HORN ANTENNAS 390 SERIES

CORRUGATED CONICAL HORN ANTENNAS
BROAD BAND/MULTI-FREQUENCY SYMMETRICAL CONSTANT WIDTH BEAMS POLARIZATION FLEXIBILITY DESCRIPTION
A wide flare corrugated conical horn produces nearly constant and equal E and H-plane beamwidths over broad frequency bands. Beamwidths can be 20 to 70 degrees. It also features very low side and cross polarized lobes and low internal losses. A narrow flare corrugated conical horn produces frequency dependent, equal E and H-plane beamwidths over an octave beamwidth. Beamwidths can be 7 to 40 degrees. The corrugations in these horns modify wall impedance to excite a hybrid mode (HE11) and produce an aperture field nearly identical in all planes. Due to circular symmetry these horns will support any polarization.
Listed are five typical designs depicting what can be accomplished with this type of horn. Type 1 is linearly polarized with a step transition to rectangular waveguide input. Type 2 incorporates an orthomode transducer for dual polarization operation. Type 3 is a linearly polarized narrow flare horn which can operate over an octave band. Type 4 is a dualfrequency unit employing a separate orthogonal input for each frequency.

DATA SHEET T65B 4 OF 4

Type 5 is a space-qualified multi-frequency horn operating with dual linear polarizations in narrowband channels at widely separated frequencies. Beams from all ports have nearly equal 10 dB widths, which are ideal for secondary aperture illumination in multi-channel systems. All frequencies and polarizations are isolated from each other and insertion loss is low.

TE11 MODE CIRCULAR WAVEGUIDE PRODUCTS AND CAPABILITIES

RESEARCH / DEVELOPMENT / ENGINEERING INTEGRATED SUB SYSTEMS POLARIZATION DIVERSITY
Microwave Engineering Corporation Circular Waveguide Components are used for the transmission and control of circular waveguide TE11 dominant mode energy and for the conversion of rectangular waveguide TE10 dominant mode to circular waveguide TE11 energy. Further, certain components are used to establish or convert to dual linear and circular polarization. All are available in frequency ranges from 2 to 60 GHz. (Although the circular electric TE01 mode has less transmission loss and is desirable for long straight runs, it is not often used due to its inherent susceptibility to mode conversion and difficulty in launching the mode efficiently). For TE11 operation, the useful range of diameters, D, is 0.7o<D<0.97o whereo is the free space wavelength. This is from about 20% above TE11 cutoff up to TE21 cutoff. Note that the TM01 cutoff diameter is 0.77o, but this is not excited in the components described. Both standard WRC and non-standard diameters are available. Characteristic of all units are their high efficiency, low loss, and excellent match.
Fundamental to most systems is the rectangular-to-circular waveguide precision tapered transition. This may be incorporated with a coax-to- rectangular waveguide adapter to provide a mode-free, full band circular waveguide-to-coax adapter with excellent VSWR. Other standard circular waveguide components offered include straight sections, fixed and sliding terminations, short circuits, conical horn antennas, polarizers, orthomode transducers, and mode absorbers. Polarizers are reciprocal devices used to convert More an incident TE11 modes in circular waveguide. specialized componentry such as corrugated horn antennas which feature low (40dB) side lobes, equal E and H plane beamwidths, and less beamwidth variation with frequency are also available. Total in-house production capability coupled with circular waveguide expertise enables MEC to offer integrated subassemblies for specialized customer requirements with quick turn-around time (e.g. a conical horn antenna with circular polarizer and orthomode transducer). The principal advantages of an integrated subassembly are that performance can be optimized for the application and interactions between discrete components can be eliminated. Other advantages include size and weight reduction. Staff engineers are available to discuss component and system details. Your call or visit is invited.

