Consciousness Cleanse Day 1: The Gift of Desire

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 05, 2010

Welcome to Day 1 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. I'm thrilled that you've chosen to join me in this journey. I promise you that this is a day that can radically alter your life and bring about significant, important and inspiring changes. On Day 1, it's imperative that you bring forth your soul's greatest desire, that you pick one goal to achieve in the outer world and one goal to achieve in your inner world in the next 21 days. You might ask, "Why is this important?" It is because desire is the spark that ignites the flame of your soul and illuminates your innate creativity, imagination and vision. On this day, you will summon one of the most powerful agents of change in the universedesire. In its purest form, your soul's desire is a magnet pulling you toward the life you want to live. Your desires will source you with the inspiration to release your outdated beliefs and let go of whatever behavior is keeping you stuck in the past. Your soul's desires compel you to grow, evolve and move closer to your highest potential. Beneath the surface of your ego's insatiable cravings, your authentic desires are waiting patiently for you to acknowledge, claim and express them. So today is the day for you to evoke two desires for 2010 that will lead you to joy, fulfillment and the next greatest evolution of yourself. These desires will act as your guide and your focus point through this life-altering process. Take these next few minutes to go inside to that place where you have all the wisdom you need to live a life you love.

Listen to your meditation on desire

(8 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write down the area of your life that most needs your attention right now and then write out all the details you saw of your soul's vision for this part of your life. What will that part of your life look like? How will achieving your goal change your life? How will it change the life of those around you? When you reach your goal, when you fulfill that desire, what will it make room for? Write that all down. Then write down your inner goal. What is the one feeling you desire to feel most this year? How will you act differently if you were feeling that feeling all the time? How would people around you benefit? What would be different in your world?Write it out in great detail. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What is one action you can take today that will move you one step closer to your soul's vision? Make a commitment to take that action. Your Inner Goal: What is one action you can take or one thought you can think that will support you in having more of the feeling you most desire?Take that action or think that thought today. Soul Food: I am worthy of living my heart's desires. Consciousness Cleanse Day 2: The Gift of Self-Awareness

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 05, 2010

Welcome to Day 2 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. I'm delighted to be here with you as we continue this life-changing journey. Now that you have brought your one inner desire and your one outer desire to the surface of your consciousness, it is time to turn your attention to that which is secretly (or maybe not so secretly) standing in the way of having what you want and fulfilling your soul's deepest desire. It is our interpretation of the past, our limiting beliefs and our undigested pain that stop us from being able to move forward with clear direction. And one of mechanisms that keeps all of that active within us is our attachment to seeing our lives in a particular way. So today I ask you to invoke the agent of change called self-awareness to begin the process of digesting and releasing the toxic perspective that keeps you from being able to design a future based on your soul's desire. Self-awareness is the ability to take an honest look at your life without any attachment to it being right or wrong, good or bad. This agent of change asks you to view your life as though you were watching a movie, looking at your life from the vantage point of a neutral observer in order to gain a different perspective. Now imagine for a moment that it is your perspective that is standing in the way of your desired future. If this is true, are you willing to shift the way you see yourself, others and the world? Ask yourself: "What decisions have I made? What assumptions have I drawn about my life that are keeping me stuck repeating the past? What beliefs have I adopted that are draining my life force and robbing me of my desired future? And what do I actually say to myself throughout the day that keeps any negativity alive?" As my friend Deepak Chopra says, "Nonjudgment creates silence of the mind." And silence of the mind, my friends, allows us to create unimaginable futures. A new perspective can quiet your mind.

Listen to your meditation on self-awareness

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write down your positive thumbs-up movie review of the life you saw during the meditation. Write out the experiences that you are still making wrong and the negative perspectives you may still be holding. Make sure to write out anything from your past that appears to be keeping you stuck or would keep you from reaching your desired result. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What is one action you could take in the outer world today that will bring you closer to your goal? Schedule a time to take the action today. Your Inner Goal: What could you do or what thought could you think today that would evoke the feeling you want to experience most this year? Take that action or think that thought today. Soul Food: Self-awareness is my key to freedom. Consciousness Cleanse Day 3: The Gift of Release

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 05, 2010

Welcome to Day 3 of The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. As you will experience in this process, each day builds upon the last. The work you did yesterday on becoming aware of the perspective through which you view your life prepared you perfectly for today's extraordinary agent of change: release. As you become aware of what has robbed you of the purity of an innocent mind, a clear heart and a strong body, you will be deeply served by letting go of those familiar limitations. Release, letting go and the shift in perception that accompanies it are the heart of all transformation. Yesterday, you became aware of the negative interpretations, experiences and beliefs that have plagued your past. Now imagine that for every negative thing that has ever been said or done to you, a little pellet of pesticide has entered your bloodstream. And, on top of that, think about the things you have said to yourself, the anxieties and insecurities you've obsessed over, the fearful judgments you have believed to be true. Imagine all these damaging things as little pellets of pesticide that have entered your consciousness, blocking your ability to see the grandeur of your divinity. These pollutants have taken a toll, haven't they? They have sapped your energy and dimmed your inner light. But here is the fabulous truth that I'll keep coming back to: Even if those toxins have been coursing through your bloodstreamand your mindstreamfor decades, you can release every bit of it. You can transmute it. You can be free. You can release behaviors that you make visible into the outer world (such as overspending, gossiping or avoiding exercise) and you can release the things that hold you back in the privacy of your inner being (such as harboring resentments, belittling yourself with your thoughts or obsessing over a lost love relationship). Today is the day to open the door and begin the holy process of releasing it all and letting your holiest self sweep out your cellar and haul away the toxic mold of the past.

