development in ICT.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Meaning of Open Source Software (OSS) Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.

1.2Meaning of Hardware A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to operate and interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are necessary to convert our input into that language. The binary code coming out of the computer must also be translated into something usable for the operator.

1.3Meaning of Software Software is often divided into two categories: 1. System software: Includes the operating system and all the utilities

that Enables the computer to function.

2. Application software:

Includes programs that do real work for users.

For example, word processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall under the category of applications software.

1.4meaning of operating system An Operating System is a computer program that manages the resources of a computer. It accepts keyboard or mouse inputs from users and displays the results of the actions and allows the user to run applications , or communicate with other computers via networked connections.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1 Meaning of Open Source OS Open Source Operating System is the most important program that runs on a computer that is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. 2.2Examples of Open Source OS Kubuntu Linux A user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment. With a predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu is the GNU/Linux distribution for everyone. Improved desktop, updated applications and increased usability features are just a few of the surprises with this latest release.

Fedora Linux A Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in free and open source software. Fedora is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is built by people across the globe who work together as a community: the Fedora Project. The Fedora Project is open and anyone is welcomed to join.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software Open Source Application Software (also called as end-user programs includes database programs, word processors, and spreadsheets. It is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.

3.2 Examples of Open Source Application Software

Open Office.org 3 An office application set (for word processing, spreadsheet manipulation, picture drawing and data base access) compatible with all other major office application sets such as Office and available for Windows and Mac as well as Linux and other UNIX systems.

Squirrel Mail An email application (for reading and writing email through a web client program) supporting IMAP and SMTP and available for Windows and Mac as well as Linux and other UNIX systems.

4.0The Latest Development in ICT

4.1 Hardware (compare Core i5 and Core i7) On September 8, 2009, Intel released the first Core i5 processor: The Core i5 750,which is a 2.66 GHz quad-core Lynnfield processor with Hyper-threading disabled. Lynnfield Core i5 processors have an 8 MB L3 cache, a DMI bus running at 2.5 GT/s and support for dual-channel DDR3-800/1066/1333 memory. The same processors with different sets of features (Hyper-Threading and other clock frequencies) enabled are sold as Core i7-8xx and Xeon 3400-series processors, which should not be confused with high-end Core i7-9xx and Xeon 3500-series processors based on Bloomfield. The Core i5-5xx mobile processors are named Arrandale and based on the 32 nm Westmere shrink of the Nehalem microarchitecture. Arrandale processors have integrated graphics capability but only two processor cores. They were released in January 2010, together with Core i7-6xx and Core i3-3xx processors based on the same chip. The L3 cache in Core i5-5xx processors is reduced to 3 MB, while the Core i5-6xx will use the full cache and the Core i3-3xx will have no support for Turbo Boost. Clarkdale, the desktop version of Arrandale, is sold as Core i5-6xx, along with related Core i3 and Pentium brands. It has Hyper-Threading enabled and the full 4 MB L3 cache. On January 9, 2011, Intel released new quad-core Core i5 processors based on the "Sandy Bridge" microarchitecture at CES 2011. New dual-core mobile processors and desktop processors arrived in February 2011. The desktop CPUs now all have four unhyperthreaded cores (like the i5-750), with the exception of the i5-2390T. Special ultra-low voltage (2xxxT), low-voltage (2xxxS), and unlocked versions (2xxxK) of "Sandy Bridge" i5 CPUs are also available. DMI bus running at 5 GT/s