HORN LENS ANTENNAS

BEAM SYSTERY LOW SIDELOBES LOW CROSS POLARIZATION POLARIZATION INDEPENDENT HIGH BEAM EFFICIENCY DESCRIPTION
MECs horn-lens design consists of a Rexolite lens, fed by a corrugated conical horn in an aluminum housing. The inner surface of the lens contains surface matching grooves to reduce VSWR. The corrugated horn produces symmetrical illumination of the lens with low spillover. The resultant far-field pattern has sidelobes about -25 dB and cross-polarization at -30 dB. Beam efficiency is greater than 92%. Typical VSWR is 1.3:1.

DATA SHEET No. T146

The assembly is mechanically rugged and can withstand vibration, temperature extremes, wind and rain. Any polarization and connector interface can be provided with application of appropriate transducers. Dual frequency performance can also be obtained using a diplexer(e.g. 10.7 and 37 GHz or 6.8 and 10.7 GHz). The table below is a representative sample of MECs available designs of horn-lens antennas. Contact MEC with your specific requirements, stating information such as frequency band(s), size, gain or beamwidth desired, polarization, and any other specs, i.e., VSWR, power, etc.

These assets coupled with power divider and antenna expertise enable MEC to offer integrated sub-assemblies for specialized customer requirements. The Principal advantage is that performance can be optimized for the application and interaction between discrete circuits can be eliminated. Other advantages include size and weight reduction. Following are descriptions of some of these dividers. Each was developed for a specific application and serves to illustrate MECs versatile capability. Staff engineers are available to discuss components and system details. Your call or visits is invited. 32-ELEMENTS MONOPULSE FEED NETWORK This feed network is a dual 32:1 equi-phase L-Band power divider. It has two isolated coaxial inputs: a sum port (), and a difference port ();a 50 dB sampling port is also provided. The illumination distribution at the output ports for both inputs is shown. The power divider is used as the feed network for an electronically scanned monopulse radar utilizing a Displaced Phase Center Antenna. Major characteristics of this experimental system are side lobes at 30 dB and low detection threshold. Achieving the required Power Divider performance depended critically on an accurate power distribution and phase equality. The goals set to attain the desired characteristics were amplitude 0.2 dB, phase 1, and insertion loss under 1 dB over the frequency range. A unique low loss and ultra stable transmission medium was used. Power handling is over 400 W CW and 5 KW peak. All specifications were exceeded; in particular, insertion loss was 0.6 dB.

120-ELELMENT FEED SUB-ASSEMBLY FOR DOME RADAR ANTENNA

Fig. A1 APPLICATION The reduced-height waveguide subassembly (Figures A1 & A2) is part of the power divider network for a multi-element airborne hemispherical coverage X-Band phased array radar. Output ports totaling 2,500 for the complete assembly are distributed to fill a circle approximately 40 in diameter (Fig. B). The power dividers are grouped into discrete subassemblies of four rows each. The 40 disc surface is formed by stacking these linear sets of differing lengths, thus approximating the desired feed aperture. Following is a description of the central sub-assembly; it contains the most elements and is representative of all others.

Fig. A2

Fig. B

FEED DESIGN This power divider contains 120 output ports and 8 input ports. Each row or level (four shown in Fig. D) contains two separate primary waveguides externally fed. The structure is bilaterally symmetric and a liquid cooling channel runs the full length of the row at each level. In each primary waveguide (Fig. E) 15 sets of coupling apertures are machined. The output power profile (Fig. C) is roughly an exponential taper peaking in the center. Fifteen secondary waveguides (Fig. F) lie beneath each primary guide, sharing with it a common broadwall .030 thick. In addition, each secondary has a twosection impedance transformer leading to a phase trimmer output mounting hole. The four levels are staggered relative to each other by a distance of .630 or half the element-to-element spacing thus producing a 30 x 4 checker-board pattern to constitute the diameter of the round aperture. Weight being a prime concern, extensive lightening cuts were made at each stage. The complete sub-assembly measured 38.7 x 5.6 x 1.45 and weighed 5 lbs.
