Thank You!
The entire Orbx development and testing team would firstly like to thank you for purchasing FTX AU GOLD, the second in our series of terrain scenery for Flight Simulator X. AU GOLD is a relatively compact but incredibly diverse region of Australia, encompassing South East Queensland, which is a VFR flyers Mecca and the heart of the aviation industry in Australia. We hope you enjoy flying in FTX AU GOLD region as much as we did making it.

Well see you back here in the User Guide later ok?

This is a shortcut to the FTX Mode application. After installation of AU GOLD, FTX Mode has already been switched ON for you, so youre all set to fly. The purpose of FTX Mode is to allow you to quickly and simply switch between our custom Orbx files and your normal FSX files. If any of the files we replace had already been modified by you (or other scenery developers addons), then thats fine, because weve backed them up first. Running FTX Mode usually takes about 2-3 seconds at the most.
When should you use FTX Mode? Before flying in an FTX region run FTX Mode and set it [ON] Optional - When youre done, set it [OFF] However, you can usually just leave FTX Mode set to [ON] always, unless our modified files interfere with other addons or scenery. We have tested this extensively and find even with FTX Mode [ON] most other scenery is not adversely affected. Youll need to test it for yourself in your favourite areas. If youre installing other addons, such as Ultimate Terrain X (UTX), or custom landclass files, or anything that may want to change your default FSX files, we strongly recommend that you quickly turn FTX Mode [OFF] before running ANY other addon installers.

Terrain and water These have less of an impact than you may think. Generally Level of Detail and Mesh Complexity can be maxed out; your mesh should be set to the resolution of your mesh files, and texture resolution to 1m. Water effects dont improve past High 2.x, so leave that there if your PC has a graphics card which supports Shader 2.x or above. Some users report that Mid 2.x has no real negative effect on visuasl but gives better frames. Scenery Objects This is a key area. Scenery complexity can be set to Dense, or set to Extremely Dense. Your Autogen Density sliders are one of the most key settings in the simulator. We recommend: Large cities Normal to Dense (Dense if you have a faster PC, Very Dense if its an uber one) Rural areas Dense to Very Dense. (Extremely Dense if you have a faster PC) Wilderness or heavily forested areas Dense to Very Dense
Page 5
The importance of the Autogen Density slider cannot be emphasized enough. The difference in the Brisbane city area for example, between Normal and Extremely Dense autogen can be a threefold reduction in your frame rates. We recommend that you begin with Normal and try increasing it one level until performance drops to the point of stuttering. Then drop it back a notch and youve found you PCs sweet spot. Ground Scenery Shadows Turn these off. They kill frame rates and also have unpredictable visual results, The FTX ground textures include shadows underneath trees and beside a lot of buildings already.
Road Vehicle Traffic Set road vehicles at about 6-15% for FTX. We have bi-directional traffic on all roads, so you can effectively halve the density youve been used to. A high road vehicle traffic setting not only creates a very unrealistic road appearance but also has a huge impact on frame rates. FSX automatically increases traffic densities on freeways depending on population density and dawn/dusk, and we find that 5-15% is the best setting for realism and also good frame rates.
Aircraft Traffic Set airline traffic and GA at your desired settings, however keep in mind that a high setting for airline traffic at major international airports will always adversely affect your performance. Find a balance that works.
Ships and Boats/Ferries Shipping and boating is purely to taste, but again, keep them below 50% for the best realism. Again, be sensible with these sliders if you find performance is suffering, try sliding these back as your first option.

