SAMPLE QUESTION 1 Choose any one of the novels that you have studied. Write why you would recommend this book to a friend. SAMPLE QUESTION 2 Write on one of the themes of the novel you have studied. Give two pieces of evidence from the text to support your answer. SAMPLE ANSWER QUESTION 1 : One novel that I truly enjoyed reading and would recommend to a friend is Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R.L. Stevenson. It is a fascinating story about a brilliant scientist, Dr Jekyll, who concocts a potion to transform himself into his evil side, with its own body and is known as Mr Hyde. With that, he is able to live dual lives. I would recommend it mainly because it explores a very interesting theme, the good and evil sides of man. In this story, this issue is explored through the characters of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Through the use of a drug, Dr Jekyll is able to separate his good and evil sides. Thus, he is able to lead a sinful and wild life as Mr Hyde, and at the same time, retain the respect and reputation he enjoys as the virtuous, pleasant and charming Dr Jekyll. This is something real that all of us have to deal with. All of us grapple with the issue of good and evil in us. However, the story also teaches us that ultimately, we are responsible for all our actions. In dealing with our good and evil sides, we must never forget that we bear the consequence of all our doings. We see this in the case of Dr Jekyll. At first, he was able to share in the pleasures of Mr Hydes evil pursuits and remain blameless. He did not feel he needed to be accountable for Mr Hydes wrongdoings. In the end, however, he was unable to control the desires of his evil side, Mr Hyde. When Mr Hyde took his life, he not only killed himself, but both of them. It shows that we cannot pretend to live separate lives of good and evil because we are actually one person. It is better to learn how to deal with this problem, otherwise, evil will sooner or later catch up with us and destroy our lives. Because of these reasons, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was a true joy to read.

SAMPLE ANSWER QUESTION 2 In the novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the main theme is the struggle between good and evil. This struggle is a constant battle that happens within ourselves as well as with others. The internal struggle between good and evil is clearly seen in Dr Jekyll. A part of him is the kind, respected doctor. On the other side is Mr Hyde, the part of him that enjoys evil and sinful pleasures. The two forces are always at odds, trying to compete to show which the dominant force is. However, Dr Jekyll is unable to control his evil side and soon that part of him overpowers him. In the end, he takes his own life. This struggle between good and evil is also evident between good and bad characters. Here we can see Mr Enfield, an example of a good character, confronting Mr Hyde after he tramples on the little girl, Edie. He is responsible enough to make sure that Mr Hyde does not get away with the act. Through the novel, this eternal battle between good and evil is portrayed through the characters. It is a battle everyone goes through. The message here is not to let evil overpower good and take control, like in the case of Dr Jekyll who finally had to admit defeat to the more dominant Hyde.
