First Grade News

January 9-13, 2012

What were learning
Our Bible stories for this week are The Day of Atonement and The 12 Spies. We will be reading Trucks and Communities in our basal reading books. In Phonics we are focusing on double consonants, and when c makes the /s/ sound and g makes the /j/ sound. Math will include ordinal positions, counting money, and subtracting 2. In Social Studies we are starting country projects for the Social Studies fair later in January. Science includes studies on how animals and plants help each other.

Assignments
Here are some ways to challenge your child: Math Have your child create his/her own math word problems to have others complete. Reading Read other non-fiction books about careers or transportation. Science Plan ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle at home. Language Create a list of verbs you find in the stories you read. This week you will notice that the memory treasure for Friday is a hymn stanza. We have completed the 10 Commandments and will be reciting Hymn stanzas on Fridays for the rest of the year. I encourage you to work with your child on memorizing the stanza before Thursday night due to the length. This first hymn may be a little difficult considering the content and length. Do your best!
