Bali Declared 'Island of Peace' by President of Wo r l d P e a c e Committee
Bali has enjoyed many p r a i s e f u l accolades: Island of the Gods, Island Heaven, Island Paradise, the Island of Love, Dawn of the World and Magical Island. Now, added to the list of is Island of Peace recently bestowed on Bali by World Peace Committee (WPC). Suprapta also sees a condition in which the farmers in Bali are economically poorer than their counterparts in other parts of Indonesia. He says that many parties in Bali are forgetting to calculate the negative impact of tourism on Bali's agricultural sector. The arrival of large number of tourists in numbers that exceed the population of Bali will make the price of many basic commodities in life increase sharply. Suprapta warned that farmers, who are already living a hand-to-mouth existence, would be compelled to compete with tourist visitors and those employed in the tourism sector to try to buy daily necessities. The farmers, with little buying power, will be the net losers in such a scenario. www.balidiscovery.com

Leading Bali Academic Says Rapid Rise of T o u r i s m i s Destroying Island's Unique Cultural Persona
A leading professor at Bali's Udayana University, Dr. Ir. Dewa Ngurah Suprapta, blames the rapid rise of tourism in Bali, particularly that which has occurred since the 1990s, as causing a dilution of Bali's traditional culturaltourism image. Many foreign cultures and foreign cultural products have displaced Bali's unique culture, explained Suprapta.. Suprapta describe the tourism business as an industry that places service and treating the tourist visitor like a king at centre stage. Caf businesses, karaoke joints, discos and various other forms of entertainment that formerly did not exist in Bali are now very commonplace, while

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

day again folks and welcome to the Kuta Weekly for 2012, should be a great year overall with the Mighty Pies looking like they'll come out of the box firing on all cylinders and ready to take on all comers. Hopefully those pesky Cats will slip up this year and drop a few notches on the ladder, fingers crossed on that one. 2011 was a fairly big year in the world with the biggest thing I can remember being the Japanese tsunami. I Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com watched it live from one of the big screens at the Town Houses and couldn't believe what huge power the water had as it washed away complete villages and caused havoc at the nuclear power station nearby. I wonder if they will ever get it fixed to an acceptable standard as far as safety goes?? Time will tell I guess, and it's not like these people aren't used to dealing with nuclear fallout after all? Now that I think about it, there were a heap of great things happening last year, Casey Stoner won the championship, Cadel Evans won the Tour de France, The Yanks Lost a helicopter in some sort of weird rescue mission in Pakistan, (I bet Ken won't work that one out) There were so many things happen in 2011 that it just made me realize how many things I have forgotten over the span of a year, so before I forget, I Hope you all enjoy your new year and enjoy all the great things that happen to you in 2012. Karn The Pies This year will also bring a few big changes to the paper by way of a few new bits of content

Now or never for workers as "Elvis" the croc strikes again

Two workers at a reptile park near Sydney were all shook up, running for their lives when a 500 kg crocodile named Elvis suddenly lunged at them, making off with their lawnmower.
p a r k where he lived. He struck again, surging out of the water while the workers performed routine maintenance nearby. "Elvis is Five-meter long Elvis was quite a dangerous already not exactly a hunk of croc, he's a real Australian Reptile burning love, having eaten two firecracker," said Tim Faulkner, Park at Gosford, about an girlfriends at another crocodile operations manager at the hour's drive north of Sydney. "He came flying out and before we knew it he had the mower in his mouth and he's taken it back into the water, dropping a couple of teeth in the process." The cantankerous croc is believed to be between 40 and 60 years old -- more or less in his prime. He was captured near Darwin, in Australia's north, for attacking fishing boats. Faulkner said it was not unknown for Elvis to chase workers around and that the lawnmower had become an important piece of equipment. "We have a golden rule -- keep the mower between you and the croc," he said. While the park workers were safe, the mower was damaged beyond repair, with puncture marks and a torn throttle. Lawrence said Elvis was likely to be hard to handle for a while. "Crocodiles are real primitive creatures, they've got a real basic set of principles, and he's beaten us today," he said. "For him, today, he's king of the jungle."

