KODAK IRTRAN Infrared

Optical Materials

KODAKIRTRANInfrared Optical Materials are designed for the

fabrication of lenses, windows, domes, prisms, and filter substrates for use from about 2 /-Lmto 14 /-Lm.They are all hotpressed polycrystalline
solids which can be ground and
polished to perform a multitude of infrared tasks.
IRTRAN1 Material, the original, is especially useful for missile
windows and domes and other optical components operating
between 2 and 8 tui:
IRTRAN2 Material-workhorse
of the family-is
useful as
spectroscopy cells, lenses, IR optics, windows, and domes, all
over the 2 to 14 usi: range. Thin sections have good visible
transmittance.

Incidentally, evaporation-grade IRTRANMaterials are readily

available and ideal for coating purposes and at bargain prices.
We urge your consideration of the data presented below the
next time you select an optical material for any infrared application. These materials do an outstanding job and hold up their
part of Kodak's reputation as maker of many types of fine infrared products-photographic
films and plates, filters, lenses,
laser materials, and IRTRA Materials.
Our people speak infrared fluently. Make them prove it.

and Dielectric Coatings

All high-index optical materials show higher transmittance

when an appropriate antireflection coating is applied. Hard
multilayer antireflection coatings can be deposited on one or
both surfaces of IRTRAN
Materials for maximum transmittance at
selected wavelengths.
Coatings similar to the example shown are available for both
IRTRANMaterials and each coating can be peaked for a specific
. wavelength region (within the normal transmittance range for
that material).
Dielectric coatings can be applied to one or both sides for
selected reflectivity, generally ranging from 30 to 99 percent
with a tolerance of 5%.

AlllRTRANMaterials are generally usable at temperatures up to

at least 300c' Higher use temperatures are possible depending
on conditions of use-type
of IRTRANMaterial, type of atmosphere, duration, pressure, tolerable emissivity, etc.

KODAKIRTRANMaterials are ideal for windows in spectroscopy

and many other applications.
When pressure is a factor to consider, this formula can be used for calculating
the minimum
window thickness
for pressure differentials
on the order of
several atmospheres:

y1.1

pr
Sa

t = minimumwindowthicknessininches
p = unit pressure in lbs/in?
r = radius of unsupported area
Sa = allowable stress in lbs/in"
(Suggestion: Use modulus of rupture
divided by an appropriate safety factor, say 4.)

In suggesting
the above design parameters,
factors such as
mounting rigidity or resiliency,
mounting
surface roughness,
clamping loads, momentary
pressure surges, combinations
of
pressure and thermal shock, impact, vibration, and so forth have
not been taken into account. For this reason our thickness suggestions cannot be taken as a fail-safe guarantee under actual
operating conditions.

Index of refraction values were experimentally

determined
at
selected wavelengths
between 1 and 10 tat: Coefficients of an
interpolation
formula were established
and reduced by least
squares methods, and the values computed. All values beyond
10 f.Lm are extrapolated.

lenses and element-components

can be supplied
to meet customer
needs. Specify focal length, outside
diameter,
aperture,
intended
wavelength of use, and type of IRTRANMaterial. Kodak will readily compute
spherical
radii for single-element
lenses based on simple thin-lens formulas. Kodak is not in the position to
compute
multi-element
lenses nor
warrant performance
values (such as
blur circle) for any custom lens. Prices
and delivery on custom lenses can
usually be quoted upon written or
telephone request.
