ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
The organizations tagline says it alluniting people of faith--serving people in need. Founded in 1905, the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches (www.gmcc.org) is the largest council of churches in North America with 700 member congregations and representing 600,000 individuals. These congregations represent 25 different Christian denominations--the organization also has cooperative working relationships with many other faiths. The GMCC organization is the largest volunteer organization in Minnesota, with 25,000 volunteers who, along with around 100 staff members, impact 358,000 people each year in the Twin Cities and throughout the Upper Midwest. GMCC seeks to make a positive impact in several outcome areas: fighting hunger, helping seniors live independently, nurturing healthy families, empowering urban American Indians, ensuring school success, reducing crime and building a caring community. The organization accomplishes this through a broad array of programs including: Division of Indian Work-In partnership with GMCC, the Division of Indian Work serves the social needs of urban American Indians while honoring cultural tradition through four distinct program areas: Healing Spirit, Health Services, Strengthening Family Circles and Youth Leadership Development Program.

HandyWorks-Provides house and yard chore services for low-income seniors and those with permanent physical disabilities. Kinship-Provides children, ages 5 to 15, with caring adult mentors. Community Justice Project-Reduces crime and recidivism by mentoring ex-offenders.

Project Persevere-Reconnects parents cut off from monthly government assistance with job counselors and benefits. Discover Learning Centers/Supplemental Educational Services-Tutoring provided through local congregations for students in schools that have not met state targets for adequate yearly progress. GMCC is proud to partner with other organizations to serve those in need. Examples of Community Collaborations include: Clinical Pastoral Education which trains seminarians, pastors and faith leaders to provide spiritual care and counseling, and Friendship Village of Minnesota which provides chaplaincy and spiritual counseling to residents of a large residential and assisted-living home. The Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches is a highly complex organization with a budget of around $8 million. It is comprised of 30 programs which are funded by nearly 250 Minnesota corporations and foundations, 5,500 individuals, 300 congregations, the United Way, American Indian tribes, and federal, state, county, and city governments. With a focus on direct provision of an array of social service programs, the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches is somewhat non-traditional among councils of churches.

God enables us to give expression to the unity of the church through our work, worship, and fellowship. God leads us toward a vision of a just, peaceful, and sustainable world. God empowers congregations to accomplish together what none could do alone. God expects us to work with other faith groups in our efforts to address community needs and effect social change.

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION


The President and CEO is the chief executive officer of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and is responsible to the board of directors for the overall management of GMCC and its programs. The President and CEO works with the board, its committees and the programs to develop strategy, policies, programming and budgets. The President and CEO represents GMCC among affiliated churches and in the broader community. The President and CEO has the responsibility for all programs, financial management, development, communications, and staff leadership for the organization. This position is available due to the planned retirement of current President and CEO, the Rev. Dr. Gary B. Reierson. Rev. Reierson came to the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches in 1989. Under his leadership the organization has grown from 13 to 30 programs and has broadened its outreach to meet changing needs. This organization has strength, resiliency and a strategic plan that will carry it successfully into the future, says Board Chair Susan Sands.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Embody the mission of the organization. Exhibit passion within GMCC and the community toward the achievement of the mission, goals and objectives of GMCC. Be the strategic leader of Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches. Understand the challenges and needs of the communities served by GMCC. Develop and recommend strategic directions, plans and policies to guide the work of the organization to meet those needs. Lead the development function and conduct fundraising and development activities to drive the financial growth, strength and visibility of the organization. There is a special emphasis on work with major donors and funders.

Build on and enhance the organizations strong partnership with the Division of Indian Work (DIW). Oversee the development of budgets and supervise administration of the financial and business operations of GMCC, so as to maintain a balanced budget, provide for proper record-keeping and achieve GMCCs financial and programmatic goals. Supervise the senior leadership team. Provide guidance, coaching and development to assist staff in achieving their organizational objectives. Set a positive tone of leadership throughout the organization and work with all staff in a collegial style. Encourage continuing personal and professional growth among all staff. Foster and encourage positive dialog and relationships among church leaders and members of congregations. Have a real and purposeful commitment to ecumenical and inter-religious cooperation. Encourage and uphold the many faith traditions connected with GMCC and the various expressions of faith as well the ability to work with and invite participation of people of good will with no particular faith tradition. Continue to build and enhance the visibility and brand strength of the GMCC programs while seeking to raise public awareness of GMCC as a successful entity in its own right. Represent GMCC on the boards of directors where the President and CEOs involvement enhances GMCCs presence in the community. Provide primary staff services to the board of directors and the executive committee and ensure staff services to all other committees. Be a proactive and motivating advocate for potential new GMCC Board members, in concert with the nominating committee. Assure compliance with current legal and statutory requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for this key executive position should be experienced, visionary, and inclusive leaders. At least 15-20 years of experience are desired, with leadership background in nonprofit, faith-based and/or community services sectors required. Candidates will have an active curiosity and passion for the charitable purposes of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches. The successful candidate will be a person with a reputation for excellence and integrity. He or she will have proven leadership and large-scale program management experience; exemplary interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches. A minimum of a Bachelors Degree is required with a Masters Degree in a related field strongly preferred. Other essential skills and experience include: Demonstrated success in organizational leadership, with proven competence in guiding the development and implementation of a strategic plan, successful institutional

positioning, and translating ideas into reality. Experience leading an organization through a period of leadership change would be a distinct asset. Experience in the field of social services, community based non-profit organizations is important. Familiarity with the Twin Cities community is preferred. Knowledge of current trends and emerging models in service delivery is strongly preferred. Proven administrative competence and executive oversight is valued. Demonstrated capabilities in financial management, organizational communications, organizational development, planning and goal setting, board relations, and staff supervision. Experience in building, managing, and strengthening community programs is also desired. Prior experience working with a community-based board of directors. Capacity or ability to successfully cultivate and solicit individual donors and foundations, government, and corporate support in support of an organizational mission. Strong, effective experience with fund raising and fund development programs, methods, techniques, and planning is vital. The ability and commitment to envision and describe the long-term future of an organization in a way that inspires and motivates key stakeholders. The ability and commitment to be an engaging ambassador and advocate for GMCC with key constituents such as faith, community, and government leaders. A demonstrated commitment to excellence.

A visionary and entrepreneurial spirit, willing to propose, strategize and execute new ways of delivering service and solving challenging problems in the community. A humble person who is oriented toward the greater good of the organization versus recognition for the self. A good listener with a respectful, consultative, and accessible leadership style, selfassured and comfortable with situations of ambiguity, able to relate easily to a wide range of constituencies including staff, directors, donors, clergy, volunteers, and a wide variety of community groups. An individual who celebrates diversity in all its forms. A person who personally involves and welcomes diverse voices in the workplace. In particular, an interest in and understanding of the rich traditions and faith expressions in the Native American community will be welcomed. A person of strong faith who seeks to live out a committed faith in service to the greater community. Knowledgeable about the wide range of faith communities who affiliate and partner with GMCC; respectful and honoring of all faith traditions. Highly competent, a team player, finds enjoyment in the work place, is an honest, open and balanced individual. The candidate should possess a high degree of emotional intelligence and be skilled at communication and collaboration. Flexible and readily availability to the Board of Directors, the senior management staff, and a variety of stakeholders. Strong in public speaking and public communications. Passionate about working with and for the Greater Minneapolis community and beyond.

COMPENSATION
The compensation package for this position is competitive and attractive. It includes an executive pay structure and participation in the organizations comprehensive benefits plan.