Supersized saddles find home on the range as Americans fatten

In a sign of America's growing girth, dude ranches and hunting camps in the Northern Rockies are adding heavyweight horses and super-large saddles to seat swelling numbers of outsized clients. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that a third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of children are obese, Western wranglers and outfitters say they are doing all they can to accommodate the widening of waistlines and other anatomical areas. "To put it bluntly, we call them the big-butt saddles," said Lee Hart, owner of Broken Hart Ranch in Montana. The business near Ye l l o w s t o n e N a t i o n a l P a r k seasonally provides trail rides and guided hunting by horseback to nearly 2,000 people from across the country. Hart and others said the 18plus-inch saddles they now stock were all but nonexistent 30 years ago, when just 15 percent of American adults were considered obese. At that time, a 16.5-inch saddle would have been considered
ample enough for a stout rider. Guest ranches and outfitting operations also are bulking up on riding stock crossbred with draft horses -weighing in at roughly 1,500 pounds -- to fit their super-sized customers. "We have to seat 400 fat people every summer," said B.J. Hill, co-owner of Swift Creek Outfitters and Teton Horseback Adventures in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The operation has established a weight limit of 275 pounds for trail rides and pack trips in an effort to prevent injury to both horse and rider. The extra-large animals and saddles come as other U.S. industries, including airlines and healthcare companies, have in recent years adopted policies or retrofitted equipment to address the rising ranks of plus-size people. For example, Boston emergency services in 2011 unveiled an ambulance for the obese. The vehicle is equipped with a stretcher that can hold 850 pounds and a hydraulic lift with a safety of the sick and stem back injuries among crews hoisting hefty patients. In the past five years, saddles offered for sale at Idaho's Cowboy Supply near Boise have expanded along with customers. Owner Molly Menchaca reported a run on saddles measuring from 17 inches to 17.5 inches. "Since people have gotten bigger and fatter, they need more room," she said. A decade ago, Bagley's Teton Mountain Ranch in eastern Idaho purchased an 18.5-inch saddle on the off chance that a larger-than-average customer would seek a pack trip or trail ride. Today, that saddle and a pair of horses that can handle oversized loads are in regular use, said co-owner Alexis Bagley. "We try to have something available for all," she said. What worries Hart of Broken Hart Ranch are clients who have stretched beyond the comfort-waist zone. "I've got a 22-inch saddle, which is basically unheard of, and I've got people who will overflow all sides of it," he said.

saying that revenues from tourists to Bali declined over the last three-month. In a statistical analysis prepared for Bali, Sunarto said tourism revenues declined in accordance with a reduced number of foreign visitors to Bali. The VOA receipts for July 2011, for example, totaled US$5.8 million, reducing to US$5.4 million in August and to US$5.1 million in September. He said that VOA receipts during first three quarters of 2011 were paid by 1,685,112 tourists from nations subject to visa fees. Tourists from ASEAN countries and selected other nations are exempt from purchasing a VOA. Based on the total of 2,052,083 foreign tourists visiting Bali January-September 2011, nearly 18% of Bali's foreign visitors hailed from countries exempt from paying the VOA fees.

Vodkas flavoured with citrus and berries have been around for years and recently some newer brands have been trying to create buzz with unusual flavours.
But this holiday season, for the first time, the world's largest vodka brand is trying to appeal to Americans' sweet tooth with zany flavours like "fluffed marshmallow" and "whipped cream." Faced with relentless competition from established and upstart brands, Smirnoff's owner -- the London-based beverage group Diageo Plc -- took inspiration from things like cookie-scented candles and vanilla-scented laundry soap. It then relied on focus groups, mixologists and food scientists to come up with the new drinks, which went through some 15 iterations, according to the company's chief marketing and innovation officer for North America, Peter McDonough. Tasters preferred a "toasted" marshmallow flavor, but the marketing team decided that "fluffed" marshmallow would be a better name, McDonough said, since it would help avoid perceptions that the drink tasted "chalky or burnt." Diageo paired the drinks with an advertising campaign around the title "Fluffed and Whipped" that features a circus of dancers, dogs, aerialists, women spraying whipped cream into their mouths and model Amber Rose purring that "vodka never felt this good." The mixing of sugar and spice has struck a chord, particularly with younger, female drinkers, say some New York bartenders. "In five years of bartending, I have never seen a bottle sell out that fast," said Dena Kravitz of Rosie O'Grady's Irish Pub in Manhattan's Times Square. "It's the martini of the younger generation." Smirnoff, born in Russia about 150 years ago, says it is trying to make itself relevant and cool to younger adults, drinkers in their 20s and 30s. But some industry opponents see sweet drinks as moves to lure under-

