Understanding allergy treatments

Millions of people across the globe suffer from allergies, many of which rear their ugly heads during the spring season. Such a reality can quickly spoil the excitement of the nice weather. Although there is no cure for allergies, individuals who do suffer from allergies have a host of treatment options at their disposals. Some are over-the-counter medications while others require prescriptions. Each type of medication works differently, and allergy sufferers may find it interesting and beneficial to understand the different ways some of the more common allergy treatments work. AntihistAmines Some of the more well-known over-the-counter antihistamines include Benadryl, Claritin and Zyrtec. Prescription antihistamines include Clarinex and Livostin. When an allergy sufferer is exposed to an allergen, cells within the bodys immune system release a substance called histamine, which then attaches to receptors in the blood vessels as well as additional receptors. As a result, the blood vessels enlarge and histamines attachment to other receptors causes swelling, itching, changes in secretions, and redness. However, when an allergy sufferer takes an antihistamine, the medication blocks the histamine receptors, preventing the symptoms in the process. Though antihistamines are effective, they can also cause drowsiness. Allergy sufferers should look for non-sedating antihistamines, which may require a prescription. DecongestAnts Some of the more recognizable decongestants are Sudafed tablets or liquid and Zyrtec-D. Each of these is an over-the-counter decongestant. Prescription decongestants like Claritin-D are often combination medications, which means they contain both an antihistamine and a decongestant. When an individual is having an allergic reaction, the tissues in the nose swell as a result of contact with the allergen. This swelling results in fluid and mucous production, and swelling in the blood vessels of the eyes also occurs, which causes the redness of the eyes many allergy sufferers experience during spring. Decongestants work by shrink-

melatonin and Anti-Aging

Melatonin is a supplement widely used to combat jet lag and alleviate short-term bouts of insomnia. There is also evidence that melatonin as a regular dietary supplement could have antioxidant effects and help slow down the aging process. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland of the body. Due to its light-transducing ability, the pineal gland is sometimes called the third eye. Light absorbed through the retina is relayed to the brain and thusly the pineal gland. The onset of darkness triggers the pineal gland to release melatonin into the bloodstream, which helps to induce sleep in individuals. Younger people, especially children, produce a large amount of melatonin, which is generally why babies can sleep so much. This ability to fall asleep quickly and sleep deeply has benefits for the growing body, allowing cells to rejuvenate and the body to grow and heal. As individuals age, melatonin production decreases. This can be why many older adults have difficulty falling asleep or seem to need less sleep. Study after study indicates that lack of sleep can lead to myriad health problems, including mental health deficits, added stress, heart disease, and others. Each of these conditions can contribute to the aging process. It makes sense, then, that getting frequent and restful sleep can help turn back the clock. But that isnt the only benefit of melatonin, say experts. According to The Aging Clock: The Pineal Gland and Other Pacemakers in the Progression of Aging and Carcinogenesis, by Walter Pierpaoli M.D., Ph.D., melatonin is the Master Hormone-Modulating Molecule. It is the regulator of almost all hormones in the body in addition to regulating the circadian cycles. Dr. Pierpaoli has found that agingis a degenerative condition of the body, not just the passing of years. Resetting the bodys age clock can slow down the symptoms of aging. When the pineal gland of an old animal is transplanted into a young animal, studies show that the young animal slows down and systems of the body function as if it were older. The reverse also applies. Dr. Pierpaoli surmises that melatonin sends a message of youth throughout the body, keeping the body healthy and strong. With this reasoning, melatonin may also help stimulate the immune system, which can promote better overall health, including fending off certain diseases of old age. These include cancers and even dementias. Clinical trials have shown that melatonin can diminish the effects of hormones that trigger certain cancers, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. According to Melatonin and the aging brain, by Stephen Bondy and Edward Sharman, Melatonin has potential utility both in slowing normal brain aging and in treatment of neurodegenerative conditions. This is reinforced by the low cost of melatonin and its very low toxic hazard. Research is still ongoing into the many benefits of melatonin. While it is best not to start any supplement program without first asking a doctor (especially if a person is pregnant or has other medical conditions), those who want to take melatonin should look for the synthetic variety. These are made from plant material to mimic melatonin produced in the body. Animal-based melatonin can contain diseases and other pathogens. A relatively small amount of melatonin is needed to produce large effects. Consult with a specialist on the right amount to take for desired results.

