1.0 Over view of the Industry The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development manufacture marketing and sales of motor vehicle. Companies and activities involved in the manufacture of motor vehicle, including most components such as engines and bodies, but excluding tires, batteries, and fuel. By allowing consumers to commute long distance for work, shopping, and entertainment, the auto industry has encouraged the development of an extensive road system, made possible the growth of suburbs and shopping centres around major. The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide. It is estimated that over one hundred thousand patents created the modern automobile. However, we can point to the many firsts that occurred along the way. Starting with the first theoretical plans for a motor vehicle that have been drawn up by both Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton. In 1769, the very first self propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot, 1725-1804. Cugnot used steam engine to power his vehicle, built under his instructions at the Paris Arsenal by mechanic Brezin. It was use by the French army to haul artillery at a whopping speed of 2 mph on only three wheels. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minute to build up steam power. The steam engine and boiler were separate from the rest of the vehicle and placed in the front. The following year 1770, Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle that carried only four passengers. In 1771, Cugnot drove one of his road vehicles into a stone wall, making Cugnot to get into a motor vehicle accident. During the early history of self propelled vehicles both road and rail road vehicle were been developed with steam engines. Cugnot also design two steam locomotives with engines that never worked well. Steam engines added so much weight to vehicle that they proved a poor design for road vehicles; however, steam engines were very successfully used in locomotives. Historians, who accept that early steam powered road vehicle were automobiles, feel that Nicolas Cugnot was the inventor of the first automobile.

2.0 HISTORY OF TOYOTA In 1933, Toyoda Automatic Loom Works created a new division devoted to the production of automobiles under the direction of the founder's son, Kiichiro Toyoda. Kiichiro Toyoda had travelled to Europe and the United States in 1929 to investigate automobile production and had begun researching gasoline-powered engines in 1930. Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was encouraged to develop automobile production by the Japanese government, which needed domestic vehicle production partly due to the worldwide money shortage and partly due to the war with China. In 1934, the division produced its first Type A Engine, which was used in the first Model A1 passenger car in May 1935 and the G1 truck in August 1935. Production of the Model A passenger car started in 1936. Early vehicles bear a striking resemblance to the Dodge Power Wagon and Chevrolet, with some parts actually interchanging with their American original. Although the Toyota Group is best known today for its cars, it is still in the textile business and still makes automatic looms, which are now computerized and electric sewing machines which are available worldwide. Toyota Motor Co. was established as an independent and separate company in 1937. Although the founding family's name is Toyoda, the company name was changed in order to signify the separation of the founders' work life from home life, to simplify the pronunciation, and to give the company a happy beginning. Toyota is considered luckier than Toyoda in Japan, where eight is regarded as a lucky number, and eight is the number of strokes it takes to write Toyota in katakana. During the Pacific War (World War II) the company was dedicated to truck production for the Imperial Japanese Army. Because of severe shortages in Japan, military trucks were kept as simple as possible. For example, the trucks had only one headlight on the centre of the hood. The war ended shortly before a scheduled Allied bombing run on the Toyota factories in Aichi. After the war, commercial passenger car production started in 1947 with the model SA. In 1950, a separate sales company, Toyota Motor Sales Co., was established (which lasted until July 1982). In April 1956, the Toyopet dealer chain was established. The following year, the Crown became the first Japanese car to be exported to the United States and Toyota's

American and Brazilian divisions, Toyota Motor Sales Inc. and Toyota do Brasil S.A., were also established. Toyota began to expand in the 1960s with a new research and development facility, a presence in Thailand was established, the 10 millionth model was produced, a Deming Prize and partnerships with Hino Motors and Daihatsu were also established. The first Toyota built outside Japan was in April 1963, at Port Melbourne in Australia. By the end of the decade, Toyota had established a worldwide presence, as the company had exported its one-millionth unit. With high gas prices and a weak US economy in the summer of 2008, Toyota reported a double-digit decline in sales for the month of June, similar to figures reported by the Detroit Big Three. For Toyota, these were attributed mainly to slow sales of its Tundra pickup, as well as shortages of its fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Prius, Corolla and Yaris. In response, the company has announced plans to idle its truck plants, while shifting production at other facilities to manufacture in-demand vehicles.

Most companies create strategy base on the companys mission, vision and goals. It is because; end of the day, strategies is to reach the companies missions, vision and goals. Some companies change the strategy each year according to the latest threats in the industry that the company is involved into.