Georgi Candy Cane Vodka. Diageo already sells Godiva Chocolate vodka, Ciroc Coconut vodka and Qream, an ice-cream inspired liqueur. But Smirnoff is the first very large brand to go straight to dessert. Smirnoff, the top-selling vodka in the United States, has faced competition from small, fastgrowing brands that have more cachet, such as Bacardi's Grey Goose and Diageo's Ciroc. Its sales in the United States are still more than double those of the No. 2 vodka, Pernod Ricard's Absolut, but its market share slipped and it reported net sales fell 2 percent in North America in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

age drinkers who can use them to transition from soft drinks to hard liquor. "I see this move into these sweet drinks as catering to a youthful taste," said James Mosher, president of Alcohol Policy Consultations, a private consultancy group. "This is not a drink that a mature adult is going to prefer." Mosher wrote an article slated for publication in the January 2012 issue of The American Journal of Public Health in which he argues that youth-oriented marketing campaigns by Smirnoff and other distilled spirits, which appeal to underage drinkers, were a key factor in the rise of spirits consumption over the past decade in the United States. Furthermore, the sexy images and allusions in the "Fluffed and Whipped" ad put Diageo in the dog house at industry watchdog group Alcohol Justice, which did a "Doghouse Blog" entry on it in November, saying the campaign "may have set the bar at a new low" for what it calls "pornahol" ads, or those that "use sexual innuendo and objectification to sell alcoholic beverages." Diageo, which says the target market for the new varieties is 25-to35-year-old men and women, rejects any suggestion that it is marketing to kids and cited four investigations into alcohol marketing by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission that concluded that industry ads were directed at adults. Diageo called Mosher's article "seriously flawed and unsupported by government data and marketplace realities." As for the sexy ad, McDonough defended it and called it "a little bit tongue-in-cheek." Diageo, the world's biggest spirits maker, has a portfolio that includes Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky, Captain Morgan rum and Jose Cuervo tequila. The notion of confectionary flavors in alcoholic drinks is not new. In recent years, smaller producers have come out with Cupcake Vodka, Burnett's Whipped Cream Flavored Vodka, Pinnacle Cotton Candy Vodka, Three Olives Bubble Gum Vodka and

Thousands of dead herring - it sure smells like the animal apocalypse

New York Times email misfire sets off firestorm

A New York Times employee misfired an email offering discounted subscriptions to customers who had recently cancelled the newspaper, sending it to more than 8 million people instead of the 300 intended recipients.
Questions about the emails hit Twitter, but it took the newspaper several hours to figure out what happened. Initially the newspaper said it had not sent out those emails. "The email is spam and was not sent from The New York Times," company spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades said. She later apologized for the mix-up: "We regret this error and we regret our earlier communication noting that this email was spam." The incident spawned a parody Twitter account, NYTSpam. "Ci@ali$, anyone? I'm tired of trying to sell papers," it said in one of its early Tweets.

For those of the apocalyptic bent, the sudden appearance of 20 tonnes of dead fish in Kvaenes, in the northerly district of Nordreisa, after hundreds of blackbirds dropped dead in Arkansas is a sign that the Mayans and Hollywood are right and 2012 IS the year we all go to hell.

Scientists are looking for a more sciencey reason. They want to conduct tests on the fish to see if they were driven to their death by a predator or simply swept ashore by a storm. Locals, although clearly puzzled by the appearance of the herring, are more worried about the smell: unless someone cleans up the mess quick, Nordreisa will start reek of the underworld.

