Breaking news
The New Zealand International Arts Festival is the gift that keeps on giving. Death Cab For Cutie has just been announced to play at the inaugural festival, much to the delight of just about anyone who likes music. The Ben Gibbard fronted quartet has been one of the most influential alt and indie rock groups since the bands conception back in 1997. Death Cab are also playing shows in Australia, but those have sold out quicker than bottled water in the Sahara. The one-off New Zealand show will be held at the Wellington Town Hall on Wednesday 29 February, following the two Bon Iver shows (also part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival). Tickets are available from Thursday 22 December through Ticketek and range in price from $38 plus booking fee and upwards for those slightly better seats. And on that note, well be back in the new year with more good news to get you in your groove.
Groove Guide is New Zealands leading weekly music and entertainment publication. 10,000 free copies are available every week at music stores, cafes, fast food outlets, nightclubs, bars, restaurants, cinemas and retail stores throughout New Zealand. Bond Street Bridge just cant seem to sit still. It wasnt enough that they toured around the country in the big cities, the small regionals and everything in between, so theyve announced another 10date tour with buddies in arms The Broken Heart Breakers who have just returned from playing shows in Europe for a year. The bands will play throughout January to early February in Nelson, Wairau Valley, Christchurch, Oamaru, Dunedin, Greymouth, Wellington, Paekakariki and Auckland. Special guests joining the bands along the way include Delaney Davidson, John White, Matt Langley, Rosy Tin Teacaddy and Luckless.
Brooklyn art/performance collective Men have announced one very rare performance at Aucklands 4:20 in February. Proud Mary and Strange News are bringing Men in February, but thats not the only good news. Spring Break will be supporting the Brooklyn-based art-house at the oneoff show. Spring Break being the duo of Ryan McPhun (The Ruby Suns) and James Dansey (The Sneaks). New Zealand born but Sydney-based DJ and artist Fanny Burney will also be featuring on the night. One of the latest pop sensations has announced her first ever New Zealand show. Jessie J will be performing one show at Aucklands Vector Arena on Tuesday 28 February. The self-described Disney-chic singer has made gained some serious popularity over the past year, and after beginning her career as a songwriter for the likes of Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, that credit is well due. Her debut single Do It Like a Dude was released in late 2010 and garnered her international fame and saw her land several top ten spots on charts around the world. Despite only having one album, Jessie J has of course been likened to the new wave of female pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj et al. Clearly the singer isnt content with just one career, as she is also a coach and mentor on television show The Voice UK. This will be the first time for Kiwi fans to see her locally. Tickets go on sale Friday 23 December through Ticketmaster.

Auckland venue Cassette Nine has hooked up with Big Day Out organisers to initiate the Cassette Live Art Installation at next years BDO. If youre the artistic type (much to your parents dismay) then this should be right up your alley. Most any piece of work can be submitted as long as they are inspired by the iconic festivals 20th anniversary. Whether this is an act that has played over the past 20 years, that special song you fell in love with at the green stage or even that time you took too much acid and tried to climb the loop de loop to get a better look at Bjork, the Cassette crew wants to see it all. Hit up Cassette on Facebook or email art@cassettenine.com with a bit of bio about yourself, some
examples of your work and a rough sketch of your vision of the installation you would want to be a part of the big day.

The last day of the Heineken Open goes down in Auckland as were treated to two of the top 10 players in the world face off against each other. Thats actually really premature as this is being written in mid-December, so maybe its unknown facing each other. Who knows. But tennis is cool.

