red and green

Severus Snape was lost in thoughts in his office on that Christmas day. He had always hated Christmas, except for a very brief period that was his years as a student at Hogwarts. Even then, Christmas meant going home for the holidays, which was not a selling point, but a painful obligation. He hated leaving the warm, magical shelter and having to return to the bitter and dark place where there was no love or peace but angst and fighting. At least, after he started attending Hogwarts, he finally and slowly began to understand Christmas cheer and felt slightly less out of place. He felt he knew why he was changing his mind. At least he knew what he liked best about Christmas; he loved that the decorations were red and green! They were his favorite colors. Even though, as a proud Slyherin, he sometimes felt guilty about liking red so much, he couldnt help it. Whenever he saw anything in red, his heart did cartwheels! His fellow Slytherins the ones who were close to him, anyways were teasing him saying a certain red-haired witch was the reason why his almost permanent frown occasionally turned upside down. Some other Slytherins the ones who werent as close didnt like hearing this, the witch in question was Muggle-born after all. Young Severus tried not to let the leers, the jeers, the sneers and even the insults get to him. There really was nothing going on between him and her, anyways. She was just a really close friend, who happened be the prettiest girl who ever lived, who happened to smell like flowers, sweets and

music at the same time and who was somehow able to make the sun rise whenever she came around. His most prized possession was something this friend gave him for Christmas once. They had bumped into each other a few days before that said Christmas and she, unlike so many others, was actually happy to see him. Here, she said, in case I dont see you before I leave for home. Merry Christmas! Severus watched her open her backpack and take a neatly wrapped parcel out. It reminds me of home. I know youre not exactly fond of yours but maybe itll remind you that Im always close by! She quickly hugged him before rushing off to class. Severus stood motionless for a while, not really aware of the rest of the school running around him. That was the only time he was ever late to class. That year, on Christmas night, after making sure all of his friends in his dormitory were asleep, he took out the parcel he hid in his trunk and began unwrapping it guided by the faint moonlight. He was pleasantly surprised to find a snow globe in his hands when he finished tearing the wrapping paper. He had never seen such a magical object that wasnt really magical at all. Professor Snape was sitting in his office, lost in thought. He decided to close the drawer which contained nothing but an old snow globe and an old Muggle holiday card. The ink on the card was fading. It read: To Sev, May you have many happy Christmases and may all of your wishes come true. Love, L.

Query: Hello Emma! Theres someone Ive had feelings for for quite some time. Were friends but I feel like we can still be more than that. I think I need to know for sure if that will happen. Also, youre so much better than Trelawney. Thanks! - Anonymous Answer: 1. Who you are or think you are Queen of Swords 2. Who he is or thinks he is Two of Pentacles 3. What you feel Four of Pentacles 4. What he feels Ace of Swords 5. What you want Nine of Swords 6. What he wants Queen of Pentacles reversed 7. Outcome Three of Pentacles You are realistic, straightforward, and clear-thinking individual. You look at situations in a in a logical and astute way and your approach to challenges is direct and to the point. Being clear and focused is generally one of your strengths, but it can also mean that you might suppress your true emotional needs. He, likewise, approaches things in a practical way, but he is also flexible and adaptable and he deals well with change. He may be concerned with making choices or balancing priorities. At the moment you may be feeling like you have a limited perspective. This could be because you are determined to make things go your way and only your way but keep in mind that there are other options and paths that are valid and worthwhile. Be open and flexible to other possibilities. He feels he is seeing things clearly and objectively, and he is approaching things with a sense of optimism and honesty. He recognizes something as an exciting challenge, possibly one related to a need for expression. This expression could be of an idea or an emotion related to honesty or truth.