As an Aries your first instinct is to stand up for yourself. Try it. However, you're urged to have a backup plan handy. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 When you made plans, you carefully estimated what you could do and made an estimate of what others could offer. Unfortunately, you guessed wrong, which has left you with an unfair burden in terms of time or money. Raise this now. While some are legitimately unaware, certain individuals are pretending not to notice. Gemini May 21 - Jun 20
The last thing you want to hear is that this week will be devoted to working out problems with those individuals with whom there are already serious tensions. However, if you take things slowly, and avoid forcing issues, you'll be amazed the ease with which you're able to turn these around.

ashore, we have deployed 12 cleaning staff who continually gather the accumulating debris. We are concentrating our efforts beginning from the border bewtween Legian and Kuta down to the Bali Garden Hotel, explained the chief of the Quick Response Team from the Hygiene and Park Service Department of Badung, Gusti Keut Atawa on December 30, 2011. Observations of the beach conducted in front of the Hard Rock Hotel revealed two green garbage trucks and two front-loaders permanently assigned to collect and remove beach debris. The clean up activities has also caught the attention of foreign tourists walking along the beach. The piles of trash along the beach are removed to an accumulation point near the Chinese Cemetery in Tuban. From there, another fleet of trucks brings the rubbish to the Suwung rubbish dump, explained Astawa, In a single day, the trash, largely comprised of wooden debris mixed with plastic, fills 20 trucks.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

The rare Sagittarian carries a grudge. Still, you would rather like one particular individual to know how much their actions upset your plans. But they've shown absolutely no interest in what you have to say. Bide your time. Soon events will make your point, and better than you'd have imagined possible.

Bali Authorities Working Hard to Keep Kuta Beach Clean of Seasonal Inflex of Rubbish and Debris Brought by Westerly Winds
Beritabali.com reports that the change of year has brought large piles of trash to Kuta's beaches, washed ashore by seasonal wind patterns. Large piles of flotsam, jetsam and general trash washing onto Kuta's beaches have compelled officers from the Hygiene and Parks Department in cooperation with beach workers, lifeguards and beach traders to join forces clean the long stretch of beach in Kuta. During the season of westerly winds rubbish is blown

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22 Ordinarily it would be rare to feel the influence of the Full Moon a week before it takes place. However, because next week's Full Moon is actually in your sign, it would be no surprise to learn you're becoming increasingly sensitive to certain issues. There's no reason you can't tackle some of them now. Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 The recent encounter between your ruler the Sun and Pluto may have brought several tricky matters to a head. But they also gave you a chance to pose certain questions that you couldn't otherwise have asked. What you learned as a result was so informative, you regard dealing with those issues as fair compensation. Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 Aggravating as certain individuals are, especially at the moment, be careful not to allow your irritation with them to turn into serious disputes. The problem is, everybody is taking these issues far too seriously. While they are important, they're not of such significance they justify

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 A fresh start is always appealing to think about. But it's been a week since the pivotal Capricorn New Moon and you're still unsure whether certain plans must go and others are worth pursuing. Soon the period of discussion will end and you'll find you must take action, however Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18
The information or insights that are surfacing now, with the Sun and uncompromisingly honest Pluto in the most sensitive angle of your chart may not be easy to face. This process of acknowledging them is, however, the first step to dealing with them and, ultimately, making them part of the past.

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19

Don't allow your hyper-sensitivity to others' feelings keep you from saying exactly what needs to be said to somebody who's causing you problems. They're taking advantage of your good nature. The only way they'll stop is if you tell them exactly that, you won't tolerate their nonsense for a minute longer.

English city deters teens with pig dung

An English city council is using pig dung to keep teenagers away from a woodland where they had been drinking and taking drugs.
Elderly residents in Middlesbrough, in north-east England, had complained about young people smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol in a woodland near a housing estate. In response, officials thinned out trees and spread a thick layer of pig dung on the ground in an operation that they say has been highly effective in deterring wayward teenagers. "Following complaints, an inspection of the area revealed it was being used to drink alcohol and take drugs, as paraphernalia known as bongs (used to smoke cannabis) were found," said a spokesman for Middlesbrough "Feedback from the residents indicated that, although there was a slight whiff in Willowbank, they would much rather have a pong than a bong.

