II ) Definition of terms
A. Social networking site
Now that the technological era is in its peak, the computer and items pertaining to the industry reign supreme. This 'regime of the networks' will last because their uses are vastly increasing to a seemingly infinite number. One product of our fast paced environment and innovative thinking of man that everyone is fascinated is the Social Networking sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them. The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits in using it. Another one of those benefits includes diversity because the internet gives individuals from all around the world access to social networking sites. This means that although you are in the United States, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Denmark or India. Not only will you make new friends, but you just might learn a thing or two about new cultures or new languages because learning is always a good thing. As mentioned, social networking often involves grouping specific individuals or organizations together. While there are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular interests, there are others that do not. The websites without a main focus are often referred to as "traditional" social networking websites and usually have open memberships. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to create your own network of friends and eliminate members that do not share common interests or goals. As I'm sure you're aware, there are dangers associated with social networking including data theft and viruses, which are on the rise. The most prevalent danger though often involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists in the real world, too. Just like you're advised when meeting strangers at clubs and bars, school, or work -- you are also advised to proceed with caution online. By being aware of your cyber-surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. It will take many phone conversations to get to know someone, but you really won't be able to make a clear judgment until you can meet each other in person. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn't feel right about the online conversations taking place. Once you are well informed and comfortable with your findings, you can begin your search from hundreds of networking communities to join. This can easily be done by performing a standard internet search. Your search will likely return a number of results, including MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and Classmates.

B. Popular Social Networking Sites

Facebook
Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. The site, which is available in 37 different languages, includes public features such as:

Marketplace - allows members to post, read and respond to classified ads. Groups - allows members who have common interests to find each other and interact. Events - allows members to publicize an event, invite guests and track who plans to attend. Pages - allows members to create and promote a public page built around a specific topic. Presence technology - allows members to see which contacts are online and chat.

Twitter
Twitter is a free social networking microblogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts called tweets. Twitter members can broadcast tweets and follow other users' tweets by using multiple platforms and devices. Tweets and replies to tweets can be sent by cell phone text message, desktop client or by posting at the Twitter.com website. The default settings for Twitter are public. Unlike Facebook or LinkedIn, where members need to approve social connections, anyone can follow anyone on publicTwitter. To weave tweets into a conversation thread or connect them to a general topic, members can add hashtags to a keyword in their post. The hashtag, which acts like a meta tag, is expressed as #keyword. Tweets, which may include hyperlinks, are limited to 140 characters, due to the constraints of Twitter's Short Message Service (SMS) delivery system. Because tweets can be delivered to followers in real time, they might seem like instant messages to the novice user. But unlike IMs that disappear when the user closes the application, tweets are also posted on the Twitter website. They are permanent, they are searchable and they are public. Anyone can search tweets on Twitter, whether they are a member or not.

MySpace
Originally founded as a venue for aspiring musicians and bands to share music and concert dates, MySpace has grown into a complex site where users can create profiles, including photographs, blog s, music or movie preferences. Other features of the site include chat

rooms, forums, classified ads, newsgroups and a venue for sharing videos or music. Each user can choose to invite friends to create profiles or link to existing ones, creating a social network that can be exponentially expanded as users with similar tastes, interests or shared friends are discovered and added. Extremely popular with teenagers and young adults, MySpace.com has seen explosive growth in recent years, with a current base of over 59 million users, reflecting both broader cultural trends offline and a unique culture online. Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp purchased the site in 2005 for $580 million dollars.

Multiply
It is one of the social networking sites that allow users to share videos, photos, make an entry of your blog or leave a comment to your friends and social network friends. This will also serve as direct contacts of your social network friends. With this social network site, it is possible to share content only to specified contacts such as friends, family, online buddies, etc and can limit whether it is public or private only (each item or post you made). Blog You can write what you want; it is your own blog Photo Sharing The number of photos you can upload is unlimited and you have the ability to share it to specific persons (whether private or public). Videos It is easy to upload videos from metacaf, photobucket, google video or youtube. Calendar Talks about an event or appointments. Review You can add and make a review of the specified products. Music It is great to upload your favorite music. Links Share your favorite links or you find out an interesting site. Contacts This would be a place for your friends. Groups This will provide the way to meet others through groups. Guestbook Leave any comments and suggestions. It is great to be part of a social networking site like Multiply.

Friendster
Friendster is a social networking website. Its headquarters are in Mountain View, California. The service allows users to contact other members, maintain those contacts, and share online content and media with those contacts. The website is also used for dating and discovering new events, bands, and hobbies. Users may share videos, photos, messages and comments with other members via their profile and their network. Friendster has over 115 million registered users and over 61 million unique visitors a month globally. The website receives approximately 19 billion page views per month, and is in the top 600 global websites based on web traffic.

