Our ExpEriEnCE Since 1968 we have been providing private home care for the elderly and the infirm. This can be extremely demanding on family and friends. Our Carers and Companions are very flexible and the service we provide is tailor-made to suit your needs and requirements. Rarely is there a situation beyond their experience or capabilities. Our aims To provide Carers and Companions who look after you with the greatest of care, respect and understanding, maintaining your dignity and independence. To ensure a continuity of Carers and Companions that you look forward to seeing on a regular basis. As time goes by, a trusting and friendly relationship will develop between you, giving you peace of mind and the reassurance that you can continue to live in your own home. Our Carers and Companions are all very experienced and their details are rigorously checked by the Agency. Our dedicated team work tirelessly to plan a personal diary of live-in Carers and Companions. TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

New year, new starts

FIRST of all the Parish Council would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year.

HAPP Y EAR NEW Y

Thank you to all the people who attended our Christmas lights event on Friday 2nd December to sing carols; see Father Christmas; bless the crib; and not least of all, to see the lights being turned on in the chestnut tree. Thank you also to everyone who made the event possible. It was a real community effort. Thank you also for your support of the charities who had stalls, Inner Wheel raised 115 for Childlline; the League of Friends raised almost 300 for Tarporley Hospital and the Rotary collected in over 100 from their hot chestnuts. l Our new Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) James McLaughlin has now started work in the village, so you can expect to see him in and around the village, and you may well see him on the High Street on the look out for cars parked on the white zig zag lines either side of the pelican crossing or on the double yellow lines. He has been a PCSO in Frodsham for a number of years, and so has plenty of experience in his role as a PCSO. His post is part paid by the Parish Council. l Another new appointment in the village is that of head teacher at Tarporley C E Primary School. Following the decision of Vince OBrien to go on to pastures new at the end of the Autumn term, the Schools Governing body was pleased to announce in December the appointment of Mrs Kerry Forrester as the new Head Teacher. She will be the new Head Teacher from 1st April 2012. Mrs Forrester is an experienced head, presently working in Frodsham. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the children, staff, parents, Governors, St Helens Church and the wider community of Tarporley. During the Spring term Mrs Anne Barnett ex Head of Utkinton Primary will be acting head. l We have had a number of frosty mornings and our linesman and the gritting volunteers have been out putting grit on the pavements and paths. There are a number of grit bins around the village, but please can I remind everyone that the grit in them is for use on public roads and pavements. It is not for use on private pathways and drives. Personal supplies of grit can be purchased from Tarporley DIY. If you would like to volunteer to grit the pavements and paths in your area of the village, please get in touch with the Parish Clerk on Tel 01829 733496. Training, grit and other equipment are supplied by the Parish Council. We wish everyone a healthy and happy 2012. Do come along to our meetings at the Community Centre at 7pm on the second Monday evening of the month. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398

Ask the experts at Tarporley Health Store

www.healthstore247.co.uk

Should I take a gender-specific multivitamin and mineral formula? Men and women have dierent nutritional requirements. Their diets are often quite diverse and their needs for specic nutrients are dierent too. It therefore makes sense when choosing nutritional supplements to take these dierences into consideration. Which nutrients should be featured in a supplement for women? There are a few nutrients that are specically needed by men or women in diering amounts. One such example is iron. Women are especially prone to iron deciency during their reproductive years because of repeated blood losses during menstruation. It is therefore important that women of childbearing age have an adequate supply of iron and other blood-building nutrients, such as vitamin B12 and folic acid. Folic acid is also vital for all women of child-bearing age in order to support the healthy development of a foetus. A good multi-nutrient formula for women should contain these nutrients in easily absorbed forms. The minerals calcium, magnesium and zinc support bone health and are often found in very small amounts in multi-nutrient formulas. A good supplement will contain more signicant levels of these vital minerals.

Which nutrients should be featured in a supplement for men? Heart disease is considerably more prevalent in men and the latest research into the causes of heart disease has centred on a substance called homocysteine. Low levels of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid can lead to a rise in homocysteine levels in the bloodstream. A high homocysteine level is thought to contribute to arterial damage which may lead to heart attacks and strokes. Ensuring a good supply of B vitamins from a good multi-nutrient formula is vital for any man wanting to maintain good cardiovascular health. As men age, disorders of the prostate gland become increasingly common. Scientic research has shown that zinc and selenium play vital roles in maintaining prostate health. Incidentally, a multi-nutrient for men should contain little or no iron as men generally require less of this mineral. All these nutrients can be found together in Female and Male Multiple.