"They have completely different birthdates and years, I don't know if it's ever happened. I'll have to do some research," she said.

The offering is dedicated to all plants that help human life, such as salak, coconuts, mangoes, durian, bananas, rambutan etc. Not just by presenting an offering, plants are also decorated with clothes and special decoration made from coconut leaf. The Tumpak Wariga celebration is also a time for expressing human gratitude to plants. Plants are seen as human relatives, as they are also part of God's family. It is people's duty to protect plants; moreover Balinese believe that prosperity and comfort will come around whenever the vegetation is protected and conserved. So for that reasons, the Balinese have to make special offerings for plants.

with our plans, roads will be improved over a length of 40.526 kilometres while another 49.8 kilometres are slated for repair. This means that there are still badly damaged road areas that will not be repaired in the coming year," explained Dirgayasa. Dirgayasa blamed the bad state of Bali's roads on the overloading of trucks travelling over the capital's roads. He also cited how many government departments tear up Denpasar's roads and highways for the installation of public sewerage, drains and other installations, but fails to return the roads to their original conditions once their work is completed. www.balidiscovery.com

Mrs. Ravioli comes to visit her son Anthony for dinner. He lives with a female roommate, Maria. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but notice how pretty Anthony's roommate is. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Anthony and his roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, Anthony volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Maria and I are just roommates.'' About a week later, Maria came to Anthony saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the silver sugar bowl. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" "Well, I doubt it, but I'll email her, just to be sure." So he sat down and wrote an email: Dear MaMa, I'm not saying that you "did" take the sugar bowl from my house ; I'm not saying that you "did not" take it. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Your Loving Son Anthony Several days later, Anthony received a response email from his MaMa which read: Dear son, I'm not saying that you "do" sleep with Maria, and I'm not saying that you "do not" sleep with her. He looks at the menu and then scans her beautiful frame top to bottom, then answers, "A quickie." The waitress turns and walks away in disgust. After she regains her composure she returns and asks again, "What would you like, sir?" Again the man thoroughly checks her out and again answers, "A quickie, please." This time her anger takes over, she reaches over and slaps him across the face with a resounding "SMACK!" and storms away. The family said the only explanation is that the ring must have fallen into the sink in 1995 and been mixed with potato peels that were later composted or fed to the sheep, because the soil in the garden is made from composted vegetables and sheep dung. The ring doesn't fit Paahlsson anymore, but she is now planning to have it enlarged. "I had given up hope. Now that I have found the ring again I want to be able to use it," she said.

motivation to actually activate a drug testing policy," Prodan said. "This policy has been something the tour has been discussing for the last three years now and they have been in discussion with WADA for the last two years. "So they're drawing upon the WADA framework in sort of creating this policy. It won't actually be WADA compliant but it will be sort of based on that framework. "The two biggest hindrances to activating a drug testing policy for the ASP has basically been resource and budget allocations. "We're a non-profit organisation and we're sort of a young sport, so it has been a priority it just hasn't been a reality for us until ... last November when the board did approve for a budget to begin a form of drug testing for the athletes on tour."

Surfing pro tour to introduce drug tests

The governing body of professional surfers is intending to introduce a drug screening program by the start of the 2012 pro t o u r i n Australia next month.
The Association of S u r f i n g Professionals (ASP) insists all its members are behind this move. "Surfing's a unique sort of subculture, but in regards to the surfers on tour, they're 100 per cent behind the policy," ASP spokesman Dave Prodan said. "The idea is to sort of randomly test athletes at each event, they've all volunteered to be tested at the opening event if we can activate the policy in time. "That's how much they believe that they want to get this out in the open and they want to be tested and taken professionally. And I'm just sure it would sort of add a bit more credence to the sport. "The board of directors is working through the details of the policy right now and we're hoping to have something finalised here in the next couple of weeks.

