NAME__________________________________ DATE_________________ ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS DOES IT PROMOTE NATIONALISM OR INCREASE SECTIONALISM? Compare and Contrast the Northern and Southern economies using a Venn Diagram. Use a (+) symbol for a positive comparison and a (-) for a negative comparison. You should include at LEAST 3 differences and AT LEAST 3 similarities between the 2 economies. Come up with a concluding statement about the similarities and differences of the 2 economies. Follow the template provided on the Long piece of paper. Be ready to share and discuss with the class. NORTH ECONOMY Strengths: 1. The north had just experienced a small Industrial Revolution, and was producing manufactured goods that were mass produced this meant things could be made and sold faster and cheaper. 2. New methods of transportation were being built and used to bring goods to and from manufacturers this included toll roads, canals like the Erie Canal built in New York by DeWitt Clinton to connect the Hudson River to the Great Lakes. 3. A new, national currency was created and used allowing the north to trade with the South and the West. Weaknesses: 1. Poor soil, low crop production, only some livestock. SOUTHERN/WESTERN ECONOMY Strengths: 1. Good and rich soil for plantation farming. 2. Increased productivity because of the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney this increased slavery allowing for the South to have more cotton and make more money. 3. Use of the Mississippi River and New Orleans port for transportation of goods between the North and South economies. Weaknesses: 1. No factories for manufacturing goods. 2. Heavy, intense labor needed to run the plantations smoothly in the South. 3. The economy is similar in the South and West so as the US expands sthe question as to whether slavery should expand begins to create problems. SUMMARY QUESTIONS: 1.Describe the purpose of the proposed AMERICAN SYSTEM? 2.Who do you think would benefit more from the American System the North or the South/West? Why? (use your Venn to assist you) 3. Do you think that this system and the Era of Good Feelings helps to increases sectionalism or promote nationalism?
