Astro News For the New Year

Marie Shaw Rev Carol Ingle

In 2012, the way we look at our lives, our culture and society is changing. It's as if we will experience a "wake up" call. We are seeing and BELIEVING that we create the world we live in. It is our perceptions and thoughts that create what we manifest. This shift in consciousness started a while back but in 2012, we see how this shift in perception will affect the entire world. The process will take another four years. But please be prepared and understand that everything you think, feel, do and act on, has an effect on this planet. We are ONE. January 2012 begins this massive adjustment to a new way of thinking and perceiving. Mars in Virgo will move backwards until mid April. Mars is the god of war and in the sign of Virgo, we "analyze" just as Virgo does. We will analyze our past. We understand that old methods no longer serve our purpose. We will analyze our future and make decisions based on our new spiritual ideals. In January, the decisions we make about our lives, chart a course for us that lays a foundation for the entire year. Many of us will be making decisions regarding our financial future. Some will finally open a business. Other people may move to create a better quality of life in a new area. The Full Moon on January 9th is in Cancer (home and family) while the Sun is in Capricorn (work) and Saturn is in Libra (sign of balance). I just received a one-question email reading request from an Aries who asked if she would be able to balance her professional and personal life this year. This is something we all will be coping with. When Mars goes retrograde on January 23, we will rethink our life's goals and our future plans. However, it is not a good time to start new projects until after April 13th. For these twelve weeks January 23rd April 13th, you should be only be PLANNING long term goals you want to accomplish the next two years. Long-term goals with specific steps in mind are best. If you plan to open a business in the future, do strategic planning between now and April. Ask yourself what you really want to do and where you really want to be. Mars retrograde in Virgo will offer you insight to do this. Use this time wisely to plan.

If you have no clue as to what you want to do, then mars retrograde give you 12 weeks to gain some insight. Things may just cross your path and new ideas may emerge. There is always a challenge with Mars Retrograde and for many people it may bring frustration and anger issues to the surface. Whatever hurt or anger has been set aside, now it comes up. This happens so you can look for resolutions and healing. But if not handled, the anger could grow and explosive emotional volcanoes' could erupt. I keep psychically seeing someone out there reading this newsletter and having troubles with an ex-husband. It could involve court matters, custody issues or the like. If this is you and you are reading this, try to resolve this and not get sucked into the drama. You will be pulled into it easily by the ex husband. Do not allow this to happen. Keep your cool and do not allow emotions to get the best of you. On February 3rd, Neptune, the planet which represents spirituality moves back into the sign it rules, Pisces, and plans to stay until March 30, 2025 Neptune will pack a more powerful punch now that it is back in the sign it rules. It hasn't been in Pisces since 1848 so lets welcome it home! In astrology, this is a big deal! Neptune has no boundaries. It's an energy that highlights, music, art, acting, spirituality, the paranormal, transcendence, etc. Neptune wants forgiveness and compassion. Neptune's move into Pisces, will be our biggest help in making a new future as it is associated with our beliefs and perceptions and how they affect the entire world. We, as society have forgotten that we are divine beings and Neptune will call on us to remember that we are just that. It will help us transcend and think on a deeper spiritual level than we have been. Notice the television shows, the books coming out in print, the magazine articles you are reading and even Oprah, have been moving in this direction. I remember years ago, my publicist would try to book me on the Oprah show but producers weren't buying the spiritual stuff back then. They thought it was all woo-woo. Now, in the past few years, we are seeing this great media influence called Oprah, slowly shift into offering spiritual articles, interviews and information. The media is very powerful in introducing and shaping people's opinions. Neptune rules art, music, movies, etc. so we will be hearing and seeing more spirituality in these genres. As we spiritually grow on an individual basis, so does our energy and that energy links with others and so on and so on. Thus in a subtle way, our opinions change, our direction and meaning in life, our schools, our movement, our society. Neptune is what you cannot see.

You can thank Neptune for this. It's like a fog, slowly moving overhead with no boundaries, seeping into every nook and cranny of the world. Again, in the sign of Pisces, it is more powerful than ever and will make 2012 a year of incredible change because our perceptions and ideals will transcend. They are more open to Spirit. We are anxious, willing to learn, accept and embrace spiritual truths. What an exciting time to be alive! Notice your dreams are more lucid and revealing too during Neptune's return to Pisces. This is just another way your subconscious can reveal to you important messages that may guide you into making amazing changes. When you book your new years phone or in person readings with me or even if you choose to do a one question email reading through my website, be sure to ask me to read where specifically Neptune and Pisces fall in your specific chart. This area, unique to each individual, gives you insight as to how Neptune is getting ready to transcend your life! Blessings to you all, Maria

Herbs & the Wheel of the Year

Posted by Rev

Carol Ingle

Here I have broken the Wheel of the Year down into its respective holidays and observances and have included bits of folklore about the herbs where it was possible so that you will know why you are incorporating these herbs into your rituals. SPRING/EOSTRE This is the time of the year when the Sun moves into 0 degrees Ares. Traditionally it is a season of birth and rebirth of resurrection following the long winter. The time when the Pagan Sun God begins to makes to make it known that He is well on His way from going from the Sun Babe to the Sun Prince. ACORNS --- may be planted as part of the festival/celebratio n. It should have been gathered the previous year and is symbolic of life renewing itself. While planting concentrate on those attributes which you already possess and would like to see become stronger in yourself. BULBS -- Any type, daffodils, crocus, tulips, what-have-you are very appropriate for altar decorations and for planting at this time. CELANDINE -- should be included into the ritual cup. It may also be tossed into the ritual fire during the celebration. CINQUEFOIL -- add some of this to your incense. It should have been gathered either under the light of the full moon or at mid-night as the day changes between Wednesday to Thursday under a waxing moon. It brings a sense of communication and awareness to the ritual and when burned as incense will bring friends closer and is said to bring dreams of one's perfect partner. DOGWOOD -- the flowers will bring beauty to your altar and the dried bark may be ground and added to the incense. It is one of those beautiful and voluptuous symbols of spring. HONEYSUCKLE -- grace the perimeter of the Sacred Circle. It is an herb of Immortality and represents the ever constant cycle of life renewing itself.