Now to the all-important graphics settings. Set a realistic FPS locked target on our Orbx development laptops 22-25 works well, and in some cases where blurries are not an issue (like night flying), setting FPS to Unlimited can improve the FPS, but you will get some slight stuttering though. Generally the rule is: Locked target frame rates will give crisper textures, no blurries, but slightly less smoothness Unlock target frame rates will provide smoother, more flowing flights, but you will see textures blurring more quickly and also notice the occasional stuttering in the simulator
Full screen (ALT+Enter) or Windowed mode? With FSX SP2, running full-screen with nVidia 7xxx series graphics cards causes constant crashes to desktop (CTDs). The work-around is to run in Windowed Mode, but with the window maximized. This has proven to be an effective mode to use SP2 in, and the Orbx staff are so used to it now, we rarely run full-screen anymore.
Screen Resolution Go for the highest 32-bit screen resolution your monitor allows and set filtering to Anisotropic.
Anti-Aliasing Strangely on our nVidia equipped Orbx Dell laptops, we turn Anti-Aliasing OFF, because the nHancer control panel can override the FSX AA settings which are AAX8, and instead we use and recommend AAX4S. However, on our Quad Core QX6800 desktop benchmark PC, we find that we need to check the AA box to activate it. Try both settings to see what works best for you
Page 7
Global texture resolution This should be cranked to max (or very high we found no visual difference in quality when set to high, but got slightly smoother flights),
Light Bloom Ah good old light bloom! Use it only if you have the grunt, but our opinion is that the visual difference is too marginal to justify the frame rate hit.
Lens Flare My real-world sunglasses dont produce lens flare. But my camera sometimes does. Personal taste
Weather Lastly, the weather settings. Use your personal preferences, but the above screenshot shows our recommended settings if using the default FSX clouds textures. As always, with weather, try using custom weather setting that minimize Cumulus clouds, as the default Cumulus are real frame rate hogs.

[SCENERY] SmallPartRejectRadius=2 Notes for above: This little tweak tells FSX to not draw any objects in the distance which are smaller than 2 pixels wide. This can save on FPS also, particularly on approaches to airports in urban/city areas.
[Main] DisablePreload=1 Notes for above: This will simply avoid pre-loading the default flight and makes for quicker FSX startup times.
[JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=3 (for dual-core PCs) AffinityMask=14 (for quadl-core PCs) Notes for above: This tweak just tells FSX to distribute the load away from a single core of a multi-core CPU PC, which mainly helps with the loading and management of texture and autogen caching. You will see more benefit from this tweak with quad-core CPUs.
Page 9
Give the above tweaks a try and you will find FTX a smoother more enjoyable experience, and in some cases, you will be able to drag the autogen density sliders further to the right.

Theres not a lot to it. You select one of six halo effects (each has a description and a summary of its pros and cons), and then select the size of the effect. Out of the box, FTX is set to the REX1 halo, with a size of 11. We found this to be the best balance between size and visibility range. You can play with the application as much as you want until you find the right balance. FSX cannot be running while you run it however. A special thanks to Tim Fuchs, developer of Real Environment Xtreme and Mark Poole for their contributions to the halos in FTX.
Page 11
The result is nothing like you have ever experienced before, with an almost photo-real feel to all areas which have been edited, but with the added benefit of faster loading times, full seasonal support and hand-placed custom autogen and library objects in almost every single kilometer of the region.

AU GOLD Hotfixes and SP1 Orbx already has a team working on AU GOLD Hotfixes to catch anything that slipped through the cracks. Later down the track all those hotfixes will be combined into AU GOLD Service Pack 1 (SP1). SP1 will also address and fix any bugs logged by the user community (thats you!), plus it will give the team an opportunity to fine-tune the performance further, add new features that did not make Version 1.00, and also add further landclass refinements. Please always check the ftxnow.com website for news about service packs, bug fixes and other free downloads Orbx will be providing. We feel that its important to list missing features and known bugs, simply to avoid you logging bug reports about stuff we already know. The list below is by no means exhaustive, but I think it covers off all we are aware of right now.
Further custom landclass tweaking, although AU GOLD has nearly 100% custom landclass already Tweaks to rivers and streams not covered in the initial release More variety in some crop textures Extension of multi-lane freeways to interstate borders Enhancements made as a result of user feedback, feature requests and reported bugs Further high-rise apartment buildings on the Sunshine Coast and Northern NSW

Read the FAQ First Please There will be a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) pinned topic in the support forums. We ask that you please read through this topic *before* you post a support question. Often times you may find that someone else has already had the same question solved, and for pertinent issues, the Orbx team will add the resolution to the FAQ section to save you having to hunt around for an answer or wait for a reply to your post.
Page 14
The Orbx support team is always on standby to assist you with any problems you may have, or will comment on your bug reports. Please remember, our priority is fixing any urgent issues first, and addressing bug reports second. Clearly any show stopper bugs will be given top priority though.
