Disability Issues and Challenges

Section 1) INTRODUCTION

Disability issues are actually challenges that student or employee will face due to special needs or lack of physical and mental incapability. It becomes an issue and problem when special needs individual is not able to cope up with the society and community contributing at the same or above level. Individual with special needs will face many issues during their life from education until employment towards retirement.

The purpose of disability paper project is to present disability issues along with possibilities of overcoming these challenges that they will face. Therefore, the paper aimed at researching issues and providing ideas and recommendations so special needs individual will be able to overcome it.

It is possible when there is family support including people from the community. The people should look at special needs individual with motivation and support rather than discriminating or avoiding them. The disability becomes issue for special needs individual because there is no support or motivation that will help them to overcome these issues and problems within less time.

Every country is providing facilities and services for special needs individual because they are different and they need more attention and appropriate environment than others do. They are providing these

facilities and services after identifying special needs individual needs and requirements. The early they obtain special attention and development programs the sooner they will get better and overcome disability issues. They should have the issues as challenge rather than problem that have no solution for it.

Section 2) DESCRIPTION

2.1)

Symptoms

The disability issues identified based on symptoms from childhood or early age of learning. The role players in identifying disability issues are by schools or educational intuitions. It is natural that parents might not be aware about disability issues and their symptoms but the identifiers are educational institution.

The symptoms showing disability issues are when the student is working hard and putting much time and effort but they are not successful in understanding or responding behaving as directed or informed. Moreover, they will be taking more time for simple homework and that is instead of finishing within 1-2 hours they will be taking 4-8 hours.

There are symptoms in attitudes of special needs individual. When there is lack of motivation, they give up and quit trying more. They are

self-encouraged and will determine there is no use of trying until there is someone to motivate or support them. The teachers will identify that students are not showing ability that they can follow and there is less understanding on teachers teaching. In this case, instead of showing rude attitude, the teacher should try to analyze whether the student is facing disability issue so they will report to parents immediately. It is the responsibility of teachers to report and to identify because that is the reason children are going to school.

There are some schools and teachers they do not pay much attention while parents do not happen to have time to follow-up on their children. This will cause delay in identifying disability issues, it might be too late to get them into right facilities, and services that will help them achieve special attention and care. The parents should send their children to good and excellent schools and if they are not able to then they should allow enough time to take care of children.

The student will be showing poor reading skills along with unexpected slow process of reading and there will be little or no understanding on the reading done. This is indicating poor memory, which is one of the disability issues. They will be showing that they have issues in remembering or recalling informed instructions.

On the other hand, student might not be showing similar acts that are appropriate as per their age. For example, they are grownups but their Page 3 of 12

behavior is worse than a child of 4 years old is or less is. This disability issue is about not being able to follow directions that are as per age appropriateness. The other symptom is that student is not staying focused and they are showing less concentration in specific activity (Earth Link, 2009).

The discussed symptoms are disability issues those special needs individual will face and these are the challenges that they should be able to overcome. Most of the issues are mental related issues rather than physical because physical issues identified easily than mental issues. The responsibilities of parents are to help their children with special needs to pay more time and attention along with sending them to special facilities and services developed that will take good care of them rather than other schools paying less attention to individual needs.

2.2)

Special Needs Learning

The parents should be aware about special needs lessons and this will enable them learning and understanding children with special needs and requirements. The disability issues can be mental or physical and parents and children should be able to learn to overcome these challenges. The learning lesson will make easier to face disability issues.

The practice covers four areas that will help parents and children. These practices are preparing and fighting to overcome disability issue, Page 4 of 12

overcoming grievances, getting information and developing the best. The application of these practices is below (Wacyk, 2008):

Preparing and fighting to overcome disability issue:

The parents should be playing important role by preparing and fighting so that child will overcome disability issue by learning to cope up. It is by knowing the child and acting as team with the child. There might be the same confusion that is confusing parents so they should be able to clear their confusion. The child should be aware that disability issues possessed by child and parents are available to help prepare and fight it.

