flop competition. Lane 2 won the swam 15 seconds faster than all others for Lydia Coady, Kaitlin McKay, Talitha Stanley, Nick Jeffrey, Josie Clements, Angus Fisher, Jennifer Holmes, Jake Wythes, Alicia Earsman and Regan Hughes to take home the pennants. This week is the last Swimming Club for 2011, we resume on Friday 13 January.

CRICKETER LEGEND Local High School student and sportsperson Nicole Stevenson has been selected into the CHS Western Region Open Girls Cricket Team after trials held in Dubbo Wednesday 16 November 2011. The Country Championships are to be held in Sydney from 20-23 February 2012 This comes after Nicole was selected in Cricket NSW Regional Emerging Breakers squad for 2011/12 in May this year. Both Addie (BlueStar) and Nicole (Jetset) play in the Canberra Premier League on Saturdays, this is great experience as the girls get to play with the ACT Meteor players.