"Our first priority will obviously be to communicate to the surfers and the stakeholders in detail what the policy entails and then communicate it to the public." "We were already intending to do the 300 car parks underneath the eastern stand because that's part of the contract documents. The fact that the F e d e r a l Government is paying for that gives us roughly 15 million to redirect into other aspects of the project. "We hadn't made a commitment to do the car park underneath the indoor cricket centre. We knew that we had to make a decision by the end of January on whether we had the funds to commit to that or not. "This announcement today means we'll immediately commit to that." The decision ends uncertainty about the Federal Government's contribution to the redevelopment, which was one of several infrastructure projects put on hold after the Queensland floods. The State Government will spend $535 million on the redevelopment. Work has begun on the project and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2014 AFL season.

From whale sperm to colon cleansers to the shape of a woman's foot when she has an orgasm, celebrities did not disappoint during 2011 with their penchant for peddling suspect science in the world's media.
In its annual list of what it considers the year's worst abuses against science, the Sense About Science (SAS) campaign named U.S. reality TV star Nicole Polizzi, Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann and American singersongwriter Suzi Quatro as top offenders, with their dubious views on why the sea is salty, the risks of cervical cancer vaccines and the colon. "I used to get a lot of sore throats and then one of my sisters told me that all illnesses start in the colon. I started taking a daily colon cleanser powder mixed with fresh juice every morning and it made an enormous difference," But SAS was keen to dispel such myths. It asked qualified scientists from various disciplines to comment on some of the worst celebrity science offences. "The colon is very important in some diseases, but it certainly is not the cause of all illnesses," said Melita Gordon, a consultant gastroenterologist said in the review. "Sore throats do not come from your colon, they are caused by viruses that come in through your nose and mouth. Taking 'colon cleansers' has no beneficial effect on your throat - or on your colon." While the review is partly about entertainment, the campaign group stresses it also has a serious aim - to make sure pseudo-science is not allowed to become accepted

Christian Louboutin, a French footwear designer, was taken with something a fellow party guest told him about shoes. "She said that what is sexual in a high heel is the arch of the foot, because it is exactly the position of a woman's foot when she orgasms. So putting your foot in a heel, you are putting yourself in a possibly orgasmic situation," he explained. K e v a n Wy l i e , a consultant in sexual medicine, responded drily that it's important to differentiate cause from effect. "A woman's foot may be in this position during orgasm, but that does not mean that putting her foot into this position under other circumstances will result in orgasm," he said.

