What is Classroom Management?

(Robiah Sidin, 1993) has mentioned (Lemlech, 1979) has defines classroom management as the orchestration of classroom life: planning curriculum, organizing procedures and resources, arranging the environment to maximize efficiency, monitoring student progress and anticipating potential problems. According to (British Council, 2007) classroom management is the ability to plan, control and facilitate interaction in the classroom that is appropriate to the activity and promotes learning and takes into account different needs and abilities of learners and demonstrates an awareness of Equal Opportunities and Diversity issues. (Hue Ming-Tak and Li Wai-Shing, 2008) in Classroom Management: Creating a Positive Learning Environment, defined in general where the classroom management refers to teachers actions that lead to the formation of a learning environment where positive interpersonal interaction is promoted and effective learning is facilitated. They also mentioned about the definition of classroom manament in several views, such as: (Good and Brophy, 1997) It is a dimention of effective teaching, and a process in creating effective classroom environment. While in (Sanford et al., 1983), cited in (Jones and Jones, 2001) classroom management refers broadly to all activities that teachers carry out in the classroom and it aims to encourage students participation and cooperation. How the teacher in the movie manage the classroom? Based on what I have learned in Pn.Norsiah Sirun classed on 29th Dec 2011 last Thursday, Classroom Management skills includes planning, managing, teaching, interpersonal, communication, leadership, counseling and information technology. Therefore, these skills can be seen in the Ron Clark story, where this movie shows a real Mr.Clark who is an idealistic, creative and supportive teacher that manages to cope with the stressful and tough challenges brought by his new teaching environment. Planning In this movie, Mr.Clark has went to his students house and meet their parent. However, I believe that the reason which brought Mr.Clark set up several rules in his classroom is because he sees that most of the students such as Badriyah, Shameika and Tayshawn did not have a proper

care, attention and importance in their family, thus Mr.Clark has planned and create the first rule in his class that is we are family. Managing Mr.Clark also manages to renovate the classroom and make it more feasible for his students to learn, setting several rules even though his student did not appreciate his efforts. He also manages to ensure that the classroom is clean by providing a container for the chewing gums. He also manage to gain attention from the students who had never paid attention in school when he trying to get their focus and silent class through chugging down the chocolate milk for every 15 seconds if the students were quiet. Teaching Based on Ron Clark movies, he had use contemporary teaching methods and techniques suited for his students, he applies different teaching strategies and employ things on how the best kind that the student could acquire learning. For example, Mr.Clark has "rapping" his lessons to make sure that the students are able to understand as well as easy to memorize the lesson, he also dressing up as different characters to attract the students attention to follow his lesson. On the other hand, his attempts to get the classs attention makes him to develop new teaching techniques, such as his chugging down chocolate milk every 15 seconds if the students were quiet. Mr. Clark also trying to approach Shameika to learn algebra when he make that she has to learn algebra if he learn and know how to double-dutch and it is not only work, but he also has grab his students attention on him. Interpersonal Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, individually and in groups. Interpersonal skills include not only how we communicate with others, but also our confidence, and our ability to listen and understand. Problem solving, decision making and personal stress management are also considered interpersonal skills. Thus, in this movie, Mr. Clark possesses high confidence to which his students are able to pass not only at the grade level but also above the grade level. Hard work and strong, Mr.Clark has filled most of his time to learn on how to educate his student. In order to approach and build good relationship with the students, Mr. Clark has tried to get involved by joining the double-dutch game with his students. He also manages to find the main students who have great influence towards the other students which is Shameika. He has used

shameika mistake to make sure that the other students follow the rules he made. And the best level of interpersonal skill that Mr. Clark employ is how he had inspired his students to change and have interest to learn on his lessons. Communication From this movie also, Mr. Clark has teach the students to treat each others with respect and speak to each other in a kind ways. This can be seen when Mr. Clark has ask Julio to turn and face him when he is talking. He also teach the students to address him as sir, thus this shows that Mr.Clark want to instill a teacher and learner relationship through a better communication. Mr.Clark also has good communication with his students parent when he had persuade Shameika mother on the need of her daughter to have time to study and achieve her highest potentials, because of that, Shameika mother started to realize that her daughter need time to study. Leadership When Mr. Clark steps into the classroom the first time he does so with three rules, the first one is we are a family, the second, we treat each other with respect. His leadership character can also be seen when he tell the children to address him as sir, and they have to line-up to go to lunch and proceed as a group, rather than run down the hall. Mr. Clark also works at trying to develop Shameika as a leader by doing things like giving her control of the class while he steps out from the class. Counseling Through this movie also makes me to learn on how to issue and decide the punishments. This allows and gives me an idea for a greater control over the classroom. By issuing punishments, a teacher has the capability of developing a greater relationship with the student. We can notice this concept of classroom management in Ron Clark Story when Mr. Clark intentionally does not inform the principal of Tayshawns fight and he had made Tayshawn realize there is still someone who cares about him when Mr. Clark said he want Tayshawn to shines with his talent. He re-instills courage and hope into the lives of his students who already given up when they always failed in the examination and did not getting others attention. He also inspired his students to do their best in the state examination, where he had consult Badriyah and said to her that she can achieve what she want to be.

Information Technology With the help of current technology, he has recorded instructional videos for them to watch during his health suffers from pneumonia. Thus, from here we can see that Mr.Clark still continue his teaching even though he is suffering with pneumonia and he had employ the current technology in order to deliver the lessons to his students. Thus, according to this movie, there are variety ways of classroom management that utilized by Mr.Ron Clark in order to approach and to make his students understand his lessons. He just not only teaches but also learned on how to cater his students problems. Therefore, from here I agree that learning is an ongoing process throughout our life, though we have reached the upper level in education.