Listen to your meditation on release

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write out all the details of what you need to release in order to move closer to your goal for the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. When you are done writing, take the pages and do a ritual of release with them. Rip them up into small pieces, flush them down the toilet, throw them in the trash, toss them in the fireplace. And as you do, recite these words: "I give this to you, God, to transform into nectar for my soul. I let go of all that has taken up space in my mind, body and psyche. I give to you all the pain that I've been unable to let go of. Today, I ask that you turn what has formerly been toxic into fuel for my future." Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What could you release today? What is one action you could take in the outer world today that will bring you closer to your goal? Take that action. Your Inner Goal: Identify an action you can take or a thought you can think today that will give you the feeling you are seeking in 2010. Soul Food: I am released from the toxicity of my past. Consciousness Cleanse Day 4: The Gift of Forgiveness

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 06, 2010

To transcend limitations and form positive new patterns of life based on who you know you can be rather than who you were yesterday, you must give up the modes of thinking, feeling and behaving that only keep you chained to your past . Although you may have felt at a loss as to how to make this liberating shift, you've been holding the key all along: It is forgivenessyour next agent of change. Releasing the invisible ties to those who have left you, betrayed you, disappointed you or hurt you, you open up to higher realms of love, peace and joy. Without forgiving them and cutting the cords of resentment, you continue to be imprisoned by the very people you've spent years (or a lifetime) trying to get away from and you are bound to the incidents that caused the resentment in the first place. And because the outer world is a steadfast reflection of your inner world, these resentment and grudges ensure that you re-create situations that spark the same bad feelings you want to escape from. Resentments and grudges are two of the main culprits that perpetuate cycles of self-abuse and victimhood. Stowed away inside you like parasites, they deplete you of your God-given life force and separate you from your inherent worth, your joy and the love in your heart. Today I want to ignite the fire in you to fight for your freedom, to fight your way out of the prison of the toxic beliefs and emotions that keep you exiled from your own heart. As you say goodbye to lingering disappointments and unattended grief, you will discover that every person, situation and painful incident comes bearing gifts. Free of the pain that has caused you to react instead of act, to shut down instead of open up, to push away rather than allow in and to judge instead of love, you can begin your life anew. As the gifts are often hidden from you until you take the courageous step into forgiveness, you are about to discover that Day 4 of the consciousness cleanse is a turning point in the process.

Listen to your meditation on forgiveness

(5 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write a letter expressing all the pain and grief you've been holding on to and then in your letter, ask your highest self for release from the prison of your resentments, grudges and disappointments. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What could you do today to forgive? What is one action you could take in the outer world today that will bring you closer to your goal? Schedule a time to take that action. Your Inner Goal: What action could you take or what thought could you think to evoke the feeling you identified on Day 1 of the cleanse? Soul Food: Forgiveness is my ticket to freedom.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 5: The Gift of Reverence

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 07, 2010

Welcome to Day 5 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Yesterday, you bathed your consciousness in the healing elixir of forgiveness . Forgiving yourself and others makes life sweeter. As it melts away bitterness and resentments, we feel better and care more. And we're able to contact the deep respect that defines today's agent of changereverence. You have spent the past four days deeply engaged in clearing your consciousness at the mental and emotional levels, and it is time now to turn your attention to your bodythe outward manifestation of your consciousness. Releasing any habitual ways of looking at or talking about your body, I invite you to approach it today with reverencevaluing it and honoring it as the home of the divine, the resting place of the holy. When you know in your bones that your body is a sacred gift, you move in the world with an effortless grace. Gratitude and humility rise up spontaneously. When you treat yourself with the kindness and high regard that you would give to one of your spiritual heroes, your body becomes the epicenter of quiet joy rather than a battlefield for the ego. So if you have been suffering with physical ailments or even a spiritual emptiness, I want to share with you what I know to be true: The more love and reverence you give your body, the better you will feel. The more attention you give your sacred container, the more divine power it will be able to hold. To step into reverence for your body, you must pardon yourself for all you have done and not done to care for it. You must bless what works and accept and embrace all you perceive to be wrong. You must bring your attention to the beautiful job it does each day to keep in the game of life. And bless it for the opportunity it gives you to evolve your soul. Bless your body, and it will bless you back. This is your sacred task today.

