FALL/WINTER 2011

Vacant Property Call to Action 811 48th Place NE

In the wee hours of April 8, 2011 a massive fire swept through 811 48th Place NE, an abandoned house that has been a nuisance for years in the community and on the block. The fire damaged the house next door. The house fire also injured several firefighters. One first responder spent months in the hospital and continues rehabilitation. The fire was ruled arson and a suspect, Maurice Dews, is in jail and awaiting trial. Dews is linked to several arson cases in NE DC and Maryland. While the criminal case seems to moving forward the case to condemn and tear down the burnt shell is languishing. The house creates an eyesore, brings down our property values, and impacts our public safety. 811 48th Place NE is providing a hiding place for illegal drugs, firearms, and just sending a message of negativity. WE CANT STAND FOR IT! The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) is sitting on the case, refusing to condemn 811 48th Place NE and scheduling the building to be torn down. TAKE ACTION: CALL REUBEN PEMBERTON, DIRECTOR OF VACANT PROPERTY & CONDEMNATION, AT 202-4424332 OR 202-834-6880. DEMAND 811 48TH PLACE NE BE CONDEMNED & SCHEDULED FOR DEMOLITION BY FEBRUARY 1, 2012!

Election Year 2012: Commissioner Brown Retires

After working with neighbors for nearly eight years, 7C04 Commissioner Sylvia C. Brown will not run for reelection in September 2012. Commissioner Brown started out as secretary and then president of the Deanwood Citizens Association. Shes served as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for two terms. Commissioner Brown jumped head first into the political and civic arenas of Ward 7. She organized a community drive-through of Deanwood concerns with then-Mayor Fenty. Deanwood was targeted for a sidewalk, curb, and alley construction blitz because of the drive-through. For over twenty years residents had been promised these most basic transportation infrastructure components. Brown also testified numerous times at the DC Council and lobbied the Ward 7 Councilmember and DPR officials to protect the $33 million dedicated to the Deanwood Community Center and Library. Most recently she was able to get two affordable housing duplexes built at 4609, 4613 Gault Pl NE for two Deanwood families. Brown says about her last year, I will not be letting up in my last year as ANC Commissioner. I will capitalize on the wonderful examples neighbors and I have working together better. Initiatives in the works include a public safety and cleanliness campaign at Eastern Ave-Sheriff Rd-Division Ave, bringing residents, businesses, the city, and churches together for community economic development plans, and improving participation in various community meetings, especially the monthly Commission meeting, the MPD 6D meeting. Feel free to call Commissioner Brown at 202-398-5100 or email anc7c@verizon.net.

COMING SOON
Wal-Mart, Inc. is making plans to build a store at East Capitol Street NE and 58th Street NE (Capitol Gateway). The land, which is 10 acres, belongs to the DC Housing Authority. The private development partner is A&R Development. Wal-Mart is only one store planned for the 10 acres but it is a big part. Mayor Gray has pledged a Community Partnership Initiative with WalMart. Capitol Gateway, however, will be governed by the planned unit development (PUD) process, http://tiny.cc/dqvvb. The PUD process allows for greater community input and implementation of a legally binding Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). Do not fall into the trap that this is a done deal! Stay positive, ask questions, get involved, be a part of the progress and growth of YOUR community!

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission 7C is YOUR voice and representation! Join us the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at 5109 N.H. Burroughs Ave. NE (Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church).

Are you or a neighbor having trouble with an unpaved alley, litter on your block, or illegal activity? Join the Get em Up campaign! Our calls for service to 311 and 911 are low. Because of that we do not get the attention and money we need. The Get em Up campaign means calling 311 and 911, recording the service request number and the date, and following up in 10 days. Weve got to have the paper trail to back up our concerns for safety. GET EM UP!!
