Pancreatic Cancer
Special Nutritional Needs
Many patients with pancreatic cancer do not Ieel like eating, especially when they are
uncomIortable or tired. In addition, the side eIIects oI treatment such as poor appetite, nausea,
and vomiting can make eating diIIicult.
To keep the body strong, patients should try to take in enough calories and protein to
control weight, maintain strength, and promote healing. Eating Iour or Iive small meals a day oI
high-protein, high-calorie Ioods will help you maintain your weight and your strength. Ask your
doctor Ior a reIerral to a clinical dietitian who can help you plan your diet and address your
speciIic needs.
They may need to take nutritional supplement drinks and nutritional therapy by tube
Ieeding. A Ieeding tube is a medical device used to provide nutrition to patients who have
problems swallowing. The Ieeding process is called enteral Ieeding or tube Ieeding. Tube
Ieeding may be temporary Ior the treatment oI acute conditions or long term in the case oI
chronic illnesses. Feeding tubes are not painIul and are not easily visible when wearing normal
clothes. A dietitian will teach you and your caregiver about nutritional supplements and how to
use and manage the tube.
Patients may be transitioned back to eating by mouth when they are able to swallow. Your
dietitian will help you with this process. Transitioning Irom tube Ieeding to eating should happen
gradually since you will need to consume enough calories, protein, and Iluid by mouth to
maintain your weight.
Managing Pancreatic Enzymes
Pancreatic cancer or the removal oI part oI your pancreas may change the way your body
digests Iood, by aIIecting the exocrine cells oI the pancreas, which release enzymes that help
digest Iats and proteins. You may have problems digesting Iood and absorbing nutrients. To
prevent malnutrition, the doctor may prescribe replacements Ior enzymes the pancreas would
normally make.
Pancreas enzymes come in capsule or tablet Iorm, and you should take them with the Iirst
bite oI every meal or snack, including liquid supplements. Depending on the extent oI damage to
your pancreas, you may need to take pancreas enzymes the rest oI your liIe.
High Blood Sugar
One oI the Iunctions oI the pancreas is to make insulin and other hormones that help
regulate blood sugar. These hormones are produced by islet cells. The pancreas contains more
islet cells than the body needs to maintain normal blood sugar. Most patients maintain a normal
level oI blood sugar even iI halI oI the pancreas is removed by surgery. However, some people
develop high blood sugar aIter surgery Ior pancreas cancer and occasionally aIter receiving
radiation, and may need insulin or other medicine to control this condition.
Preventing Stomach Ulcers
You are more likely to develop stomach ulcers aIter pancreas surgery. Your doctor will
prescribe anti-ulcer medicine, such as omeprazole or pantoprazole, to help prevent stomach
ulcers.
Coping depression
Major depression may be treated with a combination oI counseling and medications.
Several therapies are helpIul in the treatment oI cancer-related depression. Most therapy
programs are oIIered in either individual or group settings and include support groups, cancer
education and classes on relaxation skills, coping, yoga and meditation. Some patients seek
counseling Irom someone who understands liIe-threatening illnesses, such as a medical social
worker, psychologist or chaplain. Patients without obvious symptoms oI depression may also
beneIit Irom counseling.
Gallbladder
1. Diet regulation:
Support into good eating habits, Iasting spicy, thick and greasy Iood deprivation, do not drink

2. The psychological care:
Encourage patients to adhere to a happy state oI mind, conquering conIidence oI the disease,
plenty oI play potential oI the body, so that patients can actively cooperate with treatment and
improve eIIectiveness.
3. Supine rest should be kept in a comIortable supine, generally the leIt lateral position, supine
bit better, to prevent parts oI the gallbladder pressure.
4. Encourage patients to do whatever things to transIer negative emotions, selI-conditioning
mentality, such as qigong, walking, listening to scientiIic knowledge, so that dynamic and static.
5. Close observation oI body temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure changes, to prevent
the occurrence oI complications.