Listen to your meditation on reverence

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write a letter to your body asking for forgiveness. If you knew that your body was the holy container of the Divine, what do you need to say you're sorry for? Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: Today, identify one thing that you can give up for the next 16 days to increase your level of reverence. What habit, behavior, belief or self-talk violates the respect, dignity, honor and tenderness you have for your body? Your Inner Goal: What could you do to evoke your inner feeling today? Take that action. Soul Food: I revere my body as a sacred container of the divine.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 6: The Gift of Surrender

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 08, 2010

Welcome to Day 6 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. You have been actively engaged for almost a week in a process that is designed to support you in reconnecting with your deepest purpose. Reflecting back on the previous five days, you have worked to identify and clear away the emotional and psychic debris that has littered the path to your future. It is natural that uncomfortable emotions may be surfacing as you navigate your inner world. But today the tide turns. It is clear to me that one of the biggest obstacles we face as human beings is the pain we put ourselves through when we resist and wrestle with our emotions. It would be impossible to estimate how much time and energy we invest in trying to fix, change and deny our emotionsespecially the ones that shake us at our very core, like hurt, jealousy, loneliness, shame, rage and grief. But what is even more sobering is the fact that somewhere along the way, we decided we were supposed to handle all those emotions on our own. So today, invoke the agent of change known as surrender in order to create a relaxing environment of tolerance and spaciousness within yourself. Surrender to your emotionssimply allow all of them to exist. When you stop resisting your emotions, you will quickly realize that your feelings are your friends. They are your soul's way to communicate with you and are meant to guide and inform you. When you allow your emotions to be as they arejust as you would encourage a child to dosomething magical happens: They pass through you. The moment you surrender your emotions, they will be transformed into evolutionary fuel for your soul.

Listen to your meditation on surrender

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Imagine that your resistance to your emotions is based in fear. Tune in to the voice of fear. Listen to the judgments you hold on these emotions, and then write out everything you hear. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What action step could you take in the outer world today that will support the fulfillment of your goal? Can you do it immediately? If not, put it in your schedule and make it a priority. Your Inner Goal: Identify an action you can take today that will give rise to the feeling you wish to embody this year. Take the action as if it's one of the most important things you will do today...because it is. Soul Food: Divine goodness awaits me.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 7: The Gift of Self-Acknowledgment

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 10, 2010

Welcome to Day 7 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. You began the process this week by stoking the flame of your desire and setting two goalsone for your inner world and one for your outer world. By taking the time each day to do your meditations and cleansing rituals, you are unhooking from the past and gently altering the fabric of your life. This is cause for celebration, and the sacred process of self-acknowledgment is the act of consciously and deliberately celebrating the best inyourself . By embracing self-acknowledgment today's potent agent of changeyou will take the next step in clearing out and opening up your consciousness for the powerhouse week ahead. Self-acknowledgment boosts your emotional and spiritual immunity, giving you the strength you need to release the past and rise above fear, doubt or resignation. By affirming your own gifts and accomplishments, you build your confidence and increase your ability to build a brighter future. In the presence of your own loving attention, you create the inner conditions that are necessary to step into the next greatest evolution of yourself. Right now, there is a stronger, more vibrant, more inspired version of you that is wanting and waiting to emerge. Beckoned by your emerging self today, pour yourself wholeheartedly into self-acknowledgment, deliberately turn your attention to all that you have done well in the past, to the qualities that you appreciate about yourself, to the courageous actions you've taken and to the contributions you've made to the people around you. Today is the day to focus 100 percent on what you value about yourself and on all that is going well in your life. As another expression of love, selfacknowledgment is truly a holy practice.

Listen to your meditation on self-acknowledgment

(8 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Imagine that your resistance to your emotions is based in fear. Tune in to the voice of fear. Listen to the judgments you hold on these emotions, and then write out everything you hear. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: Uplifted by the energy of celebration, what action could you take in the outer world today that will support the fulfillment of your goal? Do it with gusto. Your Inner Goal: What could you see, hear or do today to activate the feeling that you want to permeate this year? Open your arms to it. Soul Food: My worth is celebrated by all.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 8: The Power of Liberation

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 11, 2010

Welcome to the second week of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanseseven stunning days of reclaiming your power on levels seen and unseen. As you prepare for these seven days, I ask that you take the time to really acknowledge how deeply you have traveled during Week 1. You did it! You devoted the first seven days to self-observation and self-inquiry to round up many of the beliefs, interpretations and habitual patterns of thinking and feeling that are no longer serving you. It's time now for a new way of being. It's time to be bold, to be radical in your willingness to reinvent yourself. The past need not stifle you one more day. In order to achieve the goal you set for yourself on Day 1 and the feeling you most want to experience, you must move out of the past and open up to the present. You must awaken to a new day, a new time, where you are free to be all you ever imagined. I urge you to really let yourself imagine being free emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. When you do, you will have access to what my friend Deepak Chopra would call the field of infinite possibilitiesthe field of consciousness where you are one with all that is, all that was and all that will be. This holy field of perception doesn't require any more time or miles or pain in order to arrive there. But I can't possibly emphasize enough that accessing it requires that you leave the past where it is meant to bein the past. When you invoke today's agent of change, called liberation , you are igniting the power to release all that reminds you of the past, everything that is symbolic of your anger, your suffering and your attachment to old ways of being. So take the leap with me todaydrop the weight of the past, purge it, thank it, bless it and let it go. From this day forward, anytime you see anything that is unnecessary, throw it away or give it away.