IRIS -- the ground root is added to the incense mixture. It has long been held as a Religious Herb and is named for the deity who leads the souls to the Elysian Fields. In Egyptian lore the Iris is noted as having been carved upon the head of a magickal want to represent the scepter of the pharaoh. It was though the three petals represented the virtues of faith, wisdom and valor. JASMINE -- may be added to the ritual cup and/or used as incense. It is most often associated with the Goddesses and is considered sacred to Diana of Ephesus, in later years it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is sacred to Quan Yin. It is related to the female/maternal aspects of the universe. ROSE -- Yellow are most appropriate but any color will do, they should adorn the altar. The rose is the most sacred symbol of Aphrodite and represent beauty in its purest aspect. SEEDS -- any and all seeds you have collected from the previous year should be placed upon the altar so that they may blessed by the Priest and Priestess for spring planting. TANSY -- should be baked into the ritual cakes. It is also considered an herb of Immortality and is associated with many Christian festival of Easter. When added to your batter it represents the eternalness of life. VIOLETS -- make beautiful altar decorations. They carry the virtues of modesty, simplicity, serenity and peace. They are a particular source of inspiration and good fortune for women. Violets originate from the nymph Io, daughter of the river god Inachus. She and Zeus developed a romance and when another of Zeus' lovers heard of this she became so jealous that she cast as spell and changed Io into a heifer! In Zeus' great love and compassion for her he changed her into the Violet. BELTANE/MAY DAY The Sun has now moved into Taurus, the seeds are now planted in the fields. The trees are again turning lush and green, Earth is beginning to bloom all over. It is the night when the pagan Sun-Prince turns into the Sun-God and makes love with the Goddess for the first time that year. His coming of age and their Union will produce the fruitfulness of the fields and the bounty of the harvest to come. ALMONDS -- if you have an almond tree (you're very lucky!) Use the flowers to decorate the altar. You may also use some of the ground bark in your incense. Almond has a long history as a Religious herb and if offered as incense in sacrificial rites sacred to Artemis, Hecate and Zeus. It is the source from which Aaron, the high priest of the Hebrews selected his magickal wand. In Greek myth, Phyllis was abandoned by her lover Domophoon and the Gods, unable to bear her grieving over this, transformed her into the Almond. When he came back to her he found only the Almond.

It is said that when he feels sufficiently guilty for having left her and he embraces the tree that it then bursts into leaf and bloom. Almond is used to today to capture the essence of love which survives through all strife.

CINQUEFOIL -- add some to the ritual cup and/or incense. FRANKINCENSE -- should be the main ingredient in the incense, all other ingredients are secondary to it. It is primarily considered to be a Religious herb, the Hebrew religion regards it most highly using it often in their rites. It is also part of the Roman Catholic tradition, used in ten parts to four parts benzoin and one part storax. It is used primarily to invoke the Male Aspects of the Universe. The Babylonians used it to invoke their Bel, their Sun God. It is also used to invoke Apollo, Adonis and the Golden Haired Sun God (or Princely Aspect) of the Pagan Sun-God. It is also used to invoke the Feminine Aspects of the Universe, Demeter and various Moon Goddesses such as Diana and Artemis. The fragrance aids in focusing concentration and being aware of all that is happening within the ritual. It also holds as an herb of Protection in that its cleansing and purifying properties are excellent for the soul and spirits, keeping you safe when exploring the astral realms.

IVY -- wreaths should be worn around the heads of all and adorn the altar. It holds the virtue of fidelity and as such was made into wreaths worn by victors and newly married couples by the Greeks. It is a Religious herb sacred to Dionysus and Bacchus. As such, in magickal workings it is said to prevent drunkenness.

MARIGOLD PETALS -- use these to purify and cleanse the Circle. It is an herb of Consecration and as such is used in rituals to the Goddess. MAYBASKETS -- this is not an herb but rather a wonderful tradition. On this night place small baskets of flowers and home made treats upon the doorsteps of your friends. MEADOWSWEET -- if you're desiring to do some magickal working of the romantic kind on this night, offer some of these to the Goddess. ROSES -- any color are appropriate for decorating the altar or the body. WOODRUFF -- take this in the cup or (if possible) check out the local liquor store at this time of year and ask if they sell "May Wine".

MIDSUMMER

Well, we all know it isn't mid-summer at all...not by the present day calender anyway...it is June 21, the beginning of summer but since people of old did not actually count summer as a season, rather a natural progression of spring, it is no longer the middle of the growing season. This is also the longest day of the year. It is also the time of year when we begin to see the first fruits of Beltane form and ripen, the Union of the God and Goddess has been successful and is already beginning to produce that which can be harvested and eaten. CHAMOMILE -- is used to invoke the God and will make us aware of the Father of Nature. You may do this by either including in the ritual cup or the incense. CINQUEFOIL-- add to the ritual cup and incense. ELDER -- stand among the Elder to see the little people and the Faeries. Use the blossom in your ritual but ONLY if your goals are clear and your ethics are pure! It is very powerful and if your intentions are not pure...well...watch out. FENNEL -- tie together bunches and hang them around your home, the Circle and/or the altar as it is considered an herb of Protection for the home and family. HEMP -- if you've got some..share with me! This is the night to try out the time honored and very quaint spell of sowing hemp seeds around the church at mid-night. The intended purpose of this has something to do with love...I say something because sources will say doing this will cause you to either...1) dream of your true love and who he/she will be or already is...2) the first person you meet the next day is your true love...3) your true love will come and stand beneath your window while you sleep. Take your pick and let me know the results. In the Pagan/Wiccan religions hemp is an herb of Vision. This does not mean smoke pot all the time, rather that it is reserved for those times of divination alone and for this purpose the fresh juice of the plant should be used rather than smoking a joint. LAVENDER -- tradition ally this is tossed into the bonfire to ensure a safe year and good harvest. It is also used as the primary ingredient in the incense and may be taken in the ritual cup. It is capable of invoking Hecate and Saturn. It attract energy of an extremely high vibrational nature and is used in meditation before or during the ritual to increase awareness and bring inner calm and freedom from emotional stress.

MALE FERN -- this is the night when this plant should be gathered. It is one of the most potent magickal Aphrodisiacs. Especially useful in males. MISTLETOE -- if you will be wanting this plant for later magickal workings this is the night to gather it. MUGWORT -- is used in the ritual bath and the ritual cup (in a small amount). It is an herb of Protection, tossing some into a fireplace of cauldron is said to keep the home safe from lightning, some burnt in the room brings protection to the children. ROSES -- adorn the Circle and altar with RED rose petals. Also use some in the incense for the Blessing of the Circle. SAINT JOHN'S WORT -- should be gathered upon this night. Stomp on a patch or toss some into the ritual fire to see and commune with the Faery Folk. VERBENA -- gather the new plants for the coming year and toss what you have left from the previous year into the fire. It is considered an herb of Protection and Immortality. LAMMAS Now we begin the cycle of the harvest. The fields have been planted, the fruits have come forth, this is the first of the harvest festivals. It is also the time when the Sun-God slowly begins his downward spiral into Death. The nights are growing longer and although we still toil in the gardens the night are cool and the work is not mindful. Now we harvest and work to gather the crops of material and spiritual natures until the frosts of autumn set in. FENUGREEK -- is used at this time to invoke the waning Sun God. It is sacred to Apollo and will bring His wisdom to one's heart. FRANKINCENSE -- is used to cense the gardens or fields at this time to celebrate the beginning of the harvest. HEATHER -- is used to decorate the Circle or altar, if this is not available you may use other grains such as wheat, rye, and the like. HOLLYHOCK -- one long stalk should be carried into the Sacred Circle by the children of the group at the beginning of the ritual procession to the fields. In this respect it will bring the ability to flourish again to the fields when laid upon them.

