Common Law Admission Test

Organising University : National Law University, Jodhpur The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is an all India entrance examination conducted by 14 National Law Schools/Universities for admissions to their under-graduate and post graduate degree programmes (LL.B & LL.M). The 14 participating NLUs in the order of their establishment are: 1. National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU) 2. NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad (NALSAR) 3. National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU) 4. The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS) 5. National Law University, Jodhpur (NLUJ) 6. Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur (HNLU) 7. Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar (GNLU) 8. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow (RMLNLU) 9. Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala (RGNUL) 10. Chanakya National Law University, Patna (CNLU) 11. National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi (NUALS) 12. National Law University, Orissa (NLUO) 13. National University of Study & Research in Law, Ranchi (NUSRL) 14. National Law University & Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJA) The first CLAT Committee (consisting of Vice-Chancellors of the participating institutes) decided that the test should be conducted by rotation in the order of their establishment. Accordingly CLAT-2008 (NLSIU, Bangalore), CLAT-2009 (NALSAR, Hyderabad), CLAT2010 (NLIU, Bhopal) and CLAT 2011 (WBNUJS, Kolkata) were conducted. The CLAT-2012 is being conducted by National Law University, Jodhpur (NLU, Jodhpur).

PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING AND SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATION FORMS:

1. Mode of obtaining Application form o Printed Application Forms along with the CLAT-2012 Information Brochure will be available at the designated branches (refer-www.clat.ac.in)* of the State Bank of India, or in any of Law Schools mentioned above against payment of Rs.3000/only (Rs.2500/- in case of SC/ST/PWD on submission of proof) inclusive of test fee and bank charges.

Request for Application Form may be sent to the Convener, CLAT-2012, National Law University, Jodhpur, NH-65, Nagour Road, Mandore, Jodhpur -342 304 (Raj.) with a demand-draft of Rs.3000/- only (Rs.2500/- in case of SC/ST/PWD) drawn in favour of the National Law University, Jodhpur CLAT A/C and payable at Jodhpur (Rajasthan).

2. Candidates applying on downloaded application forms must enclose Demand Draft/Bankers Cheque/ Pay order of Rs.3000/- (Rs.2500/- for SC/ST/PWD candidates) in favour of "National Law University, Jodhpur CLAT A/C" and payable at Jodhpur (Rajasthan).

Candidates applying online should have a demand draft of Rs.3000/- (Rs.2500/for SC/ST/PWD candidates) in favour of "National Law University, Jodhpur CLAT A/C" and payable at Jodhpur (Rajasthan) ready before starting the procedure.

General Information
1. Information regarding details of intake, reservation, courses offered along with the fee structure and further details is available on the CLAT Information Brochure 2012, CLAT-2012 website or website of the concerned University. 2. Definition of disability for the purpose of admission shall be in accordance with Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995. Disability in the act is defined to include: Blindness, low vision, leprosy cured, hearing impairment, loco-motor disability, mental disability or illness. A candidate will have to produce disability certificate from competent authority in accordance with the provisions of the Act at the time of admission. 3. For details relating to the definition of NRI/NRI sponsored candidates and number of seats available for them, kindly see the information provided by different participating Universities. 4. Some of the Universities (e.g. CNLU, Patna) will admit the NRI candidates directly whereas others will do so through CLAT. Please read the information provided by the participating Universities on the subject in the CLAT Information Brochure or on the CLAT Website. 5. In the event of insufficient number of candidates appearing from a particular centre, the Convener CLAT-2012 reserves the right to cancel the centre and shift the applicants to another nearest centre. 6. Foreign nationals are not permitted to appear in CLAT-2012. Those desirous of taking admission to any course in any of the participating Law Universities may directly contact the concerned University having seats for foreign nationals. 7. Any candidate who requires a scribe to write the test should intimate in writing to the Convener, CLAT-2012 at the time of submitting their application form and in any case,

not less than two months prior to the CLAT-2012 entrance examination, citing reasonable cause and attaching relevant supporting documents. 8. There shall be a centralised admission process for CLAT-2012 on the basis of merit-cumpreference. All admissions shall be centrally done at National Law University, Jodhpur. The information relating to date of admission shall be placed on CLAT website from time to time.