Listen to your meditation on liberation

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Look around your present environment to see what's old, what's toxic, what's wasteful, and what you can't tolerate anymorepapers, old food, expired medicine, old diaries filled with toxic feelings. Schedule a 15-minute block of time today and spend three minutes each in your medicine cabinet, your bedside drawer, your closet, your kitchen cabinet and in the worst place in your house. Count how many items you can throw away or recycle. If you have more than 15 minutes, spend an hour. Do this until you feel liberated. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What could you liberate yourself from that would allow you to move more quickly to your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: What could you do, or what could you allow, that could spark the feeling you want this year? Soul Food: I am liberated from my pasta fantastic future awaits.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 9: The Power of Responsibility

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 13, 2010

Welcome to Day 9 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Now that you have been liberated from the past , it's imperative that you begin today with a new commitment to love, honor, protect and respect the vulnerable, beautiful you that you are. It is your job to care for this sacred being who now stands before you and recognize that it needs you to be an emotional adult who is here for the sole purpose of tending to the true desires of its heart and soul. To care for this new you at the highest level, the agent of change that you must invoke today is the power of responsibility. This is not the responsibility of yesterday. It is not a burden, a problem or a guilt-provoked afterthought. This is the responsibility that comes from responding to your own needs as an adult and building your competency and sense of personal authority one loving choice at a time. In essence, this is the sacred responsibility of choosing to hold and nourish a piece of God. When you are standing in responsibility, nobody is coming to save you, nobody is coming to choose for you and nobody can shepherd this soul into the life it was meant to live but you. You are the mother, the father, the sister, the brother, the teacher and the guide for the soul that has been placed in your trust. And today, Day 9 of the consciousness cleanse, will give you the emotional and spiritual boost to step into these magnificentand perfectly fittingshoes.

Listen to your meditation on responsibility

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual As the emotional adult that you are today, write a letter to your soul telling it what a great honor it is to be the keeper of its flame, to be its partner and humble servant in ensuring that God's light gets expressed through its divine mission. And then ask your soul to show you in the hours and days to come what choices and decisions you need to make and what actions you can take in order to be 100 percent responsible for the deliverance of your soul's highest expression. Keep your journal close by so you can write down the answers you receive. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What is the one thing that is most important for you to take responsibility for in order to bring your goal to fruition? Your Inner Goal: What need could you respond to within yourself that would help you to have access to the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: I am a responsible adult who thrives in the world.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 10: The Power of Humility

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 13, 2010

Welcome to Day 10 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Now that you've stepped up and taken responsibility for your life, it is imperative that you get all the support you need. And although that may sound relatively easy to do, I have found that it's truly one of the hardest things of all. Many of us are walking through life wearing a protective overcoat of arroganceafraid to be wrong, afraid to be open and vulnerable and afraid of finding out who we are. But I promise you, whether your own arrogance is superbly subtle or wildly overt, letting that arrogance begin to melt away will be one of the most extraordinary choices of your life. As you stop trying to forcibly manage the thoughts, beliefs and actions that arise from your mind and ask instead to be guided by a source greater than yourself, you will find a world of support showing up in surprising ways. So today, begin to make a positive new habit of asking for assistance and courage from the divine. By asking God, "Please do for me what I cannot do for myself," you commit fully to living a humble life. At this momentous time in history, you must ask the divine to lift you out of the bondage of self so that you may be able to serve all those who might be healed or inspired by your presence and gifts. When you invoke humility, your next agent of change, you are able to transcend the habitual responses of your lower self, to see how deeply you matter and to know what a vital role your soul plays in the uplifting of the world around you. Your mission today is to turn over your life and your will to the care of something greater than yourself. It is to consciously choose, each minute of the day, to look outside your ego's will in order to see the greater will that is waiting to be done.

Listen to your meditation on humility

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write out the details of who you are judging, the judgments you are holding about them and the cost of holding on to those judgments. And then today, practice opening your heart to the people around you. When you catch yourself in judgment of other people, take a deep breath, acknowledge to yourself that you're judging out of fear and then ask yourself, "How could I humbly open my heart to this person?" Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: With what specific situation or issue could you humbly ask for divine assistance in order to bring your closer to your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: Where could you let go of the need to be right about something so that the doors to your desired feeling can freely open? Soul Food: God can do for me what I cannot do for myself.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 11: The Power of Acceptance

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 14, 2010

Welcome to Day 11 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Today is the day you will find new footings and set the solid foundation for the self you are in this moment. Today is the day you can begin to stand more firmly and consciously in the world, knowing you don't have to do it alone and you are aligning yourself with a miraculous, joy-filled future. To achieve your goals, I am going to suggest you be able to accept life as it is today. When you invoke the agent of change called acceptance, you must accept all that you are, all that you've been and all that you will be in the future. To help you ease into this total embrace of yourself, there are two important facts to accept that effect all of us. The first fact to accept is that your past is your past, and it will never be anything different. There is nothing you can do to change it. The second fact is to accept that stuff happens in your world that will affect your life, and, again, there is nothing that you can do about it except to shift the way you respond. Accepting these truths is a part of becoming an emotionally responsible adult and a humble servant of the divine. If you accept that your only job is to be the keeper of your life force, you will make powerful choices. In building the power and the magnificence of your own life force, you will be graced with the ability to ignite and inspire countless others. Today, accept that there are things you can do to ground yourself, to care for yourself, to expand your awareness and to forge ahead toward your holy future.