Sleep is essential to the body and can help stave off effects of aging. Melatonin supplementation can assist in triggering a restful nights sleep.

hobbies for arthritis sufferers

Individuals with arthritis are often stuck between a rock and a hard place. Doctors want people to exercise to keep up the range of motion in affected joints. However, even some limited movements can cause pain and suffering to those with arthritis. Furthermore, individuals with arthritis may shy away from the activities they once enjoyed because the pain is simply too overwhelming. Instead of simply sitting on the couch watching television, there are a number of different things arthritis sufferers can do to pass the time and reconnect with past hobbies and interests. It might just take a little re-outfitting of the tools that are needed to participate. gArDening Gardening is a popular pastime for people of all ages. But the repetitive motions of digging and tilling as well as gripping a multitude of tools can take the joy out of the hobby. People with arthritis can make some changes. Raised garden beds or container gardening eliminates the stooping and bending associated with traditional gardening. With containers, individuals can place the containers on a counter or table and do all the work at a comfortable height. Choosing low-maintenance plants is another option. Plants that dont require as much pruning or repotting are good for those with arthritis. Also, look for tools with larger grips and handles to be easier on arthritic hands. crAfting Many people with arthritis find the fine-detail work they grew accustomed to is not very comfortable with arthritis. Instead, there are many other crafts that can be practical. Ceramics are one craft where the activity can also be the exercise. Using a pottery wheel or handmolding doughs and other modeling media can be a way to stretch and work the hands and fingers. Using paintbrushes equipped with wider grips can make painting possible. Mural painting is another option. Again, those with arthritis can choose tools with wide handles to make grasping easier. Large designs on walls or canvases will be easier to handle than smaller pieces. cooking Cooking and baking is an art form that can be enjoyed by anyone. Furthermore, with ergonomic spoons, ladles and other kitchen tools, it has never been more convenient or less labor-intensive to be an accomplished home chef. Baking and pastry creation is one area where people can show off creative skills. For those who love to bake but have trouble kneading and working dough, food processors, bread machines and kitchen stand mixers can take the work out of those processes. Cooking is not only a rewarding hobby but also an activity that can benefit the household. Having arthritis doesnt mean a person has to give up on the activities he or she enjoys. It merely involves a few tweaks that can still make these hobbies enjoyable.

Container gardening is a hobby arthritis sufferers can enjoy.

healthy additions to your daily diet

According to a report from the American Heart Association Statistics Committee and Stroke Statistics Committee, heart disease figured to cost the United States in excess of $315 billion in 2010 alone. While theres no single cause of heart disease, a persons lifestyle can greatly reduce or increase his or her risk for heart disease. One of the best ways a man or woman can reduce the risk for heart disease is to watch what he or she eats. A poor diet can cause obesity and high cholesterol and increase a persons risk for diabetes. In a 2008 report, the National Center for Health Statistics noted that 33.9 percent of adults in the United States could qualify as overweight or obese in 2005-06. In addition, high blood pressure affected 30.5 percent of adults during that same time period. Being overweight or obese and having high blood pressure are risk factors for heart disease, and all can be controlled by adults who commit to changing their diets. Though there are risk factors for these conditions besides poor diet, maintaining a healthy diet is a big step for adults looking to reduce their risk of heart disease as well as a host of other ailments. When added to a diet, the following foods can help health-conscious men and women live healthier lives. Almonds: Almonds can help men and women control their weight and improve their heart health. Whats more, almonds, which are a good source of protein, fiber and vitamin E, might help reduce a persons risk of Alzheimers disease. Coffee: The medical community has varying opinions on coffee, but when consumed in moderate doses, coffee might help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and, for men, Parkinsons disease. Coffee might also help improve memory and mood, but adults should consult with their physician for advice as to the medical benefits of coffee. Grapes: Grapes are a great source of vitamin C and potassium. Grapes also provide a good dose of quercetin, which could help men and women strengthen their immune systems. Ginger: Men and women with arthritis might want to consider adding more ginger to their diets. Ginger has been linked to reducing arthritis pain, and can also help calm an upset stomach and quell nausea. Kale: Kale is often mistaken for spinach. While spinach is healthy, too, kale is among the many green vegetables that pack a powerful and nutritious punch. Kale is a strong source of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and lutein. In addition, kale is a good source of zeaxathan, which can help reduce the incidence of certain cancers and help maintain eyesight. Pecans: Like almonds, pecans are a good source of vitamin E, particularly a type of vitamin E known as gamma tocopherol. Pecans are also full of antioxidants, which can strengthen the bodys immune system. Sweet potatoes: Some might scoff at the notion that a food with the word sweet in its name can actually be healthy. However, sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamin A and vitamin C, and theyre also high in fiber. Sweet potatoes are also a great source of lycopene, which may help fight heart disease and even certain cancers.

