May the God of peace ... equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen
(HEBREWS 13:20-21/ NIV).

For years these verses have been a source of encouragement for me because they assure me that God will equip me to do His wilL I have certainly felt His equipping in the arranging of these carols. I believe the ideas came from Him, and I praise Him for the privilege of sharing them with you. One way the Lord has equipped me over the years is by providing excellent piano instructors. I am greatly indebted to Miss Helen Wright/ retired piano instructor from Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, Alabama. "Miss Helen" taught me that classical music can be played to glorify God if your goal is to glorify Him through your playing. Her godly example has taught many students how to worship Christ at the keyboard. I am also deeply indebted to another former teacher: Mrs. Verna Mae Felts/ professor of music at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. The solid classical background she gave me has served as the springboard for many of these arrangements. She taught me techniques that turned my note playing into real music. I also wish to thank my husband/ Darrel, who (washed laundry! fixed meals') encouraged/ prodded/ and prayed for me during the weeks of arrangIng.
It is my prayer that God will use these arrangements to equip you to

share the true meaning of Christmas-the through our Lord Jesus Christ.

salvation available

I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the

people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord (LUKE 2:10B-11/ NIV).

JESUS: My good friend, Gail Tobey, lives

ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH: My friend, Lyn Ludington, collects angels. It is only natural that I give her this unique angel to add to the others. COME, THOU LONG-EXPECTED

on an island off the coast of Maine. The only way to reach her home is by boat. Gail has often waited in expectation for winter weather to break sufficiently to allow for safe passage to the mainland for supplies. I dedicate this song to her, a true follower of the Lord Jesus and a true friend. This hymn tune, HYFRYDOL, is also used for the nonseasonal hymn "Our Great Savior." Feel free to use this arrangement at times other than Christmas. Most arrangements that I have heard of this carol are syncopated and jazzlike in style. I have deliberately chosen to arrange this in a quieter, more worshipful mode. I use the flowing style of one of my favorite legato melodies by Chopin. Play it with smoothness and feeling.
GO, TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN:

is particularly special to me. God has often used music to minister to me in times of pain or loss. It was in just such a time as this that God placed this merging of pieces in my heart and mind. As I developed it over a period of several days, He ministered to my heart and brought a healing that only He could give. Our good friends, Greg and Carol Roy, were real encouragers at this time. I dedicate this song to them. The lovely minor key of Chopin's Nocturne melody serves to remind me that God often uses the sad hardships and disappointments in our lives to create things of beauty. So be encouraged to "see Him" and experience His presence and strength in every circumstance, even the sad ones. I have found that Christ can truly turn sadness to joy!
SOME CHILDREN THE FIRST NOEL: When learning a new arrangement, if I find an arpeggio

SEE HIM: This arrangement

or chord progression too difficult at tempo, I modify it, being careful to maintain the sense and flow of the arrangement. Feel free to do that with The First Noel. I believe it is one of the more challenging pieces in this collection. If, for instance, all the grace notes hinder you from executing these passages smoothly, omit some. Make any adjustments you need in order to feel comfortable in performance. The beauty of this carol will come forth when you play it with confidence.