MISTLETOE -- two berries...and no more than that!.. should be added to the ritual cup. This will bring fertility to all who drink from the cup, fertility of the body as well as the mind and the spirit. It will bring creativity through the coming winter. OAK -- adorn the altar and circle with oak leaves. Grind the bark for use in the incense. Oak is sacred to the Romans and the Druids. It sacred to Jupiter, Zeus, Blodeuwedd and Odin. The acorn is a symbol of all. Never gather from an Oak which is a host for mistletoe, these trees should be reserved for holding your rituals beneath and left to their own devices. However, if you may gather the mistletoe, it is considered the most magickal of all mistletoe. PRODUCE - -bring some of the produce you have grown in your own garden to the altar as an offering to the deities. SUNFLOWER -- use this in decoration or any other manner which you would like to. It is wonderful to add sunflower petals to the ritual bath prior to rite, it brings increased happiness into your life and attracts joy and fills the spaces which re empty or sorrowful. It is an herb of Immortality and carries the virtues of adoration and worship. It is used to honor all Sun Gods, particularly Apollo and is said to be a patron herb for Leos and Virgos. AUTUMN/MABON Now our harvest is almost complete, all but the hardiest fruits and vegetables have been harvested and are being canned, dried or stored in another fashion for the coming winter. It is the night of Balance, when all has come to the focal point of the Center and now begins its long swing toward the winter months. This is the night when the Pagan SunGod now actually begins His journey to the Sumerlands and dies off during the coming months awaiting to be reborn at Yuletide. ACORNS -- are now strung into necklaces and used to adorn the male members of the coven. BENZOIN -- is used in the incense and makes us more aware of the balance of light and dark, male/female, positive/negative. FERNS -- this the appropriate night to gather them for later use. HONEYSUCKLE -- the dried ground wood and bark make wonderful incense at this time.

MARIGOLD -- decorate with the blossom which are normally quite colorful and full this time of the year. MILKWEED -- on this night there are Faeries and little folk about, this is the herb to help you see them. MYRRH -- is used in the incense and the ritual cup. In the manner of incense it brings about spiritual awareness and understanding of the currents of energy flowing throughout the ritual. It is important to use when trying to understand times of sorrow both personal and spiritual. PASSION FLOWER -- petal are placed in the incense. It calms angers and replaces it with an understanding of the condition. PRODUCE -- bring the best of your current produce as an offering to the Sun God to take and use on His journey and to dole out to those He meets along His way who have need of it. ROSE -- WHITE roses are appropriate at this time. They represent the pureness of the love of the Goddess for the God. SAGE -- is taken in the ritual cup. Carries the virtues of strength, mental health, wisdom and banishes negativity. SOLOMON'S SEAL -- is now used when casting the Circle. An herb of Protection and consecration. THISTLES -- are appropriate to represent your endurance throughout winter. HALLOWS-SAMHAIN- HALLOWEEN The last of the Pagan Harvest festivals. We now take in the last of the cold crops and take stock of that we have, ensuring there is enough to last us through the coming coldness of winter. We make the last of our preserves, dry the last of our herbs, can the last of the fruits and so on. It is the night when the Sun-God enters the Summerland bringing the souls who have departed that year with Him. It is the night we celebrate our Ancestors, Those Who Have Gone Before. The night when we ask Those to speak with us, to tell us of themselves, to show us our paths and for High Divination purposes. ACORNS -- at this time of year they are symbolic of the Life Within, the life yet to be fulfilled.

APPLES -- are used in the Feast and the bark from the tree is ground and used in the incense. They are considered a Religious herb and when eaten in this form on this night it is said to add a higher magickal dynamic to the ritual and it is then possible to bring out deep personal internal change. Bobbing for apples is very appropriate. ..and fun!...on this night. CORNSTALKS -- help to set the mood and add an imaginative element. DITTANY OF CRETE -- should be tossed into the fire to share with those who have passed. It is used also to seek the wisdom from those who are still between lives, teachers, guides, loved ones. It is used to invoke Persephone and Osiris both deities of the mystical Otherworld. FUMITORY -- is used in the incense. This herb is associated with the Otherworld and legend proclaims it sprang from the gases of the earth being born of the Earth's inner self and spirit rather than from seed. As an incense it purifies and is especially good to purify the Sacred Space and cleanse it or distractions and negative energies. MULLEIN -- should be gathered in advance an dried. The tops are soaked in oil or fat and then lit on this night, they make wonderful torches. Be sure to soak them for at least fifteen minutes before lighting, attach them to a heavy metal rod if possible. They may also be picked and dipped in Candle Wax....use your leftovers from your Candle Spells for this purpose. NIGHTSHADE (DEADLY, BELLADONNA) -- is gathered this night. It is the one night when the negative energies which be cast aside Their eyes from this plant and will not see you take it. Do not eat it! OAK -- adorns the altar and the male members of the Coven. PUMPKINS -- make those Jack-O-Lanterns! Place them all around your Circle and your altar. SAGE -- is used in the ritual cup. YULETIDE This is the wonderful celebration of the re-birth of the Sun God. The time when we spiritually and physically aid the Goddess is giving birth to her Consort. We decorate and burn our Yule Logs and hope that our dreams and desires for the future will come to fruition, we dance our Spiral Dance around our altars and concentrate on sending our energies to the Goddess as She goes through the process of labor and delivery. It is the day when all is born anew and begins, quietly, to grow and flourish again.

BLESSED THISTLE -- is taken by the priest in the ritual cup to invoke the newly born Sun God. CHAMOMILE -- symboliz es the Sun God and is cast into the Circle as well as used to actually cast the Circle. It is used in the incense and ritual cup. It is good to use in the Ritual Bath prior to the ceremony. EVERGREEN -- any type will do, they are hung everywhere at this time of year in the home and about the Circle. The needles make excellent incense. FRANKINCENSE -- is the best incense for this ritual. HOLLY -- is used along with evergreen to decorate the home and the Circle. It is a sacred herb of the Druids, in the manner of bringing it into the home one is said to also be bringing in the Little people thereby offering them shelter and safety from the harshness of winter. MISTLETOE -- is added to the incense and hung in the doorways to fill the home with extra love and kisses at this time of year. Each person attending the ritual should toss a mistletoe berry into the fire to represent the things personal to them that they desires to grow and increase in strength as the Sun God grows. PINE -- the Christmas tree is OURS people! Go ahead and put up a big one! Decorate it with popcorn, cranberries, pagan symbols, witchballs, lights, mirrors and whatever else you want. SAGE -- is used in the ritual cup. CANDLEMAS/IMBOLG This time is known by some as the "Feast of the Waxing Light" it is the time of year that we are beginning to notice the Sun Gods growth in that the days are becoming longer. This, like May Day/Beltane, is another pagan holiday which has survived into the current time, now it is celebrated as Ground Hog Day. ANGELICA -- is best in the ritual cup. In this manner is considered to bring one in contact with the inhabitants of Atlantis and to bring Atlantean energies into their lives, visions and understanding.

