January 14th & 15th

From

Father Doug

Every January we hear talk of New Years Resolutions. The idea of taking something in your life and working to improve it is noble activity, but without follow-through and commitment ideas quickly evaporate. Sometimes we try to tackle things unrealistically or take on more than we can handle. Other times we simply procrastinate; this years resolution that is over our head or waits until tomorrow has a good chance of becoming next years resolution. Resolutions are for now. The best resolution is one that is reasonable and compatible with our nature and our ability. Persistence in small steps is an effective way to accomplish long term goals. Though not as dramatic as the great immediate accomplishment, most success involves an outcome from patient persistence. Since our resolutions seem to reflect a desire for something good why not simply resolve to seek what is good? Rather than confining such a resolution to a calendar year, why not do it one day at a time? The examination of conscience is a prayerful tool to help us pursue what is good. If we look back at our day with confidence in God, we can grow in virtue as we ask God to help us with our weaknesses. We need to avoid the denial to which we are prone when we confront difficulty; we need to open ourselves honestly to our God, to name our issues honestly and directly. Such candor makes it easier for God to enter our lives when we seek divine assistance sometimes the hardest part is simply letting God in. God has given us our strengths and our weaknesses as tools to grow in our relationship with our almighty Father who loves and wants us all; in faithful examination of conscience, we grow in humility as we learn of our God-given gifts and our need for God to help us with our struggles. God became one of us to teach us how to seek what is good and sent the Holy Spirit to help us follow Jesus on our lifes pilgrimage to our Fathers kingdom. It is a process of daily resolution with ups and downs, but for those who persevere, the prize will be unimaginable fulfillment. Our weekly worship reinforces this pursuit; here we share our lives as equals seeking the source of all that is good. We join our lives to the sacrifice and love of Christ so that we may one day be in eternal communion with God and each other. Sometimes we may hear something in the readings, prayers, or homily that resonates with our own life and gain insight into those things we are praying about when we examine out conscience.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of New Orleanspurple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die. Centuries ago, todays feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christs identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christs coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmas lights, and gather at the crche for a favorite carol and a prayer. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