intel Core i7 is an Intel brand name for several families of desktop and laptop 64bit x86-64 processors using the Nehalem, Westmere, and Sandy Bridge microarchitectures. The Core i7 brand is targeted at the business and high-end consumer markets for both desktop and laptop computers, and is distinguished from the Core i3 (entry-level consumer), Core i5 (mainstream consumer) and Xeon (server and workstation) brands. In each of the first three microarchitecture generations of the brand, Core i7 has family members using two distinct systemlevel architectures, and therefore two distinct sockets. In each generation, the highest-performing Core i7 processors use the same socket and QPI-based architecture as the low-end Xeon processors of that generation, while lowerperforming Core i7 processors use the same socket and PCIe/DMI/FDI architecture as the Core i5."Core i7" is a successor to the Intel Core 2 brand. The Core i7 identifier was first applied to the initial family of processors. codenamed Bloomfield introduced in 2008. In 2009 the name was applied to Lynnfield and Clarksfield models. Prior to 2010, all models were quad-core processors. In 2010, the name was applied to dual-core Arrandale models, and the Gulftown Core i7980X Extreme processor which has six hyperthreaded cores. In January 2011, Intel released a line of Sandy Bridge based chips under the Core i7 brand.Intel representatives stated that the moniker Core i7 is meant to help consumers decide which processor to purchase as the newer Nehalem-based products are released in the future. The name continues the use of the Intel Core brand. The first Core i7 was officially launched on November 17, 2008.] 4.2 Software (Adobe Photoshop CS3 and CS5)

Adobe Photoshop CS3 is marketed with three main components of improvement over previous versions. Adobe Creative Suite 3 (CS3) was announced on March 27, 2007. It introduced universal binaries for all major programs for the Apple Macintosh. It work more productively, edit with unrivalled power, and composite with breakthrough tools. New features propagating productivity include streamlined interface, improved Camera Raw, better control over print options, enhanced PDF support, and better management with Adobe Bridge. Editing tools new to CS3 are the Clone Source palette and nondestructive Smart Filters, and other features such as the Brightness/Contrast adjustment and Vanishing Point module were enhanced. The Black and White adjustment option

improves users control over manual grayscale conversions with a dialog box similar to that of Channel Mixer. Compositing is assisted with Photoshop's new Quick Selection and Refine Edge tools and improved Image Stitching Technology. CS3 Extended contains all features of CS3 plus tools for editing and importing some 3D graphics file formats, enhancing video, and comprehensive image analysis tools, utilizing MATLAB integration and DICOM file support.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 was announced on , april 11 2011 as the successor to Adobe Creative Suite 3. It was officially released on april 11, 2011.CS5 features additive grain in adobe camera raw, automatic lens correction, straighten image tool Post-crop vignetting ,adjustments panel, localized adjustment in camera raw plugin and camera raw adjustments for TIFF and JPEG.

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning The idea that technology is moving beyond the personal computer to everyday devices with embedded technology and connectivity as computing devices become progressively smaller and more powerful. Also called ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing is the result of computer technology advancing at exponential speeds - a trend toward all man-made and some natural products having hardware and software. Pervasive computing goes beyond the realm of personal computers. It is the idea that almost any device, from clothing to tools to appliances to cars to homes to the human body to your coffee mug, can be

imbedded with chips to connect the device to an infinite network of other devices. The goal of pervasive computing, which combines current network technologies with wireless computing, voice recognition, Internet capability and artificial intelligence, is to create an environment where the connectivity of devices is embedded in such a way that the connectivity is unobtrusive and always available. 5.2 Examples Smartphone A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality. There is no industry standard definition of a smartphone. For some, a smartphone is a phone that runs complete operating system software

providing a standardized interface and platform for application developers. For others, a smartphone is simply a phone with advanced features like e-mail, Internet and e-book reader capabilities, and/or a built-in full keyboard or external USB keyboard and VGA connector. In other words, it is a miniature computer that has phone capability. Example: ,sony Ericsson x10,black berry and many more.

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a handheld computer, also known as a palmtopcomputer. Newer PDAs also have both color screens and audio capabilities, enabling them to be used as mobile phones, web browsers, or portable media players. Many PDAs can access the Internet via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWANs).Many PDAs employ touch screen

technology.example:aving,ceyon and many more

6.0 Conclusion Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so users are free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in

modified or unmodified forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interact with computers. Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will grant your wish.