BASIL -- this is the traditional time of year for initiations and the initiate should have been taking daily tonics of basil for at least the last two weeks. It is given now to prepare the innerself for initiation to bring fortitude. BAY -- if the ritual is to be a solemn occasion then it is appropriate to chew one or two (no more than that!) Leaves and meditate upon the growing light and Sun God. BENZOIN -- is used in the incense. CELANDINE -- is used in the ritual cup and tossed into the fire. HEATHER -- is used to decorate the entire space. MYRRH -- is used in the ritual cup and/or incense.

magical protection
by Lady Emerald If you feel you've genuinely been the victim of a magical attack, the first thing to do is protect yourself from further mischief. Once you've done that, you need to get started on removal of the curse or hex. There are several methods of doing this. Some examples that may be used successfully include: Create a "magic mirror" spell which bounces the hex or curse back to its sender* Create a doll or poppet to take the damage in your place Perform a working that will remove negative influences from your life Use meditation, Reiki, chakra healing, or other energy work to lift the spell For general protection, most people use a simple shielding method. This is a psychic shell that one draws around themselves. You can do this either by casting a circle of protection and recharging it periodically, or you can charge an amulet or talisman with protective properties. This will be an effective way of protecting you in the majority of magical attacks. Property and vehicles can be protected as well. You can place a magical barrier or ward around your yard, keep a protective amulet or talisman in your car, or even set up a shield around your desk at work.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR MAGICAL NAME

Posted By Breeze
One way is to look up a Deity's or many Deities' name(s) and incorporate them into a name that you feel especially strong with. I strongly encourage you to do you homework on this style of selection! Words have power and many a name has more than one meaning or story behind it. Do not be surprised if you begin to take on the aspects and/or personality of the one (or more) name(s) that you have chosen. Also, get the deity's permission FIRST, before you use their name! This is a great method but like most things (especially in Magick, you MUST be responsible for what you do).

Another method is to use a ceremony or ritual (or even a dream) in which you choose animal or cultural names from history or memory. This one is great for past life/incarnation buffs. This method is also good for those with a strong association with a particular animal (or animals).

One fun way is to sit alone, or even with some friends, and think of names or attributes of yourself that you and your friends feel are very strong and predominate in your personality. Choose something that you can be proud of and something that will not embarrass you the next time your friend(s) call it out at a meeting or gathering. Really think about this one. Remember, what you pick becomes a part of you and what you will become!

Finally, you might want to try meditation, either guided or self-guided. This is a very personal way to find your name. Go and ask the Deities themselves! Envision yourself at a sacred space and ask for assistance from a guide and/or teacher. You will get it! Most methods of meditation will work, even methods of very deep relaxation. Have fun with this. Be respectful both to yourself, and the one(s) giving you help with this!

Whatever method you choose, remember there is no "right" or "wrong" name. Just go with what feels good to you.

Ten Top Tips for Avoiding the Flu

1. Wash your hands. (Rub briskly under hot running water for at least 30 seconds.) 2. Don't use antibacterial soaps. (They encourage the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.) 3. Drink lots of fluids. (Especially hot herbal antibacterial teas such as sage, thyme, rosemary.) 4. Start your day with a cup of cool yogurt or hot miso soup. (Both encourage strong immunity.) 5. Make nourishing soups with the immune-enhancing roots astragalus and eleutherococcus.* 6. Spray your nasal passages with a saline solution or a xylitol rinse. (Kills viral particles.) 7. Be wary of diets that radically alter what you eat. (They tend to depress the immune system.) 8. Eat well-cooked leafy greens like kale, collards, and mustard greens. (Strengthens immunity.) 9. Add lots of arugula and watercress to your salad. (They're antiviral.) 10. Eat garlic. (Even powdered, even cooked.) Eat ginger. (Or drink it.)

If you do get the flu, elder berry (Sambucus nigra) tincture or syrup may shorten its stay. Green blessings Susun S. Weed

10 Things To Do to Survive 2012 Activist Post

No one is predicting 2012 to be an uplifting year, economically. All major financial analysts predict stagnation at best, while others warn of likely doom and gloom as the dollar continues to become less desirable around the world. In 2010, China and Russia agreed to stop trading together in dollars and Japan agreed to do the same with China just last week. Moves like that coming from these major economic players only can spell doom for those who rely on the strength of the dollar. With commodities like food and oil still trading in weakening dollars, it puts further pressure on the soaring prices of these essentials. All signs seem to indicate that the cost of living in dollar-based economies will likely rise dramatically in 2012 as well. Additionally, just as Western populations find themselves broke and without jobs, their governments are also on the brink of bankruptcy and are reducing domestic spending, while continuing to print endless gobs of money for fraudulent banks and endless wars. The notion of reversing this trend is not promising. Since 2012 will likely be another tumultuous year for at least over half the American population who are already sliding on the razors edge of poverty, its important to prepare accordingly.

Here are 10 things to do in 2012 that will help you survive economic fluctuations and even full-blown collapse:

1. Learn New Skills: The best insurance you can take out for an economic downturn is learning new skills. Skills to produce something beautiful or beneficial to humans is the only true form of wealth that no one can take from you. Examples of skills to survive economic collapse can be organic gardening, food storage, food preparation, animal husbandry, construction, sewing, candle and soap making, first aid and natural medicine, hunting and fishing, alternative energy, mechanics, and anything else that fills basic human necessity. Many other skills are viable as well should society not deteriorate completely such as writing, communicating, organizing, software coding, etc. Note: These skills are beneficial to have regardless of economic conditions.

2. Improve Your Health: Yes, this is everyone's cliche New Year's resolution. But in times of great uncertainty, especially economically, taking care of your health is ultra important. When each week may be make-or-break financially, very few can afford to lose a week or more of productivity because of illness. Additionally, great stress is likely facing everyone in 2012. Thus, full spectrum health of body, mind and spirit will be vital to survive and thrive in tumultuous times.

3. Store Backup Food: The overall global food price index increased by 33% from January 2010 to January 2011. Did your income rise by that much in 2011? Did the value of your investments increase by that much in 2011? If not, storing extra food is far more practical than maintaining a savings or investment account. And in terms of withstanding a possible collapse of the dollar or economy in general, you'll be in much better shape than if your resources are in a banking institution.

4. Create a How-To Library: There is no way to learn all of the things that may be useful in times of severe economic distress. Many of us rely on the Internet as an immediately accessible library of how-to information. However, if something were to happen to Internet access in 2012, which is clearly under threat of censorship and control, it's important to build your own personal library of useful how-to knowledge; books, ebooks, videos etc. Get an external hard drive and start downloading books and videos that may prove priceless in times of need.

5. Start a Side Business: Waiting for the government or anyone to "create" jobs is futile and foolish. The West has clearly entered an age of prolonged economic downturn where manufacturing jobs are unlikely to return with any significance. It's time to focus on creating something for yourself, whether you're currently employed or not. Learn to forage for deals and small earnings. Learn to create. Start a small side business and build the foundation for an additional stream of income with something you're passionate about. Start a blog, write a book, teach or take a class -- anything that you can sink your teeth into.