Issue III, December 2011

What you most want is to avoid mistakes and regrets. You may be stepping carefully and analyzing meticulously in order to steer clear of fault or error, for you dont want to look back on this period of your life with negativity or disappointment. He wants to escape responsibilities and leave practicality behind. He may find that a realistic approach to things is stifling or somehow lacking, and instead of taking measured, practical steps toward a goal, he would much rather go with his instinct and act impulsively. Before doing so, however, it is important that he understands why he feels this way and how and impulsive decision might affect the outcome of the challenges he currently faces. The outcome as indicated by this spread will be a positive joint effort leading to an accomplished goal. There is a definite element of cooperation and if you two relate with the sense that you are a team supporting each other, the result will be positive and conducive to a good relationship, whether it be romantic or not. The cards did not indicate to me explicitly whether a romantic relationship is in store, so I drew a few other cards to determine what kind of relationship is most likely to develop and how well the relationship would work. I drew the Seven of Pentacles to represent how well a relationship of any kind would work. According to this card, the relationship that will emerge from your current interactions will be one that is successful but only with effort. The cards I drew to determine the nature of the relationship itself were altogether ambiguous first, I kept drawing pentacles that represented accomplishment. Then, after focusing myself more, I drew the Knight of Wands. Since this card is of the wand suit, I would speculate that there is a dynamic and exciting romantic relationship on its way. Since this Knight is an impulsive, passionate character, Im thinking it might represent the side of your crush that wants to abandon rationality, thereby indicating that in a relationship, this side of him will become more prevalent. If you are the type to get swept up in this impulsive and exciting energy, I would advise that you keep at least one foot on the ground. Dynamic impulsiveness is fun, but you need a little bit of rationality to stay balanced. Heres hoping everything works out for the best! Thank you for your query. - Emma [SparksProphecy86]

Its Christmas time here at Hogwarts! And of course, the house elves never fail to make a delicious feast. Not to mention the artists and designers of Pottermore never fail to make a delicious.. Uh, moment. Moment One: The Library. Nothing has ever made me want to attend Hogwarts more than the library as depicted on Pottermore. I spent a good ten minutes on this moment alone, clicking books and signs and examining the stone and doorways! (Not to mentions you can zoom in to 3 different frames! That always gets me excited.) But I really wish we could read the books we find. I hate just having all of them sitting there in my trunk. Serving no purpose whatsoever. Hidden objects: There are four books, and a chocolate frog card. I wont give away any locations, that takes away all the fun. Moment 2: Christmas at Hogwarts. This was cute! The legendary Christmas feast; very popular, but never very populated. There was a decent amount going on here, and the Great Hall was depicted as I would have imagined it in the books during the holidays. (Not to mention the artwork for the carrots was phenomenal.) And was I the only one wondering why the hell there was a man with a Viking helmet sitting at the table? Hidden objects: one book, two ingredients, one object, and one galleon. Moment 3: The Unused Classroom. This is my favorite moment in the stories, and it was a pretty great moment on Pottermore, too. The big story moments so far have a history of poorly transferring over onto Pottermore, but Im pleased with this one. Theres really not much to say about it.. The artwork is GORGEOUS; its so mystical, yet dark and fits the mood well. Im already getting nostalgic for Harrys past... This is rather emotional. We also got exclusive content from the queen herself! Unlock it by clicking on the mirror. Hidden objects: One galleon. Please send in any comments or questions you have! Id be happy to feature them in upcoming reviews. Send an owl to Submit@RofPm.com!

Are House Elves Stealing Your Christmas Presents? v Hogwarts students, former or current, have all felt the warm fuzzies on Christmas mornings when they wake up to find piles of presents by their beds. It is no secret that those presents, sent by loved ones to each pupil, are placed on their respective owners beds by house elves. The same house elves who do the students laundry, all the cooking and cleaning. But recently Ive been told by an insider something that will no doubt make students think twice before trusting the little helpers. The scandalous truth is that house elves occasionally take a few presents from huge piles, where a few boxes can easily go missing unnoticed. My source, who asked not to be named, reports that in the tiny rooms the house elves sleep in on the floor of the kitchens, the elves hide their loot. Dumbledores known about this for years, my source says, and hes been turning a blind eye. Im pretty sure its because the elves sometimes find sherbet lemon in the presents they steal from Muggle-born students. The elves all know how fond of sherbet lemon Dumbledore is. (My devout readers will remember this isnt the first time Albus Dumbledore is being accused of eccentric misdoings!) House elves are pesky, little creatures, shares Narcissa Malfoy. They have no sense of loyalty. Youll feed them, offer them shelter and a sense of purpose but theyll leave you at the first chance they get. If you accidentally hand over a piece of cloth, dont trust your servant of many years, decades even, to stick with you! But its not just former house elf-owners who are worried by the revelation of the sneakiness of the Hogwarts housekeepers. Parents are concerned that their hard-earned galleons are being spent on presents that wont even reach their children: It was bad enough that they had us spending money on all the rubbish theyve been asking for. Now you tell me theyre not even getting them? What does the clown of a headmaster even do? Yours truly would like to warn you, bright Ravenclaws. Ask your parents, and whoever else would send you presents, what they sent you before you get your Christmas presents. Or dont and let your brand new broom be used to sweep the dormitories.

