Introduction
This Corporate Identity Standards document has been created to define the correct use of fundamental Western Digital branding elements that in many cases unite the corporation and its different business units. It is important to realize that the branding elements covered in this document provide the very foundation of our visual identity. With our thousands of employees and award winning products, the WD brand represents who we are and what we stand for. The power of our brand in part relies on the consistent application of our core identity elements across all communications and geographies. These elements work together to position WD as an innovative, professional, category leading company. Its up to each person who creates communication materials on behalf of the WD brand to remain diligent about maintaining the integrity of the brand by following these guidelines.

WD as a registered trademark
WD is a registered trademark of Western Digital Technologies, Inc. This reinforces the use of WD as the name of the company and is the preferred way to refer to the company, but Western Digital is also acceptable. When using the company name as Western Digital, the same registration rule applies. When used in conjunction with product names such as WD Caviar and WD Scorpio, trademarking WD does not apply since the product names themselves are already registered trademarks. When the company name, WD or Western Digital is mentioned in a single document, the first instance of the name must have a registered trademark.

Chapter 1

Corporate Logo Usage

6

Correct Logo Usage

The corporate logo shown at right is the foundation of Western Digitals graphic identity system. This distinctive symbol consists of two elements and is designed to be easily recognized and remembered internationally. Ensuring Consistency
The colors and proportions of the corporate signature and the monogram must not be altered. Consistent usage of the marks builds recognition. The WD corporate signature (monogram plus logotype) or the WD monogram by itself are both acceptable uses of the logo. When applying the corporate logo, always use the reproduction artwork supplied by Western Digital. Do not redraw or in any way alter the artwork. All applications of the corporate logo and monogram must be approved by WDs Corporate Communications Department. The Western Digital Monogram PMS 301C C:100 | M:76 | Y:0 | K:6 The Western Digital Logotype C:60 | M:40 | Y:40 | K:100

These two elements combine to form the WD corporate signature or logo.

The Monogram

Western Digitals monogram represents Western Digitals familiar name, WD, and symbolizes WDs forward momentum and growth.

The Interactive Monogram

CMYK refers to the four inks used in most color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The numbers (0-100) assigned to each are the percentages of ink necessary to make a specific color.

Western Digitals interactive monogram is for use in computer based applications such as web graphics, software graphics, videos or flash. It is not to be used for print or for displays or trade show graphics.

Correct Logo Usage

Area of Isolation
Making sure that a reasonable amount of space surrounds the entire logo enhances the presentation of the WD corporate signature. This area, referred to as the area of isolation, must remain clear of all graphic imagery, edges, folds and other visual elements. The preferred area of isolation is one full measure of the monogram height expressed by the W dimension. The absolute minimal area of isolation is one-half the measure of the W dimension height extending from the outermost edges of the signature.

Minimum Sizes
The corporate logos should not be reproduced smaller than the minimum sizes listed to the right. The limitations of various media should be considered when placing the logonewsprint, for example, will not hold tiny marks cleanly. The corporate monogram and signature must always appear crisp and clean.

0.75 inch 19.05 mm

.344 inch 8.738 mm

Correct Logo Usage

Logo Reproduction
When the WD signature is used on a white or colored background, certain standards apply to assure the signature is prominent and visible on the page. Examples of acceptable uses are shown at right and on the following pages.

Acceptable corporate signatures applied on a grey background.

Correct Logo Usage

Logo Reproduction
Additional examples for acceptable placement of the WD signature on a colored background are shown at right. The WD corporate signature or blue monogram is the preferred logo on a light colored background. An all black logo or symbol with white letters is also acceptable.

The acceptable logo on dark backgrounds is white with the letters on the monogram knocked out so the background color shows through.

10

Correct Logo Usage

Logo Reproduction
When placing the WD signature on textured and/or photographic backgrounds, judgment must be used on what is acceptable and what is not. Keep in mind that any background the WD logo is placed upon, the underlying image will in effect become a part of the WD monogram. To the right are two examples of the WD signature on textured backgrounds that are acceptable. These background examples show a reasonable canvas for the WD signature to be placed upon. For any questions on appropriate use of the WD signature on textured backgrounds please contact the Corporate Communication Department at wdbrand@wdc.com .

11

Unacceptable Logo Usage

Unacceptable Configurations
Any deviation from the acceptable signature configurations no matter how minor can undermine our valued corporate identity and void legal protection of our registered trademarks. Therefore, no other configuration or any variation on the signature is permitted under any circumstances. Examples of such variations are demonstrated to the right and on the following pages. These examples are meant to be representative and do not encompass all possible cases. To ensure proper application of the corporate signature and monogram, use only the artwork supplied by WD. Artwork may be enlarged or reduced proportionately to satisfy design requirements; however, it may in no other way be altered. The monogram cannot appear on the right, above, or below the logotype.