6. Gather Trade-able Goods: If things go from bad to worse, besides food, there are many things that will be valuable to have stored up. First consider your personal needs and overbuy those items. Things like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, wet wipes, baking soda (countless uses), Q-tips, first aid products, alcohol, and medicine. There are also several survival goods that you should backstock like; water filters, fuel, lighters, lighter fluid, seeds, weapons, common ammunition, batteries, and hand tools. These are regularly used in daily life and won't ever go to waste, but they also have great trade value should times get tough. All of these items can be picked up very inexpensively if you keep your eye on deals and buy in bulk.

7. Build Community Alliances: Everyone needs a supporting tribe when times get tough. Inform your family and friends of your plans to prep for the worst and the new business ventures you're engaged in. Encourage them to get involved with you in any capacity that makes sense. Seek others in your community already doing these things and collaborate with them. Support local businesses and local food cooperatives. Go to your town hall or city council meetings and suggest community activities that increase self-sufficiency of the area to cushion any disruption.

8. Alternative Energy: Having any source of alternative energy is just plain smart for any circumstance. A backup generator, whether solar-powered or gas, is imperative for those who live in cold climates (along with a wood stove or fireplace) prone to electric outages in the winter. But imagine if the lights go out for an extended period of time. Solar hot water, a solar-powered chest freezer, a solar oven and a small generator will provide a high level of self-reliance for energy with minimal investment.

9. Water Purification: Clean water is so vital to your health and survival that you should acquire several ways to purify water. First, before disaster strikes, test your water now. You may be surprised to discover that disaster or not, your water may already be contaminated with countless toxins including sanctioned additives like fluoride. There are several affordable options for turning unhealthy water into crisp fresh water from portable hand-pumped units, table-top setups, faucet attachments, to pills and bleach drops. It's recommended to have more than one option, so research and find the best that you can afford that suits your needs.

10. Love & Appreciate: One of the most important intangible things you can do to survive 2012 is to love and appreciate more. Make it a daily action item: express love to your friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers. What you put out into the world is what you'll get in return. Appreciate what you do have every day. Don't be disappointed because others may have more, because there are always others with far less. Your genuine appreciation for the little things will attract the bigger things you need and desire.

The Indigo to Crystal Transitional Crisis by Celia Fenn

Tenerelli

I have been asked by Archangel Michael to write this article in order to help the many people who undergo the experience of a rapid shift into multi-dimensional awareness, or, the shift from the Indigo state to the Crystal state of consciousness. There are people who make the transition in a relatively gentle way, but there are many who experience a crisis when this happens. These are usually the people who have chosen to open up to the higher dimensions. This choice is not made logically by the rational mind, but is rather a soul choice made in response to the available transitional energies of the Earth herself. So, sometimes a person is thrust into psychological, emotional and bodily changes for which they can find no logical explanation. This can cause a crisis. My experience has been that orthodox doctors and psychologists are of very little help as they have no idea of what the person is experiencing. When tests come back negative, the person is often considered to be hysterical or ungrounded or even schizophrenic. This transition often happens to people who have been on spiritual paths and are better equipped to handle the shifts. But, my experience is also that Indigo Children, no matter what their state of spiritual awareness, are particularly vulnerable to the spontaneous experience of transiton or breakthough to the awareness of higher dimensions. I must also add that the use of any kinds of drugs, fairly common among Indigo adolescents, quite often precipitates this transitonal crisis before the person is really ready to deal with the effects.

Below are a list of the symptoms experienced in the process of crisis or breakthrough: Sudden extreme sensitivity to people and environments. A person who has previously been sociable and active suddenly finds they can't bear to be in shopping malls or in crowded environments such as restaurants. An increase in psychic ability and awareness. This most often manifests in the ability to almost "hear" the inner thoughts and feelings of others. This can be disconcerting if the person imagines that everyone else can also read their thoughts and feelings. Also an extreme sensitivity to negative energy in certain environments or people, including the inability to tolerate certain people who had previously been close.

This increased sensitivity can lead to panic attacks or anxiety attacks. These can occur at any time, even when the person wakes up at night. Often there is no valid reason for the attack, although the person will often seek to find a reason. The person might also find themselves "zoning out" for long periods of time, just wanting to sit and do nothing. This can be irritating to someone who has previously been very energetic and active. This is just the consciousness adjusting to spending more time in the higher dimensions and less time in the 3rd and 4th dimensions. Related to this is the need to rest and sleep for far longer than previously, and a generalslowing down. Obssessive anxieties about humans being destroyed (by pollution, lack of resources, aliens, technology etc). This is because multi-dimensional consciousness can access all levels of the group mind, including that part which holds the fears and anxieties about the survival of the species. Since the person is often concerned about their own survival, they tend to resonate with this part of the group mind or morphogenetic field. An obssessive need to understand what is happening, leading to the mind becoming overactive and the person fearing they are losing it or suffering from "burn-out". Also a fear of going mad and being unable to cope with everyday life in the future. Again, psychologists and doctors seem able to offer very little help. Depression for no reason, or related to the crisis state. This is often just the consciousness clearing out old layers of energy that need to be released. It is not necessary to "process" or relive the experience, just allow the body to release the energy. Have patience with the process and know that it will pass. Disrupted sleep patterns, often waking up to 3 times a night, or just at about 3am. Again this is just the consciousness adapting to new cycles of activity. Higher consciousness is often more active at night since the lower dimensions are quiet at this time. Feeling strange electrical energy waves through the body. The Crystal body is incredibly sensitive, and feels solar and lunar waves, cosmic waves, and energies from the galactic centre. Often these energies are assisting in the process of "rewiring" the body to carry higher energies. Speaking from experience, I know how uncomfortable this can be. But the body eventually acclimates to dealing with these energy waves. You will probably find them to be more intense around Full Moon. The best way I have found of dealing with this phenomenon is to go outside and stand barefoot on the ground and imagine the energy running through your body and into the earth.

A whole range of physical sensations and experiences, usually related to detoxification. The Crystal body holds no toxins, but allows everything to pass through it. In fact the eventual trick to being Crystal is just to allow everything to pass through and hold onto nothing. The ultimate state of detachment. But at this stage the body needs to release years of "toxic" waste, whether physical, emotional or mental The release is always through the physical body, which presents symptoms such as intense fatigue, muscle and joint pains especially in the hips and knees, headaches, especially at the base of the skull, and neck and shoulder pains. Dizziness and "spaciness". This is because you are in "higher" states of consciousness. You need to get used to being at these levels and staying grounded at the same time. These sensations tend to increase with solar flares and full moons as well. Increased appetite and putting on weight. This is because the body needs huge amounts of energy to power this process. The ability to see beyond the veils. That is, to become aware of spirits, devas,E.Ts and angels as a reality and to communicate with these. This can be very frightening if the person is not accustomed to this kind of other dimensional awareness.

Coping Skills for the Transition

The best advice I can give is to be accepting of the process and do not resist. My own transition has been going on for nearly 18 months. I found that the key was acceptance. I kept hoping that I was going to wake up one day and feel "normal" again. It was only when I accepted that I would never again feel "normal" as I knew it, that I was better able to feel more comfortable in my new space and to cope better. Then you can begin to explore the adventure or the positive side of this new state.

