Thank You!
The entire Orbx development and testing team would firstly like to thank you for purchasing FTX AU GOLD, the second in our series of terrain scenery for Flight Simulator X. AU GOLD is a relatively compact but incredibly diverse region of Australia, encompassing South East Queensland, which is a VFR flyers Mecca and the heart of the aviation industry in Australia. We hope you enjoy flying in FTX AU GOLD region as much as we did making it.

First Things First

Lets get flying shall we? Installation of FTX AU GOLD should only take a few minutes and theres nothing for you to tweak or fiddle with. When you run the flightsimstore.com e-commerce unwrapper which you downloaded or received on CD, just provide your serial number and the FTX installer and library configurator automatically runs. Once the installer has completed, you can simply start FSX and begin to enjoy a whole new world before your eyes. Where can you fly? FTX AU GOLD covers the region in Australia shown in gold on the map below. Two more regions are due to be released for Australia well before the end of 2008. Once you cross the region boundaries outside AU BLUE and GOLD you will see default FSX terrain and textures, (unless you have other addons or landclass installed). FTX wont interfere with the operation of any other addons you may have installed, as long as you remember to use FTX Mode OFF when flying outside any FTX region.

We want you to enjoy FTX immediately, so heres an unusual bit of advice we suggest just loading up FSX and start exploring. Everything has been setup for you so you can just choose your favourite aircraft and enjoy the scenery. Try starting from YRED (Redcliffe), a GA airfield north of Brisbane, which will soon get a major photoreal upgrade in the v1.2 FTX Freeware pack courtesy of developer and beta tester Heiko Glatthorn, a.k.a Mango. Weve nicknamed this location Mango Field in his honour If you find you are having any performance issues or want to know more about how to do certain things, you can come back to this user guide and read through the performance settings and also find out more about the team behind FTX, hotfixes and service packs, the FTX user community and how to get your technical support issues resolved quickly and easily.

Well see you back here in the User Guide later ok?

FTX Mode Explained

Most of the files Orbx have created for FTX live inside the ORBX folders in the FSX root directory. However there are a few files that Orbx needed to replace in the FSX folders in order for our unique technology to function correctly. Dont be concerned though, because any files weve replaced are securely stored in a backup folder and you can revert to your pristine FSX condition at any time using a little program called FTX Mode After running the AU GOLD installer, you will notice that this icon has appeared on your desktop:

This is a shortcut to the FTX Mode application. After installation of AU GOLD, FTX Mode has already been switched ON for you, so youre all set to fly. The purpose of FTX Mode is to allow you to quickly and simply switch between our custom Orbx files and your normal FSX files. If any of the files we replace had already been modified by you (or other scenery developers addons), then thats fine, because weve backed them up first. Running FTX Mode usually takes about 2-3 seconds at the most.

When should you use FTX Mode? Before flying in an FTX region run FTX Mode and set it [ON] Optional - When youre done, set it [OFF] However, you can usually just leave FTX Mode set to [ON] always, unless our modified files interfere with other addons or scenery. We have tested this extensively and find even with FTX Mode [ON] most other scenery is not adversely affected. Youll need to test it for yourself in your favourite areas. If youre installing other addons, such as Ultimate Terrain X (UTX), or custom landclass files, or anything that may want to change your default FSX files, we strongly recommend that you quickly turn FTX Mode [OFF] before running ANY other addon installers.

Recommended FSX Settings

Now that youve perhaps enjoyed a few flights in FTX and want to tune the simulator for the best performance both for visuals and frame rates, we suggest a few settings as per the guide below. Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with todays modern hardware, will for most people result in very poor visuals and performance. FTX will generally perform the same if not better than the default FSX. We recommend the following settings based on our testing.