Listen to your meditation on acceptance

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Make a list of what you are refusing to accept in your life both from your past and from your present. Then circle the things on the list that you can change. Use the Serenity Prayer to release what you cannot change: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What one thing can you accept about yourself right now that will support you in feeling worthy of your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: What could you accept from your past that would support you in feeling your best? Soul Food: Today I have the courage to accept the things I cannot change.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 12: The Power of Risk

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 19, 2010

Welcome to Day 12 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Today is a day of awakening. The comfort of the self that you know, even if you haven't loved it, always comes with a false sense of security that you will be tempted to hold on to. Like sleeping in your own bed and wearing your same old clothes, it brings some sort of inner security that a part of you wants to cling to. But the problem is that if you continue to stick with the same familiar habits and make the same choices each day, you will become stale and robotic, refusing to have your life show up any differently than it did yesterday. Your soul is infinitely creative. It is alive and expansive in nature. It is curious and playful, changing with the tides of time. For your soul's sake, invoke the agent of change called risk, which ensures that things will not be the same tomorrow as they are today. All real change requires risk. To evoke a highly spirited life, get up each morning not "What can I do that is the same today?" but in fact the complete opposite: "What can I do that is different? What can I do that is enlivening and surprising?" Today is the day to break free from the prison of the person you know yourself to be and step into a self you have yet to know. Will it be comfortable? No, but do it anyway. Growth is usually uncomfortable. If you're looking for comfort, you will more than likely feel tired and old earlier than you want and the misery of your caged soul will always be looming nearby. So today I want to support you in taking risks with joyand if not joy, at least with curiosity, because all living things must grow or they die.

Listen to your meditation on risk

(5 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write a letter to your future selfthe self that has fulfilled all your goals and desires. Let them know exactly what you're willing to risk to show them that you're on their side, that you're willing to let go of the status quo. For example, write down what new behaviors you're open to trying, what new emotions you're going to allow yourself to feel, what new types of food you're ready to sample, and what books, workshops or experiences you're ready to now explore. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What is one risk you can take in pursuit of your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: What emotional risk could you take that will give you access to the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: Change is the magical elixir of my soul.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 13: The Power of the Present

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 19, 2010

Welcome to Day 13 of The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Now that you've spent the past five days steeped in conversations that are designed to bring you more fully and vibrantly into the present moment, it's the perfect time to re-examine what it really means to be present. We hear people talk about being in the present, but why does it matter? Being present means being completely here in body, mind and spiritaware of what's happening around you and within you. It means that this is all there is. There is no tomorrow or even a yesterday or a later today. Now is all that exists. Harnessing the power of the present means having your full awareness on the task at hand and having access to the possibilities, the opportunities and the support that exists right now. That is why the present is our next agent of change. It's realizing that this instant in time is unlike any you've experienced before or will experience again. When you master the art of being fully awake to this moment, you bestow a precious gift on your soulthe experience of love. Being present is the art of the soul. Your mind is at rest because there is nowhere else to go and nothing else to do. There is no past to haunt you or pull you backward. And there is no future to wish for or fantasies to maintain. Being present is truly the demonstration of "this is as good as it gets," because nothing is real except this very moment. In the present, you will feel a level of peace, relaxation, love and contentment that can be accessed only in this moment. This is why it is called the precious present because when you are in it, it is the greatest gift you will ever give yourself. While your past can inform you and your future can inspire you, the moment of choice exists in the here and now. By relinquishing your obsession with the past and your fantasies about the future, you can tap into the power of the present and feel the force of love that resides inside of you. And that is my wish for you todayto let that force of love so capture your attention that there is nowhere else you'd rather be than right here.

Listen to your meditation on the present

(7 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Today is the day for the present-moment awareness practice. Find a comfortable place and take five or 10 minutes to become aware of your surroundings, tuning into the sounds around you and basking in your human body. When you are thinking about the past or projecting into the future, write it down. Keep count of how many times you leave the present moment because awareness is key to being present. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What could you love about yourself right nowwithout making one more changethat would move you closer to your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: What could you do or what choice could you make in this very moment that would bring you the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: The precious moment is all that there is.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 14: The Power of Truth

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 21, 2010

Welcome to Day 14 of the Consciousness Cleanse. As you prepare to move into the third and most life-changing week of the process tomorrow, it is my heart's desire that you feel closer to yourself than ever before. To live in the light of a new day and an unimaginable and unpredictable future, you must become fully present to a deeper truthnot a truth from your head, but a truth from your heart; not a truth from your ego, but a truth from the highest source. You have to be willing to be deeply honest with yourself about the shape your life is in each day. To be honest about the good and the bad, about what works and what doesn't, so that you can live in accordance with your highest self. When you fail to tell the truth, you are kept bound to the past in ways that devastate your soul. The depth of your truth will, in fact, dictate where you can go, what you can have, what you can experience and what you can enjoy. Today's agent of changethe truthasks for total commitment. As you step into your limitless self, you might be confronted with old habits and patterns that are not necessarily based in truth. These old ways of being show up because you have repeated many of them thousands of times. So in order to let the radiant light of your soul shine onto your daily existence, truth insists that you take a fiercely honest daily inventory of your lifemuch like you did on Day 2 of the Consciousness Cleanse, only now with your heart more fully engaged in the process.