Below are some tips for dealing with the transitional crisis:

Be at peace with what is happening to your being. You are becoming a Crystal being. Another term for this is a "Christed being", which refers to a mutli-dimensional being with full access to 9 dimensions, and maybe even 13. My experience at this point is that some people only open to 5D, others go through to 6D. If you make it through to 6D then you will probably achieve full 9D awareness in this lifetime, if not in the very near future. What a privilege and a blessing!!

Be kind to yourself and nurture yourself. Remember, as a Crystal being you carry an equal balance of the "mother" energy and the "father" energy. The mother says, nurture yourself as you would a new-born baby, for in fact that is what you are. You will need time to grow in strength and learn the skills of your new environment. Trust is very important here. I made the transition as a single selfsupporting person in my own business with very little resources. I was terrified that my physical state would prevent me from earning enough to survive. But I was held though the process, and still have my home and I have always had enough although there have been some close calls. Don't take drugs of any kind if you can help help it. Obviously if you are on medication for your health then you will need to continue. But do not take recreational drugs of any kind, these will aggravate the process and you could get lost "out there" in the higher dimensions. Also try to cope without anti-depressants or tranqulizers, although again if you are on these you will need medical advice and should not just stop them. The best path to take is to use homeopathic and naturopathic medicine, and I have found that Flower Essences are very helpful as well. Avoid crowds and crowded places. I have perfected the art of the weekly one hour shopping "blitz" in order to care for my needs while not spending too long in tiring and toxic environments. Gradually you will be able to tolerate more and more exposure to these environments. The key here, of course, is to hold your own peace and harmony so strongly that instead of you being affected by the environment, you in fact affect the environment in positive ways. The Crystal person always holds and carries positive energy, but you will learn to use it in incredibly powerful ways once you have gained your balance and are able to move among people again with ease. Stay grounded and centred. This can be very challenging for those who are acclimating to higher dimensional awareness. You will often feel dizzy and spaced. But try to pay full attention to the physical and grounded aspects of life. The key here is to spend time on exercise, walking, food and artistic occupations. Don't spend hours in front of the TV or lost in computer games. These will only serve to increase the ungroundedness. Spend as much time as you can in Nature. You will find spending time in fresh air and sunlight will assist to strenghten the new bodies. Also the devas are there to support your processes. Eat simply and eat as much fresh vegetables and fruit as possible. I have been told by guidance that brown rice and vegetables are the best kind of food for this new body. However, indulge your cravings - mine have ranged from calamari to chocolate cake. This is not the time to diet. Your body needs huge amounts of nourishment to fuel the processes you are passing though. You may even put on weight, but you will need to accept that this is part of the transition. Finally - Celebrate your transition. You are becoming a Galactic human, the next step in human evolution! You are entering into your birthright. WELCOME HOME, HUMAN ANGEL.

An Introduction to Spiritualism
Posted by Rev

Carol Ingle

An Introduction to Spiritualism Some people describe themselves as being spiritual rather than religious, and it might be tempting to presume that Spiritualism has to do with personal spirituality. In fact, Spiritualism designates a specific school of religious thought in which contact with noncorporeal spirits via mediums is a primary means of gaining further understanding. The National Spiritualist Association of Churches defines the movement as the following: Spiritualism is the Science, Philosophy and Religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication, by means of mediumship, with those who live in the Spirit World. (1919) "Spiritualism Is a Science" because it investigates, analyzes and classifies facts and manifestations demonstrated from the spirit side of life. "Spiritualism Is a Philosophy" because it studies the Laws of Nature both on the seen and unseen sides of life and bases its conclusions upon present observed facts. It accepts statements of observed facts of past ages and conclusions drawn therefrom, when sustained by reason and by results of observed facts of the present day. "Spiritualism Is a Religion" because it strives to understand and to comply with the Physical, Mental and Spiritual Laws of Nature, which are the laws of God. Origins Spiritualism originated in the 19th century, when belief in seances and mediums became common throughout the Western world. But Spiritualism involves much more than a simple belief in ghosts. It involves a wider worldview involving both the physical and spiritual worlds and how they are interconnected. A large number of mediums and believers of ghosts do not consider themselves Spiritualists. Basic Beliefs There are differences between different Spiritualist groups. However, there are several commonly held beliefs.

1. The existence of an infinite intelligence, a supreme but generally impersonal power that expresses itself through the natural world (both physical and spiritual) and everything within it. As such, all things and all people are part of this manifestation of God. 2. True religion is about understanding how this intelligence manifests itself and living in accordance with it. 3. Life does not end at death. The soul can experience a variety of existences, of which life on earth is only one. Afterward, the soul can continue to learn and evolve just as it did on earth, passing through multiple spiritual realms. 4. Communication with these non-corporeal souls is not only possible but also important in our own growing understanding of the world and ourselves. 5. There is no Heaven or Hell. There is always the opportunity for improvement and redemption, both in this life and in life after physical death. 6. Each person is responsible for his own actions and his own circumstances. Relationship with Christianity Most 19th century mediums were also Christians. As such, Christianity influences some branches of Spiritualism more than others, particularly on moral issues. Overall, however, Spiritualism is its own separate faith. Fortune-Telling The rise of seances happened in a time of increased interest in various forms of divination, and some mediums did claim that the spirits could predict the future. This is not the claim of Spiritualists, although they do accept that the spirits can provide guidance about likely future events because they are able to understand the bigger picture. Morality of Spirits Spirits are generally considered to be of various stages of enlightenment, since they have experienced things in the Spirit realm that we have not. However, there are disagreeable and ignorant spirits, just as there are disagreeable or ignorant people. This is no more a permanent conditions among spirits than it is among the living.

Relaxation Steps
Posted by Rev Davey Dunbar
Preparation Preparation for meditation is particularly important, as it is not at all easy to rush from your everyday life straight into a receptive mode. It takes time to 'switch off', and the following process is well worth observing.

1.Allocate a favorite place, where it is quiet, and away from possible interruption. It is preferable to use the same place each time. 2.Bright light can be distracting, so during the day it may be advisable to draw the curtains. At night, a room is most calming when dimly lit. 3.Prepare the room carefully. You may choose to light a candle, burn some incense, and put on some quiet and restful background music. However, none of these things are essential. 4.Sit yourself in a comfortable chair, with your back straight, and your arms and shoulders relaxed. Place your hands where you feel they are most comfortable. If you choose not to sit in the lotus position, then both feet should be firmly on the floor. If you choose to lie down during meditation, there is a danger of you going to sleep, but many people find this position also very successful. Tense and Relax 1.Take a few deep breaths. It is important that you don't over breathe. Just a few healthy intakes and release of breath to start the relaxation process 2.Become aware of your body. Concentrate on the different areas, and note where there are points of restriction. If necessary shift a little to find a better position. Ensure that your back remains straight, but you are sitting comfortably without feeling uneasy. 3.Tense and relax. Beginning with your feet, gradually move up each section of the body step by step - tensing and relaxing as you go. Be particularly aware of your thighs, hands, arms, shoulders, and face muscles. Clenching your fists, hunching your shoulders, and tight facial grins are particularly useful before relaxing.