Falcon spreads its wings

The team at Falcon have over 60 years experience in the fire and flood restoration sector of the insurance industry. As a result, Falcon Building Services has a number of divisions, each of which specialise in some aspect of restoration, whether it be in the building sector of our business, or in this, the carpet and upholstery cleaning sector. Thanks to their levels of experience and professionalism, Falcon enjoys approved contractor status with a significant number of leading domestic and commercial insurers.

Carpet Cleaning
Having established themselves as a local carpet cleaning business in the early 1990s, the management team at Falcon made the decision to purchase several ChemDry franchise areas throughout the North West and North Wales. Having purchased the franchises, the team at Falcon took maximum advantage of the training packages that were offered to them, ensuring that all the Falcon staff were trained to an extremely high standard in all aspects of carpet cleaning and associated services. Falcon maintained this relationship with ChemDry for over a decade, continuously striving to improve the service they could offer. As circumstances changed, and the franchise model evolved, the Falcon management team decided that the ChemDry franchise practises were too restrictive and they took the decision to move away from this arrangement and seek to establish themselves as an independent company that was able to make the most of the business practises developed in conjunction with a multi-national company, whilst concentrating on a more customer-focused approach to doing business. We value the confidence weve gained through the many years of our blue-chip relationships, this means we are used to getting it right first time, every time. This decision has been rewarded with an increase in business secured through a combination of a local advertising campaign and personal recommendations from satisfied clients, both existing and new. Our domestic coverage extends throughout the North West and beyond, from Carlisle in the North to Stoke-on-Trent in the South and from Anglesey in the West to Hull in the East. Clearly, we have a bias towards cleaning carpets, upholstery, ceramic tiles and other hard floor surfaces but we are also in a position to provide additional products and services which include all manner of property cleaning requirements. From the point of your initial contact with Falcon, we hope that you will be impressed with our business methods and we trust that you will be suitably satisfied with the results that our technicians will achieve with your carpets. We endeavour to provide a comprehensive service which meets the needs and expectations of our valued existing and potential new clients.

We are always happy to help. Give us a call on 0800 046 1991

Salon Vie Faces Off The Competition

Organised by American Crew, the worlds leading manufacturer of professional male grooming products, Face Off is a black and white photographic competition showcasing the latest fashion styles and the very best in mens grooming. The Face Off finalists party was held at The Point in Manchester where American Crew put on a dazzling catwalk show prior to the finalists being announced and taking to the stage. In 2012, the twenty UK finalists will attend a lunch at a top London venue where three winners will be chosen for a trip to LA which will include a professional photo shoot with American Crew Founder and Creative Director, David Raccuglia. Jane said: I've really enjoyed being a part of this exciting competition. It's a great opportunity for me to showcase both the high standard of work and the passion for hairdressing that I share with the entire Salon Vie team. American Crew brand manager Mark Shorrock says: The high level of interest and standard of entry for this years Face Off reflects the value of entering this type of competition and has helped to establish it as a firm fixture in the British hairdressing awards calendar. Our congratulations go to all the finalists and we look forward to announcing the three winners in the New Year. This is a terrific result for Jane, the only finalist from a North West salon. New faces, same fabulous food at Christianos Italian restaurant

ormaN rose and family have recently taken over the Italian restaurant Christianos in Tarporley High Street. The rose family have been in the restuarant business for many years, and have a wealth of catering and restaurant experience, so you can be assured of an exceptional dining experience. They have decorated and fully refurbished the old restaurant, and offer many Italian specialities. Christianos is currently in its 10th year of trading. With people travelling far and wide to visit us, we strive to provide a sense of Italian warmth upon arrival treating every customer as part of the family. The restaurant has a well known reputation for serving the finest fillet steaks around and also for our trademark dish Gambas Christianos along with our pizza and pasta range which is consistently mouth watering. With the same two chefs for ten years which some would say is unheard of in catering, we thrive on new ideas with daily specials and a full a la carte menu - which you will find on this website. with Angela Bartlett
Q. I suffer from blackheads and have been told to avoid comedogenic ingredients. What are they exactly? A. It may surprise you to know that not all ingredients included in some skin care products are to benefit your skin but are there to produce a pleasing product when you smell it or test it on the back of your hand! Some ingredients are known to cause congestion and are termed comedogenic which means black-head forming, this is bad news if you suffer from blackheads, open pores or skin congestion. Always look for products that state they are non-comedogenic and at the ingredients label. For more information on the most common blackhead forming ingredients visit the January newsletter page of our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk Q. How long can I keep a skin care product before it goes off or becomes inactive? A. How many of us have jars and tubes of unused or opened products in our cupboards and wonder if they are still ok to use? Quite a few! If the product is unopened look for the small Open-Jar symbol which was adopted in Europe in 2003. The symbol will be accompanied by a Period After Opening (PAO) number which will show the number of months a product can be used before discarding. This is usually between 12 and 24 months. In addition to the PAO there will often be an expiry date for any products which are classed as Over-the-Counter (OTC) Drug formulations, these include sunscreens and some anti-bacterial acne formulations. This is irrespective to whether the product has been opened or not. Hope this helps!