Listen to your meditation on truth

(6 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Write out an integrity list of all the places where you see you are not living the truth, where you are still living inside a lie. After you feel complete with your list, write about how you would rearrange your life if you trusted that there was a higher source watching out for you. How would you live and express this truth? Then take one step toward the truth today. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What lie might be keeping you from your desired goal? Write out the truth about it. Your Inner Goal: Where could you speak the truth, to yourself or someone else, that would allow you greater access to the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: The truth will set me free.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 15: The Light of Realization

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 22, 2010

Welcome to Day 15 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. As I have done during our meditations over the past two weeks, I ask you now to take a slow, deep breath. As one of the greatest tools for bringing you home to your body, your heart and your higher awareness, I want to encourage you to begin the third week of

the process really tapping into your breath and the light of realization that rides upon it. My favorite spiritual teacher, Emmet Fox, taught me that the art of living is to make each moment as perfect as I can with the realization that I am an instrument and expression of the Divine herself. I've found the best way to embody this realization is to become a master at shifting my own consciousness. You can do this too. Imagine that at any given moment, all states of being, all levels of consciousness, are available to you. There is always a different point of viewfresh eyes you can look throughthat will lift you out of the darkness and into the light of your higher self. To take advantage of these divine perspectives, you must commit to the practice of choosing higher states of awareness. I like to imagine that states of consciousness are like websites on the Internet. There are literally millions of sites out there in cyberspace. Imagine one being Joy.com, another being Fear.com. Imagine Happy.com, Sad.com, Content.com, Overwhelm.com. Every website every state of being, every state of consciousnesshas a different look, feel and message, all evoking a different feeling. What state of consciousness do you spend the most time on? Which ones do you want to visit? Today is dedicated to invoking the agent of change called realization so that you are more empowered to make conscious and purposeful choices about the new states of consciousness you want to visit and explore. In this way, realization is the gatekeeper to some of the most thrilling inner and outer adventures of your life.

Listen to your meditation on realization

(5 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Become present to the feeling you chose at the beginning of the Consciousness Cleanse, knowing that it holds a sacred and holy frequency and is the foundation for your future. It is an expression of your soul. Just breathe into that. Now gather images, sacred objects, prayers, poems and songs that inspire you and evoke the vibration of the feeling or feelings you chose to expand within you. Take 10 minutes to dwell in the state of consciousness that would most inspire you. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What aspect of your life is calling you to see it in a new light, to have a shift in consciousness? And how can that shift bring you closer to your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: What new internal websitestate of consciousnesscould you visit today that would open you up more to the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: I am an instrument of Godand I love it!

Consciousness Cleanse Day 16: The Light of God's Will

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 25, 2010

Welcome to Day 16 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. After basking in the clarifying light of realization, you're well prepared to open to this truth. God has a plan for youI can promise you that. Your life is sacred. There is and always has been a path for your soul, and if you follow that path, it will lead you to the inner utopia that your soul longs to experience in this lifetime. You are here to manifest the glory of the divine in a way that will serve your own soul and serve the evolution of our world. What you do and how you do it matters. What you say and how you say it matters. What you choose to dedicate your time to matters, not just for you but for all those who are affected by the withholding or the deliverance of your unique gifts. Your soul's mission is to serve in the grandest way it can. Divine plans lie imprinted in your inner world, and there are important lessons for you to learn and share on this journey to your most magnificent self. If you fail to see or learn the lessons, they will eventually become your limitations. Then, instead of joyfully following the voice of your highest self, you will be rerouted down a dark road filled with obstacles, limitations and frustrating delays. So to ease on down the road, you must stay awake and aware, take direction and follow the signs to your highest destination. The only way I know to do this is to invoke our next agent of change, called God's will. When you activate this change agent, your life will be forever altered. You will no longer be confused as to what path you should take, because you will be privy to the path of your own soul. You will no longer have to stay stuck, because you will just ask the divine to show you your next right action, trusting that the higher will for you is greater than your ego's path.

God's will can become your internal reference point from this day forward; it is your choice.

