More than meets the eye!

New Directions for 2012 and beyond
By Jenny Byrnes
We plan to make a difference in your life. The visible signs of the CTM are in the events and program offered throughout the year - workshops, courses, exhibitions and events. These aspects of the CTM can be found highlighted in the 2012 Calendar on the back cover of this pamphlet. The difference we plan to make is, however, founded on more than such events and opportunities. The deeper, long-term work of the CTM is about cultural change through resourcing conversations, influencing leadership practices and assisting the presbyteries, congregations, agencies and individuals to engage the challenges and delights which are there for us in ministry. This means our work needs to be about strategic planning and partnered conversations, about creating strategic learning environments for resourceful leadership to emerge, underpinned with robust theology, a resilient faith and a capacity for imagination and flexibility. There is urgency in this task, as well as the need to stay faithful in providing good quality theological and ministerial education. We are to be bold in opening the windows of our hearts and minds to engage with the different voices which are being heard around the church. This is not a journey or challenge that the CTM faces alone - we need

Can you ever have too much wisdom!

By Jenny Byrnes
The answer is of course never! And once again the opportunity to feast on the wisdom available to us in the scriptures, in stories of faith and in our experiences is before us in 2012. What is Wisdoms Feast? It was initiated in 2006 as the vehicle by which the newly formed CTM was launched. Primarily a gathering which focuses on the richness of the faith through scriptures, theology and dayto-day experience, it is a feast of input, reflection and activities designed to stimulate and nourish each of us for our life of faith. In 2008 the CTM hosted a second Feast at the CTM and then last year went regional, taking place in both Norval and Shepparton. In 2012 the CTM will continue the tradition - this time in the Bendigo region and we want the whole synod to come! Note it in your to do list for 2012 Bendigo, Wisdoms Feast - 25, 26, 27 May. A Friday night with shared menu of learning and reflection, a Saturday full of good things to get your teeth into: lectures, workshops, activities, and the Sunday a dispersed community worshipping in various local settings.

Where next? Pathways into ministry

By Rohan Pryor
Finding our pathway through life is essentially a life-style of discernment rather than a one-off decision. Even Jesus earliest disciples needed discernment after their often impulsive decisions to drop their fishing nets or their tax returns. Jesus modelled discernment at every turn, between pathways that led to death, or to life (even life through death). Each disciple of Jesus is engaged in the ministry of Christ and the mission of God in the world. In our own lives as disciples there do come times when a more intentional reflection on a specific direction is needed, when choices need to be made between several options or opportunities. This is often the case in discernment around our vocations and ministry, whether as lay or ordained leaders. Finding support and encouragement as well as the facts and possibilities are all essential aspects of such a time of discernment. For lay leaders considering future ministry options, entering the Period of Discernment is a time when the support, encouragement and possibilities can be explored in partnership with the Church. Some will sense their pathway, call or vocation, is in the workplace or community as a teacher or farmer or in another role as an intentional expression of Gods love amidst the world. Others will sense a call to specified ministries of the Church, with a focus on developing communities of faith, the worship of God and the nurture of disciples in their various engagements with the world. Discernment Days provide opportunities to explore some of these possibilities with experienced leaders, both lay and ordained, and to understand more about the opportunities and support available through the Period of Discernment. These days also provide an informal chance to share with others who are passionate about the evolving nature of the Church in Australia and around the world.

Integrated learning...
By Katharine Massam
Christmas and Easter are public festivals in Australia as well as holy-days that celebrate Christianitys most distinctive and radical beliefs. Next Easter, participants in the new UFT subject Introduction to Theological Studies will explore the conversation between faith and life in Melbourne, reflecting on Easter services at a range of churches, as well as celebrations from other times and other places. Designed as an intensive, the central story of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ will be the focus of input and discussion for five mornings in February, and then two follow-up Saturdays in March and April. The new subject is an initiative of the Uniting Church Theological College, and flows from discussion about how to make theological study both accessible and relevant to a wider range of people. This is the first time that a subject like this has been offered as an introduction to theological study, with Chris Mostert, Sean Winter and Katharine Massam bringing together questions from a range of theological disciplines. The team of lecturers will open up biblical, liturgical, historical

and doctrinal dimensions of Easter faith. We dont often get a chance to collaborate like this, across different subject areas, Katharine Massam said, so its exciting, and already we can see the integrated approach will give people a chance to pursue important questions. If you would like a clear introduction to what the Biblical writers say about the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, why and how Christians pray this central story, and how the Easter story has shaped Christian understanding of who God is, then this class will provide both resources and a forum for exploring further.

