Tech I Semester (R07) Regular & Supplementary Examinations, November/December 2011 TRAFFIC ENGINEERING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 Define the three basic parameters of traffic and explain the relationship between them through neat graphs. (a) Define different speeds used in traffic analysis and give their importance. Explain clearly the cumulative speed distribution curve and its use. (b) Explain the manual traffic volume counts method. Give its advantages and disadvantages compared to mechanical methods. (a) Define capacity. Explain about the factors affecting the road capacity. (b) Define Service Volume and Peak Hour Factor. Explain the relationship between the two. Clearly explain the parking usage study by Patrolling method. Give the forms used in the survey and also support your answer with neat sketch wherever necessary. At an intersection formed by meeting of North-South road and East-West road, a three phase signal with exclusive right turning phase from North and South is to be designed. Each of the North and South approaches have exclusive right turning lane and two lanes of 3.50m for straight and left flows. The radius of right turning is 20m, Right turning from East and West is not permitted at the intersection. The total width of East-West Road is 12m. The traffic flow in pcu/hour is as follows. From North East South West To E S W S W W N E N E Flow 60 600 150 60 400 160 600 150 80 500 Assume amber of 3 seconds and intergreen time of 4 seconds. Give the phasing diagram and timing diagrams for each phase adopting Websters method of isolated signal design. 6 (a) Explain the classification of traffic signs and give at least two examples for each type. Give also the specifications for each type. (b) Describe about different types of Pavement marketing.