Over 90% of Friendster's traffic comes from Asia. In Asia, Friendster has more monthly unique visitors than any other social network. The top 10 countries accessing Friendster, according to Alexa, as of May 7, 2009 are Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Sudan, South Korea, Bangladesh and India.

III ) Presentation and Interpretation of Data

According to my survey, this data shows that all of them know what a social networking site is. Because of the influence of new technologies and media many of us know about what a social networking site is. Social Networking sites are very popular all over the world so all of us probably knows it.

B.The Most visted networking sites

According to my gathered data from my survey sheet, The facebook site got the highest votes for the most visited site because its now very popular and its one of the best social networking site all over the world. Because of its popularity many of us are influence by it so its the top 1 site in my research. The second site is Friendster which is one of the first networking site introduced but because of the development of other sites such as facebook, it is no longer used. The third highest vote is Twitter, the development of twitter is the same year where facebook is developed because of that, the twitter is not well liked. The next sites is followed by myspace and multiply and other sites which is not commonly used.

C. Hours and Days in how they spend in using Social networking sites

In this data, it shows that the highest time spend for using the sites is 1 hour. Because 1 hour is enough when you are just chatting with others, posting some status and upload some photos base in my data gathered. The second highest vote is 2 hours because some survey sheet Ive gathered is that 1 hour is not enough to do a lot more in Social networking sites. 6,5 and 3 hours got the same votes while 4 hours got the lowest vote.

The data shows that the highest vote is every day, because they want to be updated and to communicate with friends regularly. The second highest vote is once a week, because they are not very addicted on it and do not have enough time for that. And the other two which are thrice and twice a week have equally divided votes because they just want to spend their time for other things. The 2 lowest vote which are four times and five times a week.

D. Result for the question, Can you live a day without visiting Social Networking sites

Percentage Yes = 88% No = 12%

In this Graph more of them can live without visiting social networking site, because it just only a social networking site and its not very important in our life. The reason for the people of answer no is they addicted on it.

IV ) Body
A ) Brief Guide to Social Networking Addiction
Social Networking Addiction is a mental illness centered around a dependency of online FRIENDS or online interaction on social networks. Social Networking Addicts are unable to control their tendency to be logged in and participating on social networking websites.
What are some characteristics of Social Networking Addiction? Some of the most common characteristics of Social Networking Addiction are:

A feeling that being online is the only way to be noticed by the world at large. The longing for another post, update, or chat session (otherwise known as SNEAKING) before they sleep. A strong anticipation to being logged onto their social network of choice and seeing what everyone in their network is doing. Episodes of logging onto their social network randomly while in the middle of something completely different. Attempts to control their addiction by changing social networks. For example jumping from Myspace to Facebook. SNEAKING for long periods of time. Deleting wall posts so that others dont notice their excessive amount of posts or updates. Binge SNEAKING and sleepless nights due to SNEAKING. Drowsiness the next day from long nights of SNEAKING. What is S.N.A?

Social Networking Anonymous (S.N.A) is an online community of men, women, boys, and girls who help each other control their social networking addiction. They offer support to everyone and anyone who is ready to face their Social Networking Addiction and SNEAKING habits. They all have a unique understanding of each other because people on the site are all social networking addicts, except for the online friends of addicts who join for moral support of a Social Networking Addict. S.N.A members say that they are currently social networking addicts even when they have not been online for many hours, days, or months. They dont believe that they can be completely free of their addiction because it is literally at their fingertips. Once people have lost the ability to control their SNEAKING, they can never become former

social networking addicts or ex-social networking addicts. But in S.N.A, they can become recovering social networking addicts.

B ) T he Advantages of Social Networ king

The advantages of social networking are real, even though most parents see it as another way that kids waste time. Social networking has opened up a new way to communicate, so while your child's posts may not be essential today, your child is still learning skills that could be very valuable tomorrow. Work Connections One form of social networking that's growing in popularity is corporate social networking. You can use corporate social networking to form relationships with other people from your company, or people in other companies in an industry. You can also get references and build a reputation using corporate social networking tools. It's a great way to get yourself known and network in your field or industry. Keeping in Touch Social networking provides a great way for you to stay in touch with people who may have moved away. Normally, people try to stay in touch with friends via phone calls and the occasional letter or e-mail, but busy lives make it difficult to maintain contact. However, social networking is such a regularly used medium that it's easy to stay in touch with people even when they move away. Get Feedback you can use social networking to get feedback on ideas immediately, or to ask questions and get answers quickly. If you're developing a product or even just an idea, you can bounce it off your friends and social networking contacts and find out what they think about it. You can also ask questions and receive answers in near-real-time, if your contacts know the answer or if you're a student in touch with teachers. Share Multiple Points of View Sheltered individuals may not understand how many different points of view that people have, and that it's possible for people to hold drastically different beliefs. Social networking helps you learn about diversity and get exposure to multiple points of view. Ultimately, this exposure can help you to learn to look at things from different angles, and be more tolerant of other people's opinions, things that go a long way in the working world. Talking to Other Students many student organizations have specific social networks designed to help students connect. Social networking tools can be a great way for students to get in touch with other students in the same school, or when they're considering a college or new school. Check with student organizations to see if they have a particular social networking tool, or