Like the new companion subject, Introduction to Ministry Studies, the new Introduction to Theology suits people returning to study after a break, or who may not have studied formally before. It also offers training in academic skills such as using a library and writing an essay. Introduction to Theology runs 9.30-1.30 on 13-17 February, and 9.304.30 24 March, 28 April, with a site visit on 8 April. It is available through the UFT for credit towards a degree or diploma, or for audit. Enrolments close on Monday 6 February 2012. Financial assistance for life-long learning

Throughout 2011 the CTM has supported individuals to attend, and presbyteries to deliver, workshops, continuing education opportunities and training for particular leadership roles. There are a variety of funding sources for different needs. Some are sourced from bequest funds others from the general budget of the CTM. There are grants and scholarships available for continuing education for Ministers, for theological study overseas and in Australia, education for lay ministry and leadership, youth, and leadership training for ministry with children and families. The Regionalisation Fund was established to assist in education and training for those living in the rural areas of the synod. In 2011, close to $19,000 was distributed from the Regionalisation Fund comprising approximately $5,500 to assist courses/ programmes being run in Tasmania, Western Victoria and Gippsland; $2,000 to assist six individuals to attend workshops in Melbourne, and $1,000 to assist in the purchase equipment for a rural presbytery. Through the Continuing Education Grants fourteen ministers were assisted in participating in educational/ missional opportunities within and beyond Australia. Up to $10,000 is available for distribution each year. The CTM Reserach Foundation provides modest funding for research that will contribute to the churchs thinking about matters of public importance, usually undertaken as a partnership between the UCA and other synod agencies and partner organisations. The Kirk Robson Theology and the Arts Memorial Fund, established to assist the conversation between theology and the arts, exists to support creative initiatives of emerging artists and artists in residence. The CTM plays a valuable role in engaging with younger generations. This role is about identifying, developing and delivering learning opportunities and experiences that can assist individuals, leadership teams, congregations and presbyteries in engaging both contextually and effectively in this ministry. Responding to and implementing ideas and challenges from the recent Synod and Assembly Reports in relation to ministry with Children & Families and Youth & Young Adults, forms a significant part of this vital work. Some of the fantastic opportunities available for leaders, ministers, ministry agents, volunteers and, indeed, anyone engaged in ministry with younger generations, include the

Challenged to serve
By Drew Hanna
St Stephen was a man embodying grace and power who accepted the challenge of serving God by caring for people in the early church in Jerusalem. It seems entirely appropriate then, that an Order in which the challenge of service to God is accepted and then expressed through service to others should be named in his honour. The Order of St Stephen, a national program of the Uniting Church in Australia and open to any person over 18, is unique in enabling participants to take time out to engage in a year of service designed to assist them in reflecting on lifes direction, their individual faith and, ultimately, undertake an exploration of what service to God may mean for their lives. The program sees applicants or candidates, as they are known during the period of service assigned to a placement which placing great importance on the development of those gifts as the placement progresses. Robyns story is a testament to this fact. Upon completion of her placement at the Church of all Nations support agency, Robyn reflected on the way in which building relationships with women has seen her touched by their resilience and courage, and at the same time recognized her sense of gift development. 'The OSS time has given me an opportunity to reflect on where God may be leading me in the future and has enabled me to use my gifts in a new way', she said. 'My twelve months as an Order of St Stephen candidate has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.' While the Assembly has national oversight of the Order, information and specifics of the program may differ from Synod to Synod. See http://ctm.uca. edu.au/pages/order-of-ststephen

'My twelve months as an Order of St Stephen candidate has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.' may be completed over twelve months full time or two years part time. With previous placements including engagement with in d ig e n o u s c o m m u n it ie s , refugees, local churches and justice and mission projects, the potential for candidates to be allocated a position which aligns with individual skill and passion is high this is the way its designed whilst still

Lay worship leaders in training

By Rohan Pryor
Interested to learn more about the Bible and theology at an introductory level? Join a supportive small group for two fun-packed weekends and youll also complete an intensive module in lay ministry. Each module includes practical skills related to proclaiming Gods good news, leading worshipping communities and preaching. Completing four modules covers most of the training for accreditation as a lay preacher. These Lay Ministry Intensives are competency based and use multiple methods of learning and assessment including reflections, journaling, group and individual presentations, film, workshops and lectures. The diverse learning modes keep everyone engaged; often students hardly notice theyre learning! Some pre-reading is required, and assessment tasks are completed both during and after each module. Modules offered in 2012 include an introduction to the Old Testament, and Talking Faith, an introduction to theology in the Uniting Church. This course is foundational for lay preachers, worship leaders, mission workers and people engaged in other forms of Christian leadership. The course acts as an introduction to Christian thinking about God and explores how faith is understood in the Uniting Church in Australia, with a particular focus on regular worship services in the community of faith. More information about Lay Ministry Intensives and Lay Preacher training are available at http://ctm.uca.edu.au/ LayMinistryIntensives or from Rohan Pryor, (03) 9340 8816.