Terrain and water These have less of an impact than you may think. Generally Level of Detail and Mesh Complexity can be maxed out; your mesh should be set to the resolution of your mesh files, and texture resolution to 1m. Water effects dont improve past High 2.x, so leave that there if your PC has a graphics card which supports Shader 2.x or above. Some users report that Mid 2.x has no real negative effect on visuasl but gives better frames. Scenery Objects This is a key area. Scenery complexity can be set to Dense, or set to Extremely Dense. Your Autogen Density sliders are one of the most key settings in the simulator. We recommend: Large cities Normal to Dense (Dense if you have a faster PC, Very Dense if its an uber one) Rural areas Dense to Very Dense. (Extremely Dense if you have a faster PC) Wilderness or heavily forested areas Dense to Very Dense

Orbx FTX AU GOLD Version 1.0 User Guide May 2008

Page 5

The importance of the Autogen Density slider cannot be emphasized enough. The difference in the Brisbane city area for example, between Normal and Extremely Dense autogen can be a threefold reduction in your frame rates. We recommend that you begin with Normal and try increasing it one level until performance drops to the point of stuttering. Then drop it back a notch and youve found you PCs sweet spot. Ground Scenery Shadows Turn these off. They kill frame rates and also have unpredictable visual results, The FTX ground textures include shadows underneath trees and beside a lot of buildings already.

Road Vehicle Traffic Set road vehicles at about 6-15% for FTX. We have bi-directional traffic on all roads, so you can effectively halve the density youve been used to. A high road vehicle traffic setting not only creates a very unrealistic road appearance but also has a huge impact on frame rates. FSX automatically increases traffic densities on freeways depending on population density and dawn/dusk, and we find that 5-15% is the best setting for realism and also good frame rates.

Aircraft Traffic Set airline traffic and GA at your desired settings, however keep in mind that a high setting for airline traffic at major international airports will always adversely affect your performance. Find a balance that works.

Ships and Boats/Ferries Shipping and boating is purely to taste, but again, keep them below 50% for the best realism. Again, be sensible with these sliders if you find performance is suffering, try sliding these back as your first option.

Now to the all-important graphics settings. Set a realistic FPS locked target on our Orbx development laptops 22-25 works well, and in some cases where blurries are not an issue (like night flying), setting FPS to Unlimited can improve the FPS, but you will get some slight stuttering though. Generally the rule is: Locked target frame rates will give crisper textures, no blurries, but slightly less smoothness Unlock target frame rates will provide smoother, more flowing flights, but you will see textures blurring more quickly and also notice the occasional stuttering in the simulator

Full screen (ALT+Enter) or Windowed mode? With FSX SP2, running full-screen with nVidia 7xxx series graphics cards causes constant crashes to desktop (CTDs). The work-around is to run in Windowed Mode, but with the window maximized. This has proven to be an effective mode to use SP2 in, and the Orbx staff are so used to it now, we rarely run full-screen anymore.

Screen Resolution Go for the highest 32-bit screen resolution your monitor allows and set filtering to Anisotropic.

Anti-Aliasing Strangely on our nVidia equipped Orbx Dell laptops, we turn Anti-Aliasing OFF, because the nHancer control panel can override the FSX AA settings which are AAX8, and instead we use and recommend AAX4S. However, on our Quad Core QX6800 desktop benchmark PC, we find that we need to check the AA box to activate it. Try both settings to see what works best for you

Orbx FTX AU GOLD Version 1.0 User Guide May 2008

Page 7

Global texture resolution This should be cranked to max (or very high we found no visual difference in quality when set to high, but got slightly smoother flights),

Light Bloom Ah good old light bloom! Use it only if you have the grunt, but our opinion is that the visual difference is too marginal to justify the frame rate hit.

Lens Flare My real-world sunglasses dont produce lens flare. But my camera sometimes does. Personal taste

Advanced animations Always leave this on.

Weather Lastly, the weather settings. Use your personal preferences, but the above screenshot shows our recommended settings if using the default FSX clouds textures. As always, with weather, try using custom weather setting that minimize Cumulus clouds, as the default Cumulus are real frame rate hogs.