I have many wives musically that is, quips Tommy Lee. hes kicking back on his tour bus, parked on the outskirts of Detroit, michigan; taking a few calls and mixing some beats in his makeshift studio set up in the back. For a man with a police record, alimony demands and a clich history of rock debauchery, hes coming over pretty laid back and professional. Currently on tour with electro-genius Deadmau5, Lee is enjoying playing to an intensely critical club crowd with his musical partner aero. Its a kind of pilot/co-pilot working relationship, he says. aero lays down the beats and I do the visuals, some drums and some native instrumentations [referring to guitar, drum and piano licks]. General admission may not be familiar with this side of the notorious drummer of 80s legends mtley Cre, but Lee claims hes always been a closet dance music fan. yknow, every drum solo Ive played live has some loops or beats, and Ive used samples for as long as I can remember. DJing is a far cry from the roller coaster drum solos of his act with the Cre, but his love of invention still comes through. Studios are way different now, too, he muses. Originally Id be in there, like 24 hours to get one rhythm track down. Thousands of hours and dollars! Thing is, with a laptop I can record anywhere now. you know, I just completed a track all the way through, while sitting on a commercial flight across the States. and another on a charter. Insane! Back in 99, Lee cobbled together rap-rock-metal act methods of mahem (mOm) with a host of an unusual suspects: Beastie Boys mix
master mike, Fred Durst, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan (The Crystal method), Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, LiL Kim and even George Clinton. at that time I was bored, he reflects. I heard stuff in the clubs and was inspired to switch musical gears, create, freak out. I left [mtley Cre] for a bit to explore, you know? Im always hungry for good music. Thats why I agreed to do stuff like [reality show] Rock Star Supernova. mainstream Tv was so dull, music was dull. Shit like American Idol. Ive always had this mix-it-up philosophy: Keep it movin! That was the agenda behind mOm; to shatter the preconceived ideas notions of what popular music. eventually aeRO took a spot on the mOm tour and instantly formed a bond with Lee. Both have been collaborating on a menu of dirty, annihilating beats and searing hot riffs since. DJ aeRO (aka Chester Deitz) sharpened his incisors on the early 90s La rave scene spinning hip-hop discs, inspired by DJ Jazzy Jeff, Barry Weaver, Doc martin, and eventually joined West Coast crew The heavyweights, a collective featuring DJs for Snoop Dog, everlast, KORn and Dilate Peoples. This new years eve Lee and aeRO will headline the new earthtonz music Festival near Gibbston valley Winery in Queenstown, along with Crystal method, DJ muggs (Cypress hill), The Freestylers, heatbox and minuit. Lee is pumped about the location. I Googled it it looks frigging amazing. you better be ready to party - bring your hi-heel nikes!

If 2011 has been one musicians breakaway year, its safe to say Merrill Garbus, aKa tUnE-yarDs can take that award home. This year saw the release of her sophomore effort w h o k i l l which stole the hearts of critics and opened up a fresh new fanbase for the New England native. and no one has been more surprised about that reception more than the artist herself. Ive been really stunned by the response to the album, says Merrill. During the recording process I really had to keep my head down and focus on finishing the album. anytime I thought about what people were expecting, or what might happen with the music after I finished it, I would get farther and farther away from feeling good about the work. One of her most popular songs Gangsta has been a top ten hit on radio stations, blogs and audience playlists around the globe. Its by far the best representation of Merrills meticulous production, but also gave her a lesson in mixing 101. When I first started mixing the album myself, I was using software that I didnt understand... In fact, that was the most time-consuming thing.
Did it ever become a chore? albums just take a long time, and at a certain point you wish you never had to listen to a song ever again. I programmed some of the drum patters on Gangsta and that took a long time... But thats not a chore, thats the nitty gritty of the work which makes me want to get up in the morning. as well as being one of the new underdog darlings of the critics-choice scene, Merrill has been an active voice in the wider Occupy movements. Its one of the first times I can remember in my lifetime that people are taking this kind of initiative to change the systems around them. The 80s and 90s in the Us were pretty complacent times in this country, specifically for middle-class white folks, which was the world I grew up in. But her time in New Zealand will be less political and more experiential. While she promises to learn more about the country before she arrives, Merrill says shes excited to learn about Maori culture. Other than that, she knows were an island way, way down there. I say that the best way to learn more would be to get some Kiwi friends. she seems on board. Yep, 2012 is the year of new friends, didnt you hear? so if you want to jump and play in the tune-yard, just use Merrills own advice and give her the ultimate friendship pick-up line: Youre a badass.
DEcKED hEaD-TO-TOE in black, pleats and frills aplenty, heavy eye shadow and plump red lipstick, thick bangs hang down over matching silvertone guitars: the result is a unified troupe of cooler-thanthou young ladies, who really do look like they should be in a band. aesthetics have never been more important than the music I write and we play, but they have always been part of the deal, says head honcho Dee Dee, otherwise known as Kristen Gundred. My whole life I grew up idolising artists and bands who captivated [audiences] with their look and attitude as well as their music more Ramones than Ronettes in terms of that. apt, then, that she should mention two geometrical and musical polar opposites, but the comparison sticks because its near impossible to even take a passing glance at all four Dum Dum Girls onstage and not think of a glorious age when Phil spectors groups ruled the charts with his confrontational and wildly successful formula: cute girls in tight dresses singing euphoric songs amidst a backdrop of sheer sonic indulgence. formed in california nearly four years ago whilst Gundred was drumming for Grand Ole Party, Dum Dum Girls career has been marked by steady rises and expected progressions through the industry albeit on Gundreds own terms.
I work at a pretty steady trajectory so it seems appropriate Im not looking to be a one-hit wonder or a trend that explodes and then dies. I want to make a life of this. Better to build a foundation and go from there. cue a deal with sub Pop, surely a haven for genre-defying pop music. and it seems Dum Dum Girls have found a home they feel comfortable in, especially if Only In Dreams is anything to go by. Their second full-length hails Gundreds sheer unabashed and uncontrollable talent as a songwriter; it simply spews forth soaring pop hit after soaring pop hit, each and every one coated in a shimmery, relentless, indeed Ramones-y sense of energy. But after three EPs and two albums worth of a trusted, tested formula, somebody mustve told Gundred to stop for two seconds and rest, because coming Down found somewhere close to the end of the album - is the musical accompaniment to a long, slow descent in to long-needed sleep, and by far her most accomplished track to date. On whether shes looking forward to Dum Dum Girls reaching New Zealand shores, Gundred his optimistic. Of course, she says, aside from the excitement that always accompanies playing a new city, I have such a romanticised, foreign, tropical idea of this region. Needless to say, were looking forward to them landing just as much.

