OKLAHOMA TOWNSITE COLLECTION OKLAHOMA TOWNSITE COLLECTION

92 reels mm 92 reels mm This collection provides valuable primary resource material on the early development of Oklahoma towns. Following the historic land openings in Oklahoma, beginning in 1889, participants staked claims for homesteads and town lots. Many of the lands claimed by settlers were involved in ownership disputes. The settlement of these cases ultimately fell on land offices and the federal court system. These vital documents represent the establishment of 156 towns following the 1889 Land Run and later land openings in Oklahoma Territory. These documents originally used as evidence in the courts include townsite maps, hearing transcripts, deeds, land office records, photographs, receipts, city council meeting minutes, letters, ledgers, and depositionsin all more than 100,000 records.

Awardees notified shortly thereafter. The awards will be available for use during the 2011-12 academic year.

A subcommittee of Friends of the Library and UCO Governing Board members and UCO librarians will judge the applications.