Tweaking fsx.cfg (Advanced Users Only)

Generally, when Microsoft released FSX SP2 (or Acceleration Pack, which contains the same SP2 fixes), there was less need to spend time tweaking and fiddling, and more time to just enjoy flying. The major change in SP2 was a more efficient autogen batching system and better support for dual or quad core CPUs. The four tweaks below are the most we would recommend to tweak to fsx.cfg; digging too deep and playing too much with obscure settings can in the end adversely affect performance rather than enhance it. Where is your fsx.cfg located? From Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, type in this string: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\ This will locate and open the folder when the fsx.cfg is located. TIP: Right-drag the file to a handy location and save a shortcut for it. If not already assigned, make Notepad the default application to open it. That way, just double-click on the shortcut to edit your fsx.cfg Once you have fsx.cfg open in Notepad, find the [section headers] shown in blue and add the entries below them. Note, [JOBSCHEDULER] is a brand new header which has to be added in manually. [TERRAIN] TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=2000 TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1700 Notes for above: This is the setting most of the Orbx development and testing team use. Some of us even lower buildings to 1000, but I recommend 1700 as the "sweet spot". I even use this for my screenshots and videos. It may seem that limiting trees and buildings will affect the visual quality, but if you consider that FS9 only had a maximum of 600 trees and 300 houses per cell, it's a massive increase and in 99.99% of cases will still give you very full forests and cities. You will still get great tree coverage with the value set as low as 1500 - it's really a matter of trying some values to see how it looks for you visually.

[SCENERY] SmallPartRejectRadius=2 Notes for above: This little tweak tells FSX to not draw any objects in the distance which are smaller than 2 pixels wide. This can save on FPS also, particularly on approaches to airports in urban/city areas.

[Main] DisablePreload=1 Notes for above: This will simply avoid pre-loading the default flight and makes for quicker FSX startup times.

[JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=3 (for dual-core PCs) AffinityMask=14 (for quadl-core PCs) Notes for above: This tweak just tells FSX to distribute the load away from a single core of a multi-core CPU PC, which mainly helps with the loading and management of texture and autogen caching. You will see more benefit from this tweak with quad-core CPUs.

General Tips For Flights

When in Virtual Cockpit, cockpit or external views, pull the zoom back using the "-" (minus) key all the way to 30% This view may not be to everyone's taste, but it has the effect of making all the ground textures much, much crisper. With todays widescreen monitors it also provides a realistic field of view. This may not apply to everyone, and may contradict earlier advice in this user guide, but sometimes setting frame rate to unlimited can provide for smoother flights, but at the slight expense of some blurring and the occasional stutter. This is the opposite experience to FS9, where locked frames always performed best. This also works best since FSX-Acceleration/SP2. Try this for yourself to see if it helps add some smoothness. SHIFT+ O (not zero, but the letter O) allows you to look around using your mouse in most views, and simulates head movement. Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out on areas of interest. The "-" (minus) key held down is a simple way to zoom back out more quickly. Try to keep your Windows desktop resolution the same as that used by FSX. Believe it or not, running FSX at the highest resolution your monitor and video card combination can support, will yield better visuals and smoother frame rates than bringing your screen resolution down to an artificially lower value. Unless you are trying to avoid the nVidia 7xxx series menu-crashing bug introduced by FSX-SP2, always run in full-screen mode for the best performance. Press ALT+Enter to switch between windowed and full screen mode. When exploring FTX for the first time, dont be in a rush and whiz across the landscape in your fastest aircraft at 500 knots. Grab the microlight motorized glider and press the S until the view changes to directly behind it. Press and hold - to zoom right out, then use SHIFT+O to freely look around. Crank up the throttle with F4 and swing your mouse from side to side as if to move your head. Youll be amazed how much fun it is using that combination. Give it a try! Pressing "Q" (Sound off) will give you some FPS back, but of course at the expense of total silence! Perhaps a nice mode to fly with when youre listing to your MP3 player. Disable your Anti-Virus program while running FSX. At Orbx we use NOD32 AV, which allows us to "exclude" the FSX folder from virus checks which avoids each file being processed by the AV engine during loading and flights. If you are worried about security, just pull out your internet connection cable (unless of course you are relying on it for real-time weather etc). Nvidia Users: Orbx highly recommends the nHancer utility for tweaking your nVidia card settings. You can grab that utility from www.nhancer.com each setting on the applications interface has a section devoted to explaining what the tweak does. Very handy indeed.