The year
when it gets to the end of the year, all you can ever think about is one thing how damn quick it went. You were sure that there were some great memories, but for the life of you, you just cant remember them. Is that irony? Or is irony SO 2010? These are the people and the memories that have made 2011 what it is in pop culture. The albums youve loved and the names youve heard. The lifespan of entertainment is short-lived and fickle, but notables have shaped the past year the way they have wanted. Our panel of contributors lay out their standout memories from 2011, and take joy in what they can before the world explodes in 2012. Thanks to Alexander Hallag (AH), Chris Pole (CP), James A. Robins (JAR), Jan Maree (JM), Justin Fowler (JF), Sam Wieck (SW) and Kevin Kartun (KK).

If were talking locally, Beastwars have made metal more than it has ever been in this country. But by breakaway we mean someone who has truly broken through the barriers. Being in the bottom corner of the world is a big enough barrier as it is, but that didnt stop one man from taking his music to the world. David Dallas gets the keys to the car that will drive him into the sunset as we await eagerly for the next chapter in his story. Sorry, Naked and Famous, you got last year. AH: Beastwars. Cp: Delaney Davidson is getting some deserved attention, Panther and the Zoo self-released a great album, and Street Chant are going from strength to strength. JAR: Can we just hand every award of this kind to Flying Nun? JF: Even though she ditched us I guess that goes to Kimbra with a sweet break-up song, an Aria and all. kk: Diana Rozz. Just because they released their EP ages ago is no excuse for forgetting them.

It truly is the golden age of television. Producers and networks are taking risks that are paying off. Comedies are funnier, dramas are tenser and period shows are in full swing. But who would have thought that dragons would take the world by storm? Game of Thrones has taken the world by storm, and we just cant wait for the second season. Still, there have been other shows you just couldnt miss, havent there? AH: Mad Men. Cp: Definitely Treme. JAR: Boardwalk Empire. No competition. JF: Hillary Barry is the standout TV show of the year. JM: Community. So funny. So. Very. Funny. Sw: The Colbert Report by virtue of consistency. kk: The Venture Bros. Thanks for addressing the bureaucracy we always wondered about in the superhero/superscience racket, guys. Its the smartest cartoon out there.

well have to give this one to a month-long celebration. Nunvember reminded us why we love the Flying Nun label oh-so much, and brought us days upon days of gigs all around the country. Congratulations Nunners, youve earned every grey hair these 30 years have given you. AH: Rhian Sheehan at The Mercury Theatre or FMP 4. Cp: Makeshift venues have been bizarre in Christchurch this year, so catching Lawrence Arabia in a library and Liam Finn in a tent started to seem more normal than weird, but Ive got to give props to The Subliminals and The Clean. JAR: The National. Powerstation. In tears before they even played a note. JF: Lovefoxxx spat on me at BDO and I loved every moment. Sw: Disasteradio at The Kings Arms. kk: Im saying this preemptively, but I know its going to be Guitar Wolf.