Some foods can reduce risk for heart disease, other ailments
When it comes to getting healthy, men and women can look to several foods that may reduce their risks for a host of ailments, including heart disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women. But adults should consult with their physician before making any changes to their daily diets.

Grapes are a great source of vitamin C and potassium and could help men and women strengthen their immune systems.

5 ways to squash stress

Just about everyone at some point in time has experienced stress. Some suffer from stress powerful enough to have profound effects on daily life and personal health. A variety of strategies, from medication to meditation, can be effective at relieveing stress. Stress is not something easily defined. Thats because what is stressful to one person may roll off of anothers back. Various situations can trigger emotional responses in people. Very often these responses can escalate into stress that affects blood pressure, anxiety levels, mood, sleep patterns, and eating habits. The American Institute of Stress lists 50 different common signs and symptoms of stress. A few of those symptoms include: Frequent headaches Grinding teeth Neck ache Back pain Heartburn Obsessive behavior Overreaction to small annoyances Increased anger or frustration Rapid or mumbled speech Social withdrawal Excessive gambling or impulse buying Chest pain and palpitations Excessive anxiety or worry Stress can have distinct effects on health. There are a number of physical disorders and emotional effects that have been linked to stress. Heart attacks, hypertension, immune system disorders, anxiety, and depression have all been linked to excessive stress. Reducing stress has become a priority for many people looking to avoid health problems. There are many strategies people can take. Heres a look at five of them. 1. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR):A person starts from the face and works down the body by tensing all of the muscles in specific areas while inhaling and holding breath. Then he or she relaxs the muscles while exhaling. 2. Guided imagery: With the help of a recording or ones own imagination, a person pictures a relaxing scene with a possible guide answering profound questions. 3. Laughter: Laughing reduces the level of stress hormones, like epinephrine, dopamine, cortisol and others. It also increases endorphins. Laughter is a good distraction and also a mild workout. It contracts the ab muscles and works out the shoulders. 4. Music:Music can be used in many ways to reduce stress. Soft, peaceful music may help induce meditation and imagery. Upbeat music can get a person dancing, where the physical activity loosens muscles and relieves stress. 5. Sex: Sex can boost mood, reduce bood pressure, promote relaxation through touch and provide a physical workout. All of these factors are good for reducing stress.

Stress can take over a persons life. Making strides to reduce stress can improve physical and emotional health.

taking control of kids weight issues

Many parents are having conflicts with their children, and theyre not over doing homework or cleaning their rooms. The disagreements are about food and how many of todays youth need guidance about what they eat because of pronounced weight gain. Research indicates that in the United States 1 out of 3 children is now classified as overweight or obese. With less time spent exercising and more time spent in front of the television or with gaming consoles, children are packing on the pounds. Furthermore, with the harried pace many families keep -- including two-income households where there may not be ample time to prepare healthy, lower-fat meals -- fast food and convenience items have become the norm. According to reports from ABCNews, a young child who is obese has a 50 percent chance of becoming an obese adult if he or she is not given help. This also puts the child at risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes as an adult if the situation is not changed before adulthood. Experts advise against putting a child on an adult diet. Children have different nutritional needs and there needs to be enough food to fuel a growing body. Another thing that parents often contend with is picky eaters who are not apt to simply cut one thing out of a diet and replace it with a healthier alternative. A smarter idea is to consult with a pediatrician or a nutritionist who specializes in pediatrics. He or she can present a meal plan that fits with the dietary needs of the child but is also healthy enough to promote weight loss. Adult diets may harm a childs health because they limit certain things that a child needs to process vitamins and minerals, such as certain levels of fat. One of the best things to do is to get children moving. Regular exercise is an ideal way to burn off the calories and fat that is not needed. Implement daily activities, such as taking walks, playtime in the yard and sports games so that kids are moving instead of sitting in front of the television. Here are some other ideas that may work. Limit electronics use so that kids will have to get their fun from physical activities. Dont make a big deal about body weight. A 12-year study at Standford University found that parents who are very controlling about food put too much pressure on their children to be thin. This can lead to eating disorders. Parents who push diets may have children who are overweight years later. Eat regular meals as a family. Eating meals together instead of grazing and snacking can promote better eating habits. Remove unhealthy foods from the home. Kids will eat what is convenient. If there are no unhealthy snacks around, theyll have to choose from others, like fresh fruits and low-fat items. Serve meals from the stove. Portion out food items onto each persons plate instead of putting a large quantity of food in the middle of the table. This can help regulate portion sizes and prevent overeating. Dont make everything offlimits. Have a few splurgeitems around so that kids wont feel deprived. Low-fat frozen yogurt can satisfy like ice cream. Lower-fat cookies can replace the unhealthy kind. Chances are kids wont even realize theyre eating healthier. Skip sodas and sugary drinks. Encourage children to drink water, fruit juices and low-fat milk instead of filling up on sugary drinks. Parents can make their children feel loved and supported no matter their weight. Taking an interest in a childs health involves being aware of eating and food issues that can lead to obesity.