In Toyota, their main concern is to become the number one automotive manufacturer in Malaysia. Although Toyota cars are the number one selling cars in the non national cars in Malaysia ,the companies total industry volume is only 500 cars which is 8% each year is sold in Malaysia .Toyota is working hard to increase the volume of the companies cars sales every year. Other than the above Toyota is also concern to increase their market share To face these three main things, the company has come up with a few but solid strategies, which will make their customers satisfied and happy with the service and the product and adding more features in the car which Toyota is manufacturing. Customers satisfaction is very important for a company to maintain and attract more new customers to use their product or services. Talking about the technology, Toyota fitting new and advanced technology in their cars. As we all know Toyota is back supported by number one or leading manufacturer in the world Toyota motors Japan. Example of the technology used in the some of the Toyota car is the capital VVT-i engine the VVT-i is based on the principle of maximizing performance by matching the timing of the engines air intake and exhaust to the drivers situation- idling, acceleration, passing and cruising.

Three main advantage of driving with a VVT-i engine are: More power- by optimizing valve timing, the engine delivers powerful torque at low to medium engine RPMs. This continuous optimization provides smooth acceleration every time. Better fuel efficiency- The VVT-i uses fuel more affectively and keeps wastage to minimum. Cleaner exhaust with the more efficient combustion that the lowers the exhaust emissions, the Toyota vehicles is more environmentally friendly while improving engine performance.

The engine manifold intake and exhaust have been reserved in the VVT-i engine. The intake is in the front and the output is in the rear of the engine. The improve efficiency, reduces intake noise and shortens the distance to the catalytic converter.

7.0 SWOT Analysis SWOT Analysis, is a strategic planning tool used to evaluate the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objectives of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favourable and unfavourable to achieving those objectives. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a research project at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from fortune 500 companies. The aim of any SWOT analysis is to identify the key internal and external factors that are important to achieve the objectives. SWOT analysis groups key pieces of information into two main categories: Internal factors- the strengths and weakness internal to the organization. External factors- the opportunities and threats presented by the external environment. The internal factors may be view as strength or weakness depending upon their impact on the organisations objective. The factors may include all the 4ps as well as personal, finance, manufacturing technological change, legislation and social cultural changes as well as changes in the market place or competitive position. The result are often presented in the form of a matrix. SWOT Analysis is just one method categorization and as its own weaknesses for example, it may tend to persuade companies to compile list rather than thinking about what is actually important in achieving objectives. It also present the resulting lists uncritically and without clear prioritization so that, for example, weak opportunities may appear to balance strong threats. It is prudent not to eliminate to quickly any candidate SWOT entry. The importance of individual SWOT will be revealed by the value of the strategies it generate. A SWAT item that produces valuable strategies is important.

7.1 SWOT Analysis of Toyota Company Strength New investment by Toyota in factories in the united states and china saw 2005 profit rise against the world wide motor industry trend. Net profit rose 0.896% to 1.17 trillion yen, while sales were 7.3% higher at 18055 trillion yen. Commentators agued that this is because the company has the right mix of product for the market that it serves. They focused on marketing segmentation, targeting and positioning in number of countries. In 2003 toyota knocked it rivers ford into third spot to become the world largest car maker with 6.78 million units. The company still behind rivals General Motors with 8059 million units in the same period. Its strong industry position based upon the number of factors including a diversifying product rang, highly targeted marketing and a commitment to learn manufacturing and quality. The company makes a lager rang of vehicles for both private customers and commercial organisation from the small Yaris to large trucks. The company uses marketing techniques to identify and satisfy customers need. Its brand is household name. The company also maximises profit through efficient manufacturing approaches to total quality management. Weaknesses Toyota is a big company which has its own problems. The world market for cars is in a condition of oversupply and so car manufactures need to make sure that it is their models that consumers wants. Customers have to wait for a long time before a new car can be ordered for example, the latest Toyota Camry customers have to wait at least 6 month to get the car. This because the volume of the car ordered is not much and it is expensive manufacture the car in low volume. The company imports the car from Taiwan or Indonesia. This is the main reason why it takes months for the customers to get their cars. Opportunities Lexus and Toyota now have reputation for manufacturing environmentally friendly vehicles. Lexus has RX400 hybrid and Toyota has it prius. Both are based upon advance technologies developed by the organization. Toyota is to target the urban youth market. The company has launched its new Aygo. Which is targeted at the streetwise youth market and captures the nature of dance and DJ culture in a very competitive segment? The vehicle itself is unique convertible, with models extending at their rears.

Threats Products recalls are always a problem for vehicle manufactures. In 2005, the company had recalled 880,000 sports utility vehicles and pickup trucks due to faulty front suspension systems. Toyota did not give details of how much the recalls would cost. The majority of effected vehicles were sold in the United States, while the rest were sold in Japan, Europe and Australia.