type the school into your favorite social networking Web site and see what you find. Stay in Touch Anywhere Mobile social networking is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people have cell phones capable of running social networking applications. People can use mobile social networking tools to stay in touch with friends, and make plans on the fly. Mobile social networking tools are also great if you've got a long train or subway commute and want to stay in touch with friends and find out what they're doing. Kids do need to learn to keep social networking under control. Some people get hooked on social networking, to the point that it interferes with getting things done. Teach your child when it is and isn't appropriate to use mobile social networking, and set a strict time limit for communicating at home. Low Costs Definitely, its cheaper to use online social networking for both personal and business use because most of it is usually free. While personal use is rather simple for anyone, the business functions are underestimated by many. In asocial networking site, you can scout out potential customers and target markets with just a few clicks and keystrokes, adding a boost to your usual advertisements and promotional strategies. It lets you learn about their likes and dislikes, which is tremendous. If you want to fine tune your business, then this is the way to go, whether on a budget or not. Builds Credibility You definitely can gain the customers confidence if you can connect to them on both a personal and professional level. Despite having to do a bit of work, it definitely pays off as you can be tapped for an offer if someone catches wind of your products or services. As long as you dont pursue them too aggressively, you will do well here. Connections You are friends with people who have other friends, and so on. There is potential in such a common situation. By using a social networking site, you can do what you can and get connected with these people to form a web of connections that can give you leverage if you play your cards right. As long as you give as well as you receive, then they will most likely stick with you. These connections are definitely valuable in the long run.

C ) T he Disadvantages of Social Networ king

The most glaring disadvantage of social networking sites is the risk of identity theft and fraud. The personal information of users can be used by dubious people for illegal activities. Information like the e-mail address, name, location, and age can be used to commit online crimes. Also, many people pretend to be someone else and prepare their online profiles with false information, so as to dupe unsuspecting users. So, if you do not know the person face to face then it will be very hard for you to find the real identity. Another cause of concern is cases of online harassment and stalking. Since the social networking sites, are very poorly regulated so it can be a very fertile ground for people trying to get even with you. They can spread malicious humor among your friends and also download and morph your photos Other disadvantages Lack of Anonymity You are putting out information about your name, location, age, gender, and many other types of information that you may not want to let others know. Most people would say be careful, but no one can be certain at any given time. As long as people can know who you exactly are, then some can find ways to do you in. Scams and Harassment There is a potential for failure of security in both personal and business context. While many sites apply certain measures to keep any of these cases of harassment, cyber-stalking, online scams, and identity theft to an absolute minimum, you still may never know. Time Consuming If this is not your kind of thing that it would just be a waste of time for you. The key to social networking is that it is supposed to be fun, whether you are just doing it for kicks or clicking around for business purposes. That should be reasonable enough for anyone, but there are those people who dont see the point. For them, it can be a disadvantage. Now theres something to really think about. Nothing is without a blemish, but those of social networking shouldnt really be that much of a concern regarding your safety. As long as you go along without making big mistakes, then it is all good. You can take advantage of the Internet phenomenon that continues up to this day. Social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc, are often being used by people around the world. As many of you know, Facebook users sooner or later get addicted to Facebook , and can spend hours connecting with friends. Despite having advantages, there are many disadvantages that may cause problems to our lives, but at least if we know about those disadvantages, we can stop it from harming our lives.

First of all, spending hours in front of the computer will lead to many health problems such as, shoulder and back pain, as well as, eye sight problems. And, whenever we are free, we log on to these social networking sites, leaving us with lesser time to spend with our family. Next, our attitude may also change. For example, you are sitting in front of your computer, and its midnight. Your mom comes in shouting, Enough of Facebook!! Go to sleep NOW!. You may shout back You dont own my life!!. This attitude may cause problems in relationships of your life. Lastly, your information, such as your phone number, or address, can be hacked by a stranger, that may lead you to trouble. Social networking sites are enjoyable, but you should use your time wisely, and make sure they dont create problems in your life. Once you understand the advantages and disadvantages of social networking, then you can cruise through without fail.

V ) Conclusion

I therefore conclude that Social Networking Addiction is harmful in our own well-being. We can never blame what Technology brings us. It is our own decision when to stop. We should never give priority in things that are not important like this. Neglecting our obligations and responsibilities is one result if we are addicted in social networking which could bring us distress. We should be more responsible in managing our time and controlling ourselves in things we are doing that can be addictive.