Overcoming grievances:

The parents should be able to overcome grievances and by this way, they will be able to support their child with all means. Even if the disability issue is less and not major but they should understand that, they will be spending more time and effort than usual parents will.

Getting information:

It is important that parents should know all the information that child will need to know and there should clear and simple information to discuss with them. It is the process of getting or obtaining information. Page 5 of 12

The resources to get the information are available but parents will have to put into little effort to get it sooner and share with the child.

Developing the best:

There

are

disappointments

but

disability

will

lead

in

developing the best and there might be competency and surprises out of their children. The reason is that individual with special needs taken care becomes smart and good at something they learn very well.

2.3)

Motivation Problem

Some of the disability issues occur when there is less motivation from parents. Difference in disability issue that is affecting mental status or issue is occurring due to lack of mental abilities. With the help of motivation, both the cases solving and managing is possible.

As per some of the disability issues identified, the motivation problems and needs discussed below (Warshaw, M. G., 2002): I) Auditory processing will not be occurring in tests of hearing because the ability is not about hearing but it is about processing of verbal information received. The motivation possibilities of overcoming this disability issue are by providing attention and education on one-to-one

basis. There should be absence of sound of crowd and individual should have specific on single basis attention. II) ADHD/inattentive disability issue is facing problems and issues for not being able to process or understand question properly. They will be having problems in multilevel of questions. The motivation is providing individual with proper attention that is without rudeness or boring teaching. There will be cases for disobedience if there are boring teaching environment. They will need instructions that are in writing rather than verbal and mixed up information. III) Executive functions are disability issue of getting organized or planning for specific thing. They will show that they are losing their assignments and their study areas are not in good shape showing disorganization. They will have bad writing skills and disorganized paragraphs. There will be pressure to get organized and this will affect them. The motivation of these individuals will be by providing them with specific instruction on methods of organizing and planning. Therefore, it is not about just taking care but helping them out with methods and techniques. IV) Dysgraphia is about child is facing issues with writing mechanism that is language disability issue. They might be able to write letters by copying but this does not solve they are lacking automaticity for writing fluently while determining and thinking about content of writing. This can be about developing contents disability. When these individuals motivated and when they understand methods and techniques they become good writers and content developers and they Page 7 of 12

draw better than anyone else does. They will be having writing and drawing aggressive skills and techniques.

The disability issues identified are not the only around the world but there are many various kinds and types. Each disability issue is different and there is difference in level too. This proves that every individual facing disability issue should get proper and direct attention to learn methods of developing and improving these issues before they become problem in their life.

Section 3) CONCLUSION

The disability issues related to mental rather than physical because there are more challenges for individual with special needs due to mental or leaning incapability. The issues are parents or educational institutions not being able to identify disability issue until they are grownups and failure or discouragement touched their demotivation. The inability to identify is because individual with special needs sent to school that is not paying attention to individual needs and parents are too busy to follow-up and take care of them. There are several disability issues and all are challenges for special needs individual due to lack of support in their living environment.

According to learning from paper, there are challenges that special needs individual will face and this is not an issue until and unless there is not support or appropriate facility for them. They should get the opportunity to learn better as per their needs and requirements. The recommendations and suggestions are that individual with special needs should gain opportunity and special attention or care. Moreover, parents should take of their children and provide them with the best facility and schooling. This will enable proper development and handling of disability issues. There are unique and differentiated issues and not every child possesses the same level.

The problems and issues identified might seem somewhat normal but repetition of not being able to create disabilities issues. It is about taking care of individual and helping them out with techniques and methods so that they will be able to overcome and take this challenge. The absence of proper opportunity and learning will result in

complications for parents and child. The earlier the situation handled the sooner it will improve.

It is important that disability issues treated and provided good amount of attention at the earliest before they become discouraged due to the people around them. The disability issues poor development responsibilities are on the parents and they should be able to locate for them good facilities that are definitely helping them. This will ensure that children will get the best and it is helping them to overcome their Page 9 of 12

problems and challenges from an early stage. The sooner they handle issues the better it will get within no time. The absence of support from family and appropriate school will result in left alone and difficulty in facing life creating confusions and worsening their situation of disabilities.