Question: Okay. So. Ive been pretty depressed lately, and it all has to do with school. Im taking a particularly tough AP course and I cant seem to talk to my teacher without getting visibly upset, and today I was talking to a counselor-type person and she was like, Youre making your teacher uncomfortable, its like emotional blackmail. So now Im feeling extremely guilty and I dont know how Im going to face said teacher, especially after I had written a letter to her earlier that day trying to explain that I havent been doing much work for her class because Im doing badly emotionally. Ugh, shes probably going to talk to me saying This was very inappropriate or something, when all I was trying to do was explain myself. Its like, sorry, I didnt know, please dont hate me, Im not trying to make you uncomfortable and I feel really bad about it. How the hell am I going to walk into her class tomorrow? Really, all I was trying to do was just make her understand whats happening so she doesnt look at me like Im a terrible person anymore. And then my counselor and my mom were telling me that I cant continue with this class because its putting too much of a strain on me, but honestly, I think it would hurt more to know that I had dropped an AP class than it would to continue with the class even though its hard. It would just be another failure hanging over my head, and I cant deal with that right now. I really need to convince these people that I can handle it, and that I NEED to stay in this class -- I belong there, Im very smart and capable. Its just been these last couple of weeks that its been tough. It doesnt mean that the class will continue to be hard for me, especially because Im feeling more optimistic in general. Please, what should I do? Answer: If you are so dead-set on continuing the class, then the first thing you need to do is to get your head right without bringing your teacher into it. As much as I hate to say this, most teachers arent the role-models one might think they are. Though there are exceptions to this rule, I think it can safely be said that, especially as one moves further ahead in school, the chances of teachers viewing themselves as guides for young minds and hearts diminishes; and the chances of them viewing their position as, more or less, just their occupation increases. I cant really speak for your AP teacher, but this seems to be the case at least to a point -- either that, or your teacher is attempting to display tough love to you (which would be fitting in a class preparing one for college). Whichever the case may be, however, theres really only one course of action: find an outlet for your emotional woes that doesnt involve your instructor.

a social worker or a similar sort of psychiatric professional. Its good that youre feeling a general optimism overall recently, but youre going to need to go into your AP class emotionally clear if you want to stay in it. That brings me to step two. Once youve got your mind right, apologize to your AP teacher. Keep it brief, and explain that you were just going through a rough patch and you were only trying to relate that so your teacher could understand your difficulty and why you constantly got upset, etc. I know you already wrote a letter explaining all this, but its going to have much more impact if youre calm and happy and not distraught -- your teacher will see that youre ok and youre speaking with a clear mind. But, again, be brief on that apology and explanation, otherwise your teacher might think that this is just an emotional bandage -- a calm before another storm, if you will -- and it will invalidate your explanation, your apology, and your state of mind as far as your teacher is concerned. I know its not exactly right that you have to apologize because you were denied the help and guidance that you need and deserve as a budding mind, but thats how the game is played, unfortunately -- and if youre absolutely set on continuing on with your AP class, you gotta play the game. I know its not easy to ask somebody on the verge of adulthood and the road ahead to suddenly change their mindset instantaneously, but that is the task ahead for you. I doubt it will be easy, but thats why you need to rely on your true friends, family thats willing to help, etc. If you can show your AP teacher that your head is right and that you can overcome, there should be no problem with you being able to continue your AP class -- and if you do, indeed, manage to overcome, you should have no problems finishing the class. I will also say, though, that theres no shame in dropping the class if you need to. There are many roads to success; but more importantly, one AP class wont make or break you in any way, shape, or form. It wouldnt be a failure -- it would be a strategic move for yourself. Having gone through high school, I can tell you that its relatively small peanuts. I want to share this with you so you know, and its coming from an impartial source. Best of luck to you in the future, anony.