Give the above tweaks a try and you will find FTX a smoother more enjoyable experience, and in some cases, you will be able to drag the autogen density sliders further to the right.

The 3D Lighting System

FTX uses a new 3D lighting system developed by Orbx and exclusive to our products. This system creates multi-coloured lighting for all roads in urban areas and major roads in rural townships. The lighting system is also implemented as autogen in the textures themselves, so you will find cities are depicted very accurately and you can actually see towns approaching during night flights over remote areas. During the development and tuning of the 3D lights system, we found that the size of the lighting effect, and the halo bitmap created vastly different results from one testers PC to the next. On some PCs the lights were huge, and on others too small and had no visibility range. We also found issues with Windows XP versus Vista, and nVidia cards versus ATI. Therefore to provide you with the most flexibility, we decided to create a special little program called the FTX Lights Tweaker, which will allow you to tune both the halo style and the effect size for the lights. To access this application, from the Start Menu, select the Orbx program files group and then the FTX Lights Tweaker application. The interface looks like the screenshot below.

Theres not a lot to it. You select one of six halo effects (each has a description and a summary of its pros and cons), and then select the size of the effect. Out of the box, FTX is set to the REX1 halo, with a size of 11. We found this to be the best balance between size and visibility range. You can play with the application as much as you want until you find the right balance. FSX cannot be running while you run it however. A special thanks to Tim Fuchs, developer of Real Environment Xtreme and Mark Poole for their contributions to the halos in FTX.

What is Custom Landclass?

Landclass are special files which reside in the scenery layer pie, and their role is to tell FSX what type of ground texture to place in any given square kilometer cell. In other words, landclass files tell the simulator to place a field here, a township there, forest here, and a railway yard there, and so on. As far as we are aware, FTX is the first flight simulation product to feature totally hand-crafted landclass on such a large scale. Many global or country-specific addon landclass products for FSX are created using various data sources and compiled using automated scripts and then manually rectified for obvious errors. Not so with FTX. The diagram below gives you an idea of the custom landclass which was shipped with version 1.00 of AU GOLD. Every single square kilometer in the green highlighted areas was hand placed by expert landclass developers, using a combination of many sources, including street maps, aerial photos, topography charts to name a few.

The result is nothing like you have ever experienced before, with an almost photo-real feel to all areas which have been edited, but with the added benefit of faster loading times, full seasonal support and hand-placed custom autogen and library objects in almost every single kilometer of the region.

Features Not Yet Implemented in FTX AU GOLD

Whilst we worked to a high standard for FTX AU GOLD and tested it exhaustively, were not too proud to admit that the product may have some minor issues and bugs, and that we simply ran out of time to implement all the features we wanted to add in. At some point, we had to draw a line in the sand and actually ship product :)

AU GOLD Hotfixes and SP1 Orbx already has a team working on AU GOLD Hotfixes to catch anything that slipped through the cracks. Later down the track all those hotfixes will be combined into AU GOLD Service Pack 1 (SP1). SP1 will also address and fix any bugs logged by the user community (thats you!), plus it will give the team an opportunity to fine-tune the performance further, add new features that did not make Version 1.00, and also add further landclass refinements. Please always check the ftxnow.com website for news about service packs, bug fixes and other free downloads Orbx will be providing. We feel that its important to list missing features and known bugs, simply to avoid you logging bug reports about stuff we already know. The list below is by no means exhaustive, but I think it covers off all we are aware of right now.

Further custom landclass tweaking, although AU GOLD has nearly 100% custom landclass already Tweaks to rivers and streams not covered in the initial release More variety in some crop textures Extension of multi-lane freeways to interstate borders Enhancements made as a result of user feedback, feature requests and reported bugs Further high-rise apartment buildings on the Sunshine Coast and Northern NSW