From Peckforton to the Pa

TOM Bruce must have thighs of steel after completing a ninemonth round the world bike tour! Tom, 24, set out in March to cycle 23.000 miles around the world in aid of the charity SOS Childrens Villages. The former Tarporley High School student set off from his Peckforton home before heading off across mainland Europe. His journey saw him travel through France, Switzerland and Germany, to the Danube River and the Black Sea. From there he cycled through Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan to the Caspian Sea, which he crossed to Kazakhstan. A long crossing of the Kazakh Steppe and the Karakalpakstan desert crossing brought him to Uzbekistan. Next up was the high altitude Pamir Highway in Tajikistan and Kyrgystan. Then into Kazakhstan again before a two month crossing of China through Xinjang province, along the Great Wall through inner Mongolia to Beijing.

Pacific: Toms epic bike trip

After China, he took a flight across the Pacific to North America where he cycled from San Francisco to Florida via California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi. Tom, who is the son of Tarporley GP Dr Jackie Griffin, hopes to have raised money for SOS Childrens Villages, which is the largest orphan and abandoned childrens charity in the world. They provide a home for more than 78,000 children in 500 unique Childrens Villages in 124 countries.

Girls in step for exam success

MORE than 50 students from Pointe Works Ballet School took part in Royal Academy Ballet examinations at The Jessie Hughes Village Hall in Eaton. An examiner travelled from London to watch the children perform their ballet and was very impressed with the facilities in the new hall. Each student has spent a year studying the syllabus for each grade and has worked extremely hard to perfect both technique and performance. The pre-primary groups entertained the examiner with their interpretation of The Nutcracker while the primary children showed off their bouncing ball dance. The students will receive certificates and medals when the results come through in January. Owner of Pointe Works, Nicolle Higgins said: Exam entries this year were double that of last year which is fabulous. The children did a fantastic job, showing their very best work to an examiner who had also studied with the Royal Ballet, so fingers crossed for another cracking set of results. For further information on Pointe Works ballet classes visit www.pointeworks.co.uk The children in the photo from left to right are: Amelie, Abigail, Harriet and Evie all aged six. 54 To advertise call 01244 350398

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC

Players return fails to stem the tide for rock bottom Vics
TARPORLEY Vics First Team remains rooted to the foot of the Cheshire league Division One table after losing all three games in the last month. The return to the squad of some familiar faces, including Craig Phelan & Alex Moore have improved the level of performance and made the games more even however the lack of goals is the main reason for the three defeats. The games against Greenhalls-Padgate, Denton and Middlewich saw Tarporley Vics only score two goals with the goals against amounting to seven. On a positive note Steve Lloyds other football managerial role, as coach of the Cheshire League representative side, is still progressing well. The side cruised through to the Quarter Finals of the National League Cup after defeating a Cambridgeshire League representative side 1-0 at Witton Albions ground, with the team including Nick Abson and Al Rowntree in the starting eleven. They will now face either the Midland Combination League or Lincolnshire County League in a New Year fixture for a place in the Semi Final. Good luck to Steve and all the players, especially those from Tarporley, as they represent Cheshire in this prestigious completion. Tarporley Vics Reserves have moved up into sixth position in the Crewe & District Combined League after having won one and drawn one league game in the period. The Reserves were defeated 2-1 in the League Cup by Rudheath Social First Team. Tarporley Vics veterans side The Playboys showed a Wrexham Eleven the way to goal as they won 11-3 recently. The game included two hat-tricks and Tarporley fielded a strong sixteen man squad. News of the successes is spreading, and requests are coming in for more games! We need more players to facilitate these requests as one game a month is all some of us can manage, therefore any Over 35s who fancy turning out in Blue & Black please do not hesitate to contact our Gaffa Sean Taylor on 07855863978! Good luck to all of the squads as we enter January and try to help the First Team to secure Division One status. Thanks to everyone who was involved with Tarporley Vics over the past twelve months, especially the management committee and sponsors without whose support and financial assistance Tarporley Vics would not continue to flourish. 2012 promises to be a special year for Tarporley Vics and any new help will be welcomed as we look to further develop opportunities for everyone to play Football within our Village For further information on training or sponsorship opportunities please view our website tarporleyvics.co.uk. Its never too late to learn!