Guiding children on the right eating paths can help prevent adult obesity later on in life.

Allergy...from page 4
ing the swollen nasal tissues and blood vessels. This helps relieve the swelling, mucous secretion, redness, and congestion. Many allergy sufferers prefer nasal sprays and eye drops to relieve symptoms. However, such medications, which often require a prescription, can only be used for a few days. Use beyond a few days can actually make allergy symptoms worse. Not all men and women can use decongestants to relieve their allergy symptoms. Thats because decongestants may raise blood pressure, essentially making them off limits to those who already have high blood pressure. Additional potential side effects of decongestants are insomnia, irritability and restricted urinary flow. When considering a decongestant to relieve allergy symptoms, men and women should consult their physician before buying any products. steroiDs Thanks to professional sports, many people shudder at the mere mention of the word steroids. However, steroids used to treat allergies are corticosteroids and not the anabolic steroids athletes use to build muscle. Steroids used to treat allergies can be nasal (Flonase, Nasonex), inhaled (Flovent, Alvesco), eye drops (Alrex and Dexamethasone), or oral (Prednisone). Steroids work by reducing inflammation and swelling. Steroids can be highly effective in treating allergies, and work for seasonal and year-round allergies as well as skin allergies. When prescribed a steroid to treat an allergy, its important for men and women to continue to take the medication daily as directed, even if the symptoms of the allergy have disappeared. This can be as long as two weeks. Though highly effective, steroids do come with significant side effects. When taken orally, shortterm steroid use can cause weight gain, high blood pressure and fluid retention, while long-term use can result in muscle weakness, bone-thinning osteoporosis and even diabetes. When taking inhaled steroids, men and women might suffer from coughing, hoarseness or even develop a yeast infection in their mouth. Even though spring is commonly referred to as allergy season, men and women have a host of allergy treatment options to try. Before committing to any treatment, its best for a person to examine each option to determine which is the best fit for him or her.

how to manage medications at home

Turn on the television and youre likely to be inundated with commercials for the latest prescription medications that should be discussed with a doctor. According to Generation Rx: How Prescription Drugs Are Altering American Lives, Minds, and Bodies, by Greg Crister, the average number of prescriptions drugs taken per person, annually, in 2004 was 12. It is estimated that people will spend over $400 billion on prescription drugs by the end of 2011. Individuals who take multiple medications may find it difficult to manage them all. The challenge of managing medications can be difficult for anyone but particularly for seniors. Some organizational strategies and a little help from others may be the keys to getting meds straight. First and foremost, its important that doctors and pharmacists know of all the medications that are being taken. Its a good idea to use one pharmacy to fill prescriptions. This way it will have a record of medication use and can alert to drug interactions that may be dangerous, which could otherwise go undetected. And remember, over-the-counter supplements, vitamins and medicines count, too. They should be mentioned at the doctors office or, at the very least, when getting a new prescription filled at the pharmacy. Herbal remedies and other items -- even foods -- can interact with certain drugs. For example, its best to avoid grapefruit juice while taking many of the cholesterol-lowering statins available. Purchasing a medication organizer can be the next step to getting drugs in check. There are a number of different styles and sizes available. Seniors may want to enlist the help of a family member to sort through pills at the beginning of each week and place the right pills in each compartment. Knowing which days to take each medication is sometimes not enough. Certain medications must be taken at different intervals each day, often inviting confusion. A chart listing the times of each medication posted next to where the prescriptions are kept can help. A watch with a timer or an alarm clock can be programmed to chime as a reminder. Tech-savvy people can program smart phones or PDAs with reminders to alert when its time to take a pill. There are even advanced pill dispensing systems that can be programmed to dispense medication according to a set schedule. The Maya from MedMinder.com is one to consider or the Philips Medication Dispensing Service at ManageMyPills.com. People who are worried about an elderly relative can enlist the help of medication reminder services that can call or message a person to keep track of pills. They also may provide reminders about doctors appointments. There are a number of options available to help make organizing care a little easier. Safety should be the top priority when there are many different medications that need to be taken.