Eligibility
Eligibility for Under-Graduate Programmes To be eligible to appear in CLAT-2012, a candidate should have obtained a Senior Secondary School/Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent qualification from a recognised Board with not less than 50% marks in aggregate (45% in case of SC/ST/OBC and PWD).** Candidates who have appeared in the 10+2 examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the test.o Age of candidate should not be more than 20 years in case of General/OBC candidates (22 years in case of SC/ST and persons with Disability)** as on 1st July, 2012. o The candidate must have passed the qualifying examination at the time of his/her admission and be able to submit its proof. ** Subject to State reservation at the University concerned.

Eligibility for Post-Graduate Programmes To be eligible for appearing in CLAT-2012, a candidate should have obtained a LL.B/B.L. Degree or an equivalent degree from a recognised University with not less than 55% marks in aggregate (50% in case of SC/ST /OBC and persons with Disability)*. Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying degree examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the test**. *Subject to state reservation at the University concerned **The candidate must have passed the qualifying examination at the time of his/her admission and be able to submit its proof.

Pattern of the CLAT Paper for Under-Graduate Programme

The different subject areas of the exam are explained as under: 1. English including Comprehension The English section will test the candidates proficiency in English based comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates will be questioned on their understanding of the passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein etc. The grammar section requires correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.

2. General Knowledge/Current Affairs This section will only test students on their knowledge of current affairs (broadly defined as matters featuring in the mainstream media between March 2011 and March 2012)

3. Mathematics This section will test candidates only on elementary mathematics i.e. maths that is taught up to the class X.

4. Logical Reasoning The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the students ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. It will include a wide variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. However, visual reasoning will not be tested.

5. Legal Aptitude This section will test students only on legal aptitude. Questions will be framed with the help of legal propositions (described in the paper), and a set of facts to which the said proposition has to be applied. Some propositions may not be true in the real sense (e.g. the legal proposition might be that any person who speaks in a movie hall and disturbs others who are watching the movie will be banned from entering any movie theatre across India for one year). Candidates will have to assume the truth of these propositions and answer the questions accordingly. Candidates will not be tested on any prior knowledge of law or legal concepts. If a technical/legal term is used in the question, that term will be explained in the question itself. For example, if the word patent is used, the meaning of patent (a legal monopoly granted by the government for certain kinds of inventions) will also be explained. Tie-breaking In event of tie between two or more candidates in the CLAT, tie will be broken by the following procedure and order:

Admission to LL.B. courses The basic principle of admission to LL.B. Courses through CLAT will remain the same i.e. merit cum preference. The institute-wise preferences shall be obtained from the candidates in the application form itself. The first merit list of the candidates will be made available to the respective participating institute as per merit cum preference basis. This list (institute-wise allotment) will be published along with the declaration of the result itself and the candidates will be asked to deposit their full fees with the respective Law Schools/ Universities allotted to them. The eligibility criteria will be checked by the respective Law Schools/Universities at the time of admission. In case a vacancy exists in any Law School/University after completion of the formalities related to First List, the second merit list will be declared including the list of re-shuffled candidates. If any candidate who has deposited fee earlier is shifted to other Law Schools/Universities of higher preference; his/her total fees will be transferred accordingly and any difference in the fees

shall be taken care of by the concerned Law School/ University where the candidate is finally allotted a seat. All offers of admission by CLAT-2012 shall be provisional and shall not create any right to admission in favour of a candidate. CLAT-2012 will not be responsible for any expenditure incurred by the candidate on travel etc. Under no circumstances shall change of University be allowed after a candidate is admitted to a University.