Black is the only text color that may be used with a blue monogram. If the background color requires that the logotype be white, then the monogram should be white as well.

Background color is too dark for this logotype/monogram usage.

The signature cannot be screened, faded or lightened in any way and can not be used with a drop shadow.

12

Unacceptable Logo Usage

Unacceptable Configurations
Additional examples of unacceptable variations are shown at right and on the following pages. The proportion of the monogram to the logotype cannot be altered.

The aspect ratio cannot be altered.

The signature cannot be tilted or rotated.

The colors of the monogram or logotype must not be altered.

Corporate Tagline and Product Name Usage

16

Corporate Tagline Usage

Put Your Life On It is WDs corporate tagline. The line represents our commitment to unsurpassed quality and reliability that gives users the confidence to trust their lifes information to Western Digital products. Ensuring Consistency
The colors and proportions of Put Your Life On It must not be altered. Consistent usage of the marks builds recognition. When applying Put Your Life On It, always use the reproduction artwork supplied by Western Digital. Do not redraw or in any way alter the artwork. All applications of the Put Your Life On It type treatment must be approved by WDs Corporate Communications Department. This corporate tag line may be used in advertising, collateral or other graphics and must be accompanied by the Western Digital logo or monogram.

17

Correct Usage
Area of Isolation
Making sure that a reasonable amount of space surrounding the artwork enhances the presentation of the message. This area, referred to as the area of isolation, must remain clear of all graphic imagery, edges, folds and other visual elements. The preferred area of isolation is twice the height of the letters in the tagline. For instance, if the logo is 1 inch high, the area of isolation would be 2 inches on all sides.

Minimum Sizes
The corporate tagline may not be reproduced smaller than the minimum sizes listed to the right. The limitations of various media should be considered when placing the artworknewsprint, for example, will not hold tiny marks cleanly. If the available space does not allow for the tagline to be shown at the minimum size, it should be left off the design. The WD corporate signature or monogram logo should always be considered before the corporate tagline. 0.125 inch 3.175 mm

The Western Digital logo or monogram must always be included in any artwork using Put Your Life On It. The tagline may never be combined or touching the corporate logo and guidelines for proper area of isolation and size must be followed. When using the WD monogram and the Put Your Life On It logo in the same space, please refer to the Put Your Life On It lockup on the next page. The Put Your Life On It tagline can not be recreated in any other typeface.

Product Name Usage and Category Descriptor

Correct Product Name Usage
An important, but often over-looked aspect of marketing WD products is using complete, and legally correct, product names. Using complete product names fully describes the product for customers and helps protect our valuable brand assets from becoming genericized. Proper Western Digital product naming dictates that the product name (example: WD Caviar Black) be used as an adjective and is combined with the category descriptor (example: Desktop Hard Drives) which is used as a noun. The correct product name, WD Caviar Black Desktop Hard Drives, correctly and fully describes the product, will be most easily understood by our customers and protects our sub-brands. On the following pages information how to type-set product names in display typography situations (example: posters, trade show graphics, print ads) and as body copy will be clarified. For more information or any questions regarding correct product naming contact wdbrand@wdc.com.

Product Name and Category Descriptor Relationship

In most creative applications like print ads, collateral, POP and on the web, when creating display typography (not body copy), the primary product name (My Book Essential, for example) should be approximately 1/3 larger (33% larger) than its category descriptor (External Hard Drives). Minor adjustments in this recommended proportion between the primary product name and the category descriptor may be necessary depending on the final size and how its used. Please note that within body copy or simple text applications (as shown on page 15 of this document) the product name and category descriptor should be the same font and size with no proportional variations.

Kerning
Always kern your and TM symbols. And please remember, that while they need their own space, they should not be orphaned from the type they follow, or appear too tight and touch other letters. Use your best judgment. Its a good idea to print your work and check for readability if you have any question. -60 0 -130 -10

Product Name Usage and Category Descriptor

Trademark Alignment and Font
Trademark identification symbols should be approximately 75% smaller in point size than its adjacent type (for the example at right, My Book is set at 50 pt. and the is set at 12 pt.) Note this specification is simply a rule of thumb and all final typesets will require your designers eye when setting these marks, especially within much smaller (body copy) and larger (tradeshow banner) typographic situations. You may use either the baseline shift or superscript function (or a combination of both) to align the mark at the cap height (i.e., the capital M and B as seen here with My Book.) Please keep in mind that trademarks and registered symbols in body copy should never be smaller than 2.5 pt., or 7.5 pt. when using the superscript button. The font for all trademark symbols should be Helvetica Neue Light or Roman as described on page 16, depending on the background color where your final type appears.