Listen to your meditation on God's will

(7 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual During today's guided meditation, you heard a powerful statement that is a reminder of your choice to live as an expression of God's will. Post your power statement in at least five places and make a list of the benefits that you will receive from allowing divine will to be your guide and compass. Make a commitment to read it for 21 days when you get up in the morning and when you go to sleep at night. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: If you were living your life based on a higher will for you, what would you stop doing in your life in order to fulfill your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: With divine will as your internal reference point, what would you be directed to do next to access the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: May I do thy will always.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 17: The Light of Devotion

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 26, 2010

Welcome to Day 17 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. By today you may very likely feel a raw determination rising up to the surfacethis is the passion of your soul that cannot be held back ever again. When you finally muster up the courage and the strength from inside your human self to declare, "I am going to fulfill my highest potential now," you are lifted out of the confining walls of your ego's will and into the limitless embrace of God's will. When you are committed to living a life in service to the most high, the choices to be great, to serve and be served, to love and be loved are apparent. You are keenly aware that the only way to get yourself to where you want you to go is to keep yourself fully bathed in the light. You know that your one and only job is to nurture and nourish yourself. To stay in the state of inspiration and to experience the profound resource that resides within, invoke the agent of change called devotion. Devotion begins at home, inside your own awareness. Devotion is the agent of change that invites you to devote yourselfminute by minute, hour by hour and day by dayto chipping off whatever is in the way of your golden essence, anything that keeps your light from shining brightly. Calling on you to give up control of the outer world and gladly accept control of your inner relationship with God, devotion is essential for fully realizing your soul's calling. With devotion at the center of your awareness, you don't have to refer to your past in order to make a choice of how to respond or react in any given situation. Instead, you can choose from your present commitment, your only commitment, which is to be the highest, most vibrant expression of divine light that is possible for you. That is a commitment worthy of your dedication, loyalty...and devotion.

Listen to your meditation on devotion

(7 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Find a comfortable place to relax and recall the beauty of your soul's vision. You've very likely already given a great deal of airtime to your voice of fearwith all its doubt and drama about your goals, desires and dreams. Now give your full attention to the voice of faith. Without censoring, take out your journal and write down what faith has to say to you about your future. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What could you devote yourself to in the outer world today that will bring you closer to your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: Devote your attention to the feelings that nurture you and make you feel strong. Soul Food: Devotion is the doorway into my soul.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 18: The Light of Transcendence

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 27, 2010

Welcome to Day 18 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Our focus today is one the most effective and beautiful ways to align with your higher consciousness and one of the most stirring. You are on a soulful path that asks you to step into the greatest version of yourself. It is a sacred gift to shine your brightest light, not just in your moments of glory, but each day. To step into the enormity of what's possible for your life and to live in the expansiveness of your future, you will need to step out of the smallness of your individual self and into the vastness of the collective whole by evoking the next agent of change called transcendence. Inside of your individual self, your human "I," you will remain in the illusion that you are separate from the whole, acting on your own accord. You will more than likely sabotage any greatness that you do express because the deep feelings of unworthiness that arise as a result of denying your divinity will cause you to act out in ways that you never intended. You will hear the noisy chatter of separation and limitation. But when you transcend the "I" and step into the "we" of the collective whole, you are able to be present to the fact that you are a molecule of the greatest power that exists and that you are here to deliver a divine gift to the world. You become willing to be used by a power greater than yourselfnot to just serve yourself but to inspire and ignite a light inside of each soul who is touched by your gifts, kindness and essence. Connected to the collective heart, you can be certain in every cell of your being that you are never alone and you will experience the grace, guidance and ease that comes when you are one with all there is.

Listen to your meditation on transcendence

(7 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Throughout the day, ask for and look for signs of the "we"always identifiable by the grace, guidance and ease that is available when you step out of the constraints of the "I" and into your place of belonging within the collective heart. Watch with the eyes of your heart and listen with the ears of your heart. Make note of the signs you encounter today. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What action could you take today to serve the collective heart that will support the unfolding of your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: What can you do today on behalf of the collective "we" that will open you up to the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: Oneness lifts me up where I belong.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 19: The Light of Purpose

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | December 03, 2009

Welcome to Day 19 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. Uncovering your soul's purpose is not always the easiest task. Throughout your life, you've been influenced by what you have done in the past, what you have been told you can and cannot do and what your present circumstances seem to dictate. To reveal the gifts that lie beneath the surface of your heart's greatest desires, you can now invoke the next agent of change called purpose. If you look to your past or even your present to see why you are here or what your purpose is, you may get stuck in a limited view of yourself. Instead, look beyond your years here on earth, reconnect with the divine, and bring forth your soul's legacy into the present moment. You can satisfy your soul's mission by committing to leaving something behind on this planet that will make a difference to those who come after you. Imagine that your life's efforts serve as a mark of God and that the only way the divine is seen, heard or expressed is through the legacy you leave behind. The yearning to make a difference is your need to express your purpose and derive meaning from your time on earth. Although at this moment you may be unaware of your longing to leave a legacy, your legacy is your birthright, your imprint and a purpose worth getting up for each morning. Your soul has an innate desire to leave its mark, and it is calling you, unceasingly, toward its fulfillment. I am excited to support you today in listening for and heeding that call.

