Determining Memory Settings for a Virtual Machine

General Installation Instructions for All VMware Products

Beforeinstallingaguestoperatingsystem,createavirtualmachineandensurethatitsdevicesaresetup correctly.Forexample,installnetworkingsoftwarewhenyouinstalltheguestoperatingsystem,andconfigure andenabletheEthernetadapterforthevirtualmachine. ThetoolorinterfaceyouusedtoconfigurethevirtualmachinedependsontheVMwareproductyouare running. Anewvirtualmachineislikeaphysicalcomputerwithablankharddisk.Beforeyoucanuseit,youmust partitionandformatthevirtualdiskandinstallanoperatingsystem.Theoperatingsysteminstallation programmighthandlethepartitioningandformattingstepsforyou. NOTEYoushoulddisablescreensaversthatmightberunningonthehostsystembeforeyouinstalltheguest operatingsystem. Installingaguestoperatingsysteminavirtualmachineisessentiallythesameasinstallingitonaphysical computer.
Typical Installation
Thebasicstepstoinstallatypicaloperatingsystem: 1 2 StartyourVMwareproductandconnecttothevirtualmachine. InserttheinstallationCDROMordiscoftheguestoperatingsystemintotheCDROMordiscdrive connectedtothevirtualmachine. ESX Server 2.x:YoumustinserttheinstallationCDROMordiscinthedriveontheserverwherethe virtualmachineisrunning.Youcannotusethedrivesonthemanagementworkstation.

Aswithphysicalcomputers,operatingsystemsrequireseparatelicensesforeachvirtualmachineyourun. NOTESomeMicrosoftWindowsOEMdiscsincludedwithnewcomputersarecustomizedforthose computersandincludedevicedriversandotherutilitiesspecifictothehardwaresystem.Evenifyoucan installthisWindowsoperatingsystemonyourphysicalcomputer,youmightnotbeabletoinstallitina virtualmachine.YoumightneedtopurchaseanewcopyofWindowstoinstallinavirtualmachine.
ISO Installation
RatherthanbootfromaphysicalCDROM,youcancreateanISOimagefilefromtheinstallationCDROM. YoucanstoretheISOfileonthehostmachineoronanetworkdriveaccessiblefromthehostmachine.Usethe configurationtoolforyourVMwareproducttoconnectthevirtualmachineCDdrivetotheISOimagefile, andturnonthevirtualmachine. UsinganISOimagefileisconvenienttoinstallthesameoperatingsysteminmultiplevirtualmachines.Itcan alsohelpyouworkaroundaproblemseeninhostconfigurations,inwhichthevirtualmachineisunableto bootfromtheinstallationCDROM.
PXE Installation
IfyouplantouseaPXEservertoinstalltheguestoperatingsystemoverthenetwork,youdonotneedthe operatingsysteminstallationmedia.Whenyouturnonthevirtualmachine,thevirtualmachinedetectsthe PXEserver.