OLdER people are fast becoming as web savvy as their younger counterparts. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in the year 2000, just 11% of one person households (over the state pensionable age) had Internet access and now that figure stands at almost 40%, with the average amount of time spent on the Internet, being 33 hours per week an hour more than any other age group. Older people are now not only using the Internet as a resource, but as an essential communication tool - with nearly one in five older Internet users regularly using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The emergence of Skype has also added to the influx of older people getting online, as they increasingly use the Internet to keep in touch with family and friends. This has provided a lifeline to the Silver surfers, as they are affectionately known, who live far away from family or who cannot leave their homes easily. despite this very positive increase, there are still nearly 6 million older people who are not yet online. A recent survey has shown that one in four of these people have stated that it would be a good way to stay in touch if they were, which goes to show that many simply dont know where to start or are under the impression that its not for them.

Wine talk
with Gill nicol, from enigma Wine
THIS month Ill be recommending three wines that are excellent value for money, especially when on offer and therefore perfect for January when money is tight after the overindulgence of Christmas & New Year. The Ogio Primitivo from Tesco (usually 8.99 but often to be found on offer at 4.99) is from a region called Puglia in the south of Italy. A hot Mediterranean climate produces this soft easy, drinking red with hints of spice, coconut and 01244 forest fruits on the nose which is followed through on the palatet.with well 370 898 m. 07964 588 453 balanced tannins and some mysterious dried fruit character. A e. info@enigmawine.co.uk soothing red wine that is perfect with a selection of Italian cold meats, cheese & w. www.enigmawine.co.uk olives, just to remind us of those warmer months to come. Another of my favourite grapes is the Albarino grape from the cooler parts of north western Spain and northern Portugal. Sainsburys Taste The Difference Albarino is a gem at 7.99 (often found on offer for 6.99) if youre looking for something a bit different to try. This is an aromatic, peachy perfumy white that has flavours of fresh fruits, especially pineapple and citrus on the palate. A lovely fresh style of white that is traditionally paired with seafood, so why not try it with a chilli prawn linguine or a simple pasta salad with pesto and prawns. Finally Id like to recommend something that people are always a bit nervous to try and that is a dessert wine. The half bottle of Conch Y Toro late harvest Sauvignon Blanc is less than a fiver if you buy more than two Chilean still wines from Majestic together. Golden yellow in colour with a luscious, syrupy texture, this wine has aromas reminiscent of ripe tropical fruits and a honeyed, yet fresh palate. An excellent introduction to dessert wine and well worth the risk! I love this with caramelised fruits and ice cream pancakes!

Our tastings are fun, informative and sociable events where you get to taste and learn about wines from all over the world. Traders help childrens hospice

BOTTEGA, Tarporley and Claire House Childrens Hospice worked together with retailers on Tarporley High Street in a quest to raise enough money to provide Christmas lunches, decorations and crackers for all the children at Claire House Hospice. Tarporley shops and retailers donated a variety of products, goodies and vouchers to create an amazing Christmas Hamper that was raffled off the week before Christmas. Sam Brightmore, owner of Bottega said: Claire House is an incredible charity helping both children with life limiting problems and their families. We are so excited that we can make a difference. Abi Smith from Claire House joined in the festivities, adding: Not

only will the money raised be a huge help for us and our children but we are also excited about gaining exposure for Claire House in the Tarporley area.
Other retailers who took part were: Caran DAche, Follies, Helen Venables Photography, Nino Kids, No.77 Interiors, Piste Wine Bar, Shoe Shack, Skin Deep, Tarporley DIY, The Birdcage Cafe and Watson Wynne Hairdressing