4.Ensure relaxation is complete. Quickly go over the whole body again, to confirm that all parts of you are fully relaxed, and if necessary re-address any areas of difficulty. The whole process of relaxation should not take a great deal of time, but it is an important part of preparation for a beneficial session. Having relaxed the body, the following points are useful for relaxing the mind, and moving your thoughts inwards before you begin. Getting into a receptive mode 1Close your eyes and imagine yourself wrapped in a bubble of light. All is warm and comforting. Become aware of the ebb and flow of your breathing. 2.Concentrate on the most distant noise you can hear. It may be a car hooting its horn in a road across the way, or an aeroplane flying overhead. Allow yourself to hear these sounds, recognise them, and let them go. 3.Now, move in closer and note the sounds just outside your house, or the building where you are meditating. It could be children playing in the garden, or your neighbours talking in the street. Maybe a dog barking. Allow yourself to hear them, recognise, and let go. 4.Concentrate now on the sounds directly outside your room. It could be a radio programme if someone else is in the area, or perhaps a bath running. Recognise all these things, and let them go. 5.Now, pull your attention to inside the room you are in. What sounds do you hear now? It could be the central heating, or a clock ticking. The sound of soft music playing. 6.The final step is to move inside yourself. Can you hear your heart beating, your breathing, or the slight hissing sound in your ears? Acknowledge all these and let them go. Once you have done all this, you are now ready to move into deep meditation - to hear the voice of your inner self, without distraction from the outer sounds. Descriptions of different forms of meditation are described on the following pages. Although these techniques are commonly used for Passive Mediation. They can also be used in preparation for Active Meditation, in order to put you in a completely relaxed state before you begin. However, if you intend to meditate as you are walking, you may find it convenient to adapt the process a little, incase you find yourself wobbling along on jelly legs! Always bring yourself slowly out of a meditation. Just as it is not productive to rush in without preparation, it is equally not productive to rush out without sufficient time to come back into the everyday world.

"A Fairy Gathering" by George Cruikshank

Fairies in Legend, Lore, and Literature (Continued)

by Terri Windling

Marjabella La Fey

In visual art, following in the footsteps of the 18th century painters Henry Fuseli and William Blake, artists such as Joseph Nol Paton, John Anster Fitzgerald, Richard Dadd, Richard Doyle, Daniel Maclise, Thomas Heatherly, Eleanor FortesqueBrickdale, and many, many others created an entire genre of Victorian Fairy Art a genre found in prestigious galleries and at the Royal Academy exhibitions not marginalized, as fantasy art tends to be today. These were paintings for adults, not children. John Anster Fitzgerald's fairy imagery, for instance, was often dark and hallucinatory, full of references to opium pipes and opium medicines. Richard Dadd's obsessively detailed fairy paintings were created in a mental hospital where Dadd was interred after he lost his reason and killed his father. Many fairy paintings were distinctly salacious, such as Sir Joseph Nol Paton's huge canvases of luscious fairy maidens in various states of undress. Fairies enabled Victorian painters to explore the subject of sexuality during the very years when that subject was most repressed in polite society. Paintings of the nude were deemed acceptable so long as those nudes sported fairy wings.

The passion for fairies among Victorian adults must also be viewed in light of the rapid changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, as Britain moved from the rhythms of its rural past toward the mechanized future. With factories and suburban blight transforming huge tracts of English countryside, fairy paintings and stories were rich in nostalgia for a vanishing way of life. In particular, the art of the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood depicting scenes from Romance, legend and myth promoted a dreamy medievalism and the aesthetics of fine craftsmanship to counter what they saw as a soul less new world created by modern forms of mass production. ("For every locomotive they build," vowed artist Edward BurneJones, "I shall paint another angel.") The Arts & Crafts movement, which grew out of PreRaphaelitism, embraced folklore and fairies to such a degree that by the end of the 19th century fairies could be found in middle class homes in every form of decorative arts: wallpaper, draperies, ceramics, stained glass, metalwork, etc. Advances in printing methods allowed the production of lavishly illustrated fairytale books, ostensibly aimed at children but with production values calculated to please adults (and the growing breed of book collectors). Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, the Robinson brothers, Jessie M. King, and numerous others produced wonderful fairy pictures for these volumes. Jessie M. King, like William Blake before her, was an artist who passionately believed in the fairies. Her lovely illustrations were based, she said, on visions seen with her "third eye." In the pretelevision, precinema world of the Victorians, theater, ballet, and opera had greater importance as forms of popular entertainment than they enjoy today as well as a greater influence on the visual and literary arts. In the 1830s, the new Romantic ballet (as opposed to formal, classical ballet)

"The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke" by Richard Dadd

thrilled large audiences in London with productions that dramatized tales of love between mortals and fairy spirits. Aided by innovations in "point work" (dancing on the points of one's toes), and improvements in theater gaslighting techniques, sumptuous fairylands were created in hit productions such as La Sylphide, the tragic story of a mortal man in love with an elfin maid. In theater, fairy plays were staged with stunningly elaborate special effects, each new production striving to be even more spectacular than the last. Fairy music was another popular phenomenon, much of it imported from Germany such as Weber's fairy opera Oberon, Hoffman's Ondine (based on Fouqu's Undine), Wagner's Die Feen (The Fairies), and Mendelssohn's overture for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Fairy music for the harp was composed and performed by charismatic musicians as popular then as pop stars are now, and young women swooned and followed their favorite harpists from concert to concert. Magical music and dance reached its height in the works of Tchaikovsky, the brilliant Russian composer who took London indeed, all of Europe by storm. The popularity of his fairytale ballets (Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker) fuelled the Victorian public's love of all things magical and fey. In literature as in art, theater, and ballet the fairies made their presence known, turning up in numerous books written and published during the Victorian era. Some of these works were for adult readers such as Anne Thackaray Ritchie's Fairy Tales for Grownups, the Arthurian poems of Lord Tennyson and William Morris,

and (at the turn of the century) the remarkable fairy poetry of "Celtic Twilight" writers such as William Sharp (writing as Fiona McCleod) and William Butler Yeats. But one of the major shifts we see in fairy literature from the 19th century onward is that more and more of it was published in books intended for small children. There were two major reasons why this shift occurred, despite the fact that adult fascination with fantasy and fairies had rarely been so high. First, the Victorians romanticized the very idea of "childhood" to a degree never seen before; earlier, childhood had not been viewed as something quite so separate from adult life. Children, according to this earlier view, came into the world in sin and had to be strictly civilized into Godfearing members of society.

"Marie Taglioni in Sylphide" by Alfred Edward Chalon

By Victorian times, this belief was changing to one in which children were inherently innocent, rather than inherently sinful and childhood became a special Golden Age, a time of fanciful play and exploration before the burdens of adulthood were assumed. Mothers were encouraged to have a more doting attitude toward their little ones (following the example of Queen Victoria herself), and this, combined with the rising wealth of the Victorian middle class, led to an explosion in the market for children's books.