One Of the go-to shows of the season, we caught up with Six60s lead singer Matiu Walters to find out how to make a gold-certified album and what you can expect to see when they get up on your stage. Walters says Six60 formed just short of five years ago while studying at Otago and the bands name comes from their second year address on Castle Street. they created a makeshift studio and released an eP in 2008 the show starts there. they started a facebook page and it went viral. Walters describes their 2011 success of having a gold-certified album and getting on the tour circuit as cool. It doesnt seem like anything different. Weve had a few milestones, like playing homegrown. theres a vibe that were a lot busier. Walters describes the band as A bunch of different guys with different upbringings and influences. Youd think that would make songwriting difficult, but for Six60 it makes the process a lot easier. their sound isnt pigeonholed; its a lot like an iPod Shuffle. how people listen to music is how we write, Walters explains. When I sit down and listen to music I dont just exclusively listen to rock. the lads are teaming up with rising Dubstep sensations Mount eden, who theyve had a bit to do with in the past for a
tour around the festival tracks. Its a party atmosphere Walters says fans should expect energy, expect a show, expect a good time. We love playing shows. Catching the music bug during an intimate show at the St James to James Brown and adding Stevie Wonders control of the audience and AC/DCs ownership of the big stage to his favourite live experiences, you get the feeling Walters is a man all about the show and putting on a good one at that. Adding a couple of new songs to their summer set list, Walters is looking forward to the festivals. Possibly getting to meet some big names. At Rhythm & Vines we get to share the same stage as Grandmaster flash and Pendulum. Mangawhai is also looking pretty important. Its the opening show so that will set the standard. Its also a bit of a home show for Walters, who has a lot of family in that neck of the woods. the other side of new Years is looking to be just as big for Six60, as theyre currently setting sights on a world tour. We want to play as many countries and as many bars as possible!

GReG SAunIeR IS the drummer in a band that has often been referred to as one of the greatest bands of all time. Deerhoof has been around for roughly 15 years, depending on what incarnation of the band youre thinking of. Greg is the drummers drummer. When it came time to interview him, I asked a friend of mine (a die-hard Deerhoof fan since way back) if he had any genius questions hes been dying to know. Said friend told me It would just be drum nerd questions. But in Gregs words, there is no such thing as a drum nerd. If you play the drums you are automatically cool. Arent I right, drummers? Back in the mid 2000s, director Justin theroux asked Deerhoof if the band would work with him on his film Dedication. Justin was a fan and approached us and we hit it off immediately... I really savoured the challenge of marrying sound to image but Im not sure Id want to get that tangled up in that corporate spaghetti again. All those adversarial relationships and grumpy nineto-five-ers. But its not their film work that theyre famous for. fifteen years and 11 albums gets you noticed, but it also means theres time to reflect and reconsider the songs youve already made. Greg says that he doesnt sit around listening to his own records, as he has heard them
too many times while I was making them. Yet the beauty of performing live gives bands the chance to rework their songs in any way they see fit. My favourite stuff to play live is from the new album [Deerhoof vs. Evil]. But all our live versions are pretty different from the record versions, were like a Deerhoof cover band. As anyone whos been to a Deerhoof show can tell you, the band does not take themselves seriously. Look at any live footage or see some press shots you wont be seeing four people standing plainly next to a wall. I ask who Greg would like to work with outside of the Deerhoof realm. I can do a really good Keith Richards imitation and a good Charlie Watts imitation so if the Rolling Stones are ever one engine down I am their man. fun. Its the best (if not the simplest) way to describe anything Deerhoof happens to be involved with. When the likes of the flaming Lips, Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, Sleigh Bells and many more cite them as influences, you know that theyre a band who know how to make an impression. And while they may be used to playing the likes of All tomorrows Parties, highline, Coachella et al, they still somehow manage to find the time to make it down under. nZ is no epcot centre but dont sell yourself short. We love it there.