8.0 Competitors Volkswagen On May 28th, 1937 the "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" company is founded, and on September 16th, 1938 it is renamed "Volkswagenwerk GmbH". In early 1938, in what is today Wolfsburg, work begins on construction of the Volkswagenwerk plant which is to house production of the new vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche. During the Second World War Volkswagenwerk's production is switched to armaments. Some 20,000 forced labourers, prisoners of war, and later also concentration camp prisoners, work at the plant.

In September 1998, in recognition of the events of that time, VOLKSWAGEN AG established a humanitarian fund on behalf of the forced labourers compelled to work at Volkswagen during the Second World War. By the end of 2001 more than 2,050 people in 26 countries had received humanitarian aid from the fund. Furthermore, a Memorial in remembrance of the forced labour employed at the Volkswagenwerk plant is currently being established at Wolfsburg, involving contributions from present-day Volkswagen apprentices. On February 17th, 1972 Volkswagen breaks the world car production record: with 15,007,034 units assembled, the Beetle surpasses the legendary mark achieved by the Ford Motor Company's Model T, popularly known as the "Tin Lizzy", between 1908 and 1927.

Chevrolet Chevrolet was co-founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant. Louis Chevrolet was a race-car driver, and William Durant, founder of General Motors, had been forced out of GM in 1910; he wanted to use Chevrolet's designs to rebuild his own reputation as a force in the automobile industry. As head of Buick Motor Company, prior to founding GM, Durant had hired Chevrolet to drive Buicks in promotional races.

15

Chevrolet first used its "bowtie" logo in 1913. This logo is said to have been designed from wallpaper Durant once saw in a French hotel. Another theory of the design of the mark is that it is a stylized version of the shape of Switzerland or a stylized version of the cross on the flag of Switzerland, Louis Chevrolet's birthplace La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchtel, Switzerland). See Flag of Switzerland. In 1915, Durant made a trip to Toronto, Ontario to determine the possibility of setting up production facilities in Canada. After meeting with "Colonel Sam" McLaughlin, whose McLaughlin Motor Car Company manufactured the McLaughlin-Buick, it was agreed the Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Canada, operated by McLaughlin, would be created to build Chevrolet cars in Canada. Three years later, the two Canadian operations (Chevrolet was by then a part of GM in the United States) were purchased by GM to become General Motors of Canada Ltd. By 1916, Chevrolet was profitable enough to allow Durant to buy a majority of shares in GM. After the deal was completed in 1917, Durant was president of General Motors, and Chevrolet was merged into GM, becoming a separate division. In the 1918 model year, Chevrolet introduced the Model D, a V8-powered model in 4-passenger roadster and 5passenger tourer models. These cars had 288in 35 hp (26 kW) engines with Zenith carburetors and 3 speed transmissions. Famous Chevy models include the large and luxurious Impala (1958) and the innovative air-cooled rear-engine Corvair. Chevrolet had a great influence on the American automobile market during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet. The basic Chevrolet small-block V-8 design has remained in continuous production since its debut in 1955, longer than any other mass-produced engine design in the world auto industry, though current versions share few if any parts interchangeable directly with the original. Descendants of the basic small-block OHV V-8 design platform in production today have been much modified with advances such as aluminum block and heads, electronic engine management, and sequential port fuel injection, to name just a few improvements over the 54-model-year design life of the engine concept to date. The small block Chevrolet V-8 is used in current production model (2008) Impala sedans, a variety of light and medium duty Chevrolet trucks, and the current generation Corvette sports car. Depending on the vehicle
16

type in which they're installed, they are built in displacements from 4.8 to 7.0 litres with outputs ranging from 180 to 638 horsepower (476 kW) as installed at the factory. It will also be used as a performance option in the forthcoming (2009 model year) revival of the Chevrolet Camaro. The engine design has also been used over the years in GM products built and sold under the Pontiac. Oldsmobile, Buick, Opel (Germany) and Holden (Australia) nameplates. Recently, 6-litre, 400 horsepower (300 kW) versions of the small-block V-8 designed initially for the C-5 and C-6 Corvettes have been installed in factory-built high performance versions of the Cadillac CTS sedan known as the CTS-V.

9.0 Conclusion Toyota is a leading manufacturer company in Malaysia. It has 35 outlets in the country. Although there are not much outlets as their competitor the company produce 80,000 cars each year. Compared to Indonesia it is much more less, where Indonesia produces 1.7 million each year. This is due the population level of both the countries. Indonesia have more population than Malaysia. As mention in the report, Toyota is back supported by the Toyota Motors Japan, the No.1 car manufacturer in the world. The technologies and the technical support are fully provided by the company. The technology used is more advanced than any other automotive manufacturer. By having the support of the HQ will achieve their goals by year 2010