The State Opposition's treasury spokesman, Iain Evans, says the purpose of the funding is to cover the cost of a budget blow-out. "Before the election, the State Government were telling everyone in South Australia that they could build the oval for $450 million and not a cent more," he said. "The total cost now is well over $600 million, and the $30 million today primarily goes to paying for car parking that was already part of the project anyway." The chief executive of the Infrastructure Department, Rod Hook, says the main purpose of the money is to provide extra parking space in the parklands. doctors said they feared the damage done may take many years to reverse. "It's tempting to dismiss celebrity comments on science and health, but their views travel far and wide and, once uttered, a celebrity cancer prevention idea or environmental claim is hard to reverse," said SAS's managing director Tracey Brown. "At a time when celebrities dominate the public realm, the pressure for sound science and evidence must keep pace." The review also highlighted a bizarre quote from U.S. TV personality Polizzi, who declared recently: "I don't really like the beach. I hate sharks, and the water's all whale sperm. At least, so say students at Michigan's Lake Superior State University who released an annual list of words they deem so misused, overused and clichd they should be banished in the year ahead. "Occupy," the term associated with the months-long protest movement in New York and across the United States against income inequality and a variety of other social ills, was among the 12 nominees after just a few months of overexposure. "It has been overused and abused, even to promote Black Friday shopping," said Grant Barnett of Palmdale, California, who was among those to nominate the word. "We are headed to Grandma's house Occupy Thanksgiving is under way," said Bill Drewes of Rochester Hills, Michigan, giving another example of how the word has been overused. At the head of the class, though, was the word "amazing," which garnered nominations from around the United States and from as far away as Israel and the United Kingdom for inclusion on the list by the school in remote Sault Ste. Marie. Many nominators mentioned overuse on television, specifically by personalities such as Martha Stewart and Anderson Cooper, and on reality TV. "Every talk show uses this word at least two times every five minutes. Hair is not 'amazing.' Shoes are not 'amazing,'" said Martha Waszak of Lansing, Michigan. Although one critic suggested that the act of giving birth was amazing enough to be termed, well, amazing, the term "baby bump," often attached to
pregnant celebrities such as Beyonce or Gwyneth Paltrow, drew scorn. "This is a phrase we need to finally give birth to, then send on its way," offered Mary Sturgeon of Vancouver, British Columbia. The school began its list of words proposed for banishment in 1976, when it named "at this point in time" a linguistic dud, as substituted for the concise and elegant "now." The college now receives well over 1,000 nominations each year through its website. Previous winners and nominees include the terms "shovel ready" for 2010, "battleground states" for 2005, "24/7" for 2000 and "family values" for 1995. Also on this year's list were "shared sacrifice," "blowback," which is sometimes exchanged with "pushback" to mean resistance, and "mancave," now a favourite with advertising copywriters. "Not every man wants a recliner the size of a 1941 Packard that has a cooler in each arm and a holster for the remote," said David Hollis of Hubbardsville, New York. Heading into the 2012 election year, votes were cast to ban the term "win the future," a phrase that has been claimed by both the left (President Barack Obama) and the right (Republican White House hopeful Newt Gingrich). Other vote-getters included "the new normal," "ginormous," a mash-up of gigantic and enormous, and "thank you in advance.

It was a case of new club, same routine for Darius Boyd's first day of preseason as a Newcastle player.

Serena offers no apologies

Serena Williams says she does not regret her outburst during last year's US Open final and warns she would do it again if her emotions are as high as they were during her loss to Australia's Samantha Stosur.
Williams reacted angrily when chair umpire Eva Asderaki ruled that her shout of "come on" after hitting a forehand was a hindrance and awarded a point to Stosur. Following the ruling Williams directed a torrent of abuse at Asderaki including calling her a "hater" and "unattractive inside" - and was subsequently fined for the outburst. But speaking before her first round match at the Brisbane International, Williams says she could not see anything wrong with her actions. "I honestly think I was really toned down, like I didn't use any bad language or anything, so I wouldn't change it so much," she said. "When you're [full of] emotion that's kind of how you feel. "And I'm an emotional player and I'm an extremely emotional person, oh my goodness, it was what it was. "I'm always going to be me - if that means I'm giving 200 per cent then that's how I am. "I love that and I think people can respect that when they see me play.

He is planning to make a special appearance at the market this month to hand out the returned gifts to children. Thieves return stolen gifts to Father Christmas

A BAG of presents stolen from a Father Christmas in Rome has been returned with an apologetic note from the thieves after the victim made an impassioned appeal.
The gifts were taken from a local businessman while he appeared as Santa at a Christmas market on picturesque Piazza Navona in the city centre, Il Messaggero daily reported. "We're sorry. We made a mistake. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!'' read the scrawled note left by the

Hewitt's team mate Jarmila Gajdosova defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the women's singles but third-seeded Spain won the mixed doubles 6-3, 3-6 (11-9). Hopman Cup rules state that the third set in the mixed doubles is decided by a tiebreak in which the first pair to reach 10 points with an advantage of two takes victory. Hewitt has not won a major title since Wimbledon in 2002 and has plummeted to number 186 in the world rankings. Despite being a constant subject of retirement speculation, Hewitt refuses to accept that the injury to his left big toe makes it impossible to scale the heights again. Rooney fined over night out

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been fined a week's wages by the Premier League club for a night out over the Christmas weekend, according to press reports.
Roon e y w a s dropped by United ahead of its shock 32 home loss to Blackburn last S a t u r d a y, officially because of f i t n e s s concerns. B u t s e v e r a l reports that the star was punished for a below par training session on December 27 after a Boxing Day evening out with wife Coleen and team-mates Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson against team orders. Rooney was fined approximately 200,000 pounds ($303,000 dollars) with defender Evans and midfielder Gibson also fined, the reports said.