It can be challenging for many people to keep track of all the medications and supplements they need to take.

important health screenings for men

Health screenings are important for men of all ages. Whether youre a young man, middle-aged or enjoying your golden years, screening tests are an important part of staying healthy. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality offers the following screening test guidelines for men hoping to stay as healthy as possible as they age. Abdominal aortic aneurysm: Men between the ages of 65 and 75 who have ever been smokers should speak with their doctor about a screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm. This condition is a bulging in the abdominal aorta, the largest artery in the body. Should an abdominal aortic aneurysm burst, this can cause dangerous bleeding and possibly even death. Colorectal cancer: Men should start being screened for colorectal cancer at the age of 50. For men with a family history of colorectal cancer, it might be a good idea to get screened before the age of 50. There are different ways to screen for colorectal cancer, and the doctor will likely discuss the best screening for each individual patient. High blood pressure: Blood pressure should be checked at least every two years starting at the age of 18. High blood pressure, which is 140/90 or higher, can lead to a number of life threatening ailments, including strokes, heart failure, heart attacks, and kidney or eye problems, so its important for men of all ages to control their blood pressure and get regular screenings. High cholesterol: Men 35 years of age and older should have their cholesterol checked annually. Younger men who make certain lifestyle choices or have existing medical conditions should have their cholesterol checked starting at age 20. This includes young men who use tobacco, are obese, have diabetes, have a personal history of heart disease, or have a male family member who had a heart attack before age 50, or a female relative who had a heart attack before age 60. Diabetes: Men should get screened for diabetes if their blood pressure is higher than 135/80 or if they take medication for high blood pressure. Depression: Many men might not know it, but there are screenings for depression. Men concerned about depression should speak with their physician if they have felt down, sad or hopeless or if they have felt little interest or pleasure in doing things.

how to improve your memory

Everyone forgets something from time to time. Whether its misplacing car keys or missing a doctors appointment, no man or woman is immune from forgetful moments. For some men and women, however, memory loss goes beyond routine forgetfulness. Should men and women find themselves growing increasingly forgetful, there are ways to improve memory, regardless of an individuals age. Thanks to the human brains ability to adapt and change, men and women can improve their memories by employing a few simple strategies and exercises. Routinely get a good nights sleep. The brain needs adequate sleep to operate at full capacity. For students, its important to keep in mind that without adequate sleep, the brains ability to solve problems or think critically is greatly compromised. Research has shown that essential memory-enhancing activity occurs during the deepest stages of sleep. Men and women both young and old can improve memory by routinely getting a good nights sleep. Exercise. Exercise is beneficial in many ways, but men and women might not know the effects routine exercise can have on memory. Exercise increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, which reduces the risk for disorders that can lead to memory loss. Cardiovascular exercise that increases oxygen flow to the brain can reduce risk for stroke and diabetes while simultaneously improving memory. Work to reduce stress. Stress is harmful in a number of ways, and memory loss is no exception. The hippocampus is a region of the brain thought to be responsible for memory. When men and women are stressed and do nothing to positively address that stress, the hippocampus is damaged, negatively affecting the brains ability to form new memories. Men and women can reduce stress in a number of ways, including daily exercise and eating a healthy diet. In addition, coping with stress in a healthy way, such as through exercise or even meditation, and not through unhealthy, harmful channels like consuming alcohol or overeating, can greatly improve quality of life and help improve memory as well. Eat right. What you eat can also impact what you remember. An unhealthy diet can be just as harmful to the brain as it can be to the rest of the body. While its best discuss any potential dietary changes with a physician first, look for foods that are not high in saturated fat. Foods high in saturated fat increase a persons risk of dementia and make it harder for a person to concentrate and remember things. Other foods that researchers are finding to be brain-friendly are those that contain omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are especially beneficial to brain health and researchers feel might also help a person lower his or her risk for Alzheimers disease. Men and women can take omega-3 supplements or look for foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including fish like salmon, tuna, halibut, and trout. Men and women looking to improve memory should also start including more fruits and vegetables in their daily diets. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants, which protect brain cells. Green vegetables like spinach and broccoli, and fruits like apricots and even watermelon are rich in antioxidants that can help men and women protect their brain cells and improve memory at the same time. Memory loss is often seen as an inevitable side effect of aging. However, people can take several steps that improve memory and overall health at the same time.

Routine exercise increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, which can reduce the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss.