Children's fiction in the previous century had been diabolically dreary consisting primarily of pious, tedious books of moral instruction. But in the 19th century, new European fairy tale collections by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen were proving enormously popular with English children. Publishers and writers took note of this and soon began producing volumes of magical tales set in the British Isles including tales inspired by English fairy lore, toned down and desexed for younger readers.

"Dream of Delight" by Eleanor Vere Boyle

A lot of these fairytale volumes, marred by these heavyhanded alterations, make abysmal reading today but some retained enough of the magic of their source material to have stood the test of time, such as the famous series edited by Andrew Lang: The Blue Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, The Red Fairy Book, etc. In addition to retelling traditional tales, Victorian writers created original fairy stories for children, using the tropes of folklore in charming and innovative ways. These tales include John Ruskin's The King of the Golden River, Charlotte Yonge's The History of Tom Thumb, Christina Rossetti's extraordinary Goblin Market, Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies, Jean Ingelow's Mopsa the Fairy, George Macdonald's The Princess and the Goblin, Rudyard Kipling's Puck of Pook's Hill, and J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan in Kensington Garden, to name just a few.

In his excellent book Victorian Fairy Tales, folklorist Jack Zipes divides the magical children's fiction published from 1860 onward into two basic types: conventional stories, and stories written in a utopian mode. Although there were some good fantasy tales of the conventional type, such as the fairy stories of Jean Ingelow and the ghost stories of Mary Louisa Molesworth, many others were forgettable confections full of twinkly fairies with butterfly wings and good little boys and girls who caused no disturbance to the status quo. Utopian fantasies, Zipes notes, demonstrated "a profound belief in the power of the imagination as a potent force" to change English society, and these books were written by some of the very finest authors of the day. George Macdonald, Lewis Carroll, Oscar Wilde, Lawrence Housman, Ford Maddox Ford, Edith Nesbit (in her later works), and many other writers created magical tales that were archly critical of Victorian life, promoting the possibility of a better society. The prevalence of utopian fantasy is explained by looking at the context of the culture which produced it a society in the grip of great upheaval due to rapid industrialization. Fairies flittered across London stages and nested in bucolic scenes on gallery walls, but outside on the city streets it was a long, long way from Never Land, crowded as they were with beggars, cripples, prostitutes (many of them children), and with homeless, desperate men and women displaced by the new economy.

"Fairy Barque" by John Anster Fitzgerald

While the upper classes charmed themselves with fairy books and dancing nymphs, and clapped to bring Tinkerbell back to life, in the lower classes, both urban and rural, fairies remained a different matter altogether. Here, the delicate winged maidens depicted by painters and ballet dancers were superceded by the fearsome creatures of the stillliving oral tradition. Throughout the 19th century, the British newspapers reported cases of fairy sightings, curses, and abductions. The most famous of these incidents occurred as late as 1895, and riveted newspaper readers all across the British Isles. This was the murder of Bridget Cleary, a spirited young woman in Ireland who was killed by her husband, family, and neighbors because they thought she was a fairy changeling. Bridget Cleary had fallen gravely ill, and the family had consulted a "fairy doctor." He claimed that Bridget had been abducted and taken under a fairy hill, and that the sickly creature in her bed was a fairy changeling in disguise. The doctor devised several ordeals designed to make the changeling reveal itself ordeals that soon grew so extreme that poor Bridget died. Convinced it was a fairy he had killed, Bridget's husband then went to the fairy fort to wait for his "real" wife to ride out seated on a milk white horse. Bridget's disappearance was soon noted, the body found, the horrible crime brought to light, and Michael and other family members and neighbors found themselves prosecuted for murder. Although this was the most flamboyant case of changelingmurder in the Victorian press, sadly it was not the only account of brutal mistreatment of those deemed to be fairies. Usually the poor victims were children, born with physical deformities or struck by sudden wasting illnesses. It wasn't until the 20th century that reports of fairy abductions began to dwindle when reports of abductions by aliens began to take their place. The last major fairy encounter reported widely by the British press took place in the tranquil countryside of Yorkshire in 1917 when Elsie Wright, sixteen years old, and Frances Griffith, her tenyearold cousin, contrived to take photographs of fairies at play in their Cottingley garden. Elsie's mother had the photographs sent to Edward Gardner, head of the Theosophical Society, who then passed them on to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of Sherlock Holmes). Although the photographs are rather unconvincing by today's standards, professionals at the time could find no evidence of photographic doctoring. The pictures, championed by Conan Doyle, caused an absolute sensation, and brought the fairy craze well into the 20th century. Only when Elsie and Frances were old ladies in the 1980s did they admit that the Cottingley fairies were actually paper cutouts held in place by hatpins. Even so, their deathbed statements on the subject were more ambiguous, implying that the fairies, if not the photographs, had been real after all. In her fascinating book Strange and Secret Peoples: Fairies and Victorian Consciousness, Carol G. Silver points out that the Cottingley incident, despite briefly reviving interest in the fairies, was actually one of the factors that ended the "Golden Age" of fairy art and literature.

"Cottingley Fairy Photograph"

"Ironically," she says, "the photographs, the ostensible proof of the actual existence of the fairies, deprived the elfin people of the grandeur and their stature . . . The theories that Gardner formulated to explain the fairies' nature and function reduced them to the intelligence level of household pets and the size of insects." In addition to this, the massive popularity that the fairies had enjoyed throughout the 19th century insured that they'd be branded oldfashioned by the generations that immediately followed. Those who'd survived the hard trials of World War I had little interest in the faux medievalism and fairies of their grandparents' day. And yet, it is interesting to note that one of the most popular art prints of the war era depicted a simple country boy playing a pipe, surrounded by fairies. This was "The Piper of Dreams," a painting by the AngloItalian artist Estella Canziani an image as ubiquitous in England then as Monet's water lilies are now. Canziani's gentle, forgotten fairy picture once rivaled William Holman Hunt's "The Light of the World" in popularity, and was said to be a favorite of English soldiers in the trenches of World War I.

when you find a portal

Posted by Kelly
before you get all froggy and go off closing portals be sure all entities and astral beings are on the otherside of the gateway.(trapping a spirit can cause big trouble so be sure there where they need to be first)The amount of trouble a spirit can cause depends on how much energy it possesses and how much coherant conciousness it has, A fully intergrated spirit can get nasty when there rout home is closed off so before you close a portal be sure all unwanted energies are sent back and removed from the home.

you should now clean the house or space with intent of ridding these unwanted nasties so can wash the area with an infusion of mugwort and rosemary i also have used peppermint and sage leafe as a wash or frankinsence or a sage stick cedar will work as well,

as the smoke gets thicker envision portal being closed off permanetly. Raise you hand to your forehead and press your thumbs and forefingers together so they make an upright triangle,(this is called the triangle of creation)by placing it against this stronge chakra of pshycic energy, you can project protective energy exactly where you want it to go.Visualise your energy collecting in your third eye after you have gatherd as much as you can, mentally send it blazing forth in a fiery pentagram that sears shut the portal forever then remains on gaurd to prevent it from being opened again. Remember to feed your ward some fresh energy once a month to keep it working with its best and most strength.