Rooney's threat to leave the club in October 2010 before he was handed a vastly improved salary, several papers said the player's future at Old Trafford was not in jeopardy. Sources with knowledge of the situation, are saying Ferguson's punishment of Rooney would not have a longterm impact on the duo's working relationship.

Would you smell a pair of jeans worn-in and unwashed for three months?
EVER wondered what happens if you wear the same pair of jeans five days a week for three months straight without washing them?
Melbourne researcher Tullia Jack recruited 30 volunteers to do just that - and will soon exhibit the grimy garments at the National Gallery of Victoria so the public can put them to the pong test. She hopes the unusual experiment for her Master of Philosophy thesis will challenge our culture of "extreme clean". Despite stains and spills ranging from tuna and avocado to motor oil and chocolate, Ms Jack says the expectation dirty denim will be whiffy is much worse than the reality. "Not washing your jeans isn't nearly as bad as it sounds," the Melbourne University student and RMIT fashion lecturer says. "You really don't need to wash clothes as often as you think. Stains come and go, they just wear off." Burying her nose in the pile of well-worn jeans on her desk, she picks out perfumes ranging from eggshells to caramel. "The jeans don't smell socially challenging. They just smell like people," she says. Only one of the 30 experiment participants struggled to complete the task, which involved wearing a pair of duds donated by local denim label Nobody at least five days a week in March, April and May last year. was Dirty exhibition, where the public will be invited to sniff the used jeans at the NGV Studio in March, will motivate many more Victorians to launder less. Participants were recruited on social media. They ranged in age from 18 to 56, with an even split of men and women. They included a librarian, a high school teacher, a festival producer and a graphic designer. The "great unwashed" kept Facebook diaries and were regularly interviewed to see how they felt - and smelt. About half hit a rough patch between the three and sixweek mark, and reported they didn't want to wear the jeans any more, Ms Jack said. But by the time the experiment ended, half wanted to continue wearing - and not washing - their dirty jeans. Ms Jack's research found men were more likely to wash inner layers more frequently, and were more conscious of their scent. "I thought the boys would be smellier, but they weren't," she said. One participant, Matthew, has said the jeans experiment had made his life much easier. "I didn't have to work out what to wear every day," he said.

All Blacks coach Henry knighted

All Blacks coach Graham Henry, who guided New Zealand to Rugby World Cup victory in October, has been rewarded with a knighthood in the nation's New Year's honours list.

H e n r y, n o w S i r Graham, has been made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for his service to the national sport. The honour comes after he redeemed himself in the eyes of a rugby-obsessed New Zealand public by taking the All Blacks to the World Cup win, albeit by a narrow 8-7 margin over France in the final. Four years earlier, Henry had been publicly castigated in New Zealand when, again under his stewardship, the All Blacks crashed out of the 2007 World Cup in the quarter finals. "I feel very honoured, very humbled in getting this award," Henry said after the knighthood was announced. "Obviously winning the Rugby World Cup put the icing on the cake. "I don't think I'd be standing here today if we hadn't done that." The 65-year-old Henry, who is affectionately known as "Ted", stepped down as All Blacks coach after the World Cup ending a remarkable era which saw him rated as one of the most successful coaches in any sport. In eight years at the helm, the All Blacks played 103 Tests and returned a winning average of 85.4 percent. Henry has since turned down offers to join overseas clubs but said he is keen to develop an advisory coaching role, and not just for rugby. "If I can pass some knowledge on to other coaches, not only in rugby but other sports, I'd enjoy that." Richie McCaw, who captained the All Blacks to their World Cup victory, turned down the offer of an immediate knighthood saying it did not seem appropriate while he was still playing.

Many chose to expand the experiment and stopped washing other garments in their wardrobe such as T-shirts, shirts and jumpers, Ms Jack says. The sustainable fashion advocate said participants had collectively saved thousands of litres of water, and had also saved on electricity and soap powders. She hopes her Nobody er