Listen to your meditation on purpose

(7 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual You are the only one who can leave your unique legacy. This is an act of service that is an expression of your soula gift from your soul. Begin today to devote time to exploring and clarifying the details of your legacy. Sit down with you journal and begin a timeline that will be another key step in drawing your legacy out of the creative incubator of your heart and into the arms of the world. Commit to spending 60 minutes each week on your legacy. Put it in your calendar. And if you can't do 60 minutes, commit to doing 30 minutes. You will soon start to see powerful evidence that it's taking shape. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: Fueled by your soul's purpose, what action will you take today that will bring you one step closer to your desired goal? Your Inner Goal: Allowing yourself to be fully guided and inspired by your purpose today, what step can you take that will unleash the feeling you most desire? Soul Food: It's safe to share my gifts with the world.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 20: The Light of Compassion

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | January 29, 2010

Welcome to Day 20 of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse. To attain the inner and outer goals you identified on Day 1 of this process and to truly walk your soul's path, you must invoke today's agent of change, called compassion. Compassion is the key to living outside the confines of your lower self. Compassion is the healing agent that will support you every day in releasing the past and experiencing a calm and certainty born of kindness. Compassion doesn't say, "What can the world do for me?" but rather, "How can I serve the world?" It is the feeling you access when looking at the world through the eyes of the divine heart. A compassionate heart will lift you out of the pain and suffering of your own world, because it knows that everyone is doing the best they can, given their state of consciousness and the histories they're dragging behind them. The divine heart knows that people don't decide at age 3 to grow up and be an abusive parent, a bullying neighbor or a mediocre couch potato, so it forgives easily. Compassion knows that choosing the higher road in any situation is the most loving option for you. So when this agent of change is activated in your awareness, you are finally free to stop taking everything so personally and look beyond the myopic view of your individual self. Compassion enables you to reach to the heavens and look through the heart of God. What an astonishing view...and what a profound relief. It is here that you will finally find the peace you are looking for. It is here that you will be free to surrender your judgments. And it is here that you will experience the liberation of your soul.

Listen to your meditation on compassion

(7 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Identify a place where you've been hard on yourself. Looking through the eyes of compassion, what would you say to yourself? How could you be gentler with yourself in that area? Write it out and make a commitment to treat yourself like a million pounds of gold today. Then find one person to whom you could extend compassion and choose one compassionate act to take. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: What compassionate act will bring you to the doorstep of your outer goal today? Is it for yourself or another? Take that action today. Your Inner Goal: To what aspect of yourself could you bring compassion today that will allow the feeling you most want to experience this year to enter your consciousness? Soul Food: God's eyes are my eyes.

Consciousness Cleanse Day 21: The Light of Possibility

By Debbie Ford Oprah.com | December 03, 2009

Rather than welcoming you to the final day of the 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse, I want to welcome you to an extraordinary new beginning. I want to acknowledge the commitment you've given to your inner world over these three weeks, but also acknowledge that there is a golden door to walk through today. You see, the world is waiting for you. Inspired by the depth of your courage and strength, the divine opens its arms to you as a more fully integrated being who carries the seeds of hope, health, happiness and prosperity to be shared with others. Your consciousness is fertile; it is rich with the food of your soul and the healing balm that can be offered only by your own heart. It has been through the tremendous process of letting go, opening up and taking in. The ground is now prepared for you to continue to plant the seeds of your greatest desires as you enter back into the world, and I can think of no better way to do that than to invoke our last agent of change, called possibility. To follow the call into new, uncharted land, the promise of exciting possibilities is deeply motivatingjust as the divine meant them to be. Not only are the possibilities and opportunities endless for you, but they are endlessly infused with the optimism, hope and magic of their sacred source. Your reentering after today should be done with grace, clarity and easea slow opening up to the outer world, but this time with new awareness, mindfully allowing into the field of your consciousness only what nourishes you. Remember: There is no rush because there's nowhere to go. Your priorities are right in front of you: Tending with great love to the relationship with your inner resource and your tender loving heart.

No doubt the challenges and the losses, the shifts and the changes, will be there, but the goal of a soul that is satisfied, filled up, inspired, happy, passionate and fully alive is worth everything you will go through on your journey.

Listen to your meditation on possibility

(9 minutes)

Cleansing Ritual Find a comfortable place to sit. Light a candle. And write a story now of your soul's purpose. Don't think about it or plan it out in your mind. Just use this sentence as your starting point: "My soul's purpose is..." And know this is indeed the truth. Then, close your eyes and affirm that you will do whatever it is that will fulfill that future. And together we say, "And so it is." In the days to follow the Consciousness Cleanse, I encourage you to commit to spending 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes in the afternoon and 10 minutes in the evening going inside and checking in with your personal GPSseeing if you made wrong turns, seeing if you're going down the wrong road and seeing where the divine wants you to go next. Soulful Action Your Outer Goal: The outer goal you chose on Day 1 of the Consciousness Cleanse is rich with possibilities. What big, bold action are you willing to take today that will begin to bring the possibility fully to life? Your Inner Goal: You chose a high-vibration feeling that you've kept in the forefront of your awareness over the past three weeks. What possibilities does that feeling open up in you? What new experiences are you now willing to allow into your life? What new action can you take today that will allow the full expression of that feeling? Soul Food: I am the light of the world.
